Do not judge<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) so that you will not be judged<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9),1<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount.\u00a0 Coupled with the next statement\u2014For by the standard<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) you judge<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, a form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) you will be judged<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9), and the measure<\/em> (\u03bc\u1f73\u03c4\u03c1\u1ff3<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03bc\u03ad\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) you use <\/em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) will be the measure<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>,\u00a0another form of\u00a0\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) you receive<\/em>2<\/sup><\/a>\u2014I thought of this as an example of Jesus\u2019 pragmatism when dealing with others.\u00a0 The footnote in the NET indicates that it is God (rather than others) who will do the judging<\/em> and measuring<\/em> according to my judgments<\/em> and measurements<\/em> of others.<\/p>\n

Here in this context of the Gospel and the mind of Christ, it seems more like an ultimate challenge to my religious mind, any religious mind.\u00a0 For what is religion without judgment?\u00a0 How can I tell who is on the bus<\/em><\/a> if I don\u2019t judge them?\u00a0 In the book of Acts a young man named Saul<\/a><\/em> is introduced as one who though he did not participate directly agreed completely with<\/a><\/em> the stoning of Stephen<\/a>, a follower of Jesus.<\/p>\n

Saul was trying to destroy the church; entering one house after another, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison<\/em>.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Saul had not set out to be evil and a persecutor of the innocent.\u00a0 He thought he was serving God, arresting the guilty, judging and condemning them, according to his conscience and his understanding of his religion.\u00a0 Saul, still breathing out threats to murder the Lord\u2019s disciples, went to the high priest and requested letters from him to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, either men or women, he could bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem<\/em>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But as it happened, Saul was arrested instead (Acts 9:3-17 NET).<\/p>\n

As he was going along, approaching Damascus, suddenly5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>a light from6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>heaven flashed around him. \u00a0He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, \u201cSaul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?\u201d \u00a0So he said, \u201cWho are you, Lord?\u201d He replied,7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u201cI am Jesus whom you are persecuting!8<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0But9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>stand up and enter the city and you will be told what you must do.\u201d \u00a0(Now the men who were traveling with him stood there speechless,10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>because they heard the voice but saw no one.) \u00a0So Saul11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>got up from the ground, but although his eyes were open, he could see nothing.12<\/sup><\/a> <\/em> Leading him by the hand, his companions brought him into Damascus. \u00a0For three days he could not see, and he neither ate nor drank anything.<\/p>\n

Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias.\u00a0 The Lord said to him in a vision, \u201cAnanias,\u201d and he replied, \u201cHere I am, Lord.\u201d \u00a0Then the Lord told him, \u201cGet up and go to the street called \u2018Straight,\u2019 and at Judas\u2019 house look for a man from Tarsus named Saul.\u00a0 For he is praying, and he has seen in a vision13<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>a man named Ananias come in and place his hands14<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>on him so that he may see again.\u201d \u00a0But Ananias15<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>replied, \u201cLord, I have heard16<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>from many people about this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem, and here he has authority from the chief priests to imprison all who call on your name!\u201d \u00a0But the Lord said to him, \u201cGo, because this man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before Gentiles and17<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>kings and the people of Israel. \u00a0For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.\u201d \u00a0So Ananias departed and entered the house, placed his hands on Saul and said, \u201cBrother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came here, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Eventually Saul became known as Paul the Apostle.\u00a0 His journey from the violent judgment of his religious mind to perhaps the chief explicator of the Gospel and the mind of Christ in the New Testament is where I will turn my attention next.<\/p>\n
