Part 59"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The most obvious translation of <em>Do not lag in zeal<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03c4\u1fc7 \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc7 \u03bc\u1f74 \u1f40\u03ba\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u1f77) is something like \u201cthis haste not slothful.\u201d\u00a0 <em>Thus we urged Titus<\/em>, Paul wrote the Corinthians, <em>that, just as he had previously begun this work, so also he should complete this act of kindness for you. \u00a0But as you excel in everything \u2013 in faith, in speech, in knowledge, and in all eagerness<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ae\">\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc7<\/a>) <em>and in the love from us that is in you \u2013 make sure that you excel in this act of kindness too. \u00a0I am not saying this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love by comparison with the eagerness<\/em> (\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc6\u03c2, a form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ae) <em>of others<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The translation of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc7 and \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc6\u03c2 as <em>eagerness<\/em> above is not wrong if I recognize that Paul\u2019s concern was the timeliness of completing <em>this act of kindness<\/em> rather than an emotional affect.\u00a0 Certainly Paul was also interested in the Corinthians\u2019 emotional affect, but he used a different word for that (2 Corinthians 8:10b-12 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is to your advantage, since you made a good start last year both in your giving and your desire to give, to finish what you started, so that just as you wanted to do it eagerly <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, you can also complete it according to your means. \u00a0For if the eagerness <em>(\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1)<\/em> is present, the gift itself is acceptable according to whatever one has, not according to what he does not have.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Greek words \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc7 and \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc6\u03c2 seem to refer here to the fact that the Corinthians <em>made a good start last year<\/em> but had failed thus far <em>to finish what<\/em> [they] <em>started<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>I know your eagerness<\/em> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1) <em>to help<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> Paul assured them. \u00a0The Corinthians\u2019 \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1 and \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd were not at issue.\u00a0 It was \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc7 and \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc6\u03c2 they lacked or needed to address (2 Corinthians 9:2b-4 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I keep boasting to the Macedonians about this eagerness of yours, that Achaia has been ready to give since last year, and your zeal <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b6\u1fc6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2\">\u03b6\u1fc6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> to participate has stirred up most of them. \u00a0But I am sending these brothers so that our boasting about you may not be empty in this case, so that you may be ready just as I kept telling them. \u00a0For if any of the Macedonians should come with me and find that you are not ready to give, we would be humiliated (not to mention you) by this confidence we had in you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a description of love \u201cthis haste not slothful\u201d makes a good deal of sense.\u00a0 A feigned or hypocritical love, the love of an actor, wearing a false face, speaking another\u2019s lines, will tend to be too fast or too slow in action.\u00a0 While the <em>Love<\/em>\u2026<em>without hypocrisy<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03c5\u03c0\u1f79\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>),<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> the fruit of the Holy Spirit, is timely, at a measured pace, this haste not slothful, full of the recognition that love unfeigned lasts a lifetime and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis haste not slothful,\u201d however, makes a terrible rule.\u00a0 Here is a <a of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ae) abstractly as <em>diligent<\/em> or <em>diligence<\/em>: <em>if it is leadership, he must do so with diligence<\/em> (\u1f41 \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03ca\u03c3\u03c4\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2 \u1f10\u03bd \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1fc7).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I do question translating it <em>zeal<\/em> or <em>zealousness<\/em>.\u00a0 Paul did not write \u03b6\u1fc6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2.\u00a0 Matthew, Mark and John recounted two different occasions when Jesus demonstrated a godly of zeal and love: <em>Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline or with love <\/em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u1fc3, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) <em>and a spirit of gentleness?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And though I have no doubt that Jesus consciously fulfilled Scripture, the incidents were also remarkable because they were uncharacteristic and <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+12:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">atypical<\/a> of Him.\u00a0 The religious mind is all too eager to consider <em>hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions<\/em>, and <em>envying<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> righteous indignation or zeal for God.