Part 67"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m still considering, <em>Rejoice in hope, endure in suffering, persist in prayer<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> as a description of love rather than as rules to obey.\u00a0 This essay picks up where I left off in the previous essay considering Phinehas\u2019 background and role in events at <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Judges+20:28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gibeah<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Now you have rescued the Israelites from the Lord\u2019s <\/em>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>judgment<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> Phinehas told the descendents of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh after hearing their <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Joshua+22:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defense<\/a>.\u00a0 It may not be obvious in the NET but it was a very poor choice of words: <em>Now you have delivered<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2tsal\">n\u00e2tsal<\/a><\/em>, \u05d4\u05e6\u05dc\u05ea\u05dd) <em>the children of Israel out of the hand <\/em>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_y\u00e2d\">y\u00e2d<\/a><\/em>, \u05de\u05d9\u05d3) <em>of the\u00a0Lord <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is not possible according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Deuteronomy+32:36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, <em>Nor\u00a0is there any who<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bcayin\">\u02bcayin<\/a><\/em>, \u05d5\u05d0\u05d9\u05df; literally, <em>nothing<\/em>) <em>can deliver<\/em> (<em>n\u00e2tsal<\/em>, \u05de\u05e6\u05d9\u05dc) <em>from My hand<\/em> (<em>y\u00e2d<\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Beyond that, it was <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> who delivered Israel from the hand of their enemies.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>),<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> Jacob prayed.\u00a0 <em>Rescue <\/em>(<em>n\u00e2tsal<\/em>, \u05d4\u05e6\u05d9\u05dc\u05e0\u05d9) <em>me, I pray, from the hand<\/em> (<em>y\u00e2d<\/em>, \u05de\u05d9\u05d3) <em>of my brother Esau<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>The Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em><em>, <\/em>\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<em>) <\/em><em>said <\/em>[to Moses], <em>\u201cI have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt. \u00a0I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. \u00a0I have come down to deliver<\/em> (<em>n\u00e2tsal<\/em>, \u05dc\u05d4\u05e6\u05d9\u05dc\u05d5) <em>them from the hand<\/em> (<em>y\u00e2d<\/em>, \u05de\u05d9\u05d3) <em>of the Egyptians<\/em>\u2026\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Jethro rejoiced because of all the good that the Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>had done for Israel, whom he had delivered<\/em> (<em>n\u00e2tsal<\/em>, \u05d4\u05e6\u05d9\u05dc\u05d5) <em>from the hand<\/em> (<em>y\u00e2d<\/em>, \u05de\u05d9\u05d3) <em>of Egypt<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_sensitive\"><\/a>I\u2019m particularly sensitive to this because I believed that Jesus delivered me from the hand of Jehovah (though I probably didn\u2019t think about it in exactly those words).\u00a0 My situation became more acute when I was too old to pray to Jesus but told to pray to \u201cour Father in heaven\u201d instead.\u00a0 I was fairly compliant as a child with things over which I had control.\u00a0 So I prayed to \u201cour Father in heaven.\u201d \u00a0But I couldn\u2019t draw near to Him, not to Jehovah, the one who wanted to condemn me to hell for failing to keep his law.<\/p>\n<p>Was deliverance from the hand of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> simply a slip of Phinehas\u2019 tongue?\u00a0 After all even in the New Testament the author of the letter to the Hebrews believed that it <em>is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Or did Phinehas\u2019 word choice accurately reflect his attitude?\u00a0 David\u2019s attitude by contrast, even regarding punishment, was, <em>Please let us fall into the hand <\/em>(<em>y\u00e2d<\/em>, \u05d1\u05d9\u05d3) <em>of the\u00a0Lord <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<em>, for His mercies\u00a0are great; but do not let me fall into the hand <\/em>(<em>y\u00e2d<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d1\u05d9\u05d3) <em>of man<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Had futility crept into Phinehas\u2019 thoughts, a darkening of his senseless heart (Romans 1:21 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/25\/romans-part-2\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>)?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give him <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/25\/romans-part-2\/#sdfootnote4sym\">thanks<\/a>, but they became futile in their thoughts and their senseless hearts were darkened.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These words were penned by a Benjaminite<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> who <em>was extremely zealous for the traditions of<\/em> [his] <em>ancestors<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> until Jesus showed him a <em>fresh and living way that<\/em> [Jesus] <em>inaugurated for us<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> <em>not based on the letter but on the Spirit, for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I don\u2019t fully understand how the Holy Spirit empowered people in the Old Testament (which is not to say that I fully understand Him in the New).