Jephthah led<\/em> (\u0161\u0101p\u0304a\u1e6d<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05a5\u05b9\u05d8<\/a>) Israel for six years; then he died and was buried in his city in Gilead<\/em>.1<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Samuel mentioned Jephthah, along with himself, as one the Lord\u00a0sent<\/em> as a deliverer\u00a0from the\u00a0hand\u00a0of the enemies\u00a0all around\u00a0you, and you were able to live\u00a0securely<\/em>2<\/sup><\/a> when the people cried out to the Lord and admitted, \u201cWe have sinned, for we have forsaken the Lord and have served the Baals and the images of Ashtoreth.\u00a0 Now deliver us from the hand of our enemies so that we may serve you.\u201d<\/em>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Though there are some differences in the list of Judges Samuel mentioned between the LXX (the Greek translation of the Old Testament), the Targum and the Syriac Peshitta according to the footnote (19<\/a>) in the NET, Jephthah made all three lists.\u00a0 Jephthah was remembered again as a man of faith in Hebrews 11:32 (NET):<\/p>\n

And what more shall I say? \u00a0For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak,4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Samson,5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>He is certainly worth my consideration. \u00a0Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a brave warrior.\u00a0 His mother was a prostitute<\/em> (z\u0101n\u00e2<\/em>, \u05d6\u05d5\u05e0\u05d4<\/a>), but Gilead was his father<\/em>.6<\/sup><\/a> Gilead had other sons by his wife.\u00a0 When they grew up, they made Jephthah leave and said to him, \u201cYou are not going to inherit any of our father\u2019s wealth, because you are another woman\u2019s son.\u201d So Jephthah left his half-brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Lawless men joined Jephthah\u2019s gang and traveled with him <\/em>[See Addendum<\/a> below].7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Later, When the Ammonites attacked, the leaders<\/em> (z\u0101q\u0113n<\/em>, \u05d6\u05e7\u05e0\u05d9<\/a>) of Gilead asked Jephthah to come back from the land of Tob<\/em>.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They wanted him to be their commander (q\u0101\u1e63\u00een<\/em>, \u05dc\u05e7\u05e6\u05d9\u05df<\/a>) in battle.\u00a0 When Jephthah recounted how they had treated him previously they pledged their loyalty to him as their leader (r\u014d’\u0161<\/em>, \u05dc\u05e8\u05d0\u05e9<\/a>) if he would lead them victoriously in battle against the Ammonites (Judges 11:9-11 NET).<\/p>\n

Jephthah said to the leaders of Gilead, \u201cAll right!\u00a0 If you take me back to fight with the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me, I will be your leader (<\/em>r\u014d’\u0161, \u05dc\u05e8\u05d0\u05e9)<\/em>.\u201d \u00a0The leaders of Gilead said to Jephthah, \u201cThe Lord will judge any grievance you have against us, if we do not do as you say.\u201d \u00a0So Jephthah went with the leaders of Gilead.\u00a0 The people made him their leader (<\/em>r\u014d’\u0161, \u05dc\u05e8\u05d0\u05e9)<\/em> and commander (<\/em>q\u0101\u1e63\u00een, \u05d5\u05dc\u05e7\u05e6\u05d9\u05df<\/a>)<\/em>.\u00a0 Jephthah repeated the terms of the agreement before the Lord in Mizpah.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So while Barak was appointed to his judgeship by the prophetess Deborah,9<\/sup><\/a> and the Lord himself<\/em> called Gideon (also known as Jerub-Baal),10<\/sup><\/a> Jephthah rose to prominence through a backroom deal sanctified after the fact as an oath, or contract, at a holy place.\u00a0 These circumstances in and of themselves don\u2019t necessarily mean that Jephthah was not one the Lord\u2026raised<\/em> (q\u00fbm<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05e7\u05dd<\/a>) up<\/em> as a deliverer<\/em> (y\u0101\u0161a<\/em>, \u05de\u05d5\u05e9\u05d9\u05e2<\/a>), like Othniel in Judges 3:7-11 (NET)<\/a> or Ehud in Judges 3:12-30 (NET)<\/a>.\u00a0 The text does not relate the circumstances of Othniel\u2019s calling, nor those under which Ehud was raised up<\/em>.\u00a0 If it did I might find those circumstances as curious as the calling<\/em> of Jephthah.<\/p>\n

In the New Testament Paul described the calling of many in Corinth like this (1 Corinthians 1:26-29 NET):<\/p>\n

Think about the circumstances of your call, brothers and sisters.\u00a0 Not many were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position. \u00a0But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong. \u00a0God chose what is low and despised in the world,11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something, so that no one can boast in his12<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>presence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the book of Judges the Lord whittled Gideon\u2019s army down from 32,000 to 300 warriors for exactly the same reason (Judges 7:2 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

The Lord said to Gideon, \u201cYou have too many men for me to hand Midian over to you.\u00a0 Israel might brag, \u2018Our own strength has delivered us.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is worthy of mention about Jephthah\u2019s calling however is that it comes after the Lord has become so tired of this Monotonous Cycle<\/em><\/a> of apostasy and repentance in Israel that He said (Judges 10:11-14 NET):<\/p>\n

Did I not deliver you from Egypt, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, the Sidonians, Amalek, and Midian when they oppressed you?\u00a0 You cried out for help to me, and I delivered you from their power. \u00a0But since you abandoned me and worshiped other gods, I will not deliver you again. \u00a0Go and cry for help to the gods you have chosen!\u00a0 Let them deliver you from trouble!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But the Israelites said to the Lord, \u201cWe have sinned.\u00a0 You do to us as you see fit, but deliver us today!\u201d \u00a0They threw away the foreign gods they owned and worshiped the Lord.\u00a0 Finally the Lord grew tired of seeing Israel suffer so much.<\/em>13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Before I get too carried away by the thought that a marauding leader of lawless men [See Addendum<\/a> below], the exiled son of a professional (or eager amateur) devotee of one of the Baals or Ashtars14<\/sup><\/a> was exactly the kind of deliverer <\/em>these Israelites deserved<\/a>, I had better check myself and understand exactly who this marauding leader of lawless men, the exiled son of a professional (or eager amateur) devotee of one of the Baals or Ashtars was.<\/p>\n
