href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> argument \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.endtime-prophets.com\/noproph.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why there are no Apostles today<\/a>\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The apostles claimed to be eyewitnesses: \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 5:32, Peter and the other apostles stated, &#8220;We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Therefore, ALLLLLLL the apostles were eye witnesses to Christ and his Resurrection.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the surface of it the structure of the sentence in Acts 5:32\u2014<em>we are<\/em>\u2026<em>and so is<\/em>\u2014doesn\u2019t sound like the kind of exclusive claim Ms. Eldridge wants to make of it.\u00a0 But I want to address something else first; namely, <em>the Holy Spirit whom God has given <\/em>(\u1f14\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9\">\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) <em>to those who obey<\/em> <em>him.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The note in the NET reads:\u00a0 \u201c<em>Those who obey.<\/em> \u00a0The implication, of course, is that the leadership is disobeying God.\u201d\u00a0 What I object to is the implication that the Holy Spirit has been given as a result of human \u201cobedience.\u201d\u00a0 And I don\u2019t think Peter was at fault here.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek word translated <em>obey<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) is a combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A primary verb; to\u00a0<\/em>convince<em> (by argument, true or false); by analogy to\u00a0<\/em>pacify<em> or\u00a0<\/em>conciliate<em> (by other fair means); reflexively or passively to\u00a0<\/em>assent <em>(to evidence or authority), to\u00a0<\/em>rely<em> (by inward certainty)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>NET: 1) persuade 1a) to persuade, i.e. to induce one by words to believe 1b) to make friends of, to win one&#8217;s favour, gain one&#8217;s good will, or to seek to win one, strive to please one 1c) to tranquillise 1d) to persuade unto i.e. move or induce one to persuasion to do something 2) be persuaded 2a) to be persuaded, to suffer one&#8217;s self to be persuaded; to be induced to believe: to have faith: in a thing 2a1) to believe 2a2) to be persuaded of a thing concerning a person 2b) to listen to, obey, yield to, comply with 3) to trust, have confidence, be confident<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f04\u03c1\u03c7\u03c9\">\u1f04\u03c1\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A primary verb; to be\u00a0<\/em>first<em> (in political rank or power)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>NET: 1) to be chief, to lead, to rule.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is a reference back to Peter\u2019s response to the council and the high priest<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>: <em>We must obey<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03ad\u03c9) <em>God rather than people<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And he said this as he refused to heed or be persuaded by the highest religious authority in Israel: <em>We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Had \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd\u00a0\u03b4\u03b5\u1fd6\u00a0\u03b8\u03b5\u1ff7 been translated \u201cwe must trust God as leader\u201d and \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd\u00a0\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1ff7 as \u201ctrust him as leader\u201d we would have a better translation of Peter\u2019s point without inducing him to propound a false concept. \u00a0And the Holy Spirit would be <em>seen<\/em> as the cause of human obedience rather than a reward for good behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The structure of Ms. Eldridge\u2019s argument is: The apostles claimed to be eyewitnesses in Acts 5:32, therefore all the apostles were eye witnesses to Christ and his Resurrection (and none other than eye witnesses can be apostles).\u00a0 This argument depends on equating eyewitnesses (\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1f79\u03c0\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03cc\u03c0\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03cc\u03c0\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>) with <em>witnesses<\/em> (\u03bc\u1f71\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03b5\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bc\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c2\">\u03bc\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>) <em>of these things<\/em> (\u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1\">\u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>; NET <em>events<\/em>).\u00a0 These <em>things<\/em> (NIV) or <em>events<\/em> (NET) are specified: <em>The God of our forefathers raised up Jesus, whom you seized and killed by hanging him on a tree.\u00a0 God exalted him to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, translating \u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd as <em>things<\/em> or <em>events<\/em> makes the relationship to \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1f79\u03c0\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 seem strong, and makes \u03bc\u1f71\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03b5\u03c2 seem exclusive to that generation.\u00a0 <em>You killed the Originator<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c1\u03c7\u03b7\u03b3\u1f78\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03c1\u03c7\u03b7\u03b3\u03cc\u03c2\">\u1f00\u03c1\u03c7\u03b7\u03b3\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <em>of life<\/em>, Peter said elsewhere, <em>whom God raised<\/em> (\u1f24\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f10\u03b3\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03b3\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>) <em>from the dead. \u00a0To this fact <\/em>(\u03bf\u1f57, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f45\u03c2\">\u1f45\u03c2<\/a>) <em>we are witnesses<\/em> (\u03bc\u1f71\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u03bc\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c2)!