the breaking of bread and to prayer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Acts 2:42 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The Greek word translated <em>rejoice<\/em> is \u03c7\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9\">\u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 The aspect of the fruit of the Spirit that fulfills this rejoicing is <em>joy<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\">\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f70<\/a>).\u00a0 <em>Joy <\/em>(\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f71)<em> and gladness will come to you<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> an angel of the Lord prophesied to Zechariah the priest.\u00a0 He and his wife Elizabeth <em>did not have a child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both very old<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Zechariah<\/em>\u2026<em>your prayer has been heard, <\/em>the angel said,<em> and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son; you will name him John<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clearly \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f71 was used to name this ordinary joy, but I won\u2019t spend much time on that.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have any problem rejoicing when I get my way, when I get what I want.\u00a0 To <em>rejoice in hope<\/em> indicates that I rejoice prior to that time.\u00a0 <em>For the joy<\/em> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1fb6\u03c2, a form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f71) <em>set out for him<\/em> [Jesus] <em>endured<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f73\u03bc\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the cross, disregarding its shame<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve misunderstood this verse often enough, thinking that <em>joy<\/em> was simply a euphemism for a <em>seat at the right hand of the throne<\/em> <em>of God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And so, enduring difficulties was a rational calculation based on faith in a given outcome (e.g., I can endure the University because in the end I will get a degree and a higher paying job).\u00a0 I have no real reason to ignore faith (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) here.\u00a0 Faith is another aspect of the fruit of Christ\u2019s Spirit.\u00a0 But I\u2019m not a fun guy to be around when I\u2019m enduring difficult circumstances by faith in a rational outcome.\u00a0 And I certainly won\u2019t do any rejoicing until I get what I want.<\/p>\n<p>More to the point, perhaps, a <em>seat at the right hand of the throne<\/em> <em>of God<\/em> offered Jesus no upward mobility: <em>And now, Father<\/em>, He prayed, <em>glorify me at your side with the glory I had with you before the world was created<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0It was simply a matter of getting back to where He belonged, not much incentive to endure <em>the cross, disregarding its shame<\/em>.\u00a0 It leads me to believe that <em>the joy<\/em> <em>set out for him<\/em> was much more than a euphemism for something else.<\/p>\n<p><em>I have told you these things so that my joy<\/em> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f70) <em>may be in you, and your joy<\/em> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f70) <em>may be complete<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here is a statement, if I will hear it, that <em>the joy set out for<\/em> Jesus may be in me, and his joy will \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03c9\u03b8\u1fc7 (or, fulfill) my joy.\u00a0 Interestingly, this statement resides in a passage about bearing fruit (John 15:5, 7-9 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_Table14\">Table<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I am the vine; you are the branches.\u00a0 The one who remains in me \u2013 and I in him \u2013 bears much fruit <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing\u2026If you remain in me and my words remain in you, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#sdfootnote15sym\">ask<\/a> whatever you want, and it will be done for you. \u00a0My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em> and show that you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#sdfootnote16sym\">are<\/a> my disciples.\u00a0 Just as the Father has loved <em>(\u1f20\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> me, I have also loved <em>(\u1f20\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9)<\/em> you; remain in my love <em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u1fc3, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>But the fruit<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03c2) <em>of the Spirit is love <\/em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7)<em>, joy<\/em> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f70), <em>peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness <\/em>(\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2)<em>, gentleness, and self-control. \u00a0Against such things there is no law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I would love to say that I heard these words and was transformed by them.\u00a0 But what I heard was, <em>If you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father\u2019s commandments and remain in his love<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And I reasoned that there was no way around it, a sinner like I am must man-up and out-Pharisee the Pharisees or <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+15:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">burn<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> in hell for all eternity: <em>For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Failing that, I heard, <em>My commandment is this \u2013 to love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9) <em>one another just as I have loved<\/em> (\u1f20\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9) <em>you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Eureka!\u00a0 I found it, I thought.\u00a0 A sinner like I am can\u2019t out-Pharisee the Pharisees by trying to keep rules; a sinner like I am out-Pharisees the Pharisees by trying to love like Jesus: <em>Love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7) <em>does no wrong to a neighbor.\u00a0 Therefore love <\/em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7) <em>is the fulfillment<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of the law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>No one has greater love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7) than this, Jesus continued,<em> that one lays down his life for his friends<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As a hypocrite I thought like an actor: I should imitate Jesus\u2019 love.