Two Covenants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After the incident with the golden calf, after Yahweh <i>relented over the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/\">evil<\/a> that he had said he would do to his people<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/31\/the-two-covenants\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> honoring the covenant they violated, after He spoke his long name to Moses, He revealed a revised covenant.\u00a0 It was similar to the original covenant that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/\">ended<\/a> with the worship of the golden calf, when the<b><i> people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play<\/i><\/b>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/31\/the-two-covenants\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But it was different, too, in some remarkable ways.\u00a0 What I have called the preamble to the two covenants is contrasted below.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" Lord, let my Lord go among us, for we are a stiff-necked people; pardon our\u00a0iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Exodus 34:8, 9 nations, for all the earth is mine, and you will be\u00a0to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.\u2019\u00a0 These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Exodus 19:5, 6 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">[The Lord] said, \u201cSee, I am going to make a covenant before all your people.\u00a0 I will do wonders such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation.\u00a0 All the people among whom you live will see the work of the Lord, for it is a fearful thing that I am doing with\u00a0you.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Exodus 34:10 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Before the golden calf Moses <i>went up to God<\/i> like a victor receiving a crown.\u00a0 <i>You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt<\/i>, the Lord instructed him to say to the Israelites, <i>and how I lifted you on eagles\u2019 wings and brought you to myself<\/i>.\u00a0 After the golden calf <i>Moses quickly bowed to the ground and worshiped and said, \u201cIf now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, let my Lord go among us, for we are a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0 How reminiscent this is of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/\">righteous prayer<\/a>: <i>God, be merciful to me, sinner that I am!<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/31\/the-two-covenants\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Before the golden calf the covenant was expressed conditionally, <i>if you will diligently listen to me and keep my covenant, then you will be my special possession out of all the nations, for all the earth is mine, and you will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation<\/i>.\u00a0 But afterward it is simply a unilateral declaration: <i>I am going to make a covenant before all your people.\u00a0 I will do wonders such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation.\u00a0 All the people among whom you live will see the work of the Lord, for it is a fearful<\/i> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc\">y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/a><\/em>) <i>thing that I am doing with you<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The Ten Commandments were part of both covenants.\u00a0 It was part of the first covenant because Exodus 20 is after the preamble in Exodus 19 and before the inauguration of the covenant in Exodus 24.\u00a0 <i>Moses came and told the people all the Lord\u2019s words and all the decisions. \u00a0All the people answered together, \u201cWe are willing to do all the words<\/i> (<em>dabar<\/em>, \u05d4\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd) <i>that the Lord has said,\u201d and Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/31\/the-two-covenants\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<i>So<\/i><i> <\/i><i>Moses<\/i><i> <\/i><i>took<\/i><i> <\/i><i>the blood<\/i><i> <\/i><i>and splashed<\/i><i> <\/i><i>it on<\/i><i> <\/i><i>the people<\/i><i> <\/i><i>and said<\/i><i>, <\/i><i>\u201cThis is<\/i><i> <\/i><i>the blood<\/i><i> <\/i><i>of the covenant<\/i><i> <\/i><i>that<\/i><i> <\/i><i>the Lord<\/i><i> <\/i><i>has<\/i><i> <\/i><i>made with<\/i><i> <\/i><i>you in accordance with all<\/i><i> <\/i><i>these<\/i><i> <\/i><i>words<\/i> next covenant because, <i>The Lord said to Moses, \u201cWrite down these words<\/i> (<em>dabar<\/em>, \u05d4\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd), <i>for in accordance with these words<\/i> (<em>dabar<\/em>, \u05d4\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd) <i>I have made a covenant with you and with Israel\u2026.\u201d \u00a0He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments<\/i> (<em>dabar<\/em>, as above).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/31\/the-two-covenants\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I borrowed the still law.\u00a0 They still offer knowledge of sin.\u00a0 That sin however did not jeopardize the covenant.\u00a0 Perhaps the most significant omission for the purposes of this essay was in the section labeled \u201cMoral and Ceremonial Laws,\u201d <i>Whoever sacrifices to a god other than the Lord alone must be utterly destroyed<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/31\/the-two-covenants\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I think all of this will become clearer with its revision at the language of this new covenant is startlingly similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/\">the Lord\u2019s words to Peter<\/a>:\u00a0 <i>I tell you, Peter, the rooster will <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote22sym\">not<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote23sym\">crow<\/a> today <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote24sym\">until<\/a> you have denied three times that you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote25sym\">know<\/a> me<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/31\/the-two-covenants\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 [W]<i>hen they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone invites you, you will eat from his sacrifice; and you then take his daughters for your sons, and when his daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will make your sons prostitute themselves to their gods as well<\/i>.\u00a0 And once you see all of this, it is as if He had said, when you see that it happens as I have said, <i>When you have turned back, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote21sym\">strengthen<\/a> your brothers<\/i>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/31\/the-two-covenants\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> or, <i>You must not make yourselves molten gods<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>And while I think it is perfectly clear that this language is a revision of Exodus 23:32 and 33, it also seems clear that it is the only language that comes close to replacing the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/\">covenant-ending<\/a>\u2014<i>Whoever sacrifices to a god other than the Lord alone must be utterly