<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The apostles saw Jesus <em>seized and killed by hanging him on a tree<\/em>.\u00a0 If Peter meant raised from the dead by <em>The God of our forefathers raised up<\/em> <em>Jesus<\/em>, the apostles certainly saw Jesus after his resurrection.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But if he meant <em>God exalted him to his right hand as Leader <\/em>\u00a0<em>and Savior<\/em>, was that something they saw with their eyes (Hebrews 2:6b-9 NET)?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<strong><em>What is man that you think of him or the son of man that you care for him?<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0<strong><em>You made him lower than the angels for a little while.<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0<strong><em>You crowned him with glory and honor<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em> \u00a0<strong><em>You put all things under his control<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 For when he <strong><em>put all things under his control<\/em><\/strong>, he left nothing outside of his control. \u00a0At present we do not yet see <em>(\u1f41\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f41\u03c1\u03ac\u03c9\">\u1f41\u03c1\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> <strong><em>all things under his control<\/em><\/strong>, but we see <em>(\u03b2\u03bb\u1f73\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b2\u03bb\u03ad\u03c0\u03c9\">\u03b2\u03bb\u03ad\u03c0\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> Jesus, who was made <strong><em>lower than the angels for a little while<\/em><\/strong>, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by God\u2019s grace he would experience death on behalf of everyone.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t think we are meant to take <em>we see Jesus<\/em> as proof that the letter to the Hebrews was penned before Jesus\u2019 ascension.\u00a0 The apostles did see Jesus <em>taken up<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b5\u03bb\u1f75\u03bc\u03c6\u03b8\u03b7, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) into the sky: <em>while they were watching <\/em>(\u03b2\u03bb\u03b5\u03c0\u1f79\u03bd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03b2\u03bb\u03ad\u03c0\u03c9)<em>, he was lifted up<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u1f75\u03c1\u03b8\u03b7, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>) <em>and a cloud hid him from their sight<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f40\u03c6\u03b8\u03b1\u03bb\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f40\u03c6\u03b8\u03b1\u03bb\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2\">\u1f40\u03c6\u03b8\u03b1\u03bb\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) But only Stephen, as he was stoned to death, <em>full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c4\u03b5\u03bd\u1f77\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03c4\u03b5\u03bd\u03af\u03b6\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03c4\u03b5\u03bd\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>toward heaven <\/em>(\u03bf\u1f50\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bf\u1f50\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03bf\u1f50\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <em>and saw<\/em> (\u03b5\u1f36\u03b4\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9\">\u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The others must have \u201cseen\u201d this in some other way, similar perhaps to the way they \u201csaw\u201d Jesus <em>give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, the word (\u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1) translated <em>things<\/em> or <em>events<\/em> in Acts 5:32 was translated <em>words<\/em> in: <em>Then the women remembered his words<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd), and <em>If anyone hears my words<\/em> (\u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd) <em>and does not obey them, I do not judge him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Had Acts 5:32 been translated\u2014<em>And we are witnesses of these<\/em> words\u2014it would have been more obvious that the apostles became witnesses by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+10%3A17&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">believing what they heard<\/a> rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+16:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seeing with their eyes<\/a>.\u00a0 I could quote many instances of forms of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1 translated as <em>word<\/em> or <em>words<\/em>.\u00a0 It will be more efficient to look into those which were translated differently.<\/p>\n<p><em>But if he does not listen, take one or two others with you, so that<\/em> <strong><em>at the testimony of two or three witnesses every matter <\/em><\/strong>(\u03c1\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1, another form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1) <strong><em>may be established<\/em><\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 (<em>This is the third time I am coming to visit you.<\/em> \u00a0<strong><em>By the testimony<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>of two or three witnesses every matter <\/em><\/strong>(\u03c1\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1, another form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1) <strong><em>will be established<\/em><\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>)\u00a0 The differences in the various translations prompts the question: What is being established (NET, DNT, NIV, ASV, KJV, NKJV, YLT, NAB), stood upon (DNT, YLT), clarified (TMSG), confirmed (ISVNT), verified (ISVNT, GWT), attested (MSNT), sustained (MSNT), proved true (CEV), upheld (TEV)?