<\/a>John wrote, We know <\/em>(\u039f\u1f34\u03b4\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>) that everyone fathered<\/em> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) by God does not sin<\/em> (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), but God protects<\/em> (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) the one<\/a> he has fathered<\/em> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>), and the evil one cannot touch<\/em> (\u1f05\u03c0\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f05\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9<\/a>) him<\/em>.1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is one of the most frightening verses in the Bible to me (taken out of context).<\/p>\n

If I am born of God, then I do not sin.\u00a0 I sin.\u00a0 Therefore I am not born of God.<\/p>\n

This is a perfectly<\/a> valid argument called modus tollens<\/a><\/em>, denying the consequent.\u00a0 On the other hand, If we say we have not sinned<\/em> (\u1f21\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ae\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), we make<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) him a liar and his word<\/em> (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)2<\/sup><\/a> is not in us<\/em>.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Some context will help me understand my position between this rock and hard place and disentangle the fear of my religious mind<\/em> from the Gospel (1 John 1:5-8 NET).<\/p>\n

Now this is the gospel message<\/a> we have heard from him and announce to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0If we say we have (\u1f14\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>fellowship (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)\u00a0<\/em>with him and yet keep on walking in the darkness, we are lying and not practicing (\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> the truth (\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>). <\/em>\u00a0But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have (\u1f14\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> fellowship (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> with one another and the blood of Jesus<\/a> his Son cleanses (\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>us from all sin (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/em>,\u00a0a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0<\/em>If we say we do not bear (\u1f14\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> the guilt of sin (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>,\u00a0another form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth (\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1)<\/em> is not in us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though the word translated gospel message<\/em><\/a> above is \u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a> rather than \u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, I don\u2019t think the NET translators have made a mistake.\u00a0 This is truly more information about the Gospel, particularly as the Gospel relates to truth, lying and deception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

With my fear overcome I see one aspect of God\u2019s protection (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) and one potential meaning for everyone fathered<\/em> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) by God does not sin<\/em> (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>).4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Sins that God forgives are also forgotten by God.\u00a0 But is there more<\/a> to his \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9 than that?\u00a0 (Frankly, I would rather not sin<\/a> in the first place.)<\/p>\n