\u00a0 Failing that, I began to hear again (John 15:14-17 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You are my friends if you do what I command you. \u00a0I no longer call you slaves, because the slave does not understand <em>(\u03bf\u1f36\u03b4\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9\">\u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> what his master is doing. \u00a0But I have called you friends, because I have revealed <em>(\u1f10\u03b3\u03bd\u1f7d\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03c9\">\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> to you everything I heard from my Father. \u00a0You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em>, fruit <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03c2)<\/em> that remains, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. \u00a0This I command you \u2013 to love <em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9)<\/em> one another.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There it was again, <em>to go and bear fruit<\/em>.\u00a0 Okay, if imitation isn\u2019t the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phrases.org.uk\/meanings\/imitation-is-the-sincerest-form-of-flattery.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sincerest form of flattery<\/a>, what do You want?\u00a0 <em>to love one another just as I have loved you<\/em>.\u00a0 How did You love?\u00a0 <em>I made known your name to them<\/em>, Jesus prayed to his Father, <em>and I will continue to make it known, so that the love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7) <em>you have loved<\/em> (\u1f20\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9) <em>me with may be in them, and I may be in them.<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>\u00a0But the fruit <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03c2) <em>of the Spirit is love<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7)\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There it was, hiding in plain sight.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a \u201cmodern\u201d translation: <em>And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare\u00a0it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It was there from the beginning of the translation of the Bible into English.\u00a0 Why was it so difficult to hear?\u00a0 Why did I doubt it?\u00a0 My answer to that question is the <em>religious mind<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way that leads to death<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>I have great confidence<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03b1\u1fe4\u1fe5\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03b1\u1fe4\u1fe5\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <em>in you; I take great pride<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03cd\u03c7\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c7\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>on <em>confidence<\/em> he wrote about was a \u201cfreedom in speaking\u201d an \u201cunreservedness in speech,\u201d according to the definition of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1 in the NET.\u00a0 I think this refers to the <em>boasting<\/em> he wrote about later in the same letter: <em>I keep boasting<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <em>to the Macedonians about this eagerness of yours, that Achaia has been ready to give since last year, and your zeal to participate has stirred up most of them<\/em>.<a find that you are not ready to give, we would be humiliated<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014he was <em>overflowing<\/em> with <em>the joy set out for<\/em> Jesus.\u00a0 The Greek word \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bb\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9 (a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) translated <em>encouragement<\/em> relates to the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f71\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a> relates to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1\">\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) love <em>is not glad<\/em> (or, <em>does not rejoice<\/em>)<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a> <em>about<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u1f76, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03af\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03af<\/a>).\u00a0 <em>The person who speaks on his own authority<\/em>, Jesus said, <em>desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f77\u03b1) <em>in him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/09\/08\/romans-part-60\/#_ftn28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In Greek it reads, \u1f41 \u1f00\u03c6\u1fbf \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u1ff6\u03bd \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd \u03b4\u1f79\u03be\u03b1\u03bd \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd \u1f30\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd \u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6 (literally, \u201cthis from himself speaks the honor his own seeks\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>I realize Jesus is <em>the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him<\/em>\u2026<em>a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness<\/em> <em>in him<\/em>..\u00a0 Still, I find some guidance here for Bible study.\u00a0 School is easy if you seek to make good grades.\u00a0 All that stuff the professor jabbers on about all semester is the answer to the questions on the tests.\u00a0 Remember it, feed it back, get a good grade.\u00a0 The kiss of death is to actually become interested in the subject matter.\u00a0 When that happens to me I get my own ideas about the questions and their answers, and I tend to <em>speak from myself<\/em>.\u00a0 In other words, I disagree with the professor\u2019s answers to his or her own questions on tests.<\/p>\n<p>The academic alternative to <em>speaking from myself<\/em> is to quote recognized authorities.\u00a0 That\u2019s how I began my Bible study adventure.\u00a0 But eventually it dawned on me that the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/02\/06\/romans-part-55\/\">\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1f77\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) did honor for Jesus and his Father, <em>Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God \u2013 he has seen the Father<\/em>.<a summons the things that do not yet exist as though they already do<\/em>.<a
