Love must be without hypocrisy<\/i>,[1]<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 Actually, he wrote, \u1f29 \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2.\u00a0 Paul wrote a lot about \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7.[2]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) does no wrong<\/a> to a neighbor.\u00a0 Therefore love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) is the fulfillment of the law<\/i>.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 What do you want?<\/i> He asked the Corinthians. \u00a0Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline or with love <\/i>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3) and a spirit of gentleness?<\/i>[4]<\/sup><\/a> He not only contrasted \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3 to a rod of discipline<\/em> but to knowledge: Knowledge puffs up<\/i> (\u03c6\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u1fd6, a form of \u03c6\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9),[5]<\/sup><\/a> but love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) builds up<\/i>.[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) is patient, love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) is kind, it is not envious. \u00a0Love does not brag, it is not puffed up<\/i> (\u03c6\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c6\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9). \u00a0It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful. \u00a0It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth. \u00a0It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures<\/i> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9)[7]<\/sup><\/a> all things<\/i>.[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) never ends<\/i>.[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7).\u00a0 But the greatest of these is love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7).[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Everything you do should be done in love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3).[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) of Christ controls us<\/i>, he continued to believers in Corinth, since we have concluded this, that Christ died for all; therefore all have died. \u00a0And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised<\/i>.[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 One of the ways Paul and his associates commended<\/i> themselves was by genuine love<\/i> (2 Corinthians 6:3-10 NET):<\/p>\n

We do not give anyone an occasion for taking an offense in anything, so that no fault may be found with our ministry. \u00a0But as God\u2019s servants, we have commended ourselves in every way, with great endurance, in persecutions, in difficulties, in distresses, in beatings, in imprisonments, in riots, in troubles, in sleepless nights, in hunger, by purity, by knowledge, by patience, by benevolence, by the Holy Spirit, by genuine (\u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c4\u1ff3, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2)[13]<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>love (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3)<\/em>, by truthful teaching, by the power of God, with weapons of righteousness both for the right hand and for the left, through glory and dishonor, through slander and praise; regarded as impostors, and yet true; as unknown, and yet well-known; as dying and yet \u2013 see! \u2013 we continue to live; as those who are scourged and yet not executed; as sorrowful, but always rejoicing, as poor, but making many rich, as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

God\u2019s love (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6) was part of Paul\u2019s benediction to the Corinthians: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f21 \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6; literally, \u201cand this love of God\u2019s\u201d) and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all<\/i>.[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God\u2019s love comes to me as the fruit of his Spirit: the fruit <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03c2)[15]<\/sup><\/a> of the Spirit is love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7), joy <\/i>(\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f70),<\/i>[16]<\/sup><\/a> peace <\/i>(\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7),<\/i>[17]<\/sup><\/a> patience <\/i>(\u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1),<\/i>[18]<\/sup><\/a> kindness, goodness, faithfulness <\/i>(\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2),<\/i>[19]<\/sup><\/a> gentleness <\/i>(\u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u03b0\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2),<\/i>[20]<\/sup><\/a> and self-control. \u00a0Against such things there is no law<\/i>.[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ. \u00a0For he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world that we may be holy and unblemished in his sight in love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3).[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul prayed for the Ephesians that according to the wealth of his glory <\/i>[the Father<\/i>] may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2), so that, because you have been rooted and grounded in love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3), you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and thus to know the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God<\/i>.[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u03b0\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u03b0\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2), with patience<\/i> (\u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1), bearing with one another in love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3), making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace<\/i> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7).[24]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So we are no longer to be children, <\/i>Paul concluded for the Ephesians, tossed back and forth by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching by the trickery of people who craftily carry out their deceitful schemes. \u00a0But practicing the truth in love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3), we will in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head. \u00a0From him the whole body grows, fitted and held together through every supporting ligament. \u00a0As each one does its part, the body grows in love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3).[25]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Therefore, be imitators of God as dearly loved <\/i>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03b7\u03c4\u1f70, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03b7\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2)[26]<\/sup><\/a> children and live in love <\/i>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3), just as Christ also loved<\/i> (\u1f20\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) us and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God<\/i>.[27]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Peace<\/i> (\u0395\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7) to the brothers and sisters, and love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) with faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2), from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ<\/i>.[28]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

And I pray this<\/i>, Paul wrote the Philippians, that your love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) may abound even more and more in knowledge and every kind of insight so that you can decide what is best, and thus be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2) of righteousness<\/i> [love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control<\/i>] that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God<\/i>.[29]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 My goal<\/i>, he wrote the Colossians, is that their hearts, having been knit together in love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3), may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge<\/i>.[30]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

