Whether sin<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)1<\/sup><\/a> is less than sin<\/em> (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>),2<\/sup><\/a> was something I had to consider before concluding that 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 and Galatians 6:1-5 were covering the same subject matter<\/a>.\u00a0 I may not have ever connected the two in the King James translation of the Bible.\u00a0 Galatians 6:1 was about restoring a person overtaken in a<\/em> fault<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9, a form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1) in a spirit of meekness<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 A fault might be a crooked tie, or forgetting to take my hat off in the house.\u00a0 1 Corinthians 5:1 was about such fornication <\/em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) as is not so much as named <\/em>(\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f40\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) among the Gentiles<\/em>.\u00a0 The Greek word \u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (translated is named<\/em> in Ephesians 3:15 NET<\/a>) is not included in the text<\/a> of 1 Corinthians 5:1 from which the NET was translated.<\/p>\n

The difference between not permitted<\/em> (NET) and not so much as named<\/em> (KJV) is fairly significant.\u00a0 Teenagers in my State are not permitted<\/em> to drink alcohol.\u00a0 Teenagers doing chores without being asked, is not so much as named<\/em>.\u00a0 And if it is named the name is probably derogatory.\u00a0 The event is so rare that parents are suspicious what will come next (probably a request to do or have something that has already been forbidden).\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure what Paul and the Holy Spirit had in mind here.\u00a0 Was the \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 of 1 Corinthians 5:1 unlawful<\/em> among Gentiles, as it was among Jews, because it was committed frequently?\u00a0 Or was it so rare that little or no language existed to discuss it?\u00a0 I\u2019ll proceed as if either is true.<\/p>\n

A quick survey of Galatians is probably in order.\u00a0 The letter begins (Galatians 1:1-7 NET):<\/p>\n

From Paul, an apostle (not from men, nor by human agency, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised him from the dead) and all the brothers with me, to the churches of Galatia. \u00a0Grace and peace to you from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for3<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>our sins (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> to rescue us from this present evil age4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever! \u00a0Amen.<\/p>\n

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are following a different gospel \u2013 not that there really is another gospel, but there are some who are disturbing you and wanting to distort the gospel of Christ.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I am making the inference that circumcision was the form this desertion<\/em> took (Galatians 2:3-5 NET):<\/p>\n

Yet not even Titus, who was with me [in Jerusalem]<\/em>, was compelled to be circumcised, although he was a Greek (\u1f1d\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>). <\/em>\u00a0Now this matter arose because of the false brothers with false pretenses who slipped in unnoticed to spy on our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, to make us slaves.5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0But we did not surrender to them even for a moment, in order that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I am also inferring that (whether rightly or wrongly) the Galatians perceived that 1) Peter and James were behind this push to get Gentiles circumcised, or 2) at least were lending support or approval to such a movement (Galatians 2:11-14 NET).<\/p>\n

But when Cephas6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he had clearly done wrong. \u00a0Until certain people came from James, he had been eating with the Gentiles.\u00a0 But when they arrived, he stopped doing this and separated himself because he was afraid of those who were pro-circumcision. \u00a0And the rest of the Jews also joined with him in this hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led astray with them by their hypocrisy (\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>).7<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u00a0But when I saw that they were not behaving consistently with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas8<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>in front of them all, \u201cIf you, although you are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>like a Jew, how10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>can you try to force the Gentiles to live like Jews?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then Paul essentially paraphrased Peter\u2019s address during the Jerusalem Council<\/a> that had dealt with this issue (Galatians 2:15, 16 NET Table<\/a>).<\/p>\n

We are Jews by birth and not Gentile (\u1f10\u03b8\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>sinners (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bb\u03bf\u03af<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, yet11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>we know that no one is justified by the works of the law but by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by the faithfulness of Christ and not by the works of the law, because<\/a> by the works of the law no one will be justified.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Comparing these side by side it is not too difficult to see that Peter might feel himself caught between a rock and a hard place with Paul and James.\u00a0 Also it is not hard to imagine that James would have been slow to warm to Paul\u2019s contention\u2014so infuriating to religious minds\u2014because by the works of the law no one will be justified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\nAccording to a note (54<\/a>) in the NET, Acts 15:16, 17 was a quotation from Amos 9:11, 12 (Table1<\/a> below).\u00a0 The note continued:<\/p>\n

James demonstrated a high degree of cultural sensitivity when he cited a version of the text (the Septuagint [Table2<\/a> and Table3<\/a> below], the Greek translation of the Old Testament) that Gentiles would use.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019m willing to argue that these represent two independent translations of the Hebrew, and that the cultural insensitivity of the Masoretic text was not original.\u00a0 Given that the extant manuscripts<\/a> of the New Testament and the Septuagint are far older than those of the Masoretic text, the onus falls on those who favor the Masoretic text to demonstrate that James\u2019 quotation recorded in Acts, and the Septuagint, are not original, and that the cultural insensitivity of the Masoretic text was the Holy Spirit\u2019s original intent.<\/p>\n

Another note (56<\/a>) in the NET claimed that the latter part of James\u2019 quotation was an allusion to Isaiah 45:21 (Table4<\/a> and Table5<\/a> below).\u00a0 I\u2019ve compared the Septuagint to James\u2019 words in Acts to highlight their many differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
