Jesus said, Do not judge <\/em>(\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) so that you will not be judged <\/em>(\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9).\u00a0 For by the standard<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) you judge<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5,a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) you will be judged<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9), and the measure<\/em> (\u03bc\u1f73\u03c4\u03c1\u1ff3<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) you use <\/em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) will be the measure<\/a><\/em> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) you receive.<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

In my opinion Paul\u2019s religious mind<\/em> wrote, For even though I am absent<\/em>2<\/sup><\/a> physically, I am present in spirit. \u00a0And I have already judged <\/em>(\u03ba\u1f73\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) the one who did this, just as though I were present<\/em>.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul was speaking about a man rumored to have<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) his father\u2019s wife.\u00a0 (The NET translated the word\u00a0\u1f14\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd cohabiting with<\/em>,4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0rendering \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a> in this passage<\/a> as adultery<\/em>, incest<\/em> or a violation of Leviticus 20:115<\/sup><\/a> rather than idolatrous worship <\/em>[including its drunken sexual practices<\/a>].)<\/p>\n

My reasons for calling this Paul\u2019s religious mind<\/em> are as follows: 1) the fact that Paul gave evidence of knowing Jesus\u2019 command (1 Corinthians 4:5 NET):<\/p>\n

So then, do not judge (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> anything before the time.\u00a0 Wait until the Lord comes.\u00a0 He will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the motives of hearts.\u00a0 Then each will receive recognition from God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

2) his own rhetorical justification sounds spurious (1 Corinthians 5:12, 13 NET) when contrasted to Jesus\u2019 teaching.<\/p>\n

For what do I6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>have to do with judging (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> those outside?\u00a0 Are you not to judge (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> those inside? \u00a0But God will judge (\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em> those outside.\u00a0 Remove7<\/sup><\/a> the evil person from among you<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here is Jesus\u2019 teaching on the subject (Luke 6:37, 38 NET [Table<\/a>]):<\/p>\n

Do not judge (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, and you will not be judged (\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em>; do8<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>not condemn (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, and you will not be condemned (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em>; forgive<\/a> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f7b\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, and you will be forgiven (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03c5\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em>. \u00a0Give, and it will be given to you: \u00a0A good measure (\u03bc\u1f73\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em>, pressed down, shaken9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>together, running over,10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>will be poured into your lap.\u00a0 For the11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>measure (\u03bc\u1f73\u03c4\u03c1\u1ff3<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd)<\/em> you use (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>will be the12<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>measure you receive (\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I find it hard to believe that Jesus intended this graciousness for outsiders only and not for those who believed.\u00a0 The presumed answer to Paul\u2019s rhetorical question\u2014Are you not to judge those inside?<\/em>\u2014is not sufficient to alter my belief.<\/p>\n

3) Paul later forgave the sinner and urged the Corinthians to do likewise after they had shunned him (2 Corinthians 2:5-8 NET):<\/p>\n

But if anyone has caused sadness, he has not saddened me alone, but13<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>to some extent (not to exaggerate) he has saddened all of you as well. \u00a0This punishment on such an individual by the majority is enough for him, so that now instead you should rather forgive (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>and comfort (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f73\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>him.\u00a0 This will keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive grief to the point of despair. \u00a0Therefore I urge (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1ff6<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> you to reaffirm your love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) <\/em>for him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

4) Paul altered his original justification for judging the man and commanding that he be shunned (2 Corinthians 2:9-11 and 7:11, 12 NET):<\/p>\n

For this reason also I wrote you: to test (\u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b9\u03bc\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b9\u03bc\u03ae<\/a>;\u00a0literally, \u03b3\u03bd\u1ff6<\/a> \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd \u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b9\u03bc\u1f74\u03bd, “know” or “learn by testing”)\u00a0<\/em>you to see if you are obedient (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f75\u03ba\u03bf\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>in everything. \u00a0If you forgive (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> anyone for anything, I also forgive him \u2013 for indeed what14<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>I have forgiven (\u03ba\u03b5\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> (if I have forgiven [\u03ba\u03b5\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9]<\/em> anything) I did so for you in the presence of Christ, so that we may not be exploited by Satan (for we are not ignorant of his schemes)\u2026
\nFor see what this very thing, this sadness15<\/sup><\/a> [caused by Paul\u2019s original letter, cf. 2 Corinthians 7:8<\/a>]<\/em> as God intended, has produced (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, what16<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>punishment!\u00a0 In17<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. \u00a0So then, even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of18<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the one who did wrong (\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, or on account of19<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the one who was wronged (\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7\u03b8\u1f73\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>, but20<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>to reveal to you your eagerness on our behalf before God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

5) Paul later developed a more appropriate way for dealing with similar situations, something more in line with Jesus\u2019 teaching (Galatians 6:1-5 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

Brothers and sisters, if a person is discovered in some sin<\/a> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, you who are spiritual restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness.21<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0Pay close attention to yourselves, so that you are not tempted too. \u00a0Carry one another\u2019s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill<\/a> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>the law of Christ. \u00a0For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. \u00a0Let each one examine (\u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03b6\u1f73\u03c4\u03c9<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>his own work (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em>.\u00a0 Then he can take pride in himself and not compare himself with someone else. \u00a0For each one will carry his own load.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What happened to Paul between the writing of 1 Corinthians 5 and Galatians 6?\u00a0 The obvious answer is an affliction that happened to us<\/em>33<\/sup><\/a> in the province of Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of living<\/em>.34<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But something else probably occurred as well, the crystallization of the understanding that became, and the actual writing of, Paul\u2019s letter to the Romans.<\/p>\n

\nWhen you gather together in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of our Lord Jesus, turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord<\/em> (1 Corinthians 5:4, 5 NET). I was bothered most by hand\u00a0this man\u00a0over\u00a0to\u00a0Satan\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0destruction\u00a0of the\u00a0flesh<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u1fb7<\/a> \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u1f44\u03bb\u03b5\u03b8\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>). Now, I wonder if Paul had in mind something like<\/a>: God sends on them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false<\/em> (2 Thessalonians 2:11 NET).<\/p>\n

When this happened to me<\/a>, I thought of it as my own idea, even an inescapable conclusion, that God was not. If I had been cast out in some formal ceremony, handed over to Satan, I’m afraid I would have responded like Canaan to Noah’s curse<\/a> rather than finding the end of myself and seeking some remedy for my sinfulness.<\/p>\n
