{"id":2998,"date":"2013-11-29T03:31:12","date_gmt":"2013-11-28T21:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=2998"},"modified":"2026-03-10T14:35:46","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T19:35:46","slug":"fear-exodus-part-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=2998","title":{"rendered":"Fear &#8211; Exodus, Part 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Now when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand \u2013 when he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. \u00a0When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid<\/i> (<i>y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/i>)<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> <i>to approach him<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Greek word \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9)<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0was chosen for this fear in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Exo&amp;c=34&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_84030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 This word occurs in the phrase \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd \u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> \u03bc\u03ad\u03b3\u03b1\u03bd<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> in Mark\u2019s gospel and was translated, <i>They were overwhelmed by fear<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus and his disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee in a boat.\u00a0 <i>Now a great windstorm developed and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was nearly swamped<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus was asleep in the stern.\u00a0 His disciples <i>woke him up and said to him, \u201cTeacher, don\u2019t you care that we are about to die?\u201d \u00a0So he got up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, \u201cBe quiet! Calm down!\u201d\u00a0 Then the wind stopped, and it was dead calm<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I thought Jesus rebuked them then.\u00a0 <i>\u201cWhy are you cowardly?\u201d<\/i> He said<i> <\/i>according to Mark\u2019s account (which I assume was Peter\u2019s account and Mark served as chronicler, if not his scribe). <i>\u00a0Do you still not have faith?\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In Matthew\u2019s account Jesus\u2019 rebuke\u2014<i>\u201cWhy are you cowardly, you people of little faith?\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014came even before He calmed the storm.\u00a0 (Matthew\/Levi hadn\u2019t been called yet, according to Matthew.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>)\u00a0 Of course, the text doesn\u2019t actually say that Jesus <i>rebuked<\/i> them.<\/p>\n<p>He <i>rebuked <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03c4\u03af\u03bc\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03c9)<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03c9\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><i> the wind<\/i> (the cause<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> of the problem, if you will)<i>, and said <\/i>(\u03b5\u1f36\u03c0\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u1fe5\u03ad\u03c9)<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1fe5\u03ad\u03c9\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> <i>to the sea<\/i> as He <i>said<\/i> (\u03b5\u1f36\u03c0\u03b5\u03bd) <i>to<\/i> his disciples.\u00a0 Matthew recorded what He said (\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9\">\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>)<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> to his disciples, and how He <i>rebuked<\/i> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03c4\u03af\u03bc\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd) <i>the winds and the sea<\/i>.\u00a0 But when I believed that my faith was the <i>work<\/i> that made me worthy of heaven\u2014<i>Why are you cowardly?\u00a0 Do you still not have faith?<\/i> and <i>Why are you cowardly, you people of little faith?<\/i>\u2014stung like rebuke.\u00a0 My opinion began to change, however, after I began to believe that <i>his divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence<\/i>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a> and that credited righteousness<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> was a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/\">functional<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> rather than merely a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/\">formal<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> righteousness.<\/p>\n<p>My original opinion about Jesus\u2019 rebuke was rendered absurd when I began to believe that even faith did not come <i>out of<\/i> or <i>out from<\/i> me: <i>For by grace you are saved through faith <\/i>(\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2)<i>,<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><i> and this is not from yourselves<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03af\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a> \u03bf\u1f50\u03ba<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bf\u1f50\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a> \u1f10\u03be<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03ba\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a> \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a>), <i>it is the gift of God<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I heard the argument that <i>this<\/i> (\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf, literally <i>these<\/i>) cannot refer back to <i>faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2) because \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf \u201cis neuter plural and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/commentaries\/gills-exposition-of-the-bible\/ephesians-2-8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018Faith\u2019<\/a> [\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2] is feminine.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And I certainly tried to live by its consequences: \u201cGod bestows grace on those who faithfully obey His truth (Romans 6:15-18). \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bible.ca\/ef\/expository-ephesians-2-8-10.