I want to continue<\/a> considering the eternal gospel<\/i> the angel flying directly overhead<\/i> \u201cevangelized\u201d (\u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b6\u03c9)[1]<\/sup><\/a> in its context.\u00a0 It is one of three messages by three different angels: one \u201cevangelized,\u201d another declared<\/i> (\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9),[2]<\/sup><\/a> and another declared<\/i> (\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9) in a loud voice<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Three Angels<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, and he had an eternal gospel (\u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd)[3]<\/sup><\/a> to proclaim (\u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b6\u03c9) to those who live on the earth \u2013\u00a0 to every nation, tribe, language, and people.\u00a0 He declared in a loud voice:<\/p>\n

Revelation 14:6, 7a (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

A second angel followed the first, declaring (\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9):<\/p>\n

Revelation 14:8a (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

A third angel followed the first two, declaring (\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c9) in a loud voice:<\/p>\n

\u201cFear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment (\u1f21 \u1f65\u03c1\u03b1 \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2 \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6) has arrived, and worship the one who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water!\u201d<\/p>\n

Revelation 14:7b (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\u201cFallen, fallen is Babylon the great city!\u00a0 She made all the nations drink of the wine of her immoral (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1)[4]<\/sup><\/a> passion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Revelation 14:8b (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\u201cIf anyone worships the beast and his image, and takes the mark on his forehead or his hand, that person will also drink of the wine of God\u2019s anger that has been mixed undiluted in the cup of his wrath, and he will be tortured with fire and sulfur in front of the holy angels and in front of the Lamb.\u00a0 And the smoke from their torture will go up forever and ever, and those who worship the beast and his image will have no rest day or night, along with anyone who receives the mark of his name.\u201d<\/p>\n

Revelation 14:9b-11 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

This requires the steadfast endurance of the saints \u2013 those who obey God\u2019s commandments and hold to their faith in Jesus.<\/p>\n

Revelation 14:12 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

At first I included the final statement with the declaration of the third angel only.\u00a0 Then I realized that the eternal gospel<\/i> the first angel \u201cevangelized\u201d was not exactly \u201cBelieve in the Lord Jesus Christ before you die or burn in hell for all eternity.\u201d\u00a0 Nor was it 1 Corinthians 15:1-8<\/a>.\u00a0 In fact, it didn\u2019t mention Jesus<\/a> at all.\u00a0 It occurred to me that seeing and hearing an angel evangelize an eternal gospel<\/i> like this might also require some steadfast endurance of those who hold to their faith in Jesus<\/i> (Galatians 1:8 NET).<\/p>\n

But even if we (or an angel from heaven) should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be condemned to hell (\u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03b1)![5]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I assumed that the fall of Babylon<\/i> might require the same endurance for reasons that were not yet clear.\u00a0 And at present I don\u2019t know whether\u2014those who obey God\u2019s commandments and hold to their faith in Jesus<\/i>\u2014define the word saints<\/i> or qualify which saints<\/i> are under consideration here.\u00a0 I\u2019ll consider the torture of those who worship the beast in its own essay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle.<\/p>\n

Then another angel came out of the temple, shouting in a loud voice to the one seated on the cloud, \u201cUse your sickle and start to reap, because the time to reap has come, since the earth\u2019s harvest is ripe!\u201d<\/p>\n

Another angel, who was in charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to the angel who had the sharp sickle, \u201cUse your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes off the vine of the earth, because its grapes are now ripe.\u201d<\/p>\n

So the one seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped.<\/p>\n

So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and gathered the grapes from the vineyard of the earth and tossed them into the great winepress of the wrath of God.\u00a0 Then the winepress was stomped outside the city, and blood poured out of the winepress up to the height of horses\u2019 bridles for a distance of almost two hundred miles.<\/p>\n

Despite everything I\u2019ve been through I wanted to relate the outcome of the two judgments to the messages of the three angels like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u2026they blasphemed the name of God\u2026and they would not repent and give him glory.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho will not fear you, O Lord, and glorify your name, because you alone are holy?\u00a0 All nations will come and worship before you for your righteous acts have been revealed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Revelation 15:4 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\u2026they blasphemed God because of the plague of hail, since it was so horrendous.<\/p>\n

