Jephthah was somewhat unique among the Judges.\u00a0 His leadership style hearkened back to someone more like Moses than the other Judges up to his time (compare Ehud<\/a>,1<\/sup><\/a> for instance).\u00a0 Though I wouldn\u2019t expect a marauding leader of lawless men<\/a>, the exiled son of a professional (or eager amateur) devotee of one of the Baals or Ashtars<\/a>, to be an avid student of the five books of Moses (Genesis through Deuteronomy), Jephthah did not rush into battle with the king of the Ammonites (Judges 11:12, 13 NET).<\/p>\n

Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king, saying, \u201cWhy have you come against me to attack my land?\u201d \u00a0The Ammonite king said to Jephthah\u2019s messengers, \u201cBecause Israel stole my land when they came up from Egypt \u2013 from the Arnon River in the south to the Jabbok River in the north, and as far west as the Jordan.\u00a0 Now return it peaceably!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Perhaps Jephthah\u2019s ancestry and personal history made him more careful than others to imitate Moses of old.\u00a0 Whether he knew the history himself or enlisted priests or prophets to help him, Jephthah\u2019s response to the Ammonite king was a relatively detailed Bible2<\/sup><\/a> study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Jephthah sent messengers back to the Ammonite king and said to him, \u201cThis is what Jephthah says, \u2018Israel did not steal the land of Moab and the land of the Ammonites.<\/p>\n

Israel sent the same request to the king of Moab, but he was unwilling to cooperate.\u00a0 So Israel stayed at Kadesh. \u00a0Then Israel went through the desert and bypassed the land of Edom and the land of Moab.\u00a0 They traveled east of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon River; they did not go through Moabite territory (the Arnon was Moab\u2019s border).<\/p>\n

Israel sent messengers to King Sihon, the Amorite king who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, \u201cPlease allow us to pass through your land to our land.\u201d \u00a0But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory.\u00a0 He assembled his whole army, camped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel. \u00a0The Lord God of Israel handed Sihon and his whole army over to Israel and they defeated them.\u00a0 Israel took all the land of the Amorites who lived in that land. \u00a0They took all the Amorite territory from the Arnon River on the south to the Jabbok River on the north, from the desert in the east to the Jordan in the west.\u00a0 Since the Lord God of Israel has driven out the Amorites before his people Israel, do you think you can just take it from them? \u00a0You have the right to take what Chemosh your god gives you, but we will take the land of all whom the Lord our God has driven out before us.<\/p>\n

Did he dare to fight with them? \u00a0Israel has been living in Heshbon and its nearby towns, in Aroer and its nearby towns, and in all the cities along the Arnon for three hundred years!\u00a0 Why did you not reclaim them during that time?<\/p>\n

May the Lord (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>), the Judge (\u0161\u0101p\u0304a\u1e6d<\/em>, \u05d4\u05e9\u05e4\u05d8<\/a>), judge (\u0161\u0101p\u0304a\u1e6d<\/em>, \u05d9\u05e9\u05e4\u05d8<\/a>) this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites!\u2019\u201d\u00a0 But the Ammonite king disregarded the message sent by Jephthah.<\/p>\n

<\/a>The next part of Jephthah\u2019s story was introduced by the statement, The Lord\u2019s spirit<\/a> empowered Jephthah<\/em>.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And by the Lord\u2019s spirit, Jephthah approached the Ammonites to fight with them, and the Lord handed them over to him. \u00a0He defeated them from Aroer all the way to Minnith \u2013 twenty cities in all, even as far as Abel Keramim! He wiped them out!\u00a0 The Israelites humiliated the Ammonites<\/em>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But after the Lord\u2019s spirit empowered him, and before he defeated the Ammonites, on the way to battle, probably in the hearing of his officers and men (Judges 11:30, 31 NET):<\/p>\n

Jephthah made (<\/em>n\u0101\u1e0far, \u05d5\u05d9\u05d3\u05e8<\/a>) <\/em>a vow (<\/em>ne\u1e0fer, \u05e0\u05d3\u05e8<\/a>) <\/em>to the Lord, saying, \u201cIf you really do hand the Ammonites over to me [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, then whoever is the first to come through the doors of my house to meet me when I return safely from fighting the Ammonites \u2013 he will belong to the Lord and I will offer him up as a burnt sacrifice [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Whether he studied the scroll himself or with the aid of priests or Levites the information Jephthah shared with the Ammonite king came largely from Numbers.\u00a0 In Numbers 30:1, 2 (NET), Moses told the leaders of the tribes concerning the Israelites, \u201cThis is what the Lord has commanded: \u00a0If a man makes<\/em> (n\u0101\u1e0far<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d3\u05e8<\/a>) a vow<\/em> (ne\u1e0fer<\/em>, \u05e0\u05d3\u05e8<\/a>) to the Lord or takes<\/em> (\u0161\u0101\u1e07a\u02bf<\/em>, \u05d4\u05e9\u05d1\u05e2<\/a>) an oath<\/em> (\u0161\u1d4a\u1e07\u00fb\u02bf\u00e2<\/em>, \u05e9\u05d1\u05e2\u05d4<\/a>) of binding obligation on himself, he must not break <\/em>(\u1e25\u0101lal<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d7\u05dc<\/a>) his word, but must do whatever <\/em>(k\u014dl<\/em>, \u05db\u05db\u05dc<\/a>) he has promised <\/em>(y\u0101\u1e63\u0101’<\/em> \u05d4\u05d9\u05e6\u05d0<\/a>, p\u00ea<\/em> \u05de\u05e4\u05d9\u05d5<\/a>) [Table<\/a>].<\/p>\n

