45<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. \u00a0He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. \u00a0He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,<\/em> \u201c<strong><em>The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news<\/em><\/strong><em> <strong>to the poor<\/strong>.<\/em>\u00a0 <strong><em>He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>to proclaim the year of the Lord<\/em><\/strong>\u2019<strong><em>s favor<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Originally I avoided this quotation because it wasn\u2019t exactly the NET version of the Old Testament (Isaiah 61:1, 2 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The spirit of the sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has chosen me.\u00a0 He has commissioned me to encourage the poor, to help the brokenhearted, to decree the release of captives, and the freeing of prisoners, to announce the year when the Lord will show his favor\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nor \u1f30\u1f71\u03c3\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03c4\u1fc7 \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u1fb3 (<em>he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted<\/em> in the KJV) is missing from the Greek text of the NET.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Luke+4:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">note<\/a> in the NET reads: \u201cThe majority of mss, especially the later Byzantines, include the phrase \u2018to heal the brokenhearted\u2019 at this point (A \u0398 \u03a8 0102 \u00cb<sup>1<\/sup> \u00cf). The phrase is lacking in several weighty mss (\u05d0 B D L W \u039e \u00cb<sup>13<\/sup> 33 579 700 892* <em>pc<\/em> lat sy<sup>s<\/sup> co), including representatives from both the Alexandrian and Western text types. From the standpoint of external evidence, the omission of the phrase is more likely original. When internal evidence is considered, the shorter reading becomes almost certain. Scribes would be much more prone to add the phrase here to align the text with Isa 61:1, the source of the quotation, than to remove it from the original.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phrase was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Textus_Receptus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">received text<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/text\/luke\/4-18.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f30\u1f70\u03c3\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>) and included in the King James translation.\u00a0 Whether it should or should not be included matters very little to me (since I have access to both and a footnote detailing the reason it was removed), though it would be interesting if Jesus deliberately deleted it from his own reading.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>brokenhearted<\/em> (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03c4\u1fc7 \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u1fb3) hearkens back to David\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miserere_(Allegri)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miserere<\/a> (Psalm 51:17 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/12\/jedidiah-part-6\/#_Table19\">Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The sacrifices God desires are a humble spirit \u2013 O God, a humble and repentant heart you will not reject.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>humble\u00a0heart<\/em> (<em>broken<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Psalms-51-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KJV<\/a>) is \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=51&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_529017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 Both \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perseus.tufts.edu\/hopper\/morph?l=%CF%83%CF%85%CE%BD%CF%84%CE%B5%CF%84%CF%81%CE%B9%CE%BC%CE%BC%E1%BD%B3%CE%BD%CE%B7%CE%BD&amp;la=greek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> are forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03b2\u03c9\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03b2\u03c9<\/a>.\u00a0 If Jesus deliberately deleted this phrase from his quotation, I would take it to mean He did not want his mission to be seen as limited to those who brought the correct sacrifices, the <em>humble spirit<\/em>, the <em>humble and repentant heart<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>In fact this is why we work hard and struggle<\/em>, Paul wrote Timothy (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Timothy+4:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Timothy 4:10 NET<\/a>), <em>because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people<\/em> (\u03c3\u03c9\u03c4\u1f74\u03c1 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u03c9\u03bd), <em>especially of believers<\/em>.\u00a0 But this, too, only creates arguments about who might remove the phrase and why.<\/p>\n<p>The next obvious difference is that \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c4\u03b5\u03b8\u03c1\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u1f10\u03bd \u1f00\u03c6\u1f73\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9 (<strong><em>to set free those who are oppressed<\/em><\/strong>) is not in the Septuagint.\u00a0 I could accept that\u2014<em>to decree the release of captives, and the freeing of prisoners<\/em>\u2014may have seemed redundant to the Rabbis when translating Hebrew to Greek.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2 \u1f00\u03bd\u1f71\u03b2\u03bb\u03b5\u03c8\u03b9\u03bd (<em>and the regaining of sight to the blind<\/em>) is in Jesus\u2019 quotation and the Septuagint but not in a contemporary translation of Hebrew.\u00a0 The Greek word \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) is <em>blind<\/em> in English.\u00a0 When Moses complained that he was <em>slow of speech and slow of tongue<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> <em>The Lord said to him, \u201cWho gave a mouth to man, or who makes a person mute or deaf or seeing or blind<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Exo&amp;c=4&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_54011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u1f79\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2)?\u00a0 <em>Is it not I, the Lord<\/em>?\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But in the law it was written (Leviticus 21:16-21 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Lord spoke to Moses: \u201cTell Aaron, \u2018No man from your descendants throughout their generations who has a physical flaw is to approach to present the food of his God. \u00a0Certainly no man who has a physical flaw is to approach: a blind<em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Lev&amp;c=21&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_111018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u1f78\u03c2, another form of \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em> man, or one who is lame, or one with a slit nose, or a limb too long, or a man who has had a broken leg or arm, or a hunchback, or a dwarf, or one with a spot in his eye, or a festering eruption, or a feverish rash, or a crushed testicle. \u00a0No man from the descendants of Aaron the priest who has a physical flaw may step forward to present the Lord\u2019s gifts; he has a physical flaw, so he must not step forward to present the food of his God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>But if you ignore the Lord your God and are not careful to keep all his commandments and statutes I am giving you today, then all these curses will come upon you in full force<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 One of those curses was to be <em>like the blind<\/em>: <em>You will feel your way along at noon like the blind<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Deu&amp;c=28&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_181029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u1f78\u03c2, another form of \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2) <em>person does in darkness and you will not succeed in anything you do; you will be constantly oppressed and continually robbed, with no one to save you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Masoretes\"><\/a>Did the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/Judaism\/Masoretic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Masoretes<\/a> remove <em>and the regaining of sight to the blind<\/em> because they didn\u2019t wish to be associated with the blind?