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Man&#8217;s obedient faith<\/a> does not cancel grace.\u00a0 The fact is that an obedient faith allows initial grace (Acts 2:38) and permits continual grace (1 John 1:7).\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 My faith proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was never up to the task.\u00a0 On the other hand, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/commentaries\/gills-exposition-of-the-bible\/ephesians-2-8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grace is feminine<\/a>\u2026And even Salvation (as a noun) is feminine.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn29\"><sup>[29]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf (literally <i>these<\/i>) refers to none of them or all three of them.<\/p>\n<p>Though now it seems somewhat redundant and unnecessary to say that God\u2019s grace <i>is not from yourselves<\/i>, there was a time when I needed to hear that his grace was <i>not from works, so that no one can boast<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Though now it seems somewhat redundant and unnecessary to say that God\u2019s salvation <i>is not from yourselves<\/i>, there was a time when I needed to hear that his salvation was <i>not from works, so that no one can boast<\/i>.\u00a0 Likewise there was a time when I reached the end of MY faith and needed to hear that even faith<i> is not from yourselves,<\/i> <i>it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is Christ\u2019s faithfulness, not mine, the fruit of his Spirit.<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>And notice how easily these lofty requirements are fulfilled when the faithfulness in question is Christ\u2019s rather than mine: \u201cGod bestows grace on those who faithfully obey His truth.\u00a0 [Christ\u2019s] obedient faith does not cancel grace.\u00a0 The fact is that an obedient faith allows initial grace and permits continual grace.\u201d\u00a0 <i>I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn32\"><sup>[32]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And, <i>the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2), <i>gentleness, and self-control<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn33\"><sup>[33]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not thinking here of the <i>works of the flesh<\/i>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn34\"><sup>[34]<\/sup><\/a> but that desire of the flesh that is most perniciously opposed to the Spirit<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn35\"><sup>[35]<\/sup><\/a> even after its works are largely under his control; namely, the desire to be accepted by God as righteous by my own works on my own terms.\u00a0 <i>But woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites<\/i>, Jesus said to men who pursued that kind of righteousness. \u00a0<i>You keep locking people out of the kingdom of heaven! \u00a0For you neither enter nor permit those trying to enter to go in<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn36\"><sup>[36]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I know Paul didn\u2019t explicitly say that this is a desire of the flesh in his letter to the Galatians, so I may be giving the flesh more credit than it deserves.\u00a0 Perhaps the desire to be right is nothing more than a perversion or short-circuiting of a God-given <i>hunger and thirst for righteousness<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn37\"><sup>[37]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Regardless, the fruit and the glory are God\u2019s, not mine.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek word for this \u201cobedient faith\u201d in the New Testament is \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae.\u00a0 At the beginning and the end of his letter to the Romans Paul went out of his way to make it clear that he did not mean \u201cmy own works by my own righteousness,\u201d in fact, he called it faith\u2019s obedience (Romans 1:5; 16:25-27 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Through him we have received grace and our apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith<i> <\/i><em>(\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1f74\u03bd<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn38\"><sup>[38]<\/sup><\/a> \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2)<\/em> among all the Gentiles on behalf of his name.<\/p>\n<p>Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that had been kept secret for long ages, but now is disclosed, and through the prophetic scriptures has been made known to all the nations, according to the command of the eternal God <em>[\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1fbf<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\"><sup>[39]<\/sup><\/a> \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u1f74\u03bd<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn40\"><sup>[40]<\/sup><\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn41\"><sup>[41]<\/sup><\/a> \u03b1\u1f30\u03c9\u03bd\u03af\u03bf\u03c5<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn42\"><sup>[42]<\/sup><\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn43\"><sup>[43]<\/sup><\/a>]<\/em> to bring about the obedience of faith <em>[\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2\"><sup>[44]<\/sup><\/a> \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1f74\u03bd \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2] \u2013<\/em> to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be glory forever! \u00a0\u00a0Amen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While it is correct to translate \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae <i>obedience<\/i> relative to the Greek language, when Paul used \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae, even alone, relative to the Gospel he did not refer to \u201cmy own works by my own righteousness\u201d any more than his use of the word \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 referred to Zeus, Hera, Apollo or Aphrodite.\u00a0 So I have to ask, how harshly did the Lord Jesus criticize his disciples for not demonstrating the faith He had not yet given them?