Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Revisiting an essay\u2014<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/24\/davids-forgiveness-part-1\/\">David\u2019s Forgiveness, Part 1<\/a><\/em>\u2014I realized I had put an inordinate emphasis on the word <em>forgiven<\/em> without looking into the meaning of the original Hebrew word.\u00a0 My suspicion of Bible translators feels at times like a paranoid schizophrenic\u2019s fear of the CIA. \u00a0Lapses like this one renew my appreciation for the maxim, \u201cJust because you&#8217;re paranoid doesn&#8217;t mean they aren&#8217;t after you.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This essay could be very short.\u00a0 I could simply say that Nathan actually responded to David\u2019s confession with the words, <em>Yes, and the Lord has<\/em> passed over<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bd\u00e2bar\">\u02bd\u00e2bar<\/a><\/em>) <em>your sin.\u00a0 You are not going to die<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Such a translation would agree with Paul\u2019s assessment of God\u2019s past actions: <em>God in his forbearance had passed over<\/em> (\u03c0\u03ac\u03c1\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03ac\u03c1\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2\">\u03c0\u03ac\u03c1\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>the sins previously committed<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I could simply accept the text at face value, that <em>\u02bd\u00e2bar<\/em> is not forgiveness and God is free to exact whatever penalty He chooses.<\/p>\n<p>It seems like an ironclad argument.\u00a0 But five of the twelve Bibles I checked translate <em>\u02bd\u00e2bar<\/em> in 2 Samuel 12:13 <em>forgiven<\/em> or <em>forgives<\/em>.\u00a0 Of the remaining seven four have it <em>put away<\/em>, two are <em>taken away<\/em>, and one, <em>Jehovah hath caused thy sin to pass away<\/em>. \u00a0How different is that from <em>forgiven<\/em> really?<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">YLT<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a id=\"_mistaken\"><\/a>Do the translators believe that this is all I should expect\u00a0from the forgiveness God exalted Jesus to give to Israel?\u00a0 <em>God exalted him to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness<\/em> (\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2\">\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>of sins<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Apparently a primary verb <em>to forgive <\/em>is as absent from holy Hebrew as it is from pagan Greek.\u00a0 The concept <em>to forgive<\/em> is either shoehorned into, or extrapolated from, other verbs in both languages.\u00a0 [Addendum 2\/14\/2018: This is wrong regarding Hebrew: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/14\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-5\/\">s\u00e2lach<\/a><\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_s\u00e2lach\">\u05e1\u05dc\u05d7<\/a>).]\u00a0 That gives me cause to study <em>\u02bd\u00e2bar<\/em> in more detail to get a feel for its capacity to carry forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>I had the opportunity to go home for a month at Christmas.\u00a0 <em>Home<\/em> is a relative concept.\u00a0 I alternated between my mother\u2019s house visiting her, my sister and her husband, and my ex-mother-in-law\u2019s house about a hundred miles north visiting her, my kids, my ex-wife and her husband.\u00a0 The day after I arrived I attended my son\u2019s wedding.<\/p>\n<p>We all sat in the front row.\u00a0 I offered the seat next to our ex-wife to my son\u2019s biological father.\u00a0 He declined the offer and sat next to me.\u00a0 (Her current husband sat on her other side.)\u00a0 He is about two years from a painful break-up with his significant other.\u00a0 He leaned over and whispered to me, \u201cI don\u2019t know how you do it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I could sit next to my ex, smiling, at her son\u2019s wedding.\u201d\u00a0 He gave me the opportunity to say that I couldn\u2019t take the credit, that it is not my doing so much as my getting out of the way of the Lord\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doing<\/a>: his love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and firm control.\u00a0 He received it well and acknowledged that he was seeking a similar peace.<\/p>\n<p>Later, in a phone conversation with another friend who questioned me more specifically about the fruit of the Spirit, I acknowledged that sadly the Lord\u2019s love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and gentleness aren\u2019t always my first impulse.\u00a0 Sometimes letting the fruit of his Spirit shine through me is a matter of waiting in that firm control until the second, third or fourth impulse holds sway.\u00a0 But as I think of it now there is something else that makes friendship with my ex-wife possible.<\/p>\n<p>I forgave her for divorcing me.\u00a0 I forgive her every night I go to bed alone and every morning I wake up.\u00a0 And I will forgive her for as long as we both shall live.\u00a0 <em>\u201cI hate divorce,\u201d says the Lord God of Israel<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I don\u2019t forgive her because I am so righteous.