\u00a0 But they left <em>The Lord<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>; \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>gives sight to the blind<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&amp;c=146&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_624008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c2, another form of \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And, <em>Look, your God<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym\">\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/a><\/em>; \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05db\u05dd) <em>comes to avenge!\u00a0 With divine retribution he comes to deliver you.\u201d \u00a0Then blind<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=35&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_714005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2) <em>eyes will open<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This, too, still remains: <em>I, the Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>; \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4), <em>officially commission you; I take hold of your hand.\u00a0 I protect you and make you a covenant mediator for people, and a light to the nations, to open blind<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/Bible.cfm?b=Isa&amp;c=42&amp;t=LXX#s=t_bibles_721007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2) <em>eyes, to release prisoners from dungeons, those who live in darkness from prisons<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So was it removed simply because <em>Jesus cured many people of diseases, sicknesses, and evil spirits, and granted sight to many who were blind<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2, a form of \u03c4\u03c5\u03c6\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2) and claimed to fulfill that prophecy in the synagogue in Nazareth?<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_vowelpoints\"><\/a>Joseph Gleason, \u201ca priest at Christ the King Orthodox Mission in Omaha, Illinois,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/theorthodoxlife.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/12\/masoretic-text-vs-original-hebrew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blogged<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>For thousands of years, ancient Hebrew was only written with consonants, no vowels. \u00a0When reading these texts, they had to supply all of the vowels from memory,\u00a0based on oral tradition. \u00a0In Hebrew, just like modern languages, vowels can make a big difference. The change of a single vowel can radically change the meaning of a word\u2026.The most extensive change the Masoretes brought to the Hebrew text was the addition of vowel points. \u00a0In an attempt to solidfy for all-time the \u201ccorrect\u201d readings of all the Hebrew Scriptures, the Masoretes added a series of dots to the text, identifying which vowel to use in any given location\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the 2nd century A.D., hundreds of years before the time of the Masoretes, Justin Martyr investigated a number of Old Testament texts in various Jewish synagogues.\u00a0 He ultimately concluded that the Jews who had rejected Christ had also rejected the Septuagint, and were now tampering with the Hebrew Scriptures themselves\u2026 If Justin Martyr\u2019s findings are correct, then it is likely that the Masoretes inherited a Hebrew textual tradition which had already been corrupted with an anti-Christian bias\u2026. Simply by choosing one Hebrew text over another, they were able to subvert the Incarnation, the virgin birth, the deity of Christ, His healing of the blind, His crucifixion, and His salvation of the Gentiles. \u00a0The Jewish scribes were able to edit Jesus out of many important passages, simply by rejecting one Hebrew text, and selecting (or editing) another text instead.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_conscience\"><\/a>I would like to add, raised from infancy with the belief that Jesus was not, could not possibly be, the promised Messiah, and with no knowledge of deliberate textual corruptions, the Masoretes could have done this in good conscience.\u00a0 Joseph Gleason concluded:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>It would seem that the Septuagint (LXX) translation is\u2026a more faithful representation of the original Hebrew Scriptures.\u00a0 Perhaps that is why Jesus and the apostles frequently quoted from the Septuagint, and accorded it full authority as the inspired Word of God.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m not prepared to go that far.\u00a0 I was happy to find a corrective to my own conclusion that Jesus and Paul were such inept scholars they couldn\u2019t even quote a passage of Scripture accurately.\u00a0 Clearly, the Septuagint I&#8217;m using was not what Jesus read in the synagogue in Nazareth.\u00a0 But He wasn\u2019t reading from the Masoretic text either.\u00a0 Here is the comparison of the King James Version:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Jesus (KJV)<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">KJV<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">The Spirit of the Lord\u00a0<em>is<\/em> upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,\u00a0To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Luke 4:18, 19 (KJV)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">The Spirit of the Lord GOD\u00a0<em>is<\/em> upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to\u00a0<em>them that are<\/em> bound;\u00a0To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Isaiah 61:1, 2a<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 quotation is much more agreeable with Isaiah 61 in the KJV.\u00a0 But if the \u201cKing James Version is the infallible Word of God\u201d Jesus inserted <em>and recovering of sight to the blind<\/em> into the middle of his reading of Isaiah 61:1.\u00a0 Luke didn\u2019t record anyone disputing it with Him at the time (Luke 4:20-29 KJV):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And <em>[Jesus]<\/em> closed the book, and he gave\u00a0<em>it<\/em> again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.<br \/>\nAnd he began to say unto them,\u00a0This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.<br \/>\nAnd all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph\u2019s son?<br \/>\nAnd he said unto them,\u00a0Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.<br \/>\nAnd he said,\u00a0Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.<br \/>\nBut I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;<br \/>\nBut unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta,\u00a0<em>a city<\/em> of Sidon, unto a woman\u00a0<em>that was<\/em> a widow.<br \/>\nAnd many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
