This is a continuation of my notes on 3 John for the preaching class I’m taking. A Catholic friend concluded that 3 John is about the canonization<\/a> of the saints. John wrote that, Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority<\/i>,1<\/sup><\/a> right before his command: do not imitate evil but imitate good<\/i>. And then after it he wrote, Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself<\/i>. We also add our testimony, and you know<\/a> that our testimony is true<\/i>.2<\/sup><\/a> It\u00a0seems natural in context to conclude that good<\/i> (\u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f79\u03bd<\/a>) refers to people: And who better than the church\u00a0to decide which people are worthy of imitation (our testimony is true<\/i>)?<\/span><\/p>\n

I had already written something like this in a draft of my sermon introduction:<\/span><\/p>\n

Beloved, John commanded the reader of his 3rd<\/sup> letter, <\/em>do not imitate evil but imitate good.3<\/sup><\/a> But who is good in dark times when an agent of <\/em>the spirit of the antichrist4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> stops those who want to welcome the brothers and puts them out of the church?5<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next saying of Jesus’ I plan to consider\u2014\u201cHow does Jesus relate to \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f79\u03bd<\/a>?\u201d6<\/sup><\/a>\u2014begins (Matthew 19:16, 17a ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n

And behold, a man came up to him, saying, \u201cTeacher,7<\/sup><\/a><\/em> what good (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> deed must I do to have8<\/sup><\/a><\/em> eternal life?\u201d And he said to him, \u201cWhy do you ask me about what is good (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>?9<\/sup><\/a><\/em> There is10<\/sup><\/a><\/em> only one11<\/sup><\/a><\/em> who is12<\/sup><\/a><\/em> good (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>There is a cleaner way to translate Jesus’ answer from the critical text, which I’ll use both to highlight the contrast between critical and received texts and to introduce the actual subject I intend to pursue for some time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why ask me about the good? One is the good.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>I’ll return to this in more detail<\/a> later. Here, I want to pursue how it is that a prophet who from God exists<\/a> cannot <\/i>(\u03bf\u1f50<\/a> \u03b4\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) bear bad fruit<\/i>.16<\/sup><\/a> Moses and the Holy Spirit wrote at some length about it (Numbers 22:1, 4b-7 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the people of Israel set out and camped in the plains of Moab (Genesis 19:30-38<\/a>)<\/em> beyond the Jordan at Jericho.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

…Balak the son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the people of Amaw, to call him, saying, \u201cBehold, a people has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the earth, and they are dwelling opposite me. Come now, curse this people for me, since they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them from the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian (Exodus 2:11-15<\/a>)<\/em> departed with the fees for divination in their hand. And they came to Balaam and gave him Balak\u2019s message.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Balak had heard of Balaam’s fame: I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed<\/i>.17<\/sup><\/a> He assumed Balaam’s services were for hire. But Balaam said (Numbers 22:8 ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the Lord speaks to me.\u201d So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Hebrew word translated Lord<\/i> was \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u0596\u05d4<\/a> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>), which is corroborated by the translation \u039a\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint. Things weren’t turning out quite the way Balak had planned (Numbers 22:12-14 ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n

God said to Balaam, \u201cYou shall not go with them. You shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.\u201d So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, \u201cGo to your own land, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.\u201d So the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak and said, \u201cBalaam refuses to come with us.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Hebrew word translated God<\/i> was \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd\u0599<\/a> (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/i>), which was translated \u1f41<\/a> \u0398\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint. So \u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b0\u05db\u05b6\u0591\u05dd<\/a> (‘ere\u1e63<\/i>), your land<\/i> in the Masoretic text, is \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03ba\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, your master<\/i> (BLB) or your lord<\/i> (English Elpenor), in the Septuagint. But Balaam’s refusal didn’t deter Balak at all: Once again Balak sent princes, more in number and more honorable than these<\/i>18<\/sup><\/a> with an open-ended offer of reward. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>Balak was a man of great faith, not in the Lord but in his own knowledge of men. Glenn Nicholls<\/a>, a Nietzschean psychotherapist, wrote about this kind of faith<\/i>:<\/span><\/p>\n

Nietzsche\u2019s concern was that we might forever remain tethered to the human in ourselves; that we would never become the overman. God tethers us to the human. As long as we seek gods we give away our authority and can never become who we are…<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The drive or will to faith can be conscious or unconscious. We tell ourselves, \u2018I found God and discovered faith\u2019. No, faith is object seeking; if it does not find a god it will make one up.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

