or Judgment? &#8211; Part 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/14\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-6\/#_assumptions\">third assumption<\/a> I found in Richard Wayne Garganta\u2019s attempt to eliminate \u201chell talk\u201d from the Bible was: 3) Punishment is not merely consequential but effectual in purging or purifying sin.\u00a0 I\u2019ve selected a quote from \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/richardwaynegarganta.com\/Bible%20Threatenings%20Explained.htm#1\" target=\"-blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bible Threatenings Explained<\/a>\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> that led me to consider this assumption as a major precursor of his views on hell:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>What God is determined to destroy in the sinner is that which makes him a sinner.\u00a0 Christ said He came to utterly destroy evil &#8211;\u00a0 the works of the devil.\u00a0 He said he came to save the world, not to destroy men.\u00a0 God proceeds towards the wayward as a good parent must, to eradicate the evil by punishment.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While I must agree that God has proceeded \u201cto eradicate the evil by punishment,\u201d I am not convinced that He believes, or the Bible teaches, that punishment is the method that will \u201cdestroy in the sinner\u2026that which makes him a sinner\u201d or \u201cutterly destroy evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the flood <em>the Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind had become great on the earth. \u00a0Every inclination of the thoughts of their minds was only evil all the time. \u00a0The Lord regretted that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was highly offended. \u00a0So the Lord said, \u201cI will wipe humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth \u2013 everything from humankind to animals, including creatures that move on the ground and birds of the air, for I regret that I have made them.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>The earth was ruined in the sight of God; the earth was filled with violence. \u00a0God saw the earth, and indeed it was ruined, for all living creatures on the earth were sinful<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Death by drowning is a kind of ultimate punishment.\u00a0 I suppose it was effective for a time at purging wickedness, evil, violence and sinfulness from the earth, until Noah cursed Canaan for Ham\u2019s witness(?)\u2014<em>Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father\u2019s nakedness<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014gossip(?)\u2014Ham <em>told his two brothers who were outside<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014mockery, maybe?\u00a0 Let\u2019s be frank, wasn\u2019t it Ham\u2019s revelation of the frayed dirty edges of Noah\u2019s righteousness that angered Noah?\u00a0 Hadn\u2019t Noah exposed himself, literally in a drunken stupor and figuratively when he cursed Ham\u2019s son?\u00a0 I should probably say <em>figuratively<\/em> in a drunken stupor and <em>literally<\/em> when he cursed Canaan, to keep the metaphor and reality straight.<\/p>\n<p>My difficulty with Mr. Garganta\u2019s third assumption is more personal and idiosyncratic to the path of righteousness I\u2019m on than the others.\u00a0 As the Holy Spirit convinced me that the Bible as a book of rules would never satisfy my God-given hunger and thirst for righteousness I needed a new understanding of Paul\u2019s assurance: <em>Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/29\/solomons-wealth-part-2\/#sdfootnote1sym\">reproof<\/a>, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <a id=\"_transition\"><\/a>One fruitful way of viewing the Bible is as a narrative of the tidal movement from human responsibility to God\u2019s grace.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">The highwater the murderer Cain, <em>that if you do what is right, you will be fine?\u00a0 But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door.\u00a0 It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Genesis 4:7 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\"><em>I have been crucified with Christ<\/em>, wrote the murderer Saul transformed as Paul the Apostle, <em>and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.\u00a0 So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Galatians 2:20 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">Cain killed his brother in a jealous rage.\u00a0 If it weren\u2019t so tragic, the image of God telling this murderer to subdue the sin that desires to dominate him is laughable.<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">Saul tried to cover his motives with law and religion, but Paul eventually recognized it as the very same jealous rage.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I don\u2019t get the impression that Cain expected God to bless that jealous rage as righteousness.\u00a0 Saul did, superficially at least.\u00a0 Something in Jesus\u2019 words must have rung true somewhere deep within Saul, since we have the writings of Paul the Apostle, and not Saul the blind Inquisitor who withstood the \u201ctemptation\u201d of the \u201cdemon\u201d disguised as an angel of light on the road to Damascus.\u00a0 Saul the blind Inquisitor was <em>crucified with Christ<\/em> there, or later in the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+1:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">desert<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Paul himself related this death to baptism: <em>Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? \u00a0Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I will suggest that the most distance covered from human responsibility to the grace of God in the shortest amount of time is most evident in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/31\/the-two-covenants\/\">two covenants<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a> separated by <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Exodus+24:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forty days<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> and the incident with the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Exodus+32:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">golden calf<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I don\u2019t think I would ever have recognized that movement apart from Paul\u2019s writings and the Holy Spirit\u2019s leading and guidance.