\u00a0 Is it the word (\u03c1\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1) of the witnesses (\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u1f7b\u03c1\u03c9\u03bd)?\u00a0 Or is it the brother\u2019s sin?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Or is it both?<\/p>\n<p><em>A single witness<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Deu&amp;c=19&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_172015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03bc\u1f71\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c2) <em>may not testify<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Deu&amp;c=19&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_172015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>) <em>against another person for any trespass or sin that he commits. \u00a0A matter<\/em> (Hebrew: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_d\u00e2b\u00e2r\">d\u00e2b\u00e2r<\/a><\/em>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Deu&amp;c=19&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_172015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1) <em>may be legally established only on the testimony of two or three witnesses<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In the context of the original verse Jesus\u2019 quoted, it is fairly clear that the <em>word<\/em> of the witnesses was being <em>legally established<\/em>.\u00a0 The words <em>d\u00e2b\u00e2r<\/em> or \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1 might have been translated <em>accusation<\/em>, but I see no credible reason to translate them <em>matter<\/em> until I look at the larger context and its implications (Deuteronomy 19:16-19a NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If a false witness testifies against another person and accuses him of a crime <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/#_Table29\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, then both parties to the controversy must stand before the Lord, that is, before the priests and judges who will be in office in those days <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/#_Table31\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0The judges will thoroughly investigate the matter, and if the witness should prove to be false and to have given false testimony against the accused <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/#_Table33\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, you must do to him what he had intended to do to the accused <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/#_Table35\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those who malign the Lord (as I have done) for the law\u2019s death penalty for very human offenses never mention this little gem.\u00a0 The gossip who sees a man sneaking out of the widow\u2019s house in the middle of the night must consider her own jeopardy before accusing them of a capital offense.\u00a0 And as I begin to argue in my own mind that gossips would never be punished as severely as adulterers, I hear the law addressed directly to judges who would practice such injustice (Deuteronomy 19:19b-21 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In this way you will purge evil from among you <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/#_Table35\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0The rest of the people will hear and become afraid to keep doing such evil <em>[i.e., gossiping, becoming a false witness]<\/em> among you <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/#_Table37\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0You must not show pity; the principle will be a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, and a foot for a foot <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/#_Table39\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The judges had no discretion regarding the sentencing of false witnesses.\u00a0 It truly is a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/12\/22\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-6\/#_law\">beautiful law<\/a>.\u00a0 Deuteronomy 19:15-21 all but guarantees (as much as any law <em>weakened through the flesh<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> can \u201cguarantee\u201d anything pertaining to human behavior) that only the most flagrant and egregious sins would ever come up for adjudication.\u00a0 But none of this justifies the translation of <em>d\u00e2b\u00e2r<\/em>\/\u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1 as <em>matter<\/em> in my mind until I ask, what triggers the investigation of the false witness?<\/p>\n<p>I assume it is the same thing that triggers the procedural acceleration in Mathew 18:16, <em>But if he does not listen<\/em> (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 If the accused <em>hears<\/em> the <em>word<\/em> of the witnesses, does not accuse them of lying, the <em>matter<\/em> is <em>legally established<\/em>\u2026<em>on the testimony of two or three witnesses <\/em>as a matter of procedure.\u00a0 The procedure is at its end.\u00a0 In this sense I can barely justify translating <em>d\u00e2b\u00e2r<\/em>\/\u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1 as <em>matter<\/em>, with the proviso that it hides the fact from the non-Hebrew-non-Greek-studying English-speaking world that the <em>word<\/em> of the witnesses was the primary focus and concern of the Word of God.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_police\"><\/a>Given the time and place I came of age I can\u2019t help but wonder if <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>\/Jesus, both in the law and in the Gospel of Matthew, hasn\u2019t instituted the most virulent form of thought police ever conceived.