I can\u2019t tell if I perceive some confusion in the Apostle Paul\u2019s thinking (literally writing<\/em>, specifically 1 Corinthians 5:3<\/a>) because I have been confused so often in my own thinking, or if I am recasting Paul in my own image because I have been confused so often in my own thinking and can\u2019t stand the idea that he was so perfect in his thought and writing.\u00a0 As far as I can tell the impetus comes from an honest place, but even honest and sincere people can be honestly<\/em> and sincerely<\/em> wrong.\u00a0 So I\u2019m going to proceed with quite a bit of pedantry (Yes, I\u2019m going to become even more pedantic) to lay out the issues involved in as much detail as possible.\u00a0 The spirit behind this particular pedantry<\/em> is not an ostentatious and inappropriate display of learning<\/em>, but the leisurely pace of an eternal life of knowing God and Jesus Christ.1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll back up to the beginning of the Gospel ministry to Gentiles (Acts 10:1, 2 NET):<\/p>\n

Now there was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort. \u00a0He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was all his household; he did2<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>many acts of charity for the people and prayed to God regularly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The note in the NET reads: \u201cThe description of Cornelius as a devout, God-fearing man<\/em> probably means that he belonged to the category called \u2018God-fearers,\u2019 Gentiles who worshiped the God of Israel and in many cases kept the Mosaic law, but did not take the final step of circumcision necessary to become a proselyte to Judaism. See further K. G. Kuhn, TDNT<\/em> 6:732-34, 43-44, and Sir 11:17; 27:11; 39:27.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cornelius\u2019 story continued (Acts 10:3-5 NET):<\/p>\n

About3<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>three4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>o\u2019clock one afternoon he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God who came in and said to him, \u201cCornelius.\u201d \u00a0Staring at him and becoming greatly afraid, Cornelius replied, \u201cWhat is it, Lord?\u201d\u00a0 The angel said to him, \u201cYour prayers and your acts of charity have gone up as a memorial before5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>God. \u00a0Now send men to Joppa and summon a man6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>named Simon, who7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>is called Peter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Cornelius sent two of his personal servants and a devout soldier<\/em>8<\/sup><\/a> to find Peter.\u00a0 The next day about noon while they were on the way (Acts 10:9b-14 NET):<\/p>\n

Peter went up on the roof to pray. \u00a0He became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>were preparing the meal, a trance came10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>over him. \u00a0He saw heaven opened and an object something like a large sheet descending,11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>being12<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>let down to earth13<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>by its four corners. \u00a0In it were all kinds of four-footed animals14<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and reptiles15<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>of the earth and wild birds.16<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0Then a voice said to him, \u201cGet up, Peter; slaughter and eat!\u201d \u00a0But Peter said, \u201cCertainly not, Lord, for I have never eaten anything defiled (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>and17<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>ritually unclean (\u1f00\u03ba\u1f71\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03ba\u03ac\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though Peter addressed the voice<\/em> as Lord<\/em> his first instinct was to argue his own righteousness derived from the dietary laws of Leviticus 11.\u00a0 This is a recognizable trait of Peter\u2019s (Matthew 16:21-23 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. \u00a0So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him: \u201cGod forbid, Lord!\u00a0 This must not happen to you!\u201d \u00a0But he turned and said to Peter, \u201cGet behind me, Satan!\u00a0 You are a stumbling block to me<\/a>, because you are not setting your mind on God\u2019s interests, but on man\u2019s.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The incident recorded in Matthew was prior to Peter receiving the Holy Spirit on Pentecost and the incident recorded in Acts was after.\u00a0 It is at least a little comforting to me that the Holy Spirit did not completely obliterate the instincts of Peter\u2019s religious mind, since mine are so prevalent and troublesome to me. \u00a0But even more comforting is the encouragement that comes from knowing that the Holy Spirit overcame the natural reluctance of Peter\u2019s religious mind (Acts 10:15-23a NET).<\/p>\n

The voice spoke to him again, a second time, \u201cWhat God has made clean, you must not consider ritually unclean (\u03ba\u03bf\u1f77\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>!\u201d \u00a0This happened three times, and immediately18<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the object was taken up19<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>into heaven. \u00a0Now while Peter was puzzling over what the vision he had seen could signify,20<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the men sent by21<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Cornelius had learned where Simon\u2019s22<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>house was and approached the gate. \u00a0They called out to ask if Simon, known as Peter, was staying there as a guest. \u00a0While Peter was still thinking seriously23<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>about the vision, the Spirit said to him, \u201cLook!\u00a0 Three men are looking24<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>for you. \u00a0But get up, go down, and accompany them without hesitation, because25<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>I have sent them.\u201d \u00a0So Peter went down to the men26<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and said, \u201cHere I am, the person you\u2019re looking for.\u00a0 Why have you come?\u201d \u00a0They said,27<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u201cCornelius the centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man, well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear a message from you.\u201d \u00a0So Peter invited them in and entertained them as guests.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Peter traveled with them the next day to meet Cornelius (Acts 10:25-29 NET).<\/p>\n

So when Peter came in,28<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him. \u00a0But Peter helped him up, saying, \u201cStand up. I too29<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>am a mere mortal.\u201d \u00a0Peter continued talking with him as he went in, and he found many people gathered together. \u00a0He said to them, \u201cYou know that it is unlawful (\u1f00\u03b8\u1f73\u03bc\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03b8\u03ad\u03bc\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile, yet God has shown me30<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>that I should call no person defiled (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd<\/em>, a form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em> or ritually unclean (\u1f00\u03ba\u1f71\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03ba\u03ac\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em>. \u00a0Therefore when you sent for me, I came without any objection. \u00a0Now may I ask why you sent for me?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Cornelius related the vision he had seen.\u00a0 Peter replied, I now truly understand that God does not show favoritism in dealing with people,<\/em>31<\/sup><\/a> but in every nation the person who fears him and does what is right is welcomed before him<\/em>.32<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Peter related the Gospel to Cornelius, his relatives and close friends<\/em>.33<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the message. \u00a0The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were greatly astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God<\/em>.34<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

There were still more religious minds to overcome.\u00a0 Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles too had accepted the word of God. \u00a0So when Peter went up to Jerusalem,<\/em>35<\/sup><\/a> the circumcised believers took issue with him, saying, \u201cYou went to uncircumcised men and shared a meal with them.\u201d<\/em>36<\/sup><\/a> Peter told them all that had transpired, beginning with his own vision (Acts 11:4-12<\/a>) and then Cornelius\u2019 vision (Acts 11:13-18 NET).<\/p>\n

[<\/em>Cornelius]<\/em> informed37<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>us how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying,38<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u2018Send39<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter, who will speak a message to you by which you and your entire household will be saved.\u2019 \u00a0Then as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he did on us at the beginning. \u00a0And I remembered the word of the40<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Lord, as he used to say, \u2018John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.\u2019 \u00a0Therefore if God gave them the same gift (\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1f70\u03bd<\/a>) <\/em>as he also gave us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I41<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>to hinder God?\u201d \u00a0When they heard this, they ceased their objections and praised42<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>God, saying, \u201cSo then,43<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>God has granted the repentance (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em>that leads to life even to the Gentiles.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The word Gentiles<\/em> (\u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of\u00a0\u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) was synonymous with sinners<\/em>.<\/p>\n
