This is a continuation of my notes on 3 John for the preaching class I’m taking. One feature of a sermon introduction is to \u201cestablish the context of the passage.\u201d I have my own sketchy ideas about the historical context of 3 John, but would prefer to \u201cestablish the context\u201d from John’s writings instead (Revelation 19:11-16 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Then I saw heaven opened<\/a>, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has<\/a> a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called<\/a> is The Word of God [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. And the armies1<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on2<\/sup><\/a><\/em> white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword<\/a> with which to strike down<\/a> the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury3<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of the wrath of God the Almighty [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> written, King of kings and Lord of lords.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek verb translated knows<\/i> was \u03bf\u1f36\u03b4\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a> in the perfect tense<\/a>, rather than \u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5(\u03bd)<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>. It feels like a deliberate word choice to accentuate the more visual aspect of knowing inherent in \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>. The ESV translators understood \u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u1f44\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> in the nominative case as the subject of the clause. In my alternative version I understood it as the direct object in the accusative case. The difference seems inconsequential to me. The received texts had \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a middle\/passive form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the present tense, where the critical text had \u03ba\u1f73\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> in the perfect tense<\/a>. It is difficult to determine which verb the ESV translators encountered (ESV: he is called<\/em>) since they also translated \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b2\u03b5\u03b2\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a participle of \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b2\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> (also in the perfect tense) He is clothed<\/i>, along with \u03bf\u1f36\u03b4\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, translated knows<\/i>. But again, the difference seems inconsequential. <\/span><\/p>\n

The basic thought of the perfect tense is that the progress of an action has been completed and the results of the action are continuing on, in full effect. In other words, the progress of the action has reached its culmination and the finished results are now in existence. Unlike the English perfect, which indicates a completed past action, the Greek perfect tense indicates the continuation and present state of a completed past action.5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Understanding \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03ba\u1f73\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u1f44\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> as \u201cand He was named his name\u201d leads me to suspect that \u1f41<\/a> \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (The Word of God<\/i>) was the \u201cname written that no one has seen (or ‘known’) except himself.\u201d For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest<\/i>, Jesus promised, nor is anything secret that will not<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a> be known<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a> and come to light<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

By comparing occurrences<\/a> of \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> to occurrences<\/a> of \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> I found eleven other examples (see Table<\/a> below) of the phrase \u1f41<\/a> \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (the word of God) in the New Testament. None of them seem to be a personal name, with the possible exception of another example penned by John (1 John 2:14 ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n

I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God (\u1f41<\/a> \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>)<\/em> abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Even if John alluded to Jesus abiding with the young men<\/i> through his indwelling Holy Spirit, it would not exclude Jesus’ teaching or the written word of God. By comparing occurrences<\/a> of \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> to occurrences<\/a> of \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> in the Septuagint, I found one example of \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> in the Greek translation of the Old Testament.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This was unusual. The Hebrew phrase was usually translated \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (see Table<\/a> below). The NET translation, the Lord’s message<\/i>, though not as literal as the word of the Lord<\/i>, is fairly accurate. The name \u1f41<\/a> \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (The Word of God<\/i>) is revealed for the first time in: <\/span><\/p>\n

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John…9<\/sup><\/a><\/em> <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

John described Jesus in the majestic opening of his Gospel narrative in the light of this revelation of his name: The Word of God<\/em> (John 1:1-5 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For any who has ears to hear, the Greek translator’s choice of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a>, a 2nd<\/sup> person singular form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>, in Psalm 2:9 and John’s and the Holy Spirit’s choice of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a 3rd<\/sup> person singular form, in Revelation 19:15 are at least three witnesses that either \u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b9\u05e2\u05b5\u05bd\u05dd<\/a> or its parse as a form of \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05e2<\/a> (r\u0101\u02bfa\u02bf<\/i>) was not original to the Hebrew text of Psalm 2:9.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Torah texts that we read today are believed by some to be the same as those given to Moses and the people of Israel by God. For several centuries, various Masoretes continued to influence the pronunciation and writing of the text. However, the first \u201cofficial\u201d Bible text that is still used today was the Great Rabbinic Bible, published in 1524-1525 by Daniel Bomberg (a Christian in Venice).<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though negative evidence is more time consuming to acquire\u2014scrutinizing all 102 occurrences of forms of \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05e2<\/a> (r\u0101\u02bfa\u02bf<\/i>) in both the Hebrew of the Masoretic text and the Greek of the Septuagint (which I didn’t do)\u2014I did search for \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a> and all its forms listed in the Koine Greek Lexicon online in the BLB Septuagint<\/a>, and compared those results against the results listed for \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05e2<\/a> (r\u0101\u02bfa\u02bf<\/i>) on Blue Letter Bible online. I got no other matches. In other words, it doesn’t appear likely that any of the other occurrences of forms of \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05e2<\/a> (r\u0101\u02bfa\u02bf<\/i>) in the Masoretic text were translated with forms of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a> in the Septuagint. <\/span><\/p>\n

A note (5<\/a>) in the NET reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

Heb \u201ctend integrity.\u201d The verb \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4 (ra\u02bfah, \u201ctend, shepherd\u201d) is probably used here in the sense of \u201cwatch over, guard.\u201d The noun \u05d0\u05b1\u05de\u05d5\u05bc\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4 (\u02beemunah, \u201cfaithfulness, honesty, integrity\u201d) is understood as the direct object of the verb, though it could be taken as an adverbial accusative, \u201c[feed] securely,\u201d if the audience is likened to a flock of sheep.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Somehow it makes perfect sense to me that the NET translators would turn a promise into a work. It’s what I love about the NET. The translators are my contemporaries, who grew up in the same religious milieu, and translated the Bible accordingly.13<\/sup><\/a> They keep me from feeling absolutely insane. Perhaps I should rephrase that to say, they keep me from feeling absolutely alone in my insanity<\/a>. They confirm that I had some company<\/a> and encouragement<\/a> in it along the way. <\/span><\/p>\n

Understood as a promise of Israel’s military conquest of the heathen nations, \u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b9\u05e2\u05b5\u05bd\u05dd<\/a> (or whatever word was in the original text) in Psalm 2:9 could only be understood by the Masoretes as a form of \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05e2<\/a> (r\u0101\u02bfa\u02bf<\/i>, break<\/i>), rather than as a form of \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> (r\u0101\u02bf\u00e2<\/i>, shepherd<\/i>). But those of us heathen who recognize the benefit of the shepherding of the Lord Jesus Christ, the son of David<\/i><\/a>, the One condemned as a blasphemer by the High Priest and the Council (Mark 14:55-65<\/a>), crucified by the Romans (Mark 15:1-39<\/a>) and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead<\/i>,16<\/sup><\/a> find it easier to see that the rabbis who translated the Septuagint had it right as a form of \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> (r\u0101\u02bf\u00e2<\/i>) all along.<\/span><\/p>\n

The response of the people<\/i> to Joshua’s prophecy near the beginning of the old covenant is virtually identical<\/a> to that of Peter<\/i><\/a> and all the disciples<\/i><\/a> when Jesus (\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2<\/a> in Greek in the New Testament) revealed what was about to happen to them, according to the written word of God<\/a>, near the end of the old covenant. I belabor this point of connotation between he will rule<\/i> and \u201cHe will shepherd\u201d in Revelation 19:15 because the connotations of the English words which translate the warlike imagery describing the absolute power and authority of the Lord in the revelation of Jesus Christ are offered as excuses to doubt, dispute or deny Jesus’ clear declaration of God’s judgment (John 12:31, 32 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n
