Look, the Lord is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants\u2026The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked.\u00a0 For the Lord has decreed this judgment.[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As I understand the words this would be condemnation<\/i> rather than judgment<\/i>.\u00a0 This is an adverse sentence.\u00a0 The time for judgment has passed and the time of punishment has begun.\u00a0 There is no attempt here to distinguish, or make distinctions, or judge<\/i>; for, Everyone will suffer \u2013 the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor<\/i>.[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So, I thought, if there was a strong connection between the Hebrew word translated judgment<\/i> in Isaiah 24:3 and the Greek word \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, I would have some justification for translating \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 condemnation<\/i> in John 5:28 and 29 where the ones who have done what is evil <\/i>hear Jesus\u2019 voice and come out of their tombs to the resurrection resulting in condemnation<\/a><\/i> (\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2).[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But the Hebrew word d\u00e2b\u00e2r<\/i>[4]<\/sup><\/a> is the much more neutral word<\/i>.\u00a0 The translators acknowledged that in a footnote<\/a>: \u201cHeb <\/i>\u2018for the Lord has spoken this word.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 The translators of the Septuagint<\/a> simply used this<\/i>, \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u1f10\u03bb\u03ac\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd \u03c4\u03b1\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b1 (\u201cthe Lord has spoken this\u201d).<\/p>\n

If I intend to walk away from my na\u00efve assumption that \u201cmore bearable<\/a><\/i> meant less condemned, a more bearable place in hell, less heat, less torture or something,\u201d I need to come to some conclusion about what Jesus meant by \u1f10\u03bd \u1f21\u03bc\u03ad\u03c1\u1fb3 \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, translated on the day of judgment<\/i>.[5]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I tell you<\/i>, Jesus said, that on the day of judgment<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd \u1f21\u03bc\u03ad\u03c1\u1fb3 \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2), people will give an account<\/i> (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2)[6]<\/sup><\/a> for every worthless word<\/i> (\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd[7]<\/sup><\/a> \u03c1\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u1f00\u03c1\u03b3\u1f78\u03bd[9]<\/sup><\/a>) they speak<\/i> (\u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).[10]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I assume here that every worthless word<\/i> they speak <\/i>referred back to the Pharisees\u2019 assertion that Jesus does not cast out demons except by the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of demons!<\/i>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For Jesus said (Matthew 12:30-32 NET):<\/p>\n

Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. \u00a0For this reason I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Whoever speaks a word (\u03b5\u1f34\u03c0\u1fc3[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/em>\u00a0\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd)<\/em> against (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70)[13]<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the Son of Man will be forgiven. \u00a0But whoever speaks against (\u03b5\u1f34\u03c0\u1fc3 \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70)<\/em> the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Whoever speaks a word against<\/i> (\u03b5\u1f34\u03c0\u1fc3 \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70) the Son of Man<\/i>, seems to refer to, people will give an account<\/i> (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2) for every worthless word<\/i> (\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd \u03c1\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1 \u1f00\u03c1\u03b3\u1f78\u03bd) they speak<\/i> (\u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd).\u00a0 The worthless <\/i>(or, lazy<\/i>) word<\/i> spoken against (\u03b5\u1f34\u03c0\u1fc3 \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70) Jesus is an ill-considered account<\/i> (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2) of Jesus, contrary to his own; for instance, He does not cast out demons except by the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of demons!<\/i>\u00a0 This can be forgiven, but be careful, Jesus warned, if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has already overtaken you<\/i>,[14]<\/sup><\/a> and whoever speaks against<\/i> (\u03b5\u1f34\u03c0\u1fc3 \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70) the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come<\/i>.<\/p>\n

I think the implication here is that one has used this account<\/i>, this word against the Son of Man<\/i>, as justification for disregarding Him.\u00a0 To that one who comes into judgment, who is called upon on the day of judgment to give an account<\/i> for every worthless word<\/i> he has spoken against the Son of Man, Jesus said, For by your words<\/i> (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2) you will be justified<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9),[15]<\/sup><\/a> and by your words<\/i> (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2) you will be condemned<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>).[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Translating \u1f10\u03ba \u03b3\u1f70\u03c1 \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5 For by your words<\/i> makes it seem as if Jesus meant the account<\/i> already given in the past (\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd \u03c1\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1 \u1f00\u03c1\u03b3\u1f78\u03bd, translated every worthless word<\/i>), rather than the account<\/i> (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2) this person has been called upon to give in that present moment on the day of judgment<\/i>, as if that account<\/i> is a mere formality.\u00a0 But to translate \u1f10\u03ba \u03b3\u1f70\u03c1 \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5 For by your <\/i>[account] you will be justified<\/i>, and by your <\/i>[account] you will be condemned<\/i>, would contradict the teaching<\/a> of our religion that one\u2019s eternal fate is determined long before any account can be given on the day of judgment.\u00a0 And granted, if one attempts to justify himself with more worthless words<\/i>, the outcome of that judgment is foreordained, and that account<\/i> will be little more than a mere formality.<\/p>\n