<\/p>\n<p>Samson is perhaps the most confusing example: <em>Samson<\/em>\u2026<em>grew and the<\/em> <em>Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em><em>, <\/em>\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>empowered him. \u00a0The Lord\u2019s<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em><em>, <\/em>\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>spirit began to control him in Mahaneh Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.<\/em><em> \u00a0Samson went down to Timnah, where a Philistine girl caught his eye<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Though his parents protested his choice, the text is clear that <em>his father and mother did not realize this was the Lord\u2019s<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em><em>, <\/em>\u05de\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>doing, because he was looking for an opportunity to stir up trouble with the Philistines<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Samson\u2019s choice and great strength are not the <em>love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> with which I am more familiar.<\/p>\n<p>I turn to David again: <em>Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me<\/em><em>.\u00a0 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Perhaps Phinehas\u2019 statement\u2014<em>Today we know that the Lord is among us, because you have not disobeyed the Lord in this<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014is a similar recognition that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> presence, his Holy Spirit, creates the clean heart and steadfast spirit that effected righteousness among the descendants of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh.\u00a0 Still, Moses wished for more for the descendants of Israel: <em>I wish that all the Lord\u2019s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019m not sure whether Phinehas made a poor word choice or was becoming futile in his thoughts (e.g., actually intending to thank or praise the descendants of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh for delivering him from the hand of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>), whether he was fearing <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> or afraid of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, drawing near or fleeing in his heart and mind.\u00a0 But I want to keep it as an open question as I move from the failure to resolve matters at Gibeah as a police function to war: <em>The Benjaminites came from their cities and assembled at Gibeah to make war against the Israelites<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> <em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"213\">Vengeance<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"213\">War in Gibeah<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"213\">Divided Kingdom<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"213\">The Lord spoke to Moses: \u201cExact vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Numbers 31:1, 2a (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"213\">The Israelites went up to Bethel and asked God, \u201cWho should lead the charge against the Benjaminites?\u201d\u00a0 The Lord said, \u201cJudah should lead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Judges 20:18 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"213\">God told Shemaiah the prophet, \u201cSay this to King Rehoboam son of Solomon of Judah, and to all Judah and Benjamin, as well as the rest of the people, \u2018The Lord says this: \u201cDo not attack and make war with your brothers, the Israelites.\u00a0 Each of you go home, for I have caused this [Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Kings+12:19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rebellion<\/a> against Judah and Benjamin] to happen\u201d\u2019\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/16\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-4\/#_Table8\">Table<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">1 Kings 12:22-24a (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I\u2019ve placed the war in Gibeah between <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> vengeance on the Midianites and his prohibition of Judah declaring war on the northern kingdom of Israel.\u00a0 The Israelites assumed they were called to war against Benjamin and asked <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> which tribe should lead.\u00a0 The war was neither initiated nor forbidden by y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h.\u00a0 <em>Judah should lead<\/em>, He said.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"213\">Vengeance<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"213\">War in Gibeah<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"213\">Divided Kingdom<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"213\">So Moses sent them to the war&#8230; They fought against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses, and they killed every male.\u00a0 They killed the kings of Midian in addition to those slain \u2013 Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba \u2013 five Midianite kings.\u00a0 They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Numbers 31:6-8 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"213\">The Israelites got up the next morning and moved against Gibeah.\u00a0 The men of Israel marched out to fight Benjamin; they arranged their battle lines against Gibeah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Judges 20:19, 20 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"213\">They obeyed the Lord and went home as the Lord had ordered them to do [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/16\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-4\/#_Table8\">Table<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">1 Kings 12:24b (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Assuming that Judah actually did lead Israel at Gibeah, <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> was obeyed in all three examples.\u00a0 Since neither Judah nor the northern kingdom of Israel suffered any casualties in a war that didn\u2019t happen I switched to Ai for purposes of comparison below.