I want to turn my attention to the circumstances when God named Solomon Jedidiah<\/a>. \u00a0It all started one spring when King David didn\u2019t go to war with his army.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t sleep.\u00a0 He got up and walked on the roof of his palace.\u00a0 He saw a woman bathing.\u00a0 Now David wasn\u2019t a young prince catching his first glimpse of a naked woman.\u00a0 He had several wives and concubines by this time.\u00a0 He had the means, as it were, to entertain this traveler<\/em>, as the prophet Nathan would later describe David\u2019s lust.\u00a0 David sent a messenger to find out about the woman.\u00a0 So he knew she was Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite, a soldier serving in his army, before he summoned her and before he had sex with her (2 Samuel 11:1-4<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The cover-up began after Bathsheba sent word to David that she was pregnant (2 Samuel 11:5<\/a>).\u00a0 So David summoned Uriah home from the war.\u00a0 He asked him how the campaign was going and sent him home to his wife.\u00a0 But Uriah refused to go home.\u00a0 He would not enjoy the comforts and pleasures of home and wife while his comrades-in-arms camped in the open.\u00a0 The next day David wined and dined Uriah, and got him drunk.\u00a0 Still Uriah would not go home to Bathsheba.\u00a0 So David sent Uriah back to the front with a sealed letter for Joab the commander of David\u2019s army.<\/p>\n

Apparently Uriah delivered the message unopened to Joab, because he faithfully delivered his own death sentence to his executioner.\u00a0 Joab faithfully carried out David\u2019s instructions to put Uriah in the front lines and then withdraw from him in the thick of battle.\u00a0 Uriah died.\u00a0 After an appropriate time of grieving for appearance\u2019s sake, David took Bathsheba as another wife, and she gave birth to a son.<\/p>\n

Later the Lord Jesus<\/a> sent Nathan, a prophet, with an adroit hypothetical to David:\u00a0 There were two men in a certain city, <\/em>Nathan explained, one rich and the other poor.\u00a0 The rich man had a great many flocks and herds.\u00a0 But the poor man had nothing except for a little lamb he had acquired. He raised it, and it grew up alongside him and his children.\u00a0 It used to eat his food, drink from his cup, and sleep in his arms.\u00a0 It was just like a daughter to him.\u00a0 When a traveler arrived at the rich man\u2019s home, he did not want to use one of his own sheep or cattle to feed the traveler who had come to visit him. Instead, he took the poor man\u2019s lamb and cooked it for the man who had come to visit him.<\/em><\/p>\n

As surely as the Lord lives<\/em>, David said angrily, the man who did this deserves to die!\u00a0 Because he committed this cold-hearted crime, he must pay for the lamb four times over!<\/em><\/p>\n

You are that man!<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a> Nathan said to David.<\/p>\n

I want to pause here a moment to fully appreciate David\u2019s position vis-\u00e0-vis the law.\u00a0 The law the Lord Jesus gave to Moses<\/a> at Sinai was quite specific.\u00a0 If a man commits adultery with his neighbor\u2019s wife, both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death<\/em>.2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So David had not only condemned himself but Bathsheba, for whom he presumably had some affection, to death.\u00a0 Also, Whoever strikes someone so that he dies must surely be put to death<\/em>.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Now if one were to argue the technicality that David didn\u2019t exactly strike Uriah himself, the law the Lord Jesus delivered to Moses continued, But if a man willfully attacks his neighbor to kill him cunningly, you will take him even from my altar that he may die<\/em>.4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The altar was a place where Israelite sinners could find mercy and forgiveness.\u00a0 Whenever a leader, by straying unintentionally, sins and violates one of the commandments of the Lord his God which must not be violated<\/em>, the Lord Jesus told Moses, and he pleads guilty, or his sin that he committed is made known to him, he must bring a flawless male goat as his offering<\/em>.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I have to admit that I don\u2019t know if David\u2019s actions would qualify as unintentional.\u00a0 I\u2019m not even sure if this remedy was meant to apply to adultery or murder.\u00a0 I do know that you will take him even from my altar that he may die<\/em> sounds ominous.<\/p>\n

