is Sexual Immorality?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a long time I thought I understood exactly what <em>sexual immorality<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) in 1 Corinthians 5:1 (NET) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/27\/adultery-in-the-law-part-3\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>] meant.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is actually reported that sexual immorality <em>(<\/em><em>\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> exists among you, the kind of immorality <em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> that is not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/27\/adultery-in-the-law-part-3\/#sdfootnote2sym\">permitted<\/a> even among the Gentiles, so that someone is cohabiting <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ec.html#ecein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ec.html#ecw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>with his father\u2019s wife.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I assumed that <em>father\u2019s wife<\/em> meant <em>not the son\u2019s mother<\/em>.\u00a0 So I assumed this wife was at least the father\u2019s second, probably younger than he, maybe even closer to the son\u2019s age.\u00a0 The son and the father\u2019s new young wife became attracted to one another.\u00a0 Either she divorced the father and married the son or simply ran off with the son.\u00a0 The Greek word translated <em>cohabiting<\/em> is\u00a0\u1f14\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd (\u1f14\u03c7\u03c9, <em>to hold<\/em>) and might mean either (along with a host of other forms of possession or ownership usually translated <em>to have<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>For all I know this is exactly what it means, but some confusion and uncertainty set in as I began to wonder what \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 itself meant, especially when I began to suspect that it had something to do with &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/29\/adultery-in-the-prophets-part-1\/\">idolatrous worship<\/a> (including its <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/02\/08\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-2\/\">drunken sexual practices<\/a>).&#8221;\u00a0 My religious mind says, \u201cLook, I\u2019ve got the rule: \u2018Don\u2019t mess around with your father\u2019s wife.\u2019\u00a0 I\u2019m satisfied with that.\u00a0 Don\u2019t confuse me.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve obviously become suspicious of my religious mind.\u00a0 So in the spirit of expanding the context a bit and knowing <em>the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom<\/em> [He] <em>sent<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> I\u2019m going to explore some of my confusion.<\/p>\n<p>The sin scenario I described above is <em>adultery<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moiceia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) plain and simple.\u00a0 Why call it \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1? \u00a0But I had assumed that the father was still alive.\u00a0 What if the father was already deceased?<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">You must not have sexual intercourse with your father\u2019s wife; she is your father\u2019s nakedness.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Leviticus 18:8 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">If a man has sexual\u00a0intercourse with his father\u2019s wife, he has exposed his father\u2019s\u00a0nakedness.\u00a0 Both of them must be put to death; their blood guilt is on themselves.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Leviticus 20:11 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>This is the strongest indication I know that \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 meant a violation of Leviticus 18 and 20 to Jesus, Paul and the New Testament writers.\u00a0 But why would there be such an arbitrary limit?\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 mean <em>immorality<\/em> in general, any and every violation of God\u2019s law?\u00a0 That led me inexorably to the conclusion that though \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 may have connoted violations of Leviticus 18 and 20 in Jewish minds (strictly speaking Paul was descended from Benjamin not Judah), its underlying denotation in Greek was the sexuality of ancient (and not so ancient) religious worship.<\/p>\n<p>This form of religious worship was still <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/06\/05\/cult-prostitutes\/\">practiced openly<\/a> in Corinth.\u00a0 In Corinth the \u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03b7, the female devotee of this manner of worship, still lived in all her honor and glory.\u00a0 And I think it is safe to say that though this form of worship wasn\u2019t mandatory, it was still a good way to advance one\u2019s business and political ambitions (not to mention satisfying a thirst for wine, women and song).\u00a0 With that in mind I want to look at the next chapter of 1 Corinthians.\u00a0 I\u2019m quoting 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 (NET), except that I\u2019m not translating words from the \u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2 word group.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAll things are lawful for me\u201d \u2013 but not everything is beneficial. \u00a0\u201cAll things are lawful for me\u201d \u2013 but I will not be controlled by anything. \u00a0\u201cFood is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both.\u201d\u00a0 The body is not for <em>[\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u1fb3]<\/em>, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. \u00a0Now God indeed raised the Lord and he will raise us by his power. \u00a0Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?\u00a0 Should I take the members of Christ and make them members of a <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#pornhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#pornh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>]<\/em>?\u00a0 Never! \u00a0Or do you not know that anyone who is united with a <em>[\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u1fc3]<\/em> is one body with her?\u00a0 For it is said, \u201c<strong><em>The two will become one flesh<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d \u00a0But the one united with the Lord is one spirit with him. \u00a0Flee <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u1fb3]<\/em>!\u00a0 \u201cEvery sin a person commits is outside of the body\u201d \u2013 but <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneuwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>]<\/em> sins against his own body. \u00a0Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Holy Spirit<\/a> who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? \u00a0For you were bought at a price.\u00a0 Therefore glorify God with your body.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While it is probably true that <em>the body is not for<\/em> an everyday-run-of-the-mill prostitute, I think the thrust of Paul\u2019s message above (I should say \u201cno pun intended,\u201d but I can\u2019t say for sure) was the cultic variety.\u00a0 <em>Members of Christ<\/em> should not also become <em>members<\/em> of other gods (or goddesses).<\/p>\n<p>The phrases in quotes above are thought to be Corinthian slogans (notes <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+6:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10, 11<\/a>) by the translators of the NET.