An <i>acceptable<\/i> offering is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke%201:26-38&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">male<\/a> (Leviticus 22:17-19 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, \u201cSpeak to Aaron and his sons and all the people of Israel and say to them, When any one of the house of Israel or of the sojourners in Israel presents a burnt offering as his offering, for any of their vows or freewill offerings that they offer to the Lord, if it is to be accepted for you it shall be a male without blemish, of the bulls or the sheep or the goats. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Hebrew noun translated <i>if it is to be accepted for you<\/i> was \u05dc\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b9\u05e0\u05b0\u05db\u05b6\u05dd, a 2<sup>nd<\/sup> person plural masculine form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7522\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/a> (<i>r\u0101\u1e63\u00f4n<\/i>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dek.html#dekta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u1f70<\/a>, <i>these shall be acceptable<\/i> (NETS) or <i>free-will-offerings<\/i> (English Elpenor), in the Septuagint. This divergence in the English translations of the Septuagint is reflected in the English translation of the Masoretic text as well: <i>Ye shall offer at your own will<\/i> (KJV). While the noun \u05dc\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b9\u05e0\u05b0\u05db\u05b6\u05dd, this form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7522\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/a> (<i>r\u0101\u1e63\u00f4n<\/i>), includes <i>will<\/i> as a potential translation\u2014\u201cpleasure, delight, favour, goodwill, acceptance, will\u201d\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dek.html#dekta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u1f70<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dek.html#dektos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>, does not\u2014\u201cacceptable, favourable, convenient; appropriate, convenient; received, accepted, welcomed, approved.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A note (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Leviticus+22:19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">39<\/a>) in the NET translates \u05dc\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b9\u05e0\u05b0\u05db\u05b6\u05dd, this form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7522\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/a> (<i>r\u0101\u1e63\u00f4n<\/i>), \u201cfor your acceptance\u201d and directs one back to Leviticus 1:3, 4 (ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer a male without blemish. He shall bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted <em>(\u05dc\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b9\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7522\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/a>, <\/em>r\u0101\u1e63\u00f4n<em>; Septuagint: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dek.html#dekton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> before the Lord <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/08\/25\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-7\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted <em>(\u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b8\u05d4, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7521\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>, <\/em>r\u0101\u1e63\u00e2<em>; Septuagint: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dek.html#dekton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> for him to make atonement for him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/08\/25\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-7\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here the noun \u05dc\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b9\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9, this form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7522\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/a>\u00a0(<i>r\u0101\u1e63\u00f4n<\/i>), was immediately related to the verb \u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b8\u05d4, this form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7521\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>\u00a0(<i>r\u0101\u1e63\u00e2<\/i>). And here again, the noun was translated <i>of his own voluntary will<\/i> in the KJV. But in the Septuagint <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dek.html#dekton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dek.html#dektos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>, was translated <i>acceptable<\/i> (NETS) and <i>as acceptable<\/i> (English Elpenor) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/08\/25\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-7\/#_Table6\">Table<\/a>]. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An <i>acceptable<\/i> offering <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Hebrews%207%3A11-28&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">must be perfect<\/a><\/i> (Leviticus 22:20, 21a ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You shall not offer anything that has a blemish, for it will not be acceptable <em>(\u05dc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05d5\u05b9\u05df, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7522\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05d5\u05b9\u05df<\/a>, <\/em>r\u0101\u1e63\u00f4n<em>; Septuagint: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dek.html#dekton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> for you. Though the translation <i>must be<\/i> leads me to expect an imperative verb of being, \u05d9\u05b4\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05d4, this form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h1961\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> (<i>h\u0101y\u00e2<\/i>), is listed as a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/03\/08\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-3\/#_Qal\">Qal<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/04\/04\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-4\/#_perfect_imperfect\">imperfect<\/a> verb translated <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#estai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> in the Septuagint, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eim.html#eimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03bc\u03af<\/a> in the future tense and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle voice<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#INDICATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicative mood<\/a> (a statement of fact and a promise). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Lord defined the adjective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h8549\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (<i>t\u0101m\u00eem<\/i>) as it pertained to a sacrificial animal (Leviticus 22:21b-25 ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8230;there shall be no blemish in it. Animals blind or disabled or mutilated or having a discharge or an itch or scabs you shall not offer to the Lord or give them to the Lord as a food offering on the altar. You may present a bull or a lamb that has a part too long or too short for a freewill offering, but for a vow offering it cannot be accepted <em>(\u05d9\u05b5\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05b6\u05d4, a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/04\/04\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-4\/#_Niphal\">Niphal<\/a> form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7521\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>, <\/em>r\u0101\u1e63\u00e2<em>; Septuagint: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dec.html#decqhsetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03c7\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em>. But here, <i>wholehearted<\/i> was a possible nod to the imperfect verb, where <i>perfect<\/i> was their choice when the verb of being was perfect or imperative. The translators of the ESV recognized a difference between human beings (<i>blameless<\/i>) and an animal chosen for sacrifice (<i>perfect<\/i>), but the perfect, imperative and imperfect forms of the verb of being, if they referred to human beings, had no impact on their translation (<i>blameless<\/i>) of forms of the adjective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h8549\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (<i>t\u0101m\u00eem<\/i>). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The word choices the translators of The Complete Jewish Bible made were of particular interest. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They chose <i>perfect<\/i> for two famous individuals: Noah and Abraham. They chose <i>wholehearted<\/i> for Israel addressed with singular pronouns and verbs (which is clear in the KJV translation if one is savvy to the lingo). They also translated the imperfect verb in Deuteronomy 18:13 as if it were an imperative, <i>Be wholehearted<\/i>. It intrigued me because of Jesus&#8217; allusion to Deuteronomy 18:13 in the sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:48 Berean Literal Bible):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You shall be perfect, therefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_ftn10\">as<\/a> your <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_ftn11\">heavenly<\/a> Father is perfect.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I quoted the <a href=\"https:\/\/literalbible.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berean Literal Bible<\/a> because there is really no question that <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#esesqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, <i>You shall be<\/i>, is a 2<sup>nd<\/sup> person plural form of the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eim.html#eimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03bc\u03af<\/a> in the future tense and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#INDICATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicative mood<\/a>. It is a statement of fact and a promise. The only real question is why so many <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/matthew\/5-48.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">English translations<\/a> treat <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#esesqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a> as if it were <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#este2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a 2<sup>nd<\/sup> person plural <a Jesus used the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> person nominative plural pronoun <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/um.html#umeis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> to accentuate that his promise was directly addressed to his hearers on the mountain. \u201cYou shall be, therefore, you perfect,\u201d is arguably an even more literal translation. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle voice<\/a> of the verb of being <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eim.html#eimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03bc\u03af<\/a> deserves some consideration: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cThe Greek middle voice shows the subject acting in his own interest or on his own behalf, or participating in the results of the verbal action. In overly simplistic terms, sometimes the middle form of the verb could be translated as &#8216;the performer of the action actually acting upon himself&#8217; (reflexive action).\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/05\/09\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-5\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The middle voice could mean \u201cYou shall make yourself perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.\u201d I certainly believed that was necessary,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/05\/09\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-5\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> though impossible without the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_help\">Lord&#8217;s help<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/04\/26\/exploration-part-19\/#sdfootnote9sym\">Cooperation<\/a> with the Lord is a possible meaning of the middle voice: \u201cYou shall cooperate with the Lord to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.\u201d But these days I&#8217;m more inclined to understand the middle voice in Matthew 5:48 as one&#8217;s participation in the results of the verbal action: \u201cYou shall be, therefore, you perfect\u201d or \u201cYou shall be, therefore, a perfect you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Though that may be an interesting line of inquiry in some future essay, I want to get back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7521\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> (<i>r\u0101\u1e63\u00e2<\/i>) in this one. So, for now I&#8217;ll satisfy myself with the most readily apparent reason for translating a future indicative verb, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#esesqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, as if it were a present imperative:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Bible is a product intended for sale to a receptive audience\u2014a market. Most of the people I know who might purchase a Bible don&#8217;t believe that <\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You shall be perfect<em> is a true statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/vis-%c3%a0-vis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vis-\u00e0-vis<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2027%3A24-26&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">those who heard Jesus&#8217; that day<\/a> on the mountain. If it is not a true statement, then the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2014%3A5-6&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Truth<\/a> would not have said it, therefore Jesus did not mean what the Greek text says He said. The fact that the Berean Literal Bible is coming to market may indicate a growing interest among English-speaking peoples in what the Greek text of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%2011%3A25-36&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the New Testament actually says<\/a>. <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The last example of a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7521\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" the Lord.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/05\/09\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-5\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek adjective <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/tel.html#teleios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> can mean \u201cmature, full-grown or faultless in beliefs and practice\u201d along with \u201cperfect.\u201d To Greek-speaking peoples an eight-day-old <i>ox or sheep or goat<\/i> would not be \u201cmature, full-grown or faultless in beliefs and practice.\u201d It could, however, be <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/amw.html#amwmon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bc\u03c9\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/amw.html#amwmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bc\u03c9\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, <i>without blemish<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In summary then, Moses promised the old human (Jacob\/Israel) <i>You shall be blameless before the Lord your God<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\"