\u00a0 But let me take some of the <em>things<\/em>, <em>events <\/em>or <em>words<\/em> (\u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1) the apostles \u201csaw\u201d (or heard and believed) seriously (Acts 5:31 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>God exalted <em>[Jesus]<\/em> to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness <em>(\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2\">\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of sins.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The words do not say, God exalted [Jesus] to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to institute the most virulent form of thought police ever conceived.\u00a0 Through hearing with faith I can stand up to the socially constructed reality of my upbringing and accept that what I may think was instituted as thought police was actually instituted <em>to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins<\/em>.\u00a0 It transforms my outlook.<\/p>\n<p>What if an avid student of the law had heard <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/31\/jephthah\/\">Jephthah<\/a>\u2019s thoughtless oath?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>If you really do hand the Ammonites over to me <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_Table57\">Table<\/a>]<em>, then whoever is the first to come through the doors of my house to meet me when I return safely from fighting the Ammonites \u2013 he will belong to the Lord and I will offer him up as a burnt sacrifice <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_Table59\">Table<\/a>].<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Maybe the avid law student didn\u2019t recognize it as a thoughtless oath until <em>Jephthah came home to Mizpah, there was his daughter hurrying out to meet him, dancing to the rhythm of tambourines<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn22\" name=\"_ftnref22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps the law didn\u2019t come to his mind until <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/04\/jephthah-and-moses\/\">Jephthah<\/a> <em>ripped his clothes and said, \u201cOh no!\u00a0 My daughter!\u00a0 You have completely ruined me!\u00a0 You have brought me disaster!\u00a0 I made an oath to the Lord, and I cannot break it.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn23\" name=\"_ftnref23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Or if that didn\u2019t do it maybe her answer jogged his memory, <em>My father, since you made an oath to the Lord, do to me as you promised. \u00a0After all, the Lord vindicated you before your enemies, the Ammonites<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn24\" name=\"_ftnref24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Or if that fell on deaf ears, what if the law came to him any time during the two months Jephthah\u2019s daughter wandered the hills with her friends to mourn her virginity?<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn25\" name=\"_ftnref25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What if the avid law student came to Jephthah with two comrades who heard his oath? and said, \u201cJephthah, you have made a thoughtless oath in our hearing.\u00a0 Now hear the word of the Lord (Leviticus 5:4-6 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>[W]<\/em>hen a person swears an oath, speaking thoughtlessly with his lips, whether to do evil or to do good, with regard to anything which the individual might speak thoughtlessly in an oath, even if he did not realize it, but he himself has later come to know it and is guilty with regard to one of these oaths <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/04\/jephthah-and-moses\/#_Table51\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>\u2026he must confess how he has sinned <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/04\/jephthah-and-moses\/#_Table53\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, and he must bring his penalty for guilt to the Lord for his sin that he has committed, a female from the flock, whether a female sheep or a female goat, for a sin offering. \u00a0So the priest will make atonement on his behalf for his sin <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/04\/jephthah-and-moses\/#_Table55\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The risk for the witnesses, the avid law student and his two comrades, was a female sheep or a female goat (a piece, I assume, less if they were poor<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn26\" name=\"_ftnref26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a>).\u00a0 The benefit for Jephthah was his daughter\u2019s life.\u00a0 It is in keeping with the beautiful law, and the intent of God the Father and Jesus the Leader and Savior <em>to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jephthah may have rejected the word of the witnesses anyway.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/07\/jephthahs-religious-mind\/\">religious mind<\/a> is capable of atrocities ordinary sinners shrink from committing.\u00a0 But if he had rejected the word of the witnesses Jephthah would have been a rebellious son of Israel rather than the tragic victim of a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/12\/22\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-6\/#_pious\">pious good<\/a>: <em>After two months she returned to her father, and<\/em> [Jephthah] <em>did to her as he had vowed<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn27\" name=\"_ftnref27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Standing up to the religious mind, one\u2019s own as well as those of others, is part and parcel of following Christ.\u00a0 For some of us it is the cross<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/20\/apostles-and-prophets-part-3\/#_ftn28\" name=\"_ftnref28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a> we bear. \u00a0I\u2019ll return
