And this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/140.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only occurrence<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hr.html#hretisa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f20\u03c1\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1<\/a> (or any other form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/air.html#airetizw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b1\u1f31\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) in the New Testament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In another <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/#_Tabled\">essay<\/a> following a table comparing the Greek of Matthew&#8217;s \u201cquotation\u201d of Isaiah 42:1 in Matthew 12:18, I wrote: \u201cHere again, it seems that Matthew did some of his own translation from Hebrew.\u201d So, what do I make of Matthew&#8217;s \u201cmisquotation\u201d of the first four<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/07\/24\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-1\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> Hebrew words of Isaiah 42:1? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_idea\"><\/a>The idea that Matthew 12:18 might or should correspond to Isaiah 42:1 came from a footnote (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+12:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">28<\/a>) in the NET:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Verses 18-21 are a quotation from Isa 42:1-4.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It&#8217;s not part of the text of Scripture. The Scripture says (Matthew 12:17 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek is: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/in.html#ina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/07\/24\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-1\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>, <i>This was<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhrwqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a>, <i>to fulfill<\/i>. There is nothing wrong with the translation <i>This was to fulfill<\/i>. It is an excellent English translation. It is precisely what a Greek verb in the subjunctive mood means in a result clause. It just surprises me because this phrase would be translated \u201cso that He may fulfill\u201d more often than not, honoring the subjunctive verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhrwqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a>, expecting the reader to know that it \u201cshould be viewed as a definite outcome that will happen as a result of another stated action.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/07\/24\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-1\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u201canother stated action\u201d in this case is (Matthew 12:15b, 16 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek of Matthew 12:17 continues: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f78<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/rh.html#rhqen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u1f72\u03bd<\/a>, <i>what was spoken<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dia.html#dia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u1f70<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/hs.html#hsaiou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f28\u03c3\u03b1\u0390\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, <i>by Isaiah<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/prof.html#profhtou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1f75\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, <i>the prophet<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/le.html#legontes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u1f73\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, \u201csaying.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_source\"><\/a>The only qualification here is <i>what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet<\/i>. The NET footnote is helpful as a hint where one might start looking, but not limiting in any way. So, <i>Behold, my servant<\/i> refers quite clearly to the first two Hebrew words of <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Isaiah+42:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 42:1<\/a> in the Masoretic text (click on the word \u201cHebrew\u201d at the top of the right hand column to see the parallel Hebrew text), despite the subtle difference in the Greek text of the Septuagint. And <i>whom I have chosen<\/i> refers to the fifth and sixth Hebrew words (remember to count from right to left) of <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Isaiah+41:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 41:8<\/a>, and the last two Hebrew words of <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Isaiah+44:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 44:1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Isaiah+44:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">44:2<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the Septuagint these forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h977\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05d7\u05b7\u05e8<\/a> (<i>b\u0101\u1e25ar<\/i>) were translated with <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exel.html#exelexamhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle voice<\/a>, rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hr.html#hretisa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f20\u03c1\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">active voice<\/a> as Matthew has done. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/exelexame_n_1586.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four occurrences<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exel.html#exelexamhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> in the New Testament. All of them occur in John&#8217;s Gospel narrative, referring to Jesus&#8217; selection of his disciples (John 6:70; 13:18; 15:16, 19 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Jesus answered them, \u201cDid I not choose <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exel.html#exelexamhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ekl.html#eklegw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> you, the twelve? But the Scripture will be fulfilled, \u2018He who ate <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn43\">my<\/a> bread has lifted his heel against me\u2019<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/07\/24\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-1\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You did not choose me, but I chose <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exel.html#exelexamhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ekl.html#eklegw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exel.html#exelexamhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ekl.html#eklegw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It seems important to highlight these occurrences to at least begin to meditate on their differences. As Jesus prayed: <i>And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/07\/24\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-1\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> Why did Matthew choose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">active voice<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hr.html#hretisa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f20\u03c1\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1<\/a> for God&#8217;s selection of Jesus when the rabbis clearly chose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle voice<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exel.html#exelexamhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> for His selection of Israel, Jacob and Jeshurun (Septuagint: <em>Israel<\/em>)? Why did John choose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle voice<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exel.html#exelexamhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03be\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> for Jesus&#8217; selection of his disciples? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During a night&#8217;s rest as I prepared this essay for publication, the beginnings of that meditation (something beyond a self-centered correction of my own self-centered mistake about <i>benefit<\/i>) coalesced: to <i>know<\/i>&#8230;<i>the only true God<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html#kai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/on.html#on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f43\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apes.html#apesteilas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1f73\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, <i>and whom you have sent <\/i>(or \u201cwhom you sent forth\u201d), <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/ih.html#ihsoun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cr.html#criston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f79\u03bd<\/a>, <i>Jesus Christ<\/i>. The first thing I did in the above paragraph after making John 17:3, the reason \u201cIt seems important to highlight these occurrences,\u201d explicit (rather than keeping it a secret for the reader to ferret out) was to edit an error: I corrected \u201cfor the Father&#8217;s selection of Jesus\u201d to \u201cfor God&#8217;s selection of Jesus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_new_human\"><\/a>I was thinking of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2012%3A18&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>whom I have chosen<\/i><\/a> as the Father&#8217;s selection of the Son. That was wrong. Just as the conjunction <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html#kai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> (<em>and<\/em>) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2017%3A1%2D3&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus&#8217; prayer<\/a> doesn&#8217;t deny his divinity but highlights and accentuates his humanity, even as the new human (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#ton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html#kainon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anq.html#anqrwpon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) <i>created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/07\/24\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-1\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> so God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) chose this new human: <i>Behold, my servant whom I have chosen<\/i>. Eternal life is to know <i>the only true God<\/i> (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and this new human. How? by knowing Jesus Christ, through the Bible certainly, yet equally if not more importantly, through the time spent with the One who died <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2026%3A54&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to fulfill the Scriptures<\/a>. He is an eager and able teacher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ll continue considering Matthew 12:18-21 in detail in another essay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:
