Love must be without hypocrisy.<\/i>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/i>A note<\/a> in the NET explained that must be<\/i> \u201cis understood in the Greek text\u201d\u00a0 \u1f29 \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2.\u00a0 I am inclined to see it more as a subject heading: The love unfeigned<\/i>,[2]<\/sup><\/a> as Robert Young<\/a>[3]<\/sup><\/a> translated it.\u00a0 I think Paul\u2019s thinking shifted naturally from the gifts of the Spirit in Romans 12:3-8<\/a> to the fruit of the Spirit in Romans 12:9-21<\/a>, this unfeigned<\/i>–without hypocrisy<\/i>–genuine<\/i>[4]<\/sup><\/a>–sincere<\/i>[5]<\/sup><\/a> love.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know Greek so I thought it best to study the translation of the words \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 and \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2 to see if the NET translators had a good reason for regarding \u1f29 \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2 as a rule rather than a subject heading.<\/p>\n

James used \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2 in exactly this form, the wisdom from above is <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03bc\u03af)[6]<\/sup><\/a> first pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and not hypocritical<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The verb of being \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd (is<\/i>) occurs in this sentence, while no verb occurs in \u1f29 \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2. \u00a0The mere presence of \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2, however, did not persuade the NET translators to supply must be<\/i> here: the wisdom from above <\/i>[must be] first pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and not hypocritical<\/i>.\u00a0 I found over sixty occurrences of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 in the New Testament (listed<\/a> at the end of this essay).\u00a0 I\u2019ll only comment on those where a verb was supplied by the translators.<\/p>\n

There is no verb in, But the greatest of these is love<\/i>,[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd \u03b4\u1f72 \u03c4\u03bf\u03cd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u1f21 \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7.\u00a0 Is<\/i> was supplied here and in Robert Young\u2019s translation, and the greatest of these\u00a0is love<\/i>.[9]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Love<\/i> [is] without hypocrisy<\/i> would still be definitional rather than a rule if is<\/i> had been supplied rather than must be<\/i>.\u00a0 In, My love be with all of you in Christ Jesus<\/i>,[10]<\/sup><\/a> the preposition \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f70[11]<\/sup><\/a> was translated be with<\/i>, as in, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with <\/i>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f70) you all<\/i>.[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Young supplied is<\/i> in both instances, my love\u00a0is with you all in Christ Jesus<\/i>,[13]<\/sup><\/a> and, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,\u00a0is with you all<\/i>.[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The clause in English\u2014so that, because you have been rooted and grounded in love<\/i>,[15]<\/sup><\/a> which seems more like a phrase in Greek, \u1f10\u03bd \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3 \u1f10\u03c1\u03c1\u03b9\u03b6\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c4\u03b5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u2014is interesting.\u00a0 Consider, Therefore, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c1\u03c1\u03b9\u03b6\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, a form of \u1fe5\u03b9\u03b6\u03cc\u03c9)[16]<\/sup><\/a> and built up in him and firm in your faith just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness<\/i>.[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here \u1f10\u03c1\u03c1\u03b9\u03b6\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 was translated simply rooted<\/i>.\u00a0 Young translated it being rooted<\/i>: as, then, ye did receive Christ Jesus the Lord, in him walk ye,\u00a0being rooted and built up in him, and confirmed in the faith<\/i>\u2026[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 At first glance I thought the NET translators described something that happened in the past while Young described ongoing action.\u00a0 On closer inspection it seemed that the NET translators tried to accommodate the sense of ongoing action with the word continue<\/i>.\u00a0 They translated \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5 (a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9)[19]<\/sup><\/a> continue to live<\/i>, where Young translated it simply walk<\/i>.<\/p>\n

It is the same in, And you were at one time strangers and enemies in your minds as expressed through your evil deeds, but now he has reconciled you by his physical body through death to present you holy, without blemish, and blameless before him \u2013 if indeed you remain in the faith, established<\/i> (\u03c4\u03b5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, a form of \u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9)[20]<\/sup><\/a> and firm, without shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard<\/i>.[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here \u03c4\u03b5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 was translated simply established<\/i>, while Young translated it being founded<\/i>: if also ye remain in the faith, being founded and settled, and not moved away from the hope of the good news<\/i>\u2026[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So I wondered why \u1f10\u03bd \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3 \u1f10\u03c1\u03c1\u03b9\u03b6\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c4\u03b5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 wasn\u2019t translated \u201cin love rooted and established\u201d in the NET rather than, so that, because you have been rooted and grounded in love<\/i> (Ephesians 3:14-19 NET).<\/p>\n

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on the earth is named. \u00a0I pray that according to the wealth of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, [in love rooted and established]<\/em> so that\u2026you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Young\u2019s translation reads, that the Christ may dwell through the faith in your hearts, in love having been rooted and founded<\/i>\u2026[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Obviously there is something more than the word ending that determines the tense of the verb, whether it indicates something that happened in the past or something ongoing. \u00a0This exercise however has made it much clearer to me how intricately faith and love are intertwined in God\u2019s action and mine.\u00a0 He strengthens me in the inner person with power through his Spirit that Christ may dwell in my heart through faith, or, that the Christ may dwell through the faith in my heart, in love having been rooted and founded, established, grounded.\u00a0 I for my part continue to live my life in Him just as I received Christ Jesus as Lord; that is, by faith, being rooted and built up in him, and confirmed in the faith.\u00a0 And so I remain in the faith, being founded and settled, and not moved away from the hope of the good news.<\/p>\n

<\/a>This is why I want\u00a0 \u1f29 \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 \u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2 to be a subject heading\u2014\u201cThis love without hypocrisy\u201d\u2014rather than a rule\u2014Love must be without hypocrisy<\/i>.\u00a0 And I\u2019m not deaf.\u00a0 I hear how ridiculously pedantic that sounds.\u00a0 But for me it is a matter of life and death.\u00a0 I used to rush through Paul\u2019s \u201cjibber-jabber\u201d to get to his rules, to honor my contract<\/a> with God, as if the man who wrote of God\u2019s law\u2014For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin<\/i>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014believed that adherence to his own rules could make anyone righteous.<\/p>\n

In the thirteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians<\/a> Paul described God\u2019s love, the love that is the fruit<\/a> of his Spirit, the love that is the fulfillment<\/a> of the law.\u00a0 I believe he described that same love here in Romans 12:9-21.\u00a0 Abhor what is evil, <\/i>he wrote, cling to what is good<\/i>.[25]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In the past this \u201crule\u201d only confirmed me in my folly.\u00a0 It was up to me, I thought, to abhor sin and keep the law, or Paul\u2019s definition of love as if it were a law.\u00a0 But the word translated evil<\/i> is \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>.[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Frankly, I can think of nothing more \u201c1) full of labours, annoyances, hardships 1a) pressed and harassed by labours 1b) bringing toils, annoyances, perils; of a time full of peril to Christian faith and steadfastness; causing pain and trouble 2) bad, of a bad nature or condition 2a) in a physical sense: diseased or blind 2b) in an ethical sense: evil wicked, bad\u201d than the belief that I should or could make myself righteous by obeying the law or Paul\u2019s definition of love as if it were a law.<\/p>\n

Whenever I attempted it I wasn\u2019t living my life in Him just as I received Christ Jesus as Lord.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t remaining in the faith, being founded and settled, and not moved away from the hope of the good news.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t even clinging to what is good (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1ff7, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2).[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

No one is good<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f78\u03c2) except God alone<\/i>,[28]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said.<\/p>\n
