Therefore love (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) is the fulfillment of the law.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> Knowledge puffs up, but love (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) builds up.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"213\">Love width=\"213\">Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, arrived in Ephesus.\u00a0 He was an eloquent speaker, well-versed in the scriptures.\u00a0 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm (\u03b6\u03ad\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03b6\u03ad\u03c9) he spoke and taught accurately the facts about Jesus (KJV: <em>the Lord<\/em>), although he knew only the baptism of John.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/td>\n<td width=\"213\">Slaves, obey your human masters with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart as to Christ, not like those who do their work only when someone is watching \u2013 as people-pleasers \u2013 but as slaves of Christ doing the will of God from the heart.\u00a0 Obey with enthusiasm (\u03b5\u1f50\u03bd\u03bf\u03af\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b5\u1f54\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\">\u03b5\u1f54\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>), as though serving (\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2) the Lord and not people, because you know that each person, whether slave or free, if he does something good (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>), this will be rewarded by the Lord.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/18\/romans-part-52\/\">previous essay<\/a> it seemed to make intuitive sense to place <em>cling to what is good<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>under that aspect of the fruit of the Spirit translated <em>goodness<\/em>.\u00a0 Here it may seem like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nizkor.org\/features\/fallacies\/begging-the-question.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">begging the question<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> to simply place\u2014<em>Do not lag in zeal, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord<\/em>\u2014under <em>love<\/em>.\u00a0 In one sense <em>love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) is the master key that can stand for all aspects of the fruit of the Spirit.\u00a0 I think John used \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 that way often, but I want to follow Paul\u2019s thinking here.<\/p>\n<p><em>Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), he wrote.\u00a0 By our own faith?\u00a0 I think not, for <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> is an aspect of the fruit of the Spirit.\u00a0 Since <em>we have been declared righteous by faith<\/em> <em>we have peace<\/em> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>) <em>with God through our Lord Jesus Christ<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Again, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peace<\/a><\/em> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7) is an aspect of the fruit of his Spirit.\u00a0 Through our Lord Jesus Christ <em>we have also obtained access by faith<\/em> (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2) <em>into this grace<\/em> (\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2) <em>in which we stand<\/em>.\u00a0 And by <em>grace<\/em>, though Paul may mean more, I think he cannot mean less than the credited righteousness of God, this very fruit of God\u2019s Holy Spirit.\u00a0 And we rejoice in the hope of our glory!\u00a0 But that\u2019s not what Paul wrote.\u00a0 And <em>we rejoice<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ce\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <em>in the hope of God\u2019s glory<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though the NET translators chose <em>rejoice<\/em> for \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ce\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1 here and in the next verse, <em>boast<\/em> is a more obvious meaning.\u00a0 <em>I say again, let no one think that I am a fool. \u00a0But if you do, then at least accept me as a fool, so that I too may<\/em> <em>boast<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <em>a little. \u00a0What I am saying with this boastful<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03cd\u03c7\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03cd\u03c7\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>confidence I do not say the way the Lord would. \u00a0Instead it is, as it were, foolishness. \u00a0Since many are boasting<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u1ff6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <em>according to human standards, I too will boast<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 By the way, <em>according to human standards<\/em> is \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70 \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03ba\u03b1 in Greek, <em>according to the flesh<\/em> (NKJV).<\/p>\n<p>It gives me the sense that Paul meant we boast <em>in the hope of God\u2019s glory<\/em>.\u00a0 We boast in the hope that God will be glorified by the lives we live in the flesh (not according to the flesh), <em>crucified with Christ<\/em> (<em>it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me<\/em>),<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a> living <em>by the Spirit<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> not by the <em>works of the flesh<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Translated that way we might be less likely to gloss over it and <em>boast<\/em> in the hope of our own glory.\u00a0 <em>Not only this, <\/em>Paul continued,<em> but we also rejoice<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ce\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9; or, <em>boast<\/em>) <em>in sufferings<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So where does Paul get off writing this wacko stuff?<\/p>\n<p><em>If I must boast<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9), <em>I will boast<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <em>about the things that show my weakness <\/em>(\u1f00\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03c3\u03b8\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03b8\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0There was method to Paul\u2019s madness.\u00a0 For the Lord said to him, <em>\u201cMy grace is enough for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u1fb3)<em>.\u201d So then<\/em>, Paul concluded, <em>I will boast<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <em>most gladly about my weaknesses <\/em>(\u1f00\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03b9\u03c2)<em>, so that the power of Christ may reside in me<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And in Romans we find a similar method to his madness: <em>we also rejoice<\/em> (or, <em>boast<\/em>) <em>in sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance, character, and character, hope<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And here I get a beautiful glimmer of an understanding why the NET translators chose <em>rejoice<\/em> over <em>boast<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_joy\"><\/a>We don\u2019t <em>rejoice<\/em> or <em>boast<\/em> in our own suffering because of a rational understanding: <em>knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance, character, and character, hope<\/em>.\u00a0 We can only <em>rejoice<\/em> or <em>boast<\/em> in our own suffering because we are filled with the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joy<\/a><\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\">\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f70<\/a>) of God, another aspect of the fruit of his Spirit.\u00a0 And <em>rejoice<\/em> hearkens back to that fact better than <em>boast<\/em> ever could.\u00a0 I am confident they chose <em>rejoice<\/em> for this reason because of a note on the next verse.