To the church at Thessalonica Paul wrote: And may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3) for one another and for all, just as we do for you, so that your hearts are strengthened in holiness to be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints<\/i>.[31]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 We ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) flourishes more and more and the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) of each one of you all for one another is ever greater. \u00a0As a result we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your perseverance and faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) in all the persecutions and afflictions you are enduring<\/i>.[32]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But the aim of our instruction<\/i>, Paul wrote Timothy, is love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2).[33]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I recall your sincere<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) faith <\/i>(\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) that was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am sure is in you<\/i>.[34]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This sincere faith (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5, \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2), as opposed to a hypocritical faith, comes from God in Christ through the fruit of the Holy Spirit, not from myself.\u00a0 This love without hypocrisy<\/i> (\u1f29 \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) shares the same origin<\/a>, the same path and delivery method.<\/p>\n

Let no one look down on you because you are young<\/i>, Paul admonished Timothy, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3), faithfulness<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2), and purity.[35]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Hold to the standard of sound<\/i> (\u1f51\u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03bd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1f51\u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)[36]<\/sup><\/a> words that you heard from me and do so with the faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) and love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3) that are in Christ Jesus. \u00a0Protect that good thing entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us<\/i>.[37]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jesus warned us what was coming: Then they will hand you over to be persecuted and will kill you.\u00a0 You will be hated by all the nations because of my name. \u00a0Then many will be led into sin, and they will betray one another and hate one another. \u00a0And many false prophets will appear and deceive many, and because lawlessness will increase so much, the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) of many will grow cold. \u00a0But the person who endures<\/i> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9) to the end will be saved<\/i>.[38]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This love without hypocrisy bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures<\/i> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9) all things<\/i>.[39]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Just as the Father has loved<\/i> (\u1f20\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9)[40]<\/sup><\/a> me, Jesus said, I have also loved<\/i> (\u1f20\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9) you; remain in my love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3). \u00a0If you obey my commandments<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03c2, a form of \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03ae),[41]<\/sup><\/a> you will remain in my love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3), just as I have obeyed my Father\u2019s commandments<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03c2, a form of \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03ae) and remain in his love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3). \u00a0I have told you these things so that my joy<\/i> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f70) may be in you, and your joy<\/i> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f70) may be complete. \u00a0My commandment<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u1f74) is this \u2013 to love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b5, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9) one another just as I have loved<\/i> (\u1f20\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9) you<\/i>.[42]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>As I\u2019ve written before<\/a> it is axiomatic to me that the way Jesus loved us was through that same love He received from the Holy Spirit that descended like a dove from heaven, and\u2026remained on him<\/i>.[43]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He prayed as much to his Father if one has ears to hear: I made known your name to them, and I will continue to make it known, so that the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) you have loved<\/i> (\u1f20\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9) me with may be in them, and I may be in them<\/i>.[44]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>Writing to the Corinthians about giving, Paul mentioned something about \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3 which troubled the NET translators: But as you excel in everything \u2013 in faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2), in speech, in knowledge, and in all eagerness and in the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3) from us that is in you \u2013 make sure that you excel in this act of kindness too<\/i>.[45]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The note<\/a> in the NET reads:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reading \u2018the love from us that is in you\u2019 is very difficult in this context, for Paul is here enumerating the Corinthians\u2019 attributes: How is it possible for them to excel \u2018in the love from us that is in you\u2019?\u00a0 Most likely, because of this difficulty, several early scribes, as well as most later ones…altered the text to read \u201cyour love for us\u201d (so NIV; Grk \u1f10\u03be \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd \u1f10\u03bd \u1f21\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3). \u00a0The reading \u1f10\u03be \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd \u1f10\u03bd \u1f51\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3 is found, however, in excellent and early witnesses….As the harder reading it explains the rise of the other reading.\u00a0 What, then, is the force of \u2018in the love from us that is in you\u2019?\u00a0 Most likely, Paul is commending the Corinthians for excelling in deriving some inspiration from the apostles\u2019 love for them.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now, I don\u2019t think Paul was suddenly taking credit for the fruit of the Spirit\u2014the love<\/i> from us that is in you<\/i>.\u00a0 I believe he meant the love from God that he taught them. You, however, have followed my teaching<\/i>, he wrote Timothy, my way of life, my purpose, my faith <\/i>(\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2), my patience <\/i>(\u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u1fb3), my love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3), my endurance, as well as the persecutions and sufferings that happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra<\/i>.[46]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It seems to me a more literal translation of the Greek here would have been: \u201cYou, however, have followed [this] teaching [of mine], [this] way of life, [this] purpose, [this] faith, [this] patience, [this] love, [this] endurance\u2026\u201d \u00a0And this love from Paul\u2019s teaching was in them<\/i> because they believed.<\/p>\n

And that is the key for us, too.\u00a0 Now without faith<\/i> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) it is impossible to please him, for the one who approaches God must believe that he exists<\/i>\u2026[47]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 To come to know and to believe the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) that God has in us<\/i>[48]<\/sup><\/a> we must first believe that it is there for us.\u00a0 It\u2019s a little like learning to float.\u00a0 I had to learn to trust the water, that it would bear me up.\u00a0 And I had to reject the testimony of those who claimed otherwise.<\/p>\n
