So Barnabas and Saul,1<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>sent out by the2<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia,3<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>from there they sailed to Cyprus.5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0When they arrived in Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the Jewish synagogues.6<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They traveled east across the island this way to Paphos.\u00a0 And so begins the account of what is known as Paul\u2019s first missionary journey.\u00a0 The proconsul Sergius Paulus summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God<\/em>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 A magician called Bar-Jesus (also called Elymas) opposed their preaching.\u00a0 But Saul (also known as Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit<\/a>, stared straight at him and said, \u201cYou who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness \u2013 will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?<\/em>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then Paul prophesied that the magician would be blind for a time, and the magician was unable to see and needed to be led by the hand.<\/p>\n

Then when the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed (\u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>), <\/em>because he was greatly astounded at the teaching about the Lord.9<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This incident reminds me of the story of Jesus and the centurion (Matthew 8:5-10 NET):<\/p>\n

When [Jesus]10<\/sup><\/a><\/em> entered11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Capernaum12<\/sup><\/a><\/em>, a centurion came to him asking for help: \u00a0\u201cLord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible anguish.\u201d \u00a0Jesus13<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>said to him, \u201cI will come and heal him.\u201d \u00a0But the centurion replied, \u201cLord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. \u00a0Instead, just say the word14<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and my servant will be healed. \u00a0For I too am a man under authority (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), <\/em>with soldiers under me. \u00a0I say to this one, \u2018Go\u2019 and he goes, and to another \u2018Come\u2019 and he comes, and to my slave \u2018Do this\u2019 and he does it.\u201d \u00a0When Jesus heard this he was amazed and said to those who followed him, \u201cI tell you the truth, I have not found such faith (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>in anyone15<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>in Israel!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Something about these Roman military men (the proconsul probably came up through the military ranks) and their respect for \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1 touches me.\u00a0 Apparently the proconsul allowed the magician to be a part of his retinue.\u00a0 I\u2019m only guessing, but it seems that the proconsul recognized that his own \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1 ended at the visible world of human governance.\u00a0 He seems to have been intrigued by, or even longed for, the companionship of one whose \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1 reached beyond those limits.\u00a0 Saul and Barnabas proclaimed, not themselves, but Jesus as Lord of this \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1.<\/p>\n

From Paphos Saul and Baranbas set sail and made their way to Perga, the capital of Pamphylia (about 10 miles northeast of present day Antalya, Turkey).\u00a0 John left them and returned to Jerusalem<\/em>.16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 (That detail becomes important later in the story.)\u00a0 Moving on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian<\/em>17<\/sup><\/a> Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. \u00a0After the reading from the law and the prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, \u201cBrothers, if you have any<\/em>18<\/sup><\/a> message of exhortation for the people, speak it.\u201d<\/em>19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

This became part of Paul\u2019s standard operating procedure spreading the Gospel to Gentiles\u2014Roman roads and Jewish synagogues.\u00a0 Paul stood up and began speaking, Men of Israel, and you Gentiles who fear God, listen<\/em>\u202620<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I am noting that so far Paul\u2019s experience with Gentiles and the Gospel as spelled out in Acts is limited to Sergius Paulus and those who have attached themselves to a synagogue.\u00a0 What follows is Paul\u2019s first recorded Gospel proclamation (Acts 13:17-23 NET):<\/p>\n

The God of this people Israel21<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay as foreigners in the country of Egypt,22<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. \u00a0For a period of about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. \u00a0After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave23<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>his people their land as an inheritance. \u00a0All this took about four hundred fifty years.\u00a0 After this he gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. \u00a0Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years. \u00a0After removing him, God raised up David24<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>their king.\u00a0 He testified about him: \u201cI have found David<\/em><\/strong> the son of Jesse to be a man after my heart<\/em><\/strong>, who will accomplish everything I want him to do.\u201d \u00a0From the descendants of this man God brought25<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>to Israel a Savior,26<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Jesus,27<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>just as he promised.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul\u2019s Gospel proclamation began with a history lesson, Israel\u2019s history.\u00a0 Then he turned to the prophets (Acts 13:24-41 NET).<\/p>\n

Before Jesus arrived, John had proclaimed a baptism for repentance to all28<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the people of Israel. \u00a0But while John29<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>was completing his mission, he said repeatedly, \u201cWhat30<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>do you think I am?31<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0I am not he. \u00a0But look, one is coming after me. \u00a0I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!\u201d \u00a0Brothers, descendants of Abraham\u2019s family, and those Gentiles among you who fear God, the message of this salvation has been sent32<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>to us.33<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0For the people who live in Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him, and they fulfilled the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath by condemning him. \u00a0Though they found no basis for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. \u00a0When they had accomplished everything34<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and placed him in a tomb. \u00a0But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem. \u00a0These are now35<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>his witnesses to the people. \u00a0And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors, that this promise God has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm, \u201cYou are my Son; today I have fathered you<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d \u00a0But regarding the fact that he has raised Jesus from the dead, never again to be in a state of decay, God has spoken in this way: \u201cI will give you the holy and trustworthy promises<\/em><\/strong> made to David<\/a>\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(Table<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0Therefore36<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>he also says in another psalm, \u201cYou will not permit your Holy One to experience<\/em><\/strong> decay <\/em><\/strong>(Table<\/a>)<\/em>.\u201d \u00a0For David,37<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>after he had served God\u2019s purpose in his own generation, died, was buried with his ancestors, and experienced decay, but the one whom God raised up did not experience decay. \u00a0Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through this one forgiveness<\/a> of sins is proclaimed to you, and by this one everyone who believes is justified from everything from which the38<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>law of Moses39<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>could not justify you. \u00a0Watch out, then, that what is spoken about by the prophets does not happen to you:40<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u201cLook, you scoffers; be amazed and perish!\u00a0 For I am doing a work in your days, a work41<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>you would never believe, even if someone tells you.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
