It was brought to my attention recently in Matthew 12:18-21 that \u201cMatthew\u2019s and the Holy Spirit\u2019s word choices deserve a fuller consideration\u201d1<\/sup><\/a> (Matthew 12:18 ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBehold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though the rabbis who translated the Septuagint had good reason to assume that \u05e2\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u0599<\/a> (\u02bfe\u1e07e\u1e0f<\/i>), my servant<\/i> (Tanakh, KJV, NET) in Isaiah 42:1 referred to Jacob\/Israel, though they may have had a strong motivation to make that point explicit to Greek-speaking Gentiles, Matthew and the Holy Spirit, joined this time by the Masoretes, are at least three witnesses that \u05d4\u05b5\u059a\u05df<\/a> (h\u0113n<\/i>)\u2014Behold<\/i> (Tanakh, KJV), Here is<\/i> (NET), translated \u1f30\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7a<\/a> in the New Testament\u2014was more original. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Matthew and the Holy Spirit made it clear that Jesus fulfilled this particular word of the Lord (Matthew 12:15-17 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus, aware of this<\/a>, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known. This was3<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This isn’t particularly helpful for my immediate purpose since \u05de\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05de\u05b9\u05a3\u05da\u05b0<\/a> (t\u0101ma\u1e35<\/i>)\u2014from holding<\/i> (Tanakh, KJV), from grabbing hold<\/i> (NET)\u2014wasn’t translated in the Septuagint. Whether \u05de\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05b0\u05de\u05b9\u05a3\u05da\u05b0<\/a> (t\u0101ma\u1e35<\/i>) was absent from the text the rabbis translated, or they simply chose to shorten a cumbersome clause (consider the NET translation), is difficult to say. There are three occurrences<\/a> of \u1f91\u03c1\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03b1\u1f31\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>, in the Septuagint. The verb \u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>, is in the middle voice: \u201cThe Greek middle voice shows the subject acting in his own interest or on his own behalf, or participating in the results of the verbal action.\u201d4<\/sup><\/a> The verb \u1f20\u03c1\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03b1\u1f31\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>, is in the active voice: \u201cIf the subject of the sentence is executing the action, then the verb is referred to as being in the active voice.\u201d5<\/sup><\/a> I may be more sensitive to this than some because I spent some time assuming that the Gospel \u201cwas more for God’s benefit than mine,\u201d6<\/sup><\/a> but making it clear that God chose Jesus for my benefit could account for Matthew’s and the Holy Spirit’s word choice. I can’t say for certain that no 1st<\/sup> person singular form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9<\/a> in the aorist tense<\/a> and active voice exists, but none is listed in the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online. And this is the only occurrence<\/a> of \u1f20\u03c1\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1<\/a> (or any other form of \u03b1\u1f31\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) in the New Testament.<\/span><\/p>\n

In another essay<\/a> following a table comparing the Greek of Matthew’s \u201cquotation\u201d of Isaiah 42:1 in Matthew 12:18, I wrote: \u201cHere again, it seems that Matthew did some of his own translation from Hebrew.\u201d So, what do I make of Matthew’s \u201cmisquotation\u201d of the first four7<\/sup><\/a> Hebrew words of Isaiah 42:1? <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>The idea that Matthew 12:18 might or should correspond to Isaiah 42:1 came from a footnote (28<\/a>) in the NET:<\/span><\/p>\n

Verses 18-21 are a quotation from Isa 42:1-4.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s not part of the text of Scripture. The Scripture says (Matthew 12:17 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek is: \u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>8<\/sup><\/a>, This was<\/i>, \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a>, to fulfill<\/i>. There is nothing wrong with the translation This was to fulfill<\/i>. It is an excellent English translation. It is precisely what a Greek verb in the subjunctive mood means in a result clause. It just surprises me because this phrase would be translated \u201cso that He may fulfill\u201d more often than not, honoring the subjunctive verb \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a>, expecting the reader to know that it \u201cshould be viewed as a definite outcome that will happen as a result of another stated action.\u201d9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201canother stated action\u201d in this case is (Matthew 12:15b, 16 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek of Matthew 12:17 continues: \u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u1f72\u03bd<\/a>, what was spoken<\/i>, \u03b4\u03b9\u1f70<\/a> \u1f28\u03c3\u03b1\u0390\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, by Isaiah<\/i>, \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1f75\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, the prophet<\/i>, \u03bb\u1f73\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, \u201csaying.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>The only qualification here is what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet<\/i>. The NET footnote is helpful as a hint where one might start looking, but not limiting in any way. So, Behold, my servant<\/i> refers quite clearly to the first two Hebrew words of Isaiah 42:1<\/a> in the Masoretic text (click on the word \u201cHebrew\u201d at the top of the right hand column to see the parallel Hebrew text), despite the subtle difference in the Greek text of the Septuagint. And whom I have chosen<\/i> refers to the fifth and sixth Hebrew words (remember to count from right to left) of Isaiah 41:8<\/a>, and the last two Hebrew words of Isaiah 44:1<\/a> and 44:2<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

In the Septuagint these forms of \u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05d7\u05b7\u05e8<\/a> (b\u0101\u1e25ar<\/i>) were translated with \u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> in the middle voice<\/a>, rather than \u1f20\u03c1\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1<\/a> in the active voice<\/a> as Matthew has done. There are four occurrences<\/a> of \u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> in the New Testament. All of them occur in John’s Gospel narrative, referring to Jesus’ selection of his disciples (John 6:70; 13:18; 15:16, 19 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus answered them, \u201cDid I not choose (\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom<\/a> I have chosen (\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, \u2018He who ate my<\/a> bread has lifted his heel against me\u201910<\/sup><\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You did not choose me, but I chose (\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It seems important to highlight these occurrences to at least begin to meditate on their differences. As Jesus prayed: And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent<\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a> Why did Matthew choose the active voice<\/a> \u1f20\u03c1\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1<\/a> for God’s selection of Jesus when the rabbis clearly chose the middle voice<\/a> \u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> for His selection of Israel, Jacob and Jeshurun (Septuagint: Israel<\/em>)? Why did John choose the middle voice<\/a> \u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> for Jesus’ selection of his disciples? <\/span><\/p>\n

During a night’s rest as I prepared this essay for publication, the beginnings of that meditation (something beyond a self-centered correction of my own self-centered mistake about benefit<\/i>) coalesced: to know<\/i>…the only true God<\/i> \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f43\u03bd<\/a> \u1f00\u03c0\u1f73\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, and whom you have sent <\/i>(or \u201cwhom you sent forth\u201d), \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f79\u03bd<\/a>, Jesus Christ<\/i>. The first thing I did in the above paragraph after making John 17:3, the reason \u201cIt seems important to highlight these occurrences,\u201d explicit (rather than keeping it a secret for the reader to ferret out) was to edit an error: I corrected \u201cfor the Father’s selection of Jesus\u201d to \u201cfor God’s selection of Jesus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>I was thinking of whom I have chosen<\/i><\/a> as the Father’s selection of the Son. That was wrong. Just as the conjunction \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> (and<\/em>) in Jesus’ prayer<\/a> doesn’t deny his divinity but highlights and accentuates his humanity, even as the new human (\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness<\/i>,12<\/sup><\/a> so God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) chose this new human: Behold, my servant whom I have chosen<\/i>. Eternal life is to know the only true God<\/i> (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and this new human. How? by knowing Jesus Christ, through the Bible certainly, yet equally if not more importantly, through the time spent with the One who died to fulfill the Scriptures<\/a>. He is an eager and able teacher.<\/span><\/p>\n
