Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this thread I want to begin to consider the meaning of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cr.html#cristianos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>, <em>Christian<\/em>, forms of which occur only <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/5546.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three times<\/a> in the New Testament. The first occurrence of the plural form <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cr.html#cristianous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03cd\u03c2<\/a> corresponds to the first time <em>the disciples<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/maq.html#maqhtas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u1f70\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/maq.html#maqhths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>) were <em>called Christians<\/em> (Acts 11:19-26 Berean Literal Bible):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Therefore, indeed, those having been scattered by the tribulation having taken place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts%206%3A8-8%3A3&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over Stephen<\/a> passed through to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts%2010:1-11:18&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to Jews only<\/a>. But some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote16sym\">having come<\/a> into Antioch, were speaking <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote17sym\">also<\/a> to the Hellenists, proclaiming the gospel\u2014the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote19sym\">having believed<\/a>, turned to the Lord <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now the report was heard in the ears of the church <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote5sym\">being in<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote6sym\">Jerusalem<\/a> concerning them, and they sent forth Barnabas to go as far as Antioch <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>\u2014who, having come and having seen the grace <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote21sym\">of God<\/a>, rejoiced and was exhorting all to abide in the Lord with resolute purpose of heart <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table10\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great multitude was added to the Lord.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote23sym\">he<\/a> went out to Tarsus to seek Saul, and having found <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote24sym\">him<\/a>, he brought <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote25sym\">him<\/a> to Antioch. And it came to pass that they also gathered together a whole year <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote27sym\">in<\/a> the church and taught a great multitude. And in Antioch the disciples were first<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/em> called Christians <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Christian<\/em> is another name for a disciple (Acts 11:25, 26a Berean Literal Bible):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote23sym\">Barnabas<\/a>]<\/em> went out to Tarsus to seek Saul, and having found <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote24sym\">him<\/a>, he brought <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote25sym\">him<\/a> to Antioch. And it came to pass that they <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote26sym\">also<\/a> gathered together a whole year <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote27sym\">in<\/a> the church and taught a great multitude <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A strictly literal reading of this passage alone leads one to the objectively true but spiritually erroneous conclusion that those first called <em>Christians<\/em> were <em>disciples<\/em> of Barnabas and Saul (also known as Paul). But Paul assured us elsewhere that what is objectively true in Acts 11:25-26a is not the truth spiritually (2 Corinthians 4:5 Berean Literal Bible):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants on account of Jesus.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the old human (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#ton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pal.html#palaion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anq.html#anqrwpon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esv.org\/John+3:6%E2%80%937;John+6:63\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">born only of the flesh of Adam<\/a>, we are taught to value what is objectively true, what we see with our eyes: \u201cLook both ways before you step out into the street; that bus can kill you.\u201d Those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%203:6&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">born of the Spirit<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%203%3A7&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">born again<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John.3.7&amp;version=NET\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">born from above<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%201%3A11-13&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by the will of God<\/a> pay attention to the spiritual truth as well, which often supersedes what is objectively true: <i>For we walk by faith, not by sight<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> <i>For the things being seen are temporary, but the things not being seen are eternal<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It seems important for knowing God and ourselves and for understanding the Scriptures to belabor this point a bit more. Paul wrote (1 Corinthians 1:10-17; 3:3b-9 Berean Literal Bible):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now I exhort you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you may speak the same thing and there may be no divisions among you, but you may be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it was revealed to me concerning you, my brothers, by those of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, \u201cI am indeed of Paul,\u201d and \u201cI of Apollos,\u201d and \u201cI of Cephas,\u201d and \u201cI of Christ.\u201d<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> into my name. Now also I baptized the household of Stephanas; as to the rest, I do not know if I baptized any other. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to preach the gospel, not in wisdom of word, so that the cross of the Christ should not be made void&#8230;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For where jealousy and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn22\">strife<\/a> are among you, are you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn23\">not<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn24\">fleshly<\/a> and walking according to man? For when one may say, \u201cI am indeed of Paul,\u201d and another, \u201cI of Apollos,\u201d are you not men?<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn25\">Who<\/a> then is Apollos? And <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn26\">who<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn27\">Paul<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn28\">Servants<\/a> through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave to each. I planted, Apollos watered, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn29\">but<\/a> God was giving growth <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_Table10\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. So neither the one planting nor the one watering is anything <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#estin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u1f77\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ti.html#ti2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>; or \u201cis someone\u201d or \u201cis anyone\u201d)<\/em>, but only God, the One giving growth. Now the one planting and the one watering are one, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God\u2019s fellow workers; you are God\u2019s field, God\u2019s building.