and Righteous Prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jesus contrasted <em>religious<\/em> and righteous prayer in a parable in Luke 18:9-14. \u00a0When his disciples were curious why He spoke to people in parables (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Matthew+13:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 13:10<\/a>), Jesus answered in two different ways, first (Matthew 13:11, 12 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You have been given the opportunity to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but they have not. \u00a0For whoever has will be given more, and will have an abundance.\u00a0 But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Usually, Jesus\u2019 disciples asked for, and received, further explanation what the parables meant. \u00a0Jesus continued (Matthew 13:13-15 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For this reason I speak to them in parables <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parab.html#parabolais\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03b1\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parab.html#parabolh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03ae<\/a>)<\/em>: Although they see they do not see, and although they hear they do not hear nor do they understand. \u00a0And concerning<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>them the prophecy of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Isaiah+6:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah<\/a><em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>is fulfilled that says: \u2018<strong><em>You will listen carefully yet will never understand, you will look closely<\/em><\/strong><em> <strong>yet will never comprehend<\/strong>. <\/em>\u00a0<strong><em>For the heart of this people has become dull; they are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>them<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em>\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So a parable, without an explanation, was deliberately designed to be cryptic, its actual meaning hidden beneath something obvious\u2014<em>Although they see they do not see, and although they hear they do not hear<\/em>\u2014but misleading\u2014<em>nor do they understand<\/em>.\u00a0 Here is the parable (Luke 18:9-14 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jesus also<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>told this parable to some who were confident <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pep.html#pepoiqotas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03cc\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peiqw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>that they were righteous <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaioi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>and looked down on everyone else. \u00a0\u201cTwo men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.\u00a0 The Pharisee stood and prayed about himself like this: \u2018God, I thank you that I am not like other people: extortionists, unrighteous <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/adi.html#adikoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/adi.html#adikos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>people, adulterers <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moicoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03bf\u03af<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moicos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>\u2013 or even like this tax collector.\u00a0 I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.\u2019 \u00a0The tax collector, however,<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>stood far off and would not even look up to heaven, but beat<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>his breast and said, \u2018God, be <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Romans+9:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">merciful<\/a> to me, sinner that I am!\u2019 \u00a0I tell you that this man went down to his home justified <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ded.html#dedikaiwmenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>rather than<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the Pharisee.<em><a <\/em>\u00a0For everyone who exalts <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uy.html#uywn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c8\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uy.html#uyow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c8\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>himself will be humbled <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ta.html#tapeinwqhsetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ta.html#tapeinow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, but he who humbles <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ta.html#tapeinwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9)<\/em> himself will be exalted <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uy.html#uywqhsetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c8\u03c9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f51\u03c8\u03cc\u03c9)<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I understand it some Pharisees looked down on tax collectors because the latter supported (and profited from supporting) Gentile sinners, the Roman government, by collecting (and sometimes, extorting) money from the god-fearing of Israel.\u00a0 Many Pharisees viewed Roman rule as illegitimate and believed that Messiah was coming soon to set things right.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_imitate\"><\/a>What I now call my <em>religious<\/em> mind helped me <em>mis<\/em>understand this parable for years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Obviously, I hope what I think now shares in the <em> <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+2:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mind of Christ<\/a><\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> but had you asked me then I probably would have assured you that what I now call my <em>religious<\/em> mind was the <em>mind of Christ<\/em>.\u00a0 Bible study can be like that.\u00a0 At the end of the book of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Judges+21:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Judges<\/a>\u2014<em>In those days Israel had no king; Each man did what he considered to be right<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>\u2014I assumed that God wanted Israel to have a king and the events described in the book of Judges were the reasons why.\u00a0 When I read <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Samuel+8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Samuel 8<\/a> I had to rethink that assumption. \u00a0<a id=\"_few\"><\/a>I\u2019ll try to explain the difference between my <em>religious<\/em> mind and what I now think.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">\n<p else.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Luke 18:9 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">This has nothing to do with me.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a hypocritical Pharisee but a follower of Jesus Christ.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">Faith is the key here: <em>when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>on earth?<\/em> (Luke 18:8b NET).\u00a0 Childlike faith pays little heed to words.\u00a0 It determines their meaning by (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">Yeah, I get it.\u00a0 Pharisees were so wicked in Jesus\u2019 sight that He even preferred tax collectors and prostitutes to Pharisees.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">In this parable Jesus contrasted two types of prayer.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">The Pharisee stood and prayed about himself like this: confidence flowed from his adherence to God\u2019s law and the precepts of his religion.\u00a0 <a id=\"_religion\"><\/a>This is perhaps the essence of religion, <em>my attempt to please God through my obedience to external norms or standards<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0This is a <em>religious<\/em> prayer from a <em>religious<\/em> mind.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">The tax collector, however, stood far off and would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, \u2018God, be merciful to me, sinner that I am!\u2019<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Luke 18:13 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">Yeah, I remember what that felt like.\u00a0 I don\u2019t ever want to feel like that again.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Romans 3:19 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">I tell you that this man went down to his home justified\u00a0rather than the Pharisee.\u00a0 For everyone who exalts\u00a0himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Luke 18:14 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">So, Jesus wants me to be obedient like the Pharisee, so I can pray like the Pharisee.\u00a0 He just wants me to be more humble about it, and not disparage those who are less righteous than I.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"213\">For <em>no one is declared righteous <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiwqhsetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)\u00a0<em>before him<\/em> by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20 NET).\u00a0 The tax collector prayed the <em>righteous<\/em> prayer because afterward Jesus <em>justified<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ded.html#dedikaiwmenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9) him, or <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/12\/08\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-3\/\">declared him <em>righteous<\/em><\/a> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<blockquote><p>What shall we say then? \u00a0Is there <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/29\/justice-and-mercy\/\">injustice<\/a> <em>(<a mercy on whom I have mercy<\/strong><\/em><em>, <strong>and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but