\u00a0 Paul gave no law encouraging the religious mind not to lag in this kind of <em>zeal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The description continues, <em>be enthusiastic in spirit<\/em> (\u03c4\u1ff7 \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9 \u03b6\u1f73\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 [a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b6\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03b6\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>]), literally \u201cthis spirit boils\u201d or \u201cthis boiling spirit.\u201d\u00a0 If I put it back together I have, this haste not slothful, this boiling spirit.\u00a0 These words make sense if applied to <em>a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>He was an eloquent speaker, well-versed in the scriptures.\u00a0 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm<\/em> (\u03b6\u1f73\u03c9\u03bd, another form of \u03b6\u03ad\u03c9) <em>he spoke and taught accurately the facts about Jesus <\/em>(KJV: <em>the Lord<\/em>)<em>, although he knew only the baptism of John<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The danger of this kind of enthusiasm wasn\u2019t actually revealed until the next chapter of Acts:\u00a0 Paul found some disciples in Ephesus <em>and said to them, \u201cDid you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?\u201d \u00a0They replied, \u201cNo, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a> It gives me a different impression when Apollos <em>began to speak out fearlessly <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03b1\u1fe4\u1fe5\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u03c0\u03b1\u1fe4\u1fe5\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <em>in the synagogue<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I contrast it to Paul and Barnabas in <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Acts+14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iconium<\/a>, \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03b1\u03b6\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 \u1f10\u03c0\u1f76 \u03c4\u1ff7 \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u1ff3 (literally, \u201cspeaking freely upon the Lord\u201d).\u00a0 Here, I think, Paul and Barnabas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+14%3A3&amp;version=NASB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relied<\/a> on the Lord rather than their own \u201cfearlessness\u201d and He <em>testified to the message of his grace, granting miraculous signs and wonders to be performed through their hands<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Priscilla and Aquila, who had spent time with Paul,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> slowed Apollos\u2019 haste (without dampening his enthusiasm): <em>when Priscilla and Aquila heard<\/em> <em>him<\/em> [<em>speak out fearlessly<\/em> <em>in the synagogue<\/em>], <em>they took him aside and explained the way of God to him more accurately<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Apollos traveled from Ephesus to Achaia.\u00a0 <em>When he arrived, he assisted greatly those who had believed by grace<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> <em>the sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, thieves, the greedy, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote3sym\">drunkards<\/a>, the verbally abusive, and swindlers<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a> who had responded to Paul\u2019s presentation of the Gospel.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 (<em>No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, <\/em>Jesus said, <em>and I will raise him up at the last day<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>)\u00a0 Apollos greatly assisted them, not by browbeating them to live better lives, but by preoccupying those who might have done so: <em>for he refuted the Jews<\/em> (\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1f77\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2, a form of \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <em>vigorously in public debate, demonstrating from the scriptures that the Christ was Jesus<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This haste not slothful, this boiling spirit, <em>serve <\/em>(\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9\">\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<em> the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/11\/jedidiah-part-5\/#sdfootnote16sym\">Lord<\/a><\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/03\/romans-part-59\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a> or <em>serving the Lord<\/em>,<a leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves<\/em> (\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03b1, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2) <em>to righteousness leading to the work I do to please my employer, I will think that I am obeying a rule: <em>serve the Lord<\/em>.\u00a0 If on the other hand I think of <em>serving<\/em> (\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) <em>the Lord<\/em> or being <em>enslaved<\/em> to the Lord as something more like being <em>enslaved<\/em> (\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) <em>to various passions and desires<\/em>, well, that\u2019s more like what I did on the weekends after work.<\/p>\n<p>And I think that is more like the \u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 Paul described here, the natural (<em>super-<\/em>natural) outpouring of this boiling spirit.\u00a0 In fact, I should work for my employer in this same way and not like I used to work before I was enslaved to the Lord.\u00a0 <em>Slaves, obey<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>your human <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fruit of the Holy Spirit<\/a>: <em>For the love of Christ controls <\/em>(\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u1f73\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9, a form of <a