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ultimately, <i>Christians<\/i> are disciples of Christ Jesus (Matthew 28:16-20 Berean Literal Bible):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And the eleven disciples went into Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus assigned them. And having seen Him, they worshiped;<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/em> but some doubted.<br \/>\nAnd having come near, Jesus spoke to them, saying, \u201cAll authority in heaven and on <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn25\">the<\/a> earth was given to Me <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/03\/09\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-11\/#sdfootnote4sym\">Therefore<\/a>, having gone, disciple all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/04\/26\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-7\/#_Table21\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, teaching them to observe all things, as much as I commanded <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ene.html#eneteilamhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u1f71\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entellw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>you. And behold, I am with you all the days, until the consummation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn26\">age<\/a>\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_Table6\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So while it is objectively true that <em>the disciples<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/maq.html#maqhtas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u1f70\u03c2<\/a>) who <em>were first called Christians<\/em> at Antioch were disciples of Barnabas and Saul, we can assume that the content Barnabas and Saul <em>taught<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/did.html#didaxai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u1f71\u03be\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/did.html#didaskw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) <em>a great multitude<\/em> was related to Jesus&#8217; command: <em>teaching<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/did.html#didaskontes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u1f71\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a present participle of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/did.html#didaskw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) <em>them to observe<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, an infinitive form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Corinthians%202%3A1-2&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all things<\/a>, as much as I commanded you<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> We can assume that their goal was to <em>disciple<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/maq.html#maqhteusate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, an imperative form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/maq.html#maqhteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>all the nations<\/em> to God the Father through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. <em>Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ<\/em>, Paul wrote, <em>as though God is appealing through us. The translations <i>go<\/i> (NET) and <i>go ye<\/i> (KJV) sound more like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#IMPERATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imperative<\/a> forms in the present tense. But Jesus didn&#8217;t expect his disciples to go immediately to <em>disciple all the nations<\/em> (Acts 1:4b, 5 Berean Literal Bible):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">He instructed <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parh.html#parhggeile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f75\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parag.html#paraggellw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father: \u201cThat which you heard of Me; for John indeed baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days after these.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jesus, before his crucifixion, had described the Holy Spirit to them as <i>the Spirit of truth, whom the world is not able to receive, because it does not see Him, nor does it know <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn15\">Him<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn16\">But<\/a> you know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> And many examples of the behavior of Jesus&#8217; disciples in the four Gospel accounts and Acts provide a beautiful contrast of the difference between <i>with you<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/par.html#par\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1fbf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/um.html#umin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>) and <i>in you<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/en.html#en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/um.html#umin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And in the arriving of the day of Pentecost, they were <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/the-holy-spirit-is-given\/#sdfootnote1sym\">all<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/the-holy-spirit-is-given\/#sdfootnote2sym\">together<\/a> at the same place <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/the-holy-spirit-is-given\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. And suddenly a sound like a violent rushing of wind came out of heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them dividing tongues as of fire, and they sat <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/the-holy-spirit-is-given\/#sdfootnote3sym\">upon<\/a> each one of them. And they were <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/the-holy-spirit-is-given\/#sdfootnote4sym\">all<\/a> filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit was giving to them to declare forth <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/the-holy-spirit-is-given\/#_Table2\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul&#8217;s first question, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/05\/20\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-5\/#sdfootnote18sym\">having found<\/a> certain disciples<\/i> in Ephesus, was <i>\u201cDid you receive the Holy Spirit, having believed?\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> Barnabas was described as <i>a good<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agaq.html#agaqos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>) <i>man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> Paul explained that <i>the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agaq.html#agaqwsunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03c9\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>)<i>, faithfulness<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn4\">gentleness<\/a>, self-control<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-6\/#_Table29\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> Though the <i>certain disciples,<\/i> Paul encountered in Ephesus proved to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts%2019%3A1-7&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disciples of John the Baptist<\/a> rather than disciples of Christ,\u00a0<a id=\"_receive_actively\"><\/a><i>\u201cDid you receive the Holy Spirit, having believed?\u201d<\/i> remains the relevant question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Did you receive<\/i> sounds rather passive in contemporary American English. The Greek verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ela.html#elabete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u1f71\u03b2\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> is actually a 2nd person plural form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/la.html#lambanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">active voice<\/a>: \u201cto take, take hold of, grasp, seize; to take away, remove; to take by violence, seize, carry off as plunder; to pick up, choose; to seize (by fever, illness); to take advantage of; to fetch; to cause to come or go; to carry; to catch (someone), overtake, come upon; to capture, conquer, take control of, overpower; to find out, detect, catch (in the act); to take (as a partner); to take (a woman) in marriage; to assume possession of, avail oneself of; to consider and assess; to initiate (an action); to pronounce, utter; to become pregnant, conceive; to receive; to seize with the mind, understand, apprehend, comprehend; to undertake (an action); to accept, collect (i.e., collect taxes, tithes, a share); to choose, select; to get, gain, win, attain, obtain, procure (through purchase); to receive (in marriage); to receive (punishment, suffering); to make one&#8217;s own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This was admittedly quite surprising. I can rationalize it with the question, \u201cDo you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?