\u00a0 <i>And look, I am sending you what my Father promised<\/i>, Jesus told his Apostles after his resurrection. \u00a0<i>But stay in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote8sym\">city<\/a> until you have been clothed with power from on high<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn45\"><sup>[45]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 disciples knew, or suspected, that He was the Messiah, or Christ.\u00a0 That\u2019s why they followed Him, according to John\u2019s Gospel account.\u00a0 <i>Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John<\/i> [the Baptist] <i>said and followed Jesus. \u00a0He first found his own brother Simon and told him, \u201cWe have found the Messiah<\/i> (\u039c\u03b5\u03c3\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u039c\u03b5\u03c3\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03c2)!\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u039c\u03b5\u03c3\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03c2\"><sup>[46]<\/sup><\/a> <i>(which is translated Christ<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03c7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>]<i>)<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn47\"><sup>[47]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>Philip found Nathanael and told him, \u201cWe have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about \u2013 Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn48\"><sup>[48]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up to that time a <i>messiah<\/i> (Hebrew: <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_m\u00e2sh\u0131\u0302yach\">m\u00e2sh\u0131\u0302yach<\/a>, <i>maw-shee&#8217;-akh<\/i>) was simply a man anointed by God for a specific purpose.\u00a0 Though incredulous at first that <i>anything good<\/i> could <i>come out of Nazareth<\/i>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn49\"><sup>[49]<\/sup><\/a> when he met Jesus, Nathaniel revealed some of his expectation regarding this particular anointed one at this particular time in Israel\u2019s history, <i>Rabbi, you are the Son of God<\/i> (\u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6)<i>; you are the king of Israel!<\/i><a thirsty<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03c8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03c8\u03ac\u03c9) <i>again, <\/i>Jesus, pointing at a well, told a Samaritan woman. \u00a0<i>But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03c8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03c8\u03ac\u03c9) <i>again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn88\"><sup>[88]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So the way that righteousness, the will of God, is achieved in heaven is through free access to God\u2019s Holy Spirit, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/03\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-4\/\">not an occasional spurt<\/a> of righteousness, but a spring or fountain <i>springing up to eternal life<\/i>, which is not so much a timeless time or place as an eternal way of life.\u00a0 And so it is on earth:\u00a0<i>may your will be done<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03b7\u03b8\u03ae\u03c4\u03c9, a form of \u03b3\u03af\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, literally <i>become<\/i>)<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b3\u03af\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\"><sup>[89]<\/sup><\/a> <i>on <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#sdfootnote2sym\">earth<\/a> as it is in heaven<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn90\"><sup>[90]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And so it was with our Lord and Savior: <i>I will grant the one who conquers<\/i> (\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9) <i>permission to sit with me on my throne, just as I too conquered<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd\u03af\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1, a form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9) <i>and sat down with my Father on his throne<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn91\"><sup>[91]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For <i>everyone who has been fathered by God conquers<\/i> (\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u1fb7, a form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9) <i>the world.\u00a0 This is the conquering power that has conquered<\/i> (\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae\u03c3\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1, a form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9) <i>the world: our faith. \u00a0Now who is the person who has conquered<\/i> (\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9) <i>the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn92\"><sup>[92]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides in him and he in God. \u00a0And we have come to know and to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/27\/son-of-god-1-john-part-3\/\">believe the love<\/a><\/i> [the fruit of his Spirit] <i>that God has in us. \u00a0God is love, and the one who resides in love resides in God, and God <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/22\/antichrist-part-2\/#sdfootnote6sym\">resides<\/a> in him <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/04\/romans-part-7\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>].<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn93\"><sup>[93]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With that in mind I want to reconsider the story of Jesus calming the wind and the waves.\u00a0 I\u2019ll use my imagination along with a psalm to get into the scene a little deeper.\u00a0 When <i>a great windstorm developed and the waves<\/i> first began <i>breaking into the boat<\/i>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn94\"><sup>[94]<\/sup><\/a> though the other disciples may have been immediately afraid, I imagine Peter, Andrew, James and John took it in stride, for they were fishermen (Psalm 107:23-25 NET).<i><\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some traveled on the sea in ships, and carried cargo over the vast waters. \u00a0They witnessed the acts of the Lord, his amazing feats on the deep water. \u00a0He gave the order for a windstorm, and it stirred up the waves of the sea.