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"213\">Vengeance<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"213\">War in Gibeah<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"213\">Ai<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"213\">Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders over thousands and the commanders over hundreds, approached Moses and said to him, \u201cYour servants have taken a count of the men who were in the battle, who were under our authority, and not one is missing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Numbers 31:48, 49 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"213\">The Benjaminites attacked from Gibeah and struck down twenty-two thousand Israelites that day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Judges 20:21 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"213\">The Lord was furious with the Israelites.\u00a0 Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai\u2026 So about three thousand men went up, but they fled from the men of Ai.\u00a0 The men of Ai killed about thirty-six of them\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Joshua 7:1b, 2a, 4, 5a (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Was <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> over 600 times more furious with Israel at Gibeah than at Ai?\u00a0 Okay, proportionally speaking, was He four and one half times more furious?\u00a0 According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/Judaism\/Zohar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zohar<\/a>, \u201cGod was unwilling that other sinners of Israel should be the instruments for punishing them [the descendants of Benjamin], and therefore numbers of them fell time after time until all the sinners in the attacking army had perished, and there were left only those more righteous ones who could more appropriately execute the work.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a> If I had only the story of the battle at Ai to go on, I might agree with this assessment.\u00a0 But I have more Scripture that the writer(s) of the Zohar rejected (Luke 13:1-5 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now there were some present on that occasion who told <em>[Jesus]<\/em> about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. \u00a0He answered them, \u201cDo you think these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered these things? \u00a0No, I tell you! \u00a0But unless you repent, you will all perish as well! \u00a0Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower in Siloam fell on them, do you think they were worse offenders than all the others who live in Jerusalem? \u00a0No, I tell you! \u00a0But unless you repent you will all perish as well!\u201d<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So apart from an explicit statement of Scripture (as in the case of Achan<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>) I assume that the opinion in the Zohar is unwarranted.\u00a0 The reason given in the text has nothing to do with <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, rather there <em>were seven hundred specially-trained left-handed soldiers<\/em> among the Benjaminites. \u00a0<em>Each one could sling a stone and hit even the smallest target<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">War in Gibeah<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Ai<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">The Israelite army took heart (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_ch\u00e2zaq\">ch\u00e2zaq<\/a><\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05ea\u05d7\u05d6\u05e7) and once more arranged their battle lines, in the same place where they had taken their positions the day before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Judges 20:22 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\u2026 and chased them from in front of the city gate all the way to the fissures and defeated them on the steep slope.\u00a0 The people\u2019s courage melted away like water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Joshua 7:5b right;\">Joshua 7:6 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>At Gibeah the Israelites suffered 22,000 casualties, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/11\/22\/romans-part-64\/#_grabbed\">grabbed<\/a><\/em> or <em>persuaded<\/em> themselves and reformed their battle lines while the Israelites at Ai suffered 36 casualties and were routed.\u00a0 The reason is given in the text: <em>The men of Israel (not counting Benjamin) had mustered four hundred thousand sword-wielding soldiers, every one an experienced warrior<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At Ai Joshua prayed, <em>O,<\/em> <em>Master<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u0103d\u00f4n\u00e2y\">\u02bc\u0103d\u00f4n\u00e2y<\/a><\/em>, \u05d0\u05d3\u05e0\u05d9),<em> href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a> (along with his <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Joshua+7:15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">family<\/a>) followed this.\u00a0 In Gibeah (Judges 20:23b-25 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They asked the Lord, \u201cShould we again march out to fight the Benjaminites, our brothers?\u201d\u00a0 The Lord said, \u201cAttack them!\u201d\u00a0 So the Israelites marched toward the Benjaminites the next day.\u00a0 The Benjaminites again attacked them from Gibeah and struck down eighteen thousand sword-wielding Israelite soldiers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Israel was no longer <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/02\/romans-part-66\/#_weapon\">weapon of judgment<\/a><\/em>:\u00a0<em>The Lord was furious with Israel.