The plot thickens (Judges 11:34, 35 NET):<\/p>\n

When Jephthah came home to Mizpah, there was his daughter hurrying out to meet him, dancing to the rhythm of tambourines.\u00a0 She was his only child; except for her he had no son or daughter. \u00a0When he saw her, he ripped his clothes and said, \u201cOh no!\u00a0 My daughter!\u00a0 You have completely ruined me!\u00a0 You have brought me disaster!\u00a0 I made (<\/em>p\u0101\u1e63\u00e2, \u05e4\u05e6\u05d9\u05ea\u05d9<\/a>) <\/em>an oath (<\/em>p\u00ea, \u05e4\u05d9<\/a>)<\/em> to the Lord, and I cannot break (<\/em>\u0161\u00fb\u1e07, \u05dc\u05e9\u05d5\u05d1<\/a>) <\/em>it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though it is a tricky thing to do it might be possible to infer a few things about this marauding leader of lawless men<\/a>, the exiled son of a professional (or eager amateur) devotee of one of the Baals or Ashtars<\/a>, as a father by his daughter\u2019s response. \u00a0\u201cMy father, since you made<\/em> (p\u0101\u1e63\u00e2<\/em>, \u05e4\u05e6\u05d9\u05ea\u05d4<\/a>) an oath<\/em> (p\u00ea<\/em>, \u05e4\u05d9\u05da<\/a>) to the Lord, do to me as you promised <\/em>(‘\u0103\u0161er<\/em>, \u05db\u05d0\u05e9\u05e8<\/a>; y\u0101\u1e63\u0101’<\/em>, \u05d9\u05e6\u05d0<\/a>; p\u00ea<\/em>, \u05de\u05e4\u05d9\u05da<\/a>; literally: \u201cwhatever went out from your mouth\u201d). \u00a0After all, the Lord vindicated you before your enemies, the Ammonites.\u201d<\/em>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And it was not only before the Ammonites that Jephthah was vindicated.<\/p>\n

The story concluded (Judges 11:37-40 NET):<\/p>\n

She then said to her father, \u201cPlease grant me this one wish.\u00a0 For two months allow me to walk through the hills with my friends and mourn my virginity.\u201d \u00a0He said, \u201cYou may go.\u201d\u00a0 He permitted her to leave for two months.\u00a0 She went with her friends and mourned her virginity as she walked through the hills. \u00a0After two months she returned (<\/em>\u0161\u00fb\u1e07, \u05d5\u05ea\u05e9\u05d1<\/a>)<\/em> to her father, and he did to her as he had (<\/em>ne\u1e0fer, \u05e0\u05d3\u05e8\u05d5<\/a>)<\/em> vowed (<\/em>n\u0101\u1e0far, \u05e0\u05d3\u05e8<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>She died a virgin.\u00a0 Her tragic death gave rise to a custom in Israel. \u00a0Every year Israelite women commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite for four days [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>For a long time I accepted this story as a tragic example<\/a> of the high price of righteousness, or justification, by the works of the law.\u00a0 The repetition of the words \u05d5\u05d9\u05d3\u05e8<\/a> (n\u0101\u1e0far<\/em>) and \u05e0\u05d3\u05e8<\/a> (n\u0101\u1e0far<\/em>) in Judges 11:30 , and \u05e0\u05d3\u05e8<\/a> (ne\u1e0fer<\/em>) and \u05e0\u05d3\u05e8\u05d5<\/a> (ne\u1e0fer<\/em>) in Judges 11:39, as they appear in Numbers 30:2 (n\u0101\u1e0far<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d3\u05e8<\/a> and ne\u1e0fer<\/em>, \u05e0\u05d3\u05e8<\/a>), leads me to believe that the author of Judges probably thought that, too.\u00a0 The Bible I used at the time did not have a topical heading that read: A Foolish Vow Spells Death for a Daughter<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure I would have believed it if it had.\u00a0 It was only after encountering the divorce dilemma in Ezra and Malachi<\/a> that I began to rethink Jephthah\u2019s dilemma.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t prepared yet to find salvation for Jephthah\u2019s daughter in the law (Leviticus 5:4-6a NET).<\/p>\n

…when a person swears an oath (<\/em>\u0161\u0101\u1e07a\u02bf, \u05ea\u05e9\u05d1\u05e2<\/a>)<\/em>, speaking thoughtlessly (<\/em>b\u0101\u1e6d\u0101’, \u05dc\u05d1\u05d8\u05d0<\/a>) <\/em>with his lips, whether to do evil or to do good, with regard to anything which the individual might speak thoughtlessly (<\/em>b\u0101\u1e6d\u0101’, \u05d9\u05d1\u05d8\u05d0<\/a>)<\/em> in an oath (<\/em>\u0161\u1d4a\u1e07\u00fb\u02bf\u00e2, \u05d1\u05e9\u05d1\u05e2\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em>, even if he did not realize it, but he himself has later come to know it and is guilty with regard to one of these oaths \u2013 when an individual becomes guilty with regard to one of these things he must confess how he has sinned, and he must bring his penalty for guilt to the Lord for his sin that he has committed\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