This is what the Lord God of Israel says<\/em>, Nathan continued, “I chose you to be king over Israel and I rescued you from the hand of Saul.\u00a0 I gave you your master\u2019s house, and put your master\u2019s wives into your arms.\u00a0 I also gave you the house of Israel and Judah. \u00a0And if all that somehow seems insignificant, I would have given you so much more as well!\u00a0 Why have you shown contempt for the word of the Lord by doing evil in my sight?\u00a0 You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and you have taken his wife as your own!\u00a0 You have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.\u00a0 So now the sword will never depart from your house.\u00a0 For you have despised me by taking the wife of Uriah the Hittite as your own!\u201d\u00a0 This is what the Lord says: “I am about to bring disaster on you from inside your own household!\u00a0 Right before your eyes I will take your wives and hand them over to your companion.\u00a0 He will have sexual relations with your wives in broad daylight!\u00a0 Although you have acted in secret, I will do this thing before all Israel, and in broad daylight<\/em>.\u201d6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I have sinned against the Lord!<\/em>7<\/sup><\/a> David exclaimed.<\/p>\n

<\/a>A lot is made of confession of sin in the religious circles I frequent.\u00a0 So I want to quote another, even better confession, as confessions go (Joshua 7:20, 21 NET).<\/p>\n

It is true. \u00a0I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel in this way: \u00a0I saw among the goods we seized a nice robe from Babylon, two hundred silver pieces, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels. \u00a0I wanted them, so I took them. \u00a0They are hidden in the ground right in the middle of my tent with the silver underneath.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is Achan\u2019s confession for stealing some of the things that had been devoted to the Lord Jesus<\/a>.\u00a0 Jesus had warned them that they would not stand before their enemies if they betrayed him in this way.\u00a0 And sure enough, Achan\u2019s sin was discovered after the Israelites suffered a defeat in battle.<\/p>\n

Joshua, the Israelite leader who succeeded Moses, was crying and praying face down on the ground when the Lord Jesus spoke to him: Get up! \u00a0Why are you lying there face down? \u00a0Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenantal commandment!\u00a0 They have taken some of the riches; they have stolen them and deceitfully put them among their own possessions. \u00a0The Israelites are unable to stand before their enemies; they retreat because they have become subject to annihilation.\u00a0 I will no longer be with you, unless you destroy what has contaminated you<\/em>.8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Achan was discovered by lot. \u00a0His confession was intended to justify the Lord not himself.\u00a0 Joshua sent messengers who discovered the stolen articles exactly where Achan claimed they were hidden.<\/p>\n

The one caught with the riches must be burned up along with all who belong to him, because he violated the Lord\u2019s covenant and did such a disgraceful thing in Israel<\/em>,9<\/sup><\/a> the Lord Jesus declared.<\/p>\n

Then Joshua and all Israel took Achan\u2026along with the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, daughters, ox, donkey, sheep, tent, and all that belonged to him and brought them up to the Valley of Disaster <\/em>[or, Achor].<\/em>10<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Joshua said, \u201cWhy have you brought disaster on us? \u00a0The Lord will bring disaster on you today!\u201d \u00a0All Israel stoned him to death. \u00a0(They also stoned and burned the others.) \u00a0Then they erected over him a large pile of stones (it remains to this very day) and the Lord\u2019s anger subsided.\u00a0 So that place is called the Valley of Disaster<\/em>11<\/sup><\/a> to this very day<\/em>.12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

This turn of events is admittedly shocking to our ears and abhorrent to our beliefs about confession of sin.\u00a0 But it was the prophet Hosea, long after the time of David, speaking about another future time when Israel would return to the Lord in repentance, who prophesied that the Lord Jesus would turn the \u201cValley of Trouble\u201d<\/em> [or, Achor] into an \u201cOpportunity<\/em> [or, doorway] for Hope<\/em>\u201d (Hosea 2:15-17 NET).<\/p>\n

From there I will give back her vineyards to her, and turn the \u201cValley of Trouble\u201d13<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>into an \u201cOpportunity for Hope.\u201d\u00a0 There she will sing as she did when she was young,14<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>when she came up from the land of Egypt.\u00a0 \u201cAt that time,\u201d declares the Lord, \u201cyou will call, \u2018My husband\u2019; you will never again call me, \u2018My master.\u2019 \u00a0For I will remove the names of the Baal idols from your lips, so that you will never again utter their names!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But even before these promises came to pass, the prophet Nathan, sent by the Lord Jesus, replied to David\u2019s confession, Yes, and the Lord has forgiven<\/a> your sin.\u00a0 You are not going to die.\u00a0 Nonetheless, because you have treated the Lord with such contempt in this matter, the son who has been born to you will certainly die<\/em>.15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