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThis nation has violated the terms of the agreement I made with their ancestors by disobeying me. \u00a0So I will no longer remove before them any of the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then I consider the trajectory from <em>weapon of judgment<\/em> to <em>objects of mercy<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn32\"><sup>[32]<\/sup><\/a> (Matthew 5:38-42 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou have heard that it was said, \u2018<strong><em>An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth<\/em><\/strong>.\u2019 \u00a0But I say to you, do not resist the href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Romans-9-21_9-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KJV<\/a>: <em>vessels<\/em>) <em>of mercy<\/em> under occupation of a very effective Roman government.\u00a0 <em>In those days Israel had no king<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn33\"><sup>[33]<\/sup><\/a> the story of the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Judges+19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Levite and his concubine<\/a> began, addressing not merely the lack of a hereditary monarchy but the fact that Israel had rejected<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn34\"><sup>[34]<\/sup><\/a> <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> as their king.\u00a0 I think what is witnessed at the battle of Gibeah is two well-trained armies fighting in their own strength, without <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>aid or interference.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn35\"><sup>[35]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The outcome is a foregone conclusion as long as the larger army continues to fight.\u00a0 But at first the Israelites fought for principle while the Benjaminites fought for their lives.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn36\"><sup>[36]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Apart from miraculous intervention Phinehas\u2019 role was reduced to providing encouragement and officiating at sacrifices.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn37\"><sup>[37]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0He is virtually nonexistent in the text.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, I\u2019m threading the eye of a subtle needle here.\u00a0 I recognize that the Israelites intended to go to war by the throw of the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Judges+20:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dice<\/a>.\u00a0 But I accept <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> acquiescence (at a minimum) because the Scripture reads: <em>The Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>said, \u201cJudah should lead\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn38\"><sup>[38]<\/sup><\/a> and, <em>The Lord <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>said, \u201cAttack them!\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn39\"><sup>[39]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0At the same time I\u2019m hearing, <em>The Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>said, \u201cAttack, for tomorrow I will hand<\/em> (<em>y\u00e2d<\/em>, \u05d1\u05d9\u05d3\u05da) <em>them over to you\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn40\"><sup>[40]<\/sup><\/a> and, <em>The Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>annihilated Benjamin before Israel<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn41\"><sup>[41]<\/sup><\/a> as Phinehas\u2019 manner of speaking, expressing <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> foreknowledge and it\u2019s fulfillment, and not necessarily <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> direct involvement as when Israel was his <em>weapon of judgment<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If I were able to interview all the survivors, I take it for granted that I\u2019d hear many battlefield stories of individual and small group salvations credited to <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> intercession.\u00a0 I don\u2019t doubt that many of those stories would be true examples of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> intercession.\u00a0 Nor do I doubt that I would hear true salvation stories from both opposing armies. \u00a0But I doubt that Israel was <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s weapon of judgment<\/em> against Benjamin as they were against Midian.<\/p>\n<p>The next day Israel followed the same tactic<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn42\"><sup>[42]<\/sup><\/a> against Benjamin that Joshua commanded at Ai.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn43\"><sup>[43]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if this came from Joshua\u2019s writing, Phinehas\u2019 memory or is evidence of the development of a professional military command structure with an institutional memory.\u00a0 The Benjaminites apparently did not read Joshua, did not have Phinehas as an advisor or did not have a professional military command structure with an institutional memory and fell for the ruse.\u00a0 The <em>Israelites struck down that day 25,100 sword-wielding Benjaminites<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn44\"><sup>[44]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Counting the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Judges+20:47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">600 survivors<\/a> they had only killed 1,000 in the previous two days of fighting while they suffered 40,000 casualties.<\/p>\n<p>Israel apparently left the survivors alone for <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Judges+20:47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">four months<\/a>.\u00a0 <em>The Israelites regretted what had happened to their brother Benjamin<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/12\/16\/romans-part-67\/#_ftn45\"><sup>[45]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Why, O Lord God of Israel, has this happened in Israel?<\/em> they prayed.\u00a0 <em>An entire tribe has disappeared from Israel today!<\/em><a