\u201d Here, <i>take<\/i> would be equivalent to <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ela.html#elabete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u1f71\u03b2\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, or more precisely the singular <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ela.html#elabes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>. I chose the question addressed to the bride as an example because I am clearly the <i>weaker vessel<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> relative to the Holy Spirit, though probably not like \u201cfine China\u201d as I have heard a preacher describe the <i>weaker vessel<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/asq.html#asqenesterw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u1ff3<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sk.html#skeuei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I hadn&#8217;t thought of \u201ctaking\u201d the Holy Spirit as an active voice verb. It felt more like a passive acquiescence in the face of my persistent failure to live righteously by my own efforts. And it causes me to rethink my whole life: Has He been mine since I said a sinner&#8217;s prayer at five-years-old? Have I refused to receive Him in any active way until I prayed \u201cIf you&#8217;re really out there, I really want to know you\u201d in my early twenties? My own perception is that since that prayer He has steadily and patiently (and more and more successfully) wrestled my <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians%204%3A20-24&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">old self<\/a><\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#ton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pal.html#palaion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anq.html#anqrwpon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>; \u201cthe old human\u201d) for control of my daily life. But <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/01\/exploration-part-20\/#_EXP20\">I&#8217;m tougher now<\/a>, too. Was He gentler with a five- or ten- or fifteen-year-old than I was willing or able to perceive as real, as anything other than my own imagination?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the other hand, if He had asserted the kind of control I perceive now when I was a five- or fifteen- or even a twenty-five-year-old, would I know Him at all? Or would I simply mistake Him for ME? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After I had copied and pasted the definition of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/la.html#lambanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a> into this essay, I texted my Pastor: \u201cI&#8217;m 72.5 years old and this is the first time I looked up &#8216;Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?&#8217; and discovered that the Greek verb translated &#8216;you receive&#8217; is in the active voice: &#8216;to seize.&#8217;\u201d Then I left to meet a friend in the city. On the drive I called my brother with the same lament. We talked about it awhile. His parting words were, \u201cI heard that a long time ago, but I forgot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It helped to normalize my own experience. To receive the Holy Spirit doesn&#8217;t seem all that active a verb once He is my love, my joy, my peace, my patience, my kindness, my goodness, my faithfulness, my gentleness and my self-control. The verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ela.html#elabete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u1f71\u03b2\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> is in the 2nd aorist tense:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The aorist is said to be &#8220;simple occurrence&#8221; or &#8220;summary occurrence&#8221;, without regard for the amount of time taken to accomplish the action. This tense is also often referred to as the &#8216;punctiliar&#8217; tense. &#8216;Punctiliar&#8217; in this sense means &#8216;viewed as a single, collective whole,&#8217; a &#8220;one-point-in-time&#8221; action, although it may actually take place over a period of time. In the indicative mood the aorist tense denotes action that occurred in the past time, often translated like the English simple past tense.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/06\/26\/who-is-a-christian-part-1\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How often does a woman consider her wedding vow when her marriage is going well? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An interesting moment in the movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Six_Days,_Seven_Nights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Six Days, Seven Nights<\/a>\u201d comes to mind. It&#8217;s a story about two strangers on a deserted island after a plane crash. Quinn (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harrison_Ford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harrison Ford<\/a>), the pilot, and his passenger, Robin (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anne_Heche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anne Heche<\/a>), \u201ca New York fashion magazine editor,\u201d share little in common but their growing enmity for one another. Still, their situation and dependence on one another blossoms into sexual attraction, an attraction they resist since she is engaged to another man. Though she has slept in the damaged plane and he on the beach every other night since they crashed, as they bed down together for the night (on the run from pirates who know they have witnessed a murder), Robin nestles into Quinn&#8217;s arms, saying, \u201cThis feels good\u2014and safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ve wondered over the years about that line. Does Robin feel \u201csafe\u201d because she is absolutely convinced that Quinn is so self-controlled he won&#8217;t \u201ctake\u201d her during the night? Or does she feel safe because the thought of Quinn taking her during the night is no longer so contrary to her own desire. In other words, she has already <i>received<\/i> him (in the active voice) in her heart and in her mind. The verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ela.html#elabete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u1f71\u03b2\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> is in the indicative mood (which in \u201cthe aorist tense denotes action that occurred in the past time\u201d): \u201cIf you&#8217;re really out there, I really want to know you,\u201d I had prayed, receiving Him without reservation or condition other than his own existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I got back from the city, I had a text response to my lament over <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ela.html#elabete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u1f71\u03b2\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> from my Pastor: \u201cThat&#8217;s interesting. I&#8217;m looking a lot [at] that word in Hebrew this week.\u201d He was preparing a sermon on Genesis 34.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the women of the land <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/05\/fear-genesis-part-4\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he seized her and lay with her and humiliated her <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/05\/fear-genesis-part-4\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. And his soul was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob.