If you are not sure if you have a god, look to see where you put your faith. You do not need to believe in a god to have one, and often those with the strongest faith are those who do not believe in one.19<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, their faith is part of the grammar<\/i><\/a> that structures their reality, especially as it pertains to their own power (\u201cauthority\u201d). But Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, \u201cThough Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the Lord my God to do less or more<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a> In the Septuagint I could not<\/i> was translated I shall not be able<\/i>: \u03bf\u1f50<\/a> \u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a 1st<\/sup> person form of \u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> in the future tense<\/a> and indicative mood<\/a>. Here, a prophet acknowledged what Jesus said about good fruit trees that cannot <\/i>(\u03bf\u1f50<\/a> \u03b4\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a 3rd<\/sup> person form of \u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> in the present tense<\/a> and indicative mood<\/a>) bear bad fruit<\/i>. From Balaam’s lips, however, it sounds less definitional and more causal, actually producing the specified effect. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>Still, Balaam seems all too eager to test the Lord to see if there is any possible way to acquire Balak’s house full of silver and gold<\/i> (Numbers 22:19-22a ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, there is no possibility that Balaam will fulfill Balak’s desire to curse Israel\u2014You shall not curse the people, for they are blessed<\/i>22<\/sup><\/a>\u2014to earn a house full of silver and gold<\/i>: A healthy <\/i>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) tree cannot bear bad fruit<\/i>.23<\/sup><\/a> And by going with the men, Balaam demonstrated that his lust for a house full of silver and gold<\/i> was driving him on rather than his trust in the absolute word of God. <\/span><\/p>\n

Peter summarized what happened next (2 Peter 2:15, 16 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Forsaking24<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the25<\/sup><\/a><\/em> right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet\u2019s madness (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Balaam couldn’t see the angel threatening him (Numbers 22:22b-27 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Now he was riding on the donkey, and his two servants were with him. Balaam was so consumed by lust for a house full of silver and gold<\/i>, he didn’t recognize the hand of God in the unusual behavior of his donkey. The Lord (Septuagint: God<\/i>) intervened on behalf of his suffering donkey (Numbers 22:28 ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n

Then the Lord (<\/em>Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2, \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>; Septuagint: \u1f41<\/a> \u0398\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, \u201cWhat have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This reminds me of the words of John the Baptist to the Pharisees and Sadducees (Matthew 3:7-10 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, \u201cYou brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit in keeping26<\/sup><\/a><\/em> with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, \u2018We have Abraham as our father,\u2019 for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now<\/a> the axe is laid to the root of the trees. God demonstrated that He could have sent Balaam’s donkey to prophesy to Balak, a donkey with no desire for silver or gold whatsoever. Balaam was so consumed by lust for a house full of silver and gold<\/i>, he didn’t even notice (Numbers 22:29, 30 ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n

And Balaam said to the donkey, \u201cBecause you have made a fool of me. I wish I had a sword in my hand, for then I would kill you.\u201d And the donkey said to Balaam, \u201cAm I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Is it my habit to treat you this way?\u201d And he said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A talking donkey was not sufficient to reach Balaam, so the Lord (Septuagint: God<\/i>) intervened again, both to spare his life and to make him understand (Numbers 22:31-34 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the Lord (<\/em>Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2, \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>; Septuagint: \u1f41<\/a> \u0398\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord (<\/em>Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2, \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> corroborated by \u039a\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> in the Septuagint)<\/em> standing in the way, with his drawn sword in his hand. This is a beautiful illustration of the Lord’s word to Israel through Ezekiel:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: \u2018Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we rot away because of them. How then can we live?<\/a>\u2019 [Table<\/a>]<\/em> Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel? [Table<\/a>]27<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then came an unexpected turn of events, which confirms for me that the issue was Balaam’s lust for a house full of silver and gold<\/i> (Numbers 22:35 ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n

And the angel of the Lord (<\/em>Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2, \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>; Septuagint: \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u0398\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>)<\/em> said to Balaam, \u201cGo with the men, but speak only the word that I tell you.\u201d So Balaam went on with the princes of Balak.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the NETS translation of the Septuagint, the angel promised: the word that I say to you, this you shall take heed to speak<\/i>. The Greek word translated you shall take heed<\/i> was \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u1f71\u03be\u1fc3<\/a>, a 2nd<\/sup> person singular form of \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> in the future tense, middle voice<\/a> and indicative mood<\/a>\u2014a statement of fact, a promise and a prophesy. When Balak met him, Balaam was not swayed by the king’s anger, abuse or intimidation (Numbers 22:38 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

Balaam said to Balak, \u201cBehold, I have come to you! Have I now any power of my own to speak anything?
