&#8211; Numbers, Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>Now Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, who were Reubenites, took men and rebelled against Moses, along with some of the Israelites, 250 leaders of the community, chosen from the assembly, famous men.<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>Fear<\/i>, the Hebrew word <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc\">y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/a><\/i>, doesn\u2019t appear in the story of Korah\u2019s rebellion.\u00a0 That in itself is instructive.\u00a0 Though there is plenty to be frightened of, there is no fear of the Lord here; it is difficult to find even a hint of reverence for God.\u00a0 The rebels confronted Moses and Aaron and said, <i>\u201cYou take too much upon yourselves, seeing that the whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. \u00a0Why then do you exalt yourselves above the community of the Lord?\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Accusing Moses of exalting himself <i>above the community of the Lord<\/i> was hitting below the belt.\u00a0 He was the most reluctant Messiah: <i>\u201cWho am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, or that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> he had said.\u00a0 Then he had caviled, <i>\u201cIf I go to the Israelites and tell them, \u2018The God of your fathers has sent me to you,\u2019 and they ask me, \u2018What is his name?\u2019 \u2013 what should I say to them?\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He had fretted, <i>\u201cAnd if they do not believe me or pay attention to me, but say, \u2018The Lord has not appeared to you\u2019?\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He had made excuses, <i>\u201cO my Lord, I am not an eloquent man, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant, for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He had all but refused to serve, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Exodus+4:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">angering<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> the Lord in the process, <i>\u201cO my Lord, please send anyone else whom you wish to send!\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He had wholeheartedly admitted that he was <i>burdened excessively, beyond<\/i> [his] <i>strength, so that<\/i> [he] <i>despaired even of living<\/i>:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> <i>I am not able to bear this entire people alone<\/i>, Moses had cried out to the Lord, <i>because it is too heavy for me! \u00a0But if you are going to deal with me like this, then kill me immediately.\u00a0 If I have found favor in your sight then do not let me see my trouble<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And his most profound hope was that all Israel would know the Lord and be holy in fact: <i>\u201cAre you jealous for me?\u201d<\/i> he had said when Joshua was offended because Eldad and Medad had prophesied in the camp.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>\u201cI wish that all the Lord\u2019s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With his body Moses <i>fell down with his face to the ground<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> when he heard the rebels\u2019 accusation, but I wonder about his heart (Numbers 16:5-7 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then he said to Korah and to all his company, \u201cIn the morning the Lord will make known who are his, and who is holy. \u00a0He will cause that person to approach him; the person he has chosen he will cause to approach him. \u00a0Do this, Korah, you and all your company: Take censers, put fire in them, and set incense on them before the Lord tomorrow, and the man whom the Lord chooses will be holy. \u00a0You take too much upon yourselves, you sons of Levi!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019ll be the first to admit that it doesn\u2019t pay to be too subtle with Moses\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/\">matter-of-fact writing style<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> but the brute fact of goading Korah and his accomplices into presenting <i><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Leviticus+10:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strange fire before the Lord<\/a><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> sounds like sarcasm to me.\u00a0 Moses spoke to Korah and the sons of Levi, but he <i>summoned<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><i> <\/i>Dathan and Abiram as a prince would summon unruly subjects.\u00a0 They refused his summons and said, <i>Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of the land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness? \u00a0Now do you want to make yourself a prince over us? \u00a0Moreover, you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey, nor given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. \u00a0Do you think you can blind<\/i> [continue to deceive] <i>these men?<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was another low blow.\u00a0 It hadn\u2019t been that long since Moses had <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+14:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interceded<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> for Dathan and Abiram, when the Lord wanted to <i>strike them with the pestilence<\/i> and <i>disinherit them<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> after they had refused to enter the promised land because they feared the people living there rather than the Lord.\u00a0 Reading the Bible in faith I am privy to the secret communication between the Lord and Moses that Dathan and Abiram heard about only through Moses.\u00a0 Granted, they had rejected the privilege of hearing from the Lord when they said to Moses, <i>\u201cYou speak to us and we will listen, but do not let God speak with us, lest we die.\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Still, I want to consider the truth of Dathan\u2019s and Abiram\u2019s accusations, both literal and perceptual.<\/p>\n<p><i>Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of the land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness?\u00a0 <\/i>Yes, Moses had led them out of Egypt, and, yes, they were going to die in the wilderness (Numbers 14:28-30a):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As I live, says the Lord, I will surely do to you just what you have spoken in my hearing. \u00a0Your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness \u2013 all those of you who were numbered, according to your full number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me. \u00a0You will by no means enter into the land where I swore to settle you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>Now do you want to make yourself a prince over us?<\/i>\u00a0 Moses had summoned them as a prince.<\/p>\n<p><i>Moreover, you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey, nor given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards.\u00a0 <\/i>True, under Moses\u2019 tenure as leader Dathan and Abiram would not inherit fields and vineyards in the promised land.\u00a0 Their children might have: <i>But I will bring in your little ones, whom you said would become victims of war, and they will enjoy the land that you have despised<\/i>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> the Lord promised.\u00a0 Dathan and Abiram, however, would die in the wilderness.<\/p>\n<p><i>Do you think you can blind<\/i> [continue to deceive] <i>these men?<\/i>\u00a0 Slavery in Egypt didn\u2019t seem so bad any longer.\u00a0 But here they were wrong.\u00a0 Moses had not deceived anyone.\u00a0 Dathan and Abiram added up all the facts they perceived but came to the wrong sum.\u00a0 How do I know?\u00a0 Through faith, the very faith Dathan and Abiram did not have, though they saw with their eyes, and lived through, the circumstances I can only read about.<\/p>\n<p><i>Moses was very angry<\/i>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Perhaps I should accept his anger as righteous indignation and let it go at that.\u00a0 I certainly have in the past.\u00a0 I would be willing to do so again, if not for the Scripture the Holy Spirit brings to my mind: <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote9sym\">Understand this<\/a>, my dear brothers and sisters!