Revelation 16:21b (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their sufferings and because of their sores, but nevertheless they still refused to repent of their deeds.<\/p>\n

Then I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had conquered the beast and his image and the number of his name. They were standing by the sea of glass, holding harps given to them by God.<\/p>\n

Revelation 15:2 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

Then I saw another great and astounding sign in heaven: seven angels who have seven final plagues (they are final because in them God\u2019s anger is completed).<\/p>\n

Revelation 15:1 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Judgment and condemnation would be easier for me to grasp if:<\/p>\n

1) The first angel said, \u201cFear God and give him glory\u2026and worship the one who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water!\u201d
\n2) Then in response to that people said, \u201cGreat and astounding are your deeds, Lord God, the All-Powerful!\u00a0 Just and true are your ways, King over the nations!\u00a0 Who will not fear you, O Lord, and glorify your name, because you alone are holy?\u00a0 All nations will come and worship before you for your righteous acts have been revealed.\u201d
\n3) Then in response to that one like a son of man\u2026swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped<\/i>; that is, those who feared God and gave Him glory.
\n4) Then those who feared God and gave Him glory were standing by the sea of glass, holding harps given to them by God<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Or conversely that:<\/p>\n

1) Those who did not fear God but worshipped the beast and his image\u2026
\n2) Were those who blasphemed the name of God, who would not repent and give Him glory\u2026
\n3) And they were tossed<\/i>\u2026into the great winepress of the wrath of God<\/i>\u2026
\n4) To face the seven final plagues<\/i>.<\/p>\n

But that isn\u2019t what\u2019s revealed here, is it?\u00a0 Those who sang the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb probably conquered the beast and his image and the number of his name<\/i>[6]<\/sup><\/a> by refusing to worship him, his image or take the mark.\u00a0 What looked to John like their \u201creaping\u201d by one like a son of man<\/i>, will probably look like mass executions to their contemporaries on earth.\u00a0 Their \u201creaping\u201d is immediately preceded by Revelation 14:13 (NET):<\/p>\n

Then I heard a voice from heaven say, \u201cWrite this: \u2018Blessed are the dead, those who die in the Lord from this moment on!\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYes,\u201d says the Spirit, \u201cso they can rest from their hard work, because their deeds will follow them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It is after they find themselves standing by the sea of glass, holding harps given to them by God<\/i>[7]<\/sup><\/a> that they give glory[8]<\/sup><\/a> to God\u2014Great and astounding are your deeds, Lord God, the All-Powerful!\u00a0 Just and true are your ways<\/i>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014and can\u2019t imagine how or why anyone would not fear Him\u2014Who will not fear you, O Lord, and glorify your name, because you alone are holy?<\/i>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, back on the earth, those who worshiped the beast, and <\/i>were tossed\u2026into the great winepress of the wrath of God<\/i>,[11]<\/sup><\/a> when the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was permitted to scorch people with fire<\/i>, and they were scorched by the terrible heat, yet <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a>)[12]<\/sup><\/a> they blasphemed the name of God, who has ruling authority over these plagues, and they would not repent and give him glory<\/i>.[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast so that darkness covered his kingdom, and people began to bite their tongues because of their pain, they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their sufferings and because of their sores, but nevertheless<\/i>[14]<\/sup><\/a> <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76) they still refused to repent of their deeds<\/i>.[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And finally, when Babylon the great was remembered before God, and was given the cup filled with the wine made of God\u2019s furious wrath<\/i>,[16]<\/sup><\/a> gigantic hailstones, weighing about a hundred pounds each, fell from heaven on people, but <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76) they blasphemed God because of the plague of hail, since it was so horrendous<\/i>.[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The Greek word \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 is usually translated and<\/i> (see the KJV<\/a>, NKJV<\/a>, ASV<\/a>, DNT<\/a>, and YLT<\/a>).\u00a0 Three times the translators of the NET tried to create a contrast that may not be there in the text. \u00a0Without that contrast there is a very simple and obvious story here.\u00a0 All deserved God\u2019s wrath.\u00a0 Those who received his mercy (albeit through refusing the mark of the beast and suffering execution) feared Him and glorified Him.\u00a0 Those who received the wrath they deserved cursed Him and would not repent of their deeds.<\/p>\n