\u00a0 Here I want to consider that movement as revealed in the writings of the prophet Hosea and relate it to the assumption that punishment is\/was effective at purging or purifying sin rather than merely a consequence of that sin.<\/p>\n<p>[The people of the northern kingdom of Israel] <em>consult their wooden idols<\/em>, the Lord spoke through Hosea, <em>and their diviner\u2019s staff answers with an oracle.\u00a0 The wind of prostitution<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_z\u00e2n\u00fbn\">z\u00e2n\u00fbn<\/a><\/em>) <em>blows them astray; they commit spiritual <\/em>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_tachath\">tachath<\/a><\/em>) <em>adultery<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_z\u00e2n\u00e2h\">z\u00e2n\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>) <em>against their God <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/29\/adultery-in-the-prophets-part-1\/#_Table39\">Table<\/a>]<em>. \u00a0They sacrifice <\/em>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_z\u00e2bach\">z\u00e2bach<\/a><\/em>) <em>on the mountaintops, and burn offerings on the hills; they sacrifice under <\/em>(<em>tachath<\/em>) <em>oak, poplar, and terebinth, because their shade is so pleasant.\u00a0 As a result, your daughters have become cult prostitutes<\/em> (<em>z\u00e2n\u00e2h<\/em>), <em>and your daughters-in-law commit adultery<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2\u02bcaph\">n\u00e2\u02bcaph<\/a><\/em>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/29\/adultery-in-the-prophets-part-1\/#_Table41\">Table<\/a>].\u00a0 <em>I will not punish<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_p\u00e2qad\">p\u00e2qad<\/a><\/em>) <em>your daughters when they commit prostitution<\/em> (<em>z\u00e2n\u00e2h<\/em>), <em>nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery<\/em> (<em>n\u00e2\u02bcaph<\/em>).\u00a0 <em>For the men consort with harlots<\/em> (<em>z\u00e2n\u00e2h<\/em>), <em>they sacrifice<\/em> (<em>z\u00e2bach<\/em>) <em>with temple prostitutes<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_qed\u00eash\u00e2h\">q<sup>e<\/sup>d\u00eash\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Ephraim<\/em> [another name for the northern kingdom of Israel] <em>has attached himself to idols, <\/em>the Lord continued. <em>\u00a0Do not go near him <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>]<em>! \u00a0They consume their alcohol, then engage in cult prostitution<\/em> (<em>z\u00e2n\u00e2h<\/em>); <em>they dearly love their shameful<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_q\u00e2l\u00f4n\">q\u00e2l\u00f4n<\/a><\/em>) <em>behavior <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/29\/adultery-in-the-prophets-part-1\/#_Table47\">Table<\/a>].<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I assume that this was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a> (that <em>z\u00e2bach<\/em> was used facetiously, they offered sexual intercourse to God under shade trees with <em>q<sup>e<\/sup>d\u00eash\u00e2h<\/em>).\u00a0 And I assume that this was essentially what was going on in the church at Pergamum:\u00a0 <em>But I have a few things against you<\/em>, Jesus said: <em>You have some people there who follow the teaching of Balaam, who instructed Balak to put a stumbling block before the people of Israel so they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0It is clearly what was going on with the Moabite women after Balaam prophesied <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for<\/a>, rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">against<\/a>, Israel (Numbers 25:1-3 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to commit sexual immorality <em>(<\/em>z\u00e2n\u00e2h<em>)<\/em> with the daughters of Moab. \u00a0These women invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; then the people ate and bowed down to their gods. \u00a0When Israel joined themselves to Baal-peor, the anger of the Lord flared up against Israel.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u201cChildren of God\u201d called it <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xfamily.org\/index.php\/Flirty_Fishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flirty fishing<\/a><\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also assume this kind of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 was practiced in the church at Thyatira:\u00a0 <em>You tolerate that woman Jezebel<\/em>, Jesus said, <em>who calls herself a prophetess, and by her teaching deceives my servants to commit sexual immorality<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) <em>and to eat food sacrificed to idols. \u00a0I have given her time to repent, but she is not willing to repent of her sexual immorality<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1). \u00a0<em>Look! \u00a0I am throwing her onto a bed of violent illness, and those who commit adultery<\/em> (\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03cd\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>with her into terrible suffering, unless they repent of her deeds. \u00a0Furthermore, I will strike her followers with a deadly disease, and then all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts. \u00a0I will repay each one of you what your deeds deserve<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is essentially the same punishment He brought upon Israel when they <em>joined themselves to Baal-peor<\/em>\u2014<em>Those that died in the plague were 24,000<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014unless <em>plague<\/em> here is a euphemism for the men <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+25:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arrested and hanged<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> (not to mention <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+25:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skewered<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>).