\u00a0 Let <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote10sym\">every<\/a> person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger. \u00a0For human anger <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote11sym\">does not accomplish<\/a> God\u2019s righteousness<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<i>Have no respect for their offering!<\/i> Moses \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/23\/romans-part-40\/#_intercession\">interceded<\/a>\u201d with the Lord.\u00a0 <i>I have not taken so much as one donkey from them<\/i> [no one accused him of stealing anything], <i>nor have I harmed any one of them!<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let me say before I go any farther down this road, that apart from the Spirit of God raising the dead, I would have folded long before this if I were under Moses\u2019 pressures.\u00a0 But I do wonder here if Moses was concerned with justifying the Lord or himself.\u00a0 And I probably ask the question because I\u2019ve spent so much of my time and energy trying to justify myself.\u00a0 Be that as it may, I can\u2019t help but wonder if I am staring at the terminal moraine, if you will, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+12:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most humble man in the world<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Is this the foreshadowing of what would become explicit at the waters of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+20:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meribah<\/a>?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am foreshadowing for those who know the story and will be explicit for any who do not.\u00a0 Even Moses could not enter the promised land.\u00a0 <i>\u201cThen who can be saved?\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus\u2019 astonished disciples exclaimed on a different subject.\u00a0 But I think his answer still applies: <i>\u201cThis is impossible for mere humans, but not for God; all things are possible for God.\u201d<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0And don\u2019t fret too much for Moses. \u00a0He came back in the sequel (Luke 9:28-31 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026Jesus took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up the mountain to pray.\u00a0 As he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became very bright, a brilliant white.\u00a0 Then two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with him.\u00a0 They appeared in glorious splendor and spoke about his departure that he was about to carry out at Jerusalem.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This followed Jesus\u2019 promise, <i>I tell you the truth, there are some standing here who will not experience death before they see the Son of Man coming <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c1\u03c7\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <i>in his kingdom<\/i>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn29\"><sup>[29]<\/sup><\/a> as Matthew recalled it. \u00a0The definition of \u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 in the NET lists \u201cto appear, make one&#8217;s appearance\u2026come forth, show itself\u201d and \u201cbecome known\u201d as possible meanings.\u00a0 These make some sense of Mark\u2019s Gospel account (which I assume was Peter\u2019s recollections), <i>there are some standing here who will not experience death before they see the kingdom of God come<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bb\u03b7\u03bb\u03c5\u03b8\u03c5\u1fd6\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <i>with power<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The <i><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+17:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vision<\/a><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f45\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\">\u1f45\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) of not just one but three glorified sons of man was overwhelming to Peter in its power (Luke 9:32, 33 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now Peter and those with him were quite sleepy, but as they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.\u00a0 Then as the men were starting to leave, Peter said to Jesus, \u201cMaster, it is good for us to be here. \u00a0Let us make three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah\u201d \u2013 not knowing what he was saying.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>For they were afraid<\/i> (\u1f14\u03ba\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f14\u03ba\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f14\u03ba\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) Mark wrote, <i>and he did not know what to say<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn32\"><sup>[32]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But God, the Father, made sure there was no confusion in the matter (Luke 9:34, 35 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As <em>[Peter]<\/em> was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid <em>(\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u1f75\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> as they entered the cloud.\u00a0 Then a voice came from the cloud, saying, \u201cThis is my Son, my Chosen One. \u00a0Listen to him!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s a beautiful picture of the kingdom of God.\u00a0 And the hope of, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+17:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not being afraid<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn33\"><sup>[33]<\/sup><\/a> but walking among them as one of them is wonderful beyond description.\u00a0 It\u2019s an occupational hazard of studying the Bible I suppose, but Jesus, Moses, Elijah, Peter, Paul, Abraham, David, Jephthah\u2019s daughter, Mary and Abigail are more vibrant and alive to me than most of the people I see every day. \u00a0I can only imagine what it was like for Jesus to step out of that vision and back into the here and now.\u00a0 I know what was on his mind.\u00a0 The Scriptures make it abundantly clear that He was concerned that his disciples understood <i>his departure that he was about to carry out at Jerusalem<\/i>.\u00a0 The clock was ticking loudly then.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_afraid\"><\/a><i>As they were coming down from the mountain, he gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.\u00a0 They kept this statement to themselves, discussing what this rising from the dead meant<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn34\"><sup>[34]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<i>But while the entire crowd was amazed at everything Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples, \u201cTake these words to heart, for the Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.\u201d\u00a0 But they did not understand this statement; its meaning had been concealed from them, so that they could not grasp it. \u00a0Yet they were afraid <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf<i>to<\/i>, another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9)<i> to ask him about this statement<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn35\"><sup>[35]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>They went out from there and passed through Galilee. \u00a0But Jesus did not want anyone to know, for he was teaching his disciples and telling them, \u201cThe Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men. \u00a0They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.\u201d\u00a0 But they did not understand this statement and were afraid <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf, another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9) <i>to ask him<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn36\"><sup>[36]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>When they gathered together in Galilee, Jesus told them, \u201cThe Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.\u00a0 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.\u201d \u00a0And they became greatly distressed<\/i>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/21\/fear-numbers-part-3\/#_ftn37\"><sup>[37]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally they began to hear Him.\u00a0 They <i>became greatly distressed<\/i> which is understandable, maybe even commendable, but completely beside the point!\u00a0\u00a0So with the foreknowledge of their unbelief weighing on his mind,