<\/a>God\u2019s judgment is not about my righteousness.\u00a0 It does not reflect or demonstrate my righteousness, but his.\u00a0 The key here is in the song of Moses and the Lamb: you alone are holy<\/i>.[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Why do you call me good?<\/i> Jesus answered a question with another.\u00a0 No one is good except God alone<\/i>.[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For a long time I\u2019ve thought that Jesus was asserting his divinity here in a backhanded, double reverse sort of way.\u00a0 Now it seems so clear that He was fully embracing his humanity, walking humbly, led by the Spirit<\/a>, dependent<\/a> on the Holy Spirit\u2019s love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control<\/i>.[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 No one is good except God alone<\/i>, Jesus said.<\/p>\n

We are told explicitly who will worship the beast (Revelation 13:7, 8 NET):<\/p>\n

The beast was permitted to go to war against the saints and conquer them. \u00a0He was given ruling authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation, and all those who live on the earth will worship the beast, everyone whose name has not been written since the foundation of the world in the book of life belonging to the Lamb who was killed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, the judgment (and the condemnation, for that matter) was made even before they were born or had done anything good or bad (so that God\u2019s purpose in election would stand, not by works but by his calling)<\/i>.[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So John on Patmos had a vision confirming the most difficult words<\/a> Paul wrote (Romans 9:14-18 NET):<\/p>\n

What shall we say then?\u00a0 Is there injustice with God?\u00a0 Absolutely not! \u00a0For he says to Moses<\/a>: \u201cI will have mercy on whom I have mercy<\/i><\/b>, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion<\/b><\/i>.\u201d \u00a0So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy<\/a>. \u00a0For the scripture says to Pharaoh: \u201cFor this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may demonstrate my power in you<\/i><\/b>, and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth<\/b><\/i>.\u201d \u00a0So then, God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

My religious mind screams, \u201cThat\u2019s not fair!\u201d\u00a0 But Paul heard my religious mind, or maybe his own (Romans 9:19-21 NET):<\/p>\n

You will say to me then, \u201cWhy does he still find fault?\u00a0 For who has ever resisted his will?\u201d \u00a0But who indeed are you \u2013 a mere human being \u2013 to talk back to God? \u00a0Does what is molded say to the molder<\/i><\/b>, <\/i>\u201cWhy have you made me like this?<\/i><\/b>\u201d <\/i>\u00a0Has the potter no right to make from the same lump of clay one vessel for special use and another for ordinary use?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And my religious mind says, \u201cNo!\u00a0 Hell, no!\u201d\u00a0 But the new man<\/a> following the Spirit, hears the Lord Jesus say, \u201cdeny<\/i> [your]self, take up<\/i> [your] cross, and follow me<\/i>,\u201d[22]<\/sup><\/a> and listens as He prays to our Father in heaven, \u201cnot my will but yours be done<\/i>.\u201d[23]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Let God be proven true<\/i>, Paul wrote, and every human being shown up as a liar, just as it is written:<\/i> \u201cso that you <\/i><\/b>[i.e., God<\/i>, Paul quoted David at prayer here] will be justified in your words and will prevail when you are judged<\/i><\/b>.\u201d[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And as I fully embrace my humanity and truly believe that it does not depend on<\/i> [my] desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy<\/i>, I can hear something else in a fresh and new way (Romans 11:32-36 NET):<\/p>\n

For God has consigned<\/a> all people to disobedience so that he may show mercy to them all. \u00a0Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! \u00a0How unsearchable are his judgments and how fathomless his ways! \u00a0For who has known the mind of the Lord<\/i><\/b>, or who has been his counselor? <\/b><\/i>\u00a0Or who has first given to God<\/i><\/b>, that God needs to repay him? <\/b><\/i>\u00a0For from him and through him and to him are all things. \u00a0To him be glory forever! \u00a0Amen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