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Peter gave orders to man the sail, ropes or oars, I imagine he smiled to himself that Jesus could sleep through it all.\u00a0 Obviously, the Messiah wasn\u2019t worried that He might drown in a storm on the Sea of Galilee (Psalm 107:26a NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/21\/pauls-ot-quotes-romans-105-8\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They reached up to the sky, then dropped into the depths.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s an apt description of a boat riding out a storm fairly successfully.\u00a0 But in the midst of an inland lake, the longer the wind blows, the more confused the waves become as they bounce back from every shore.\u00a0 In the dark with no clue where the next wave would come from, it became almost impossible to head into the waves, <i>so that the boat was nearly swamped<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn95\"><sup>[95]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As the level of the water rose inside the boat, I imagine Peter\u2019s amusement gave way to dismay, that the Messiah could sleep through it all (Psalm 107:26b-28a NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The sailors\u2019 strength left them because the danger was so great <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/21\/pauls-ot-quotes-romans-105-8\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0They swayed and staggered like a drunk, and all their skill proved ineffective. \u00a0They cried out to the Lord in their distress\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>Teacher, don\u2019t you care that we are about to die?<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn96\"><sup>[96]<\/sup><\/a> Peter roused Jesus from his slumber.\u00a0 I imagine that it was Peter, telling on himself through Mark (Psalm 107:28b, 29 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026he delivered them from their troubles. \u00a0He calmed the storm, and the waves grew silent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Granted, there are more appropriate ways to cry out to the Lord at the end of one\u2019s own faith.\u00a0 I\u2019ve certainly said worse than\u2014<i>Teacher, don\u2019t you care that we are about to die?<\/i>\u2014but the Lord\u2019s love <i>is not easily angered or resentful<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn97\"><sup>[97]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And with time in, living at the edge of my faith, his peace and patience work out more appropriate prayers for salvation in me.\u00a0 My point in all this is that Jesus\u00a0was not concerned with\u00a0the fear his disciples\u00a0felt during the storm.\u00a0 They responded more or less appropriately to that fear according to the Scripture.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_pet\"><\/a>Hear how the words\u2014<i>Why are you cowardly?\u00a0 Do you still not have faith?<\/i>\u2014sound, if they were spoken quietly with a smile and a wink as Jesus headed back to bed, rather than an imperious scowl.\u00a0 Granted, the order of events in Matthew\u2019s Gospel account lends more credence to that imperious scowl, but then in Matthew the phrase <i>you people of little faith<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn98\"><sup>[98]<\/sup><\/a> is one word, \u1f40\u03bb\u03b9\u03b3\u03cc\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9 (a form of \u1f40\u03bb\u03b9\u03b3\u03cc\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f40\u03bb\u03b9\u03b3\u03cc\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2\"><sup>[99]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Knowing that, it sounds more like a pet name or a term of endearment than a curse, or even a rebuke.<\/p>\n<p>Where the disciples were in danger of diverging from Scripture was after Jesus calmed the storm, after He revealed that this particular Messiah was in fact Yahweh (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Psalms+65:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psalms 65:5-7<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Psalms+89:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">89:8, 9<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Psalms+93:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">93:3, 4 NET<\/a>), who spoke to the wind and the waves and, <i>Even the wind and sea obey him!<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn100\"><sup>[100]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>The sailors<\/i> [in the psalm] <i>rejoiced because the waves grew quiet, and he led them to the harbor they desired<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn101\"><sup>[101]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus disciples <i>were overwhelmed by fear<\/i> (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd \u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd \u03bc\u03ad\u03b3\u03b1\u03bd).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn102\"><sup>[102]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, when<i> Aaron and all the Israelites<\/i>\u2026<i>were afraid<\/i> (Septuagint, \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9) <i>to approach <\/i>[Moses] because <i>the skin of his face shone<\/i>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn103\"><sup>[103]<\/sup><\/a> they were not frightened by a strange sight.\u00a0 They had seen stranger sights.\u00a0 They were frightened by the implication of Moses\u2019 shining face, that Moses was becoming like Yahweh.\u00a0 The fear of becoming like God, if it is not faced, could keep one from conquering, from inheriting, and from hearing the Lord say, <i>I will be his God and he will be my son<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn104\"><sup>[104]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So that fear fully deserves its place first in the list of the damned.\u00a0 Aaron and all the Israelites faced that fear, however, and drew near to Moses anyway.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 Apostles, except for Judas Iscariot, faced it and overcame by faith in Him, <i>because everyone who has been fathered by God conquers<\/i> <i>the world.<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/29\/fear-exodus-part-9\/#_ftn105\"><sup>[105]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a