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus taught us to pray, <em>forgive<\/em> (\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9\">\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) <em>us our debts, as we ourselves have <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote1sym\">forgiven<\/a><\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u03ae\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) <em>our debtors<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I, a sinful man in need of the Father\u2019s forgiveness, pray this daily, and I believe Jesus\u2019 saying: <em>For if you forgive<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) <em>others their sins<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>), <em>your heavenly Father will also forgive<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) <em>you. \u00a0But if you do not forgive<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote2sym\">others<\/a>, your Father will not forgive<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) <em>you your sins<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here I probably give myself too much credit for rational consistency.\u00a0 I forgive because I am schooled in this teaching by the Holy Spirit and filled continuously with his love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and firm control.\u00a0 It occurs to me, however, that one who feels more righteous than I, might feel less need of the Father\u2019s forgiveness and less compulsion to forgive others.\u00a0 The fault in this logic is that the most righteous man of all prayed, <em>Father, forgive<\/em> (\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) <em>them, for they don\u2019t know what they are doing<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> as He surrendered<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a> to his Father\u2019s will.<\/p>\n<p>The Father\u2019s answer to his beloved Son\u2019s request is the hope of all us sinners if <em>it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote13sym\">mercy<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u1ff6\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 <em>For God has consigned all people to disobedience <\/em>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) <em>so that he may show mercy<\/em> (\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9) <em>to them all<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>What shall we say then?\u00a0 Is there injustice with God?\u00a0 Absolutely not! \u00a0For he says to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote12sym\">Moses<\/a>: <\/em>\u201c<strong><em>I will have mercy <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ae\u03c3\u03c9, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9) <em>on<strong> whom I have mercy <\/strong><\/em>(\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u1ff6, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9)<em>, <strong>and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Greek word <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f61\u03c2\">\u1f61\u03c2<\/a> persuades me that forgiveness is, and will be perceived as, a relative as opposed to an absolute concept.\u00a0 <em>So then, be perfect, as<\/em> (\u1f61\u03c2) <em>your heavenly Father is perfect<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Whenever <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/15\/romans-part-12\/#sdfootnote4sym\">you pray<\/a>, do not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/15\/romans-part-12\/#sdfootnote5sym\">be<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/15\/romans-part-12\/#sdfootnote6sym\">like<\/a><\/em> (\u1f61\u03c2) <em>the hypocrites<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u2026<em>may your will be done on earth as<\/em> (\u1f61\u03c2) <em>it is in heaven<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u2026<em>and forgive us our debts, as <\/em>(\u1f61\u03c2) <em>we ourselves have forgiven our debtors<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The absolute on\/off positions are clear.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But some form of continuum from none to full pardon seems to be indicated by \u1f61\u03c2, contingent upon that quality of forgiveness we extend to others.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I would suggest that we will be inclined to extend the same forgiveness to others that we believe we receive from God.\u00a0 If that forgiveness seems to include punishment we are more likely to believe that some form of punishment should be meted out with our forgiveness as well.\u00a0 Or if the one extending such forgiveness has no authority to punish, conditions may be attached, making forgiveness something that must be earned as opposed to something graciously given and received.\u00a0 I take the interaction between David and Shimei as a case in point.<\/p>\n<p>As David fled from Jerusalem during the events that fulfilled the Lord\u2019s promise <em>to bring disaster <\/em>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_ra\u02bd\">ra\u02bd<\/a><\/em> ) <em>on you from inside your own household<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> Shimei threw stones and yelled, <em>\u201cLeave!\u00a0 Leave!\u00a0 You man of bloodshed, you wicked man! \u00a0The Lord has punished<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_sh\u00fbb\">sh\u00fbb<\/a><\/em>) <em>you for all the spilled blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you rule. \u00a0Now the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. \u00a0<\/em><em>Disaster<\/em> (<em>ra\u02bd<\/em> ) <em>has overtaken you, for you are a man of bloodshed <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/28\/davids-forgiveness-part-9\/#_Table57\">Table<\/a>]<em>!\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Clearly, Shimei\u2019s <em>punished <\/em>(<em>sh\u00fbb<\/em>) is not found among the words the Lord God of Israel spoke through Nathan,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> though I have certainly interpreted them as if they described recompense.\u00a0 As a child I assumed that \u201cforgiveness\u201d only pertained to hell.\u00a0 I believed that God would still <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/\">punish<\/a> me for my sins some other way.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t help Himself, I thought, it\u2019s who He is.