{"id":2706,"date":"2013-09-16T04:48:05","date_gmt":"2013-09-15T22:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=2706"},"modified":"2026-06-16T14:54:56","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T19:54:56","slug":"saving-demons-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=2706","title":{"rendered":"Saving Demons, Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While studying the different <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/06\/21\/romans-part-45\/\">gifts of the Spirit<\/a> I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/08\/25\/romans-part-46\/\">came across<\/a> the following (2 Corinthians 3:7-9 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But if the ministry <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diak.html#diakonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em>that produced death \u2013 carved in letters <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/05\/31\/the-book-of-life-part-3\/#sdfootnote38sym\">on<\/a> stone tablets \u2013 came with glory, so that the Israelites could not keep their eyes fixed on the face of Moses because of the glory of his face (a glory which was made ineffective) <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, how much more glorious will the ministry <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diak.html#diakonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> of the Spirit be?\u00a0 For if there was glory in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn30\">the<\/a> ministry <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diak.html#diakonia6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diak.html#diakonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> that produced condemnation, how much more does the ministry <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diak.html#diakonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> that produces righteousness excel <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn31\">in<\/a> glory! <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_Table12\">Table<\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can\u2019t help but ask, what if the glory of the <i>ministry<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diak.html#diakonia6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/diak.html#diakonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <i>that produces righteousness<\/i> is <i>made ineffective<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargoumenhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) by the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/26\/romans-part-37\/\">religious mind<\/a>?\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/2+Corinthians+3:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">note 14<\/a> on <i>made ineffective<\/i> in the NET reads: \u201cOr \u2018which was transitory.\u2019 Traditionally this phrase is translated as \u2018which was fading away.\u2019 The verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the <i>corpus Paulinum <\/i>uniformly has the meaning \u2018to render inoperative, ineffective\u2019; the same nuance is appropriate here. The glory of Moses\u2019 face was rendered ineffective by the veil Moses wore. For discussion of the meaning of this verb in this context, see S. J. Hafemann, <i>Paul, Moses, and the History of Israel<\/i> (WUNT 81), 301-13. A similar translation has been adopted in the two other occurrences of the verb in this paragraph in vv. 11 and 13.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, if verse 7 means that the \u201cglory of Moses\u2019 face was rendered ineffective by the veil Moses wore,\u201d Paul expanded that meaning in verse 10: <i>For indeed, what had been glorious<\/i> [<i>the ministry that produced condemnation<\/i>] <i>now has <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn32\">no<\/a> glory <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn33\">because of<\/a> the tremendously greater glory of what replaced it<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> [<i>the ministry that produces righteousness<\/i>].\u00a0 Paul continued (2 Corinthians 3:11, 12 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For if what was made ineffective <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargoumenon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> came with glory, how much more has what remains<em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/men.html#menon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/men.html#menw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>come in glory! \u00a0Therefore, since we have such a hope, we behave with great boldness, and not like Moses who used to put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from staring at the result of the glory that was made ineffective <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargoumenou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Greek word translated remains is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/men.html#menon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/men.html#menw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>, as is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/men.html#menei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> in, <i>And now these three remain<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/men.html#menei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/men.html#menw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>): <i>faith, hope, and love.\u00a0 But the greatest of these is love<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is easy to see why some translators related the forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in 2 Corinthians 3 to those in 1 Corinthians 13 (vv. <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+13:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+13:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10, 11<\/a>;\u00a0<i>set aside<\/i>, NET) and rendered them as <i>passing away<\/i>.\u00a0 But the word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/men.html#menon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> is also found in, <i>The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/men.html#menon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) \u2013 <i>this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So it is also easy to see why other translators related what Paul said about the law, <i>the ministry that produced condemnation<\/i>, and <i>the ministry of the Spirit<\/i>, <i>the ministry that produces righteousness<\/i>, to Romans: \u00a0<i>For God achieved what the law could not do because it was weakened<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hs.html#hsqenei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f20\u03c3\u03b8\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/asq.html#asqenew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <i>through the flesh<\/i>.