The only account<\/i> that matters at that moment (or this one, for that matter) is, God, be merciful<\/i> (\u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b9, a form of \u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)[17]<\/sup><\/a> to me, sinner that I am!<\/i>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He had to be made like his brothers and sisters in every respect<\/i>, the writer of Hebrews said of Jesus, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make atonement<\/i> (\u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) for the sins of the people<\/i>.[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And of the one who prayed\u2014God, be merciful<\/i> to me, sinner that I am<\/i>\u2014 Jesus said, I tell you that this man went down to his home justified<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b5\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9),[20]<\/sup><\/a> because the mercy<\/i> (\u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b9, a form of \u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) the self-professed sinner requested was nothing less than the atonement<\/i> (\u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f31\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) Jesus was sent to make\u2026for the sins of the people<\/i>.<\/p>\n

If I am safe assuming that \u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1fc7 \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9 [a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2], translated at the judgment<\/i>, is equivalent to \u1f10\u03bd \u1f21\u03bc\u03ad\u03c1\u1fb3 \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 [a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2], translated on the day of judgment<\/i>, than I can glean something of the anachronism of that time.\u00a0 The people of Nineveh<\/i>, Jesus said, will stand up at the judgment<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1fc7 \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9) with this generation and<\/i> condemn<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)[21]<\/sup><\/a> it, because they repented when Jonah preached to them \u2013 and now, something greater than Jonah is here!<\/i>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here are two peoples from different times and places together in the same time and place.\u00a0 The queen of the South<\/i>, Jesus continued, will rise up at the judgment<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1fc7 \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9) with this generation and condemn<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon \u2013 and now, something greater than Solomon is here!<\/i>[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I think it\u2019s worth mentioning that neither the people of Ninevah nor the Queen of the South have the authority to condemn the people of Israel to hell.\u00a0 Nor do I think that was Jesus\u2019 point.\u00a0 The discourse ends with Jesus\u2019 saying, whoever does <\/i>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9)[24]<\/sup><\/a> the will <\/i>(\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1)[25]<\/sup><\/a> of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother<\/i>.[26]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When asked, \u201cWhat must we do <\/i>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9) to accomplish the deeds God requires <\/i>(\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1 \u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1\u03b6\u03ce\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1 \u03c4\u1f70 \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6; literally, \u201cthat we work God\u2019s works\u201d)?\u201d\u00a0 Jesus replied, \u201cThis is the deed God requires <\/i>(\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd \u03c4\u1f78 \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6; literally, \u201cthis is God\u2019s work\u201d) \u2013 to believe in the one whom he sent.\u201d<\/i>[27]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u201cFor this is the will <\/i>(\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1) of my Father \u2013 for everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.\u201d<\/i>[28]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 John related this faith to the love that is the fulfillment of the law and confidence in the day of judgment<\/i> (1 John 4:15-19 NET).<\/p>\n

If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides in him and he in God. \u00a0And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has in us.\u00a0 God is love, and the one who resides in love resides in God, and God resides<\/a> in him [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0By this love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment (\u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1fc7 \u1f21\u03bc\u03ad\u03c1\u1fb3 \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2 \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2)<\/em>, because just as Jesus is, so also are we in this world. \u00a0There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.\u00a0 The one who fears punishment has not been perfected in love. \u00a0We love because he loved us first.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And if anyone will not welcome you or listen to your message<\/i>,[29]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus told his disciples as He sent them to the lost sheep of the house of Israel<\/i>\u2026[30]<\/sup><\/a> it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd \u1f21\u03bc\u03ad\u03c1\u1fb3 \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2) than for that town!<\/i>[31]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here I see a potential meaning for more bearable<\/i>. \u00a0Perhaps fewer people will rise up to condemn the wicked inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah than will rise up to speak their worthless words against those who saw the sick healed, the dead raised, and lepers cleansed but rejected the message, The kingdom of heaven is near!<\/i>[32]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