\u00a0 But to the northern kingdom of Israel, He said, <em>I will be like a lion to Ephraim, like a young lion to the house of Judah.\u00a0 I myself will tear them to pieces, <\/em><em>then I will carry them off, and no one will be able to rescue them! \u00a0Then I will return again to my lair <\/em><em>until they have suffered their punishment<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u00e2sham\">\u02bc\u00e2sham<\/a><\/em>)<em>.<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a><em>\u00a0 Then they will seek me; in their distress they will earnestly seek me<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He continued to prophesy what Israel would say after they were punished (Hosea 6:1-3 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Come on! \u00a0Let\u2019s return to the Lord!\u00a0 He himself has torn us to pieces, but he will heal us!\u00a0 He has injured us, but he will bandage our wounds! \u00a0He will restore us in a very short time; he will heal us in a little while, so that we may live in his presence. \u00a0So let us acknowledge him!\u00a0 Let us seek to acknowledge the Lord!\u00a0 He will come to our rescue as certainly as the appearance of the dawn, as certainly as the winter rain comes, as certainly as the spring rain that waters the land.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If I stopped here punishment would appear to be overwhelmingly effective at purging or purifying evil.\u00a0 The Lord didn\u2019t stop here so neither will I (Hosea 6:4 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What am I going to do with you, O Ephraim?\u00a0 What am I going to do with you, O Judah?\u00a0 For your faithfulness is as fleeting as the morning mist; it disappears as quickly as dawn\u2019s dew!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_doer\"><\/a>There is a refrain in Deuteronomy: <em>In this way you must purge<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_b\u00e2\u02bdar\">b\u00e2\u02bdar<\/a><\/em>) <em>out evil from within<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>In this way you will purge<\/em> (<em>b\u00e2\u02bdar<\/em>) <em>evil from among you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u2026<em>in this way you will purge<\/em> (<em>b\u00e2\u02bdar<\/em>) <em>evil from Israel<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u2026<em>in this way you will purge<\/em> (<em>b\u00e2\u02bdar<\/em>) <em>evil from among you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0All refer to capital punishment, stoning primarily. \u00a0If that is all that Mr. Garganta meant by his assertion that \u201cGod proceeds\u2026to eradicate the evil by punishment,\u201d I concede the point.\u00a0 But it seems clear that the survivors of punishment of lesser consequence than death, or those who merely fear punishment, are encouraged to hypocrisy by such punishment and fear.\u00a0 They become <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/12\/13\/romans-part-49\/#_actors\">actors<\/a>, not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#_poet\">poets<\/a> or doers of the law. \u00a0They are devoid of the love that fulfills the law.\u00a0 The Lord\u2019s judgment was swift and severe (Hosea 6:5 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Therefore, I will certainly cut you into pieces at the hands of the prophets; I will certainly kill you in fulfillment of my oracles of judgment; for my judgment will come forth like the light of the dawn.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The time of judgment is about to arrive<\/em>, the Lord promised through Hosea.\u00a0 <em>The time of retribution is imminent!\u00a0 Let Israel know!\u00a0 The prophet is considered a fool \u2013 the inspired man is viewed as a madman \u2013 because of the multitude of your sins and your intense animosity<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/10\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-7\/#_ftn27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And it happened to them as He promised.\u00a0 But there is still hope for them (Hosea 11:8, 9 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>How can I give you up, O Ephraim?\u00a0 How can I surrender you, O Israel?\u00a0 How can I treat you like Admah?\u00a0 How can I make you like Zeboiim?\u00a0 I have had a change of heart!\u00a0 All my tender compassions are aroused <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/22\/davids-forgiveness-part-8\/#_Table29\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>! \u00a0I cannot carry out my fierce anger!\u00a0 I cannot totally destroy Ephraim!\u00a0 Because I am God, and not man \u2013 the Holy One among you \u2013 I will not come in wrath!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This sounds like grace, God\u2019s unilateral decision, not something effected in any way by the punishment of death the inhabitants of the northern kingdom of Israel suffered.\u00a0 It seems to me then that the failure of punishment to purge wickedness, evil, violence and sinfulness in the living is part of the justification for God\u2019s unilateral grace<em>: <\/em><em>Let God be proven true, and every human being shown up as a liar, just as it is written:<\/em> \u201c<em><strong>so that you will be justified in your words and will prevail when you are judged<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<a id=\"_stroke\"><\/a>As I worked on this essay my daughter suffered a stroke.\u00a0 That is definitely things not going my way.\u00a0 When I had the chance to consider if God was punishing her, me, or us for something, praying that her sins have more to do with me and mine than hers, making no real sense, just a jumble of thoughts\u2026take it out on me not her\u2026the Holy Spirit brought Scripture to my mind:\u00a0 <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 <em>Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cNeither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.\u201d<\/em><a