\u00a0 <i>By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and concerning sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous requirement of the law may be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It also makes sense then to relate this weakness <i>through the flesh<\/i> to the forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in 2 Corinthians 3 and render them as <i>made ineffective<\/i> (the law was <i>weakened through the flesh<\/i> to the point that it was <i>made ineffective<\/i> as far as righteousness is concerned).\u00a0 This makes even more sense if the writing of 2 Corinthians followed the writing of Romans sequentially rather than directly after 1 Corinthians.<\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/26\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-2\/#sdfootnote1sym\">Moses<\/a><\/i>\u2026<i>put a veil over <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/26\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-2\/#sdfootnote2sym\">his<\/a> face to keep the Israelites from staring at the result<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/tel.html#telos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <i>of the glory that was made ineffective<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote.\u00a0 In one sense he referred to the basic facts of Exodus 34:29-33 (NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand \u2013 when he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. \u00a0When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to approach him. \u00a0But Moses called to them, so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and Moses spoke to them. \u00a0After this all the Israelites approached, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken to him on Mount Sinai. \u00a0When Moses finished speaking with them, he would put a veil on his face.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So the <i>result<\/i> that the Israelites were kept from <i>staring at<\/i> was the glowing skin of Moses\u2019 face.\u00a0 There was another meaning to Paul\u2019s metaphor as well.\u00a0 <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/26\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-2\/#sdfootnote3sym\">But<\/a> their minds were closed<\/i>, He continued.\u00a0 <i>For <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/26\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-2\/#sdfootnote4sym\">to this very day<\/a>, the same veil remains when they hear the old covenant read<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> Here, the <i>result<\/i> or <i>end<\/i> that the veil keeps people from staring intently at is the fact that the law is <i>the ministry that produced condemnation<\/i>.\u00a0 <i>For the law brings wrath<\/i>\u2026<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>For no one is declared righteous before him<\/i> <i>by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 [The veil] <i>has not been removed <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/26\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-2\/#sdfootnote5sym\">because<\/a> only in Christ is it taken away<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargeitai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katar.html#katargew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 My mind was also closed when I tried to pass myself off as <i>in Christ<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/en.html#en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cr.html#cristw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a>) while striving to make myself righteous by keeping the law.<\/p>\n<p>[<b>Adendum<\/b> 6\/11\/2026: This insight was more profound than I realized at the time. I would now understand <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/en.html#en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cr.html#cristw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#DATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dative case<\/a> as \u201cby means of Christ.\u201d While my newfound desire for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esv.org\/verses\/Philippians+3:7%E2%80%9311\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>a righteousness of my own that comes from the law<\/i><\/a> was certainly \u201cby means of Christ,\u201d my attempt to satisfy that desire \u201cby keeping the law\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esv.org\/verses\/Philippians+2:12%E2%80%9313\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">missed the point entirely<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><i>But until this very day<\/i>, Paul continued, <i>whenever <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/26\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-2\/#sdfootnote6sym\">Moses<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/26\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-2\/#sdfootnote7sym\">is read<\/a>, a veil lies over their minds, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/26\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-2\/#sdfootnote8sym\">but when<\/a> one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. \u00a0Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is present, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/26\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-2\/#sdfootnote9sym\">there<\/a> is freedom. \u00a0And we all, with unveiled faces reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, which is from the Lord, who is the Spirit<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In my case the Lord was faithful even when I was not; <i>If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/02\/05\/the-new-covenant-part-2\/#_ftn29\">since<\/a> he cannot deny himself<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/09\/16\/saving-demons-part-2\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And perhaps I should let it go at that.\u00a0 But I still wonder, if I had remained faithless, or while I persisted in my faithlessness, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/05\/02\/romans-part-43\/\">did I give Him cause<\/a> to show mercy to demons or fallen angels, since He was and remains faithful to me?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Notice therefore the kindness and harshness of God \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/05\/20\/hannahs-prayer-part-1\/#_ftn6\">harshness<\/a> toward those who have fallen, but <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/05\/20\/hannahs-prayer-part-1\/#_ftn7\">God\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/05\/20\/hannahs-prayer-part-1\/#_ftn8\">kindness<\/a> toward you, provided you continue in his kindness;