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_fulfillment\"><\/a><em>And hope does not disappoint<\/em>, Paul concluded, <em>because the love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) <em>of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+5:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">note<\/a> in the NET reads: \u201cThe phrase \u1f21 \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 (&#8230;\u2018the love of God\u2019) could be interpreted as either an objective genitive (\u2018our love for God\u2019), subjective genitive (\u2018God\u2019s love for us\u2019), or both (M. Zerwick\u2019s \u2018general\u2019 genitive [<em>Biblical Greek<\/em>,\u00a7\u00a736-39]; D. B. Wallace\u2019s \u2018plenary\u2019 genitive [<em>ExSyn<\/em> 119-21]). The immediate context, which discusses what God has done for believers, favors a subjective genitive, but the fact that this love is poured out within the hearts of believers implies that it may be the source for believers\u2019 love for God; consequently an objective genitive cannot be ruled out. It is possible that both these ideas are meant in the text and that this is a plenary genitive: \u2018The love that comes from God and that produces our love for God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us\u2019 (<em>ExSyn<\/em> 121).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here is one place I can say with confidence the NET translators really got what Paul was saying.\u00a0 This <em>love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7), which <em>has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us<\/em>, <em>does no wrong<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd) <em>to a neighbor.\u00a0 Therefore love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) <em>is the fulfillment <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of the law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Pouring this love <em>out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us<\/em> is what Jesus meant when He said: <em>Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.\u00a0 I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>, the verb from which the noun \u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1 is derived) <em>them<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I want to spend some time with \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd (a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2) since this \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 <em>does<\/em> (or, <em>works<\/em>) <em>no wrong<\/em> (or, <em>harm<\/em>) <em>to a neighbor<\/em>.\u00a0 The first time \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd occurs in the New Testament was from the mouth of the Roman governor.\u00a0 <em>Pilate said to them, \u201cThen what should I do with Jesus who is called the Christ?\u201d\u00a0 They all said, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d \u00a0He asked, \u201cWhy? What wrong<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd) <em>has he done?\u201d But they shouted more insistently, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Though Pilate found no \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd in Him under Roman law the chief priests and elders of Israel had accused Him of many things: <em>\u201cDon\u2019t you hear how many charges they are bringing against you?\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a> Pilate asked.\u00a0 When Jesus <em>was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not respond<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, with 20-20 hindsight I can see Jesus consciously fulfilling Scripture: <em>He was treated harshly and afflicted, but he did not even open his mouth.\u00a0 Like a lamb led to the slaughtering block, like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not even open his mouth<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn29\"><sup>[29]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 At the time in the moment, however, He appeared obstinate, belligerent and disdainful of authority.\u00a0 Consider his teaching (Matthew 23:1-12 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, \u201cThe experts in the law and the Pharisees sit on Moses\u2019 seat. \u00a0Therefore pay attention to what they tell you and do it. \u00a0But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they teach. \u00a0They tie up heavy loads, hard to carry, and put them on men\u2019s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing even to lift a finger to move them. \u00a0They do all their deeds to be seen by people, for they make their phylacteries wide and their tassels long. \u00a0They love the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces, and to have people call them \u2018Rabbi.\u2019 \u00a0But you are not to be called \u2018Rabbi,\u2019 for you have one Teacher and you are all brothers. \u00a0And call said, <em>to love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b5, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) <em>one another just as I have loved<\/em> (\u1f20\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9) <em>you. \u00a0No one has greater love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) <em>than this \u2013 that one lays down his life for his friends. \u00a0You are my friends if you do what I command<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <em>you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Hanging on the cross, after thirty plus years of human experience, eating it, drinking it, pissing and shitting it, Jesus prayed what I consider the real prayer of salvation: <em>Father, forgive them, for they don\u2019t know what they are doing.<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My point here, I suppose, is that the love that <em>does<\/em> (or, <em>works<\/em>) <em>no wrong<\/em> (or, <em>harm<\/em>) <em>to a neighbor<\/em> may not always appear to all the people all the time to be <em>doing<\/em> or <em>working<\/em> no <em>wrong<\/em> or <em>harm to a neighbor<\/em>.\u00a0 By his own admission Jesus\u2019 death on a cross was not his will but his Father\u2019s.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn32\"><sup>[32]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Like most human beings Jesus wanted to live; <em>whoever is among the living has hope; a live dog is better than a dead lion<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn33\"><sup>[33]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Perhaps I\u2019ve overstated the case.\u00a0 Jesus was not suicidal as He hung on the cross.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_death\"><\/a>I want to follow this just a bit farther (Luke 16:25 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Abraham said, \u2018Child, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things <em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03ac, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em> and Lazarus likewise bad things <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03ac, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em>, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_nonsense\"><\/a>When I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/05\/03\/torture-part-5\/\">considered this<\/a> in the light of the gospel I gleaned from my religion,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn34\"><sup>[34]<\/sup><\/a> Abraham\u2019s words seemed like karmic nonsense.\u00a0 But in the light of the knowledge of God I\u2019m compelled to reconsider.\u00a0 <em>God is love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn35\"><sup>[35]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) <em>does no wrong<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2) <em>to a neighbor<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn36\"><sup>[36]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 (And this is \u03bf\u1f50\u03ba the absolute negation, modifying \u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 [a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>] apparently not \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd.)\u00a0 So while I might be intellectually stimulated to wonder what role God\u2019s love played in Lazarus\u2019 life, the Holy Spirit reminds me that <em>Knowledge <\/em><em>puffs up<\/em><em>, <\/em><em>but <\/em><em>love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7) <em>builds up<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn37\"><sup>[37]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 All in all it is simpler then to assume that God\u2019s love was revealed after Lazarus\u2019 death.\u00a0 This is in accord with Jesus\u2019 knowledge of God: <em>he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live before him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/23\/romans-part-53\/#_ftn38\"><sup>[38]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And it is prudent to accept that I do not dictate when God reveals his love to anyone (or, <em>in<\/em> anyone for that matter).<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll continue looking into\u2014<em>Do not lag in zeal, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord<\/em>\u2014as a definition
