Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To understand the relationship of <em>sin<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) to <em>sin<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) I\u2019ll spend some time considering Paul\u2019s usage of the words in other writings. \u00a0Both words were used in Romans 5:12-15 (NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So then, just as sin <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> entered the world through one man and death through sin <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, and so death spread to all people because all sinned <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hm.html#hmarton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f25\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>\u2013 for before the law was given, sin <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> was in the world, but there is no accounting <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ell.html#ellogeitai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ell.html#ellogew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>for sin <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> when there is no law. \u00a0Yet death reigned from Adam until Moses<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/27\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-3\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>even over those who did not sin <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amarthsantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ae\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> in the same way that Adam (who is a type of the coming one) transgressed <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parab.html#parabasews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b2\u03ac\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parab.html#parabasis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>But the gracious gift <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#carisma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em>is not like the transgression <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0For if the many died through the transgression <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwmati\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> of the one man, how much more did the grace <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#caris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>of God and the gift <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dw.html#dwrea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u03ac<\/a>) <\/em>by the grace<em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cariti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#caris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of the one man Jesus Christ multiply to the many!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul made a very specific differentiation between <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> in this passage, but it is not one of greater or lesser degree.\u00a0 Sin (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) entered the world through one man\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parab.html#parabasis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, that was Adam\u2019s <em>transgression<\/em> of a specific command not to eat of a particular fruit.\u00a0 Death entered the world through sin (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0 Death spread to all people because all sinned (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) despite the fact that not all sinned by breaking a specific commandment like Adam had.\u00a0 The clause, <em>For if the many died through the transgression<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of the one man<\/em>, links <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> to Adam\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parab.html#parabasis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>.\u00a0 So sin (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) is the breaking of specific commandments after the law was given and an accounting (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ell.html#ellogew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) must be rendered, as distinct from sin (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) before the law was given.<\/p>\n<p>I am not prepared to say that Paul maintained this technical differentiation every time he used the words.\u00a0 But it is a strong indication that <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> was not less than <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a> in Paul\u2019s mind.\u00a0 He continued (Romans 5:16-21 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And the gift is not like the one who sinned <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amarthsantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ae\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>For judgment <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krima\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>), <\/em>resulting from the one transgression, led to condemnation <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katak.html#katakrima\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>), <\/em>but the gracious gift <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#carisma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> from the many failures <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwmatwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> led to justification <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03af\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>For if, by the transgression <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwmati\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> of the one man, death reigned through the one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#caritos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#caris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> and of the gift <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dw.html#dwreas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dw.html#dwrea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u03ac<\/a>)<\/em> of righteousness <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>) <\/em>reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ!<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, just as condemnation <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katak.html#katakrima\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> for all people came through one transgression <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwmatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, so too through the one righteous act <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiwmatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a \u00a0For just as through the disobedience <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parak.html#parakohs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parak.html#parakoh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>) <\/em>of the one man many were made sinners <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartwloi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bb\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartwlos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>), <\/em>so also through the obedience <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakohs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakoh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>) <\/em>of one man many will be made righteous <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaioi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>Now the law came in so that the transgression <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> may increase, but where sin <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> increased, grace <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#caris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> multiplied all the more, so that just as sin <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> reigned in death, so also grace <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#caris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> will reign through righteousness <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The law came in so that<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>\u00a0<em>may increase, but where<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>\u00a0<em>increased, grace <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#caris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>multiplied all the more<\/em>, seems more like synonymous usage of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parap.html#paraptwma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\"