<\/p>\n<p>Abishai couldn\u2019t tolerate hearing his king and commander spoken to as Shimei had spoken to him: <em>Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king?\u00a0 Let me go over<\/em> (<em>\u02bd\u00e2bar<\/em>) <em>and cut off his head!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn22\" name=\"_ftnref22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Abishai\u2019s use of <em>\u02bd\u00e2bar<\/em> doesn\u2019t sound much like forgiveness, but David said, <em>\u201cWhat do we have in common, you sons of Zeruiah?\u00a0 If he curses because the Lord has said to him, \u2018Curse David!\u2019, who can say to him, \u2018Why have you done this <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/28\/davids-forgiveness-part-9\/#_Table59\">Table<\/a>]<em>?\u2019\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn23\" name=\"_ftnref23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 David exercised what I have come to call an <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/02\/jedidiah-part-2\/\">experimental faith<\/a> (2 Samuel 16:11, 12 NKJV):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And David said to Abishai and all his servants, \u201cSee how my son who came from my own body seeks my life.\u00a0 How much more now\u00a0<em>may this<\/em> Benjamite?\u00a0 Let him alone, and let him curse; for so the Lord has ordered him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/28\/davids-forgiveness-part-9\/#_Table61\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 It may be that the Lord will look on my affliction, and that the Lord will repay <em>(<\/em>sh\u00fbb<em>)<\/em> me with good for his cursing this day <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/28\/davids-forgiveness-part-9\/#_Table63\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As David returned, lamenting his Pyrrhic victory<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn24\" name=\"_ftnref24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a> over his son Absalom, Shimei was one of the first<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn25\" name=\"_ftnref25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a> to greet him.\u00a0 <em>Don\u2019t think badly of me, my lord<\/em>, he said, <em>and don\u2019t recall the sin of your servant on the day when you, my lord the king, left Jerusalem!\u00a0 Please don\u2019t call it to mind! \u00a0For I, your servant, know that I sinned, and I have come today as the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king<\/em>.<a my sin! <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/02\/jedidiah-part-2\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0For I am aware of my rebellious acts; I am forever conscious of my sin <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Abishai, who may have been hiding with David in the cave when Saul entered <em>to relieve himself<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn27\" name=\"_ftnref27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a> pursued a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/12\/22\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-6\/#_pious\">pious good<\/a> (possibly expecting David\u2019s approval): <em>For this should not Shimei be put to death?\u00a0 After all, he cursed the Lord\u2019s anointed<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_m\u00e2sh\u0131\u0302yach\">m\u00e2sh\u0131\u0302yach<\/a><\/em>)!<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn28\" name=\"_ftnref28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But David seemed to pursue something more like a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/12\/22\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-6\/#_beautiful\">beautiful good<\/a>: <em>What do we have in common, you sons of Zeruiah? \u00a0You are like my enemy today! \u00a0Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? \u00a0Don\u2019t you realize that today I am king over Israel?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn29\" name=\"_ftnref29\"><sup>[29]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>David said to Shimei, <em>\u201cYou won\u2019t die.\u201d\u00a0 The king vowed an oath concerning this<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn30\" name=\"_ftnref30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here it sounds like he forgave Shimei.\u00a0 But apparently that wasn\u2019t the case.\u00a0 He held onto his grudge against Shimei for the rest of his life.\u00a0 With his dying breath<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/#_ftn31\" name=\"_ftnref31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a> he instructed Solomon, another son by Bathsheba (1 Kings 2:8, 9 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Note well, you still have to contend with Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim, who tried to call down upon me a horrible judgment when I went to Mahanaim. \u00a0He came down and met me at the Jordan, and I solemnly promised him by the Lord, \u2018I will not strike you down with the sword.\u2019 \u00a0But now don\u2019t treat him as if he were innocent. \u00a0You are a wise man and you know how to handle him; make sure he has a bloody death.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Lord however didn\u2019t treat David that way.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t recall David\u2019s sin when He spoke to Jeroboams\u2019s wife by Ahijah the prophet (1 Kings 14:7, 8 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/12\/jedidiah-part-6\/#_Table35\">Table1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/12\/jedidiah-part-6\/#_Table37\">Table2<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cGo, tell Jeroboam, \u2018This is what the Lord God of Israel says: \u201cI raised you up from among the people and made you ruler over my people Israel. \u00a0I tore the kingdom away from the Davidic dynasty and gave it to you.