\u00a0 That may be true, but I still believe that, <em>All things are lawful for me but not everything is beneficial<\/em> is Paul\u2019s take home message from the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/16\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-1\/\">Jerusalem Council<\/a>.\u00a0 I seriously doubt that James took home the same message.\u00a0 And I believe that Paul was beginning to struggle with it a bit here.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the Jerusalem Council God had apparently only called Gentiles who were Jewish converts, God fearers or people who had attached themselves to Jewish synagogues in some fashion.\u00a0 In Corinth He also <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+6:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a>, <em>The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, thieves, the greedy, drunkards,<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <em>the verbally abusive, and swindlers<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And He had given them his Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 1:4-9 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God that was given to you in Christ Jesus. \u00a0For you were made rich in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge \u2013 just as the testimony about Christ has been confirmed among you \u2013 so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. \u00a0He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. \u00a0God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_pimping\"><\/a>Apparently some of them were having difficulty shedding their former sins.\u00a0 What\u2019s a former Pharisee to do? \u00a0Paul singled out one man who <em>had<\/em> his father\u2019s wife, and made an example of him.\u00a0 I\u2019ve considered that perhaps this man <em>had<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd, a form of\u00a0\u1f14\u03c7\u03c9) his father\u2019s wife in a more commercial sense, that he was pimping her somehow as a temple prostitute.\u00a0 But it feels like I\u2019m reaching.\u00a0 Paul was quite careful in 1 Corinthians 7:2 (NET) to clarify the vagaries of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ec.html#ecetw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c7\u1f73\u03c4\u03c9<\/a> (another form of \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But because of immoralities <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1)<\/em>, each man should have relations with <em>(\u1f10\u03c7\u1f73\u03c4\u03c9, another form of\u00a0\u1f14\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em> his own wife and each woman with <em>(\u1f10\u03c7\u1f73\u03c4\u03c9, another form of\u00a0\u1f14\u03c7\u03c9)<\/em>\u00a0her own husband.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The translators added the words <em>relations with<\/em> for clarity.\u00a0 In Greek it reads more like, each man should <em>have<\/em> his own wife and each woman should <em>have<\/em> her own husband.\u00a0 Out of context like this it is a clear command that all in Corinth should marry.\u00a0 But Paul introduced this statement with 1 Corinthians 7:1 (NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is good <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kal.html#kalon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kal.html#kalos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>for a man not to have sexual relations <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apt.html#aptesqai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f05\u03c0\u03c4\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apt.html#aptw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f05\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>with a woman.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So he clarified the meaning of \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9 (\u1f10\u03c7\u1f73\u03c4\u03c9) in this case and kept its use from becoming an unintended prohibition against celibacy.\u00a0 Surely some clarification or elaboration on \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9 (\u1f14\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd) was in order if Paul meant to communicate that a man was pimping his father\u2019s wife as a temple prostitute, unless the meaning of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u00a0so clearly and exclusively referenced such activity that no other meaning would have been considered.\u00a0 And I am still a long way from accepting that idea.\u00a0 <a id=\"_difficult\"><\/a>I consider 1 Thessalonians 4:1-5 (NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Finally<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>then, brothers and sisters, we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>as you received instruction from us about how you must live and please God (as you are in fact living)<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>that you do so more and more. \u00a0For you know what commands we gave you through the Lord Jesus. \u00a0For this is God\u2019s will: that you become holy, that you keep away from <em>[\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/em><em>]<\/em>, that each of you know how to possess his own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far so good.\u00a0 I\u2019m willing to accept that Paul was writing about abstaining from <em>idolatrous worship (including its drunken sexual practices)<\/em>.\u00a0 But wait, Paul continued (1 Thessalonians 4:6-8 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In this matter no one should violate the rights of his brother or take advantage of him, because the<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Lord is the avenger in all these cases, as we also told you earlier<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and warned you solemnly. \u00a0For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness. \u00a0Consequently the one who rejects this is not rejecting human authority but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if believing women in the first century could be compelled against their wills<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> to serve in Thessalonica as cult prostitutes or not.\u00a0 I would hope if that were the case that Paul\u2019s words would have had more fight in them.\u00a0 He probably wouldn\u2019t have said, \u201cLock and load, brothers!\u201d\u00a0 I doubt that Paul would consider having the brothers go all <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-7\/\">Simeon and Levi<\/a><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> on the town of Thessalonica was the best way to present the Gospel.\u00a0 But he might have suggested that a brother should get to her first, buy her and take her home to her husband, rather than the comparatively wimpy admonition not to <em>violate the rights of his brother or take advantage of<\/em> the situation!<\/p>\n<p>So, though Paul used the word\u00a0\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 (a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1) in 1 Thessalonians 4:3, I sincerely hope he meant simple adultery, (\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03af\u03b1).\u00a0 And its usage here persuades me that \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 could\u00a0mean \u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03af\u03b1.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum<\/strong>: April 6, 2019<\/p>\n<p>Tables comparing <a
