In Item #1 the Septuagint and the parallel Greek text are identical except for accent marks.1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 An interesting sidebar is Psalm 19:12-14.\u00a0 The Psalm begins, The heavens declare the glory of God<\/em>.2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The song\u2019s second verse, so to speak, begins, The law of the Lord is perfect<\/em>.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 From then on David praised God\u2019s law and concluded, Yes, your servant finds moral guidance there; those who obey them receive a rich reward<\/em>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Gospel message followed that in the King James translation, and I include the NET side by side for comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

In the KJV David recognized his inability to keep the law and asked God to cleanse his secret faults and to keep him back from presumptuous sins.\u00a0 In the more contemporary translation of the Hebrew in the NET it sounds like David tried to strike a special deal with God to more or less ignore the sins he was unaware of.\u00a0 There is still a hint of the Gospel in his faith that God would keep him from flagrant sins. \u00a0But it almost sounds like a question: Surely that will be good enough, won\u2019t it? \u00a0Addressing the Lord as my strength and my redeemer<\/em> is more reminiscent to me of Paul\u2019s insight (the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort \u2013 for the sake of his good pleasure \u2013 is God<\/a><\/em>)5<\/sup><\/a> than my sheltering rock and my redeemer<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The differences in Item #2 are mostly related to changing the verse from the third person them<\/em> (\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2) to the second person you<\/em> (\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c2).\u00a0 Also, two different forms of I<\/em> are used, \u03ba\u1f00\u03b3\u1f7c in the Septuagint and \u03b5\u03b3\u03c9 in the parallel Greek text.<\/p>\n

I assume Paul quoted Isaiah 65:1 by memory in Item #3.\u00a0 The clauses are reversed and so are \u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd (seek for me<\/em>) and \u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03c9\u03c4\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd (ask for me<\/em>).\u00a0 So the Septuagint would translate something like, I became well known to those who did not seek me; I was found by those who did not ask for me<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Septuagint in Item #4 began \u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03c0\u1f73\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1 \u03c4\u1f70\u03c2 \u03c7\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c1\u1f71\u03c2 \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5 (I held out my hands<\/em>) \u1f45\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd \u1f21\u03bc\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd (all day long<\/em>).\u00a0 The parallel Greek text began \u03bf\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd (all day long<\/em>) \u03b5\u03be\u03b5\u03c0\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2 \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5 (I held out my hands<\/em>).\u00a0 And still today in a contemporary translation of the Hebrew Isaiah 65:1-5 (NET) reads:<\/p>\n

Here I am!\u201d to a nation that did not invoke my name [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 I spread out my hands all day long to my rebellious people, who lived in a way that is morally unacceptable, and who did what they desired [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0These people continually and blatantly offend me as they sacrifice in their sacred orchards and burn incense on brick altars. \u00a0They sit among the tombs and keep watch all night long.\u00a0 They eat pork, and broth from unclean sacrificial meat is in their pans. \u00a0They say, \u201cKeep to yourself! Don\u2019t get near me, for I am holier than you!\u201d\u00a0 These people are like smoke in my nostrils, like a fire that keeps burning all day long.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Septuagint\u2014\u201cyour slave guards them,\u201d thy servant keeps to them<\/em>\u2014has more of a definitional flavor than the stick or carrot approach<\/a> of the Masoretic text \u2014by them is thy servant warned<\/em>, those who obey them receive a rich reward<\/em>.\u00a0 The Septuagint here is more akin to Jesus\u2019 promise\u2014If you love me, you will obey my commandments<\/em>6<\/sup><\/a>\u2014discussing the Holy Spirit<\/a>.\u00a0 I tend to favor it’s translation of this psalm of David<\/a> because of his own relationship to the Holy Spirit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Another version of the Tanakh<\/a> was much closer to the Septuagint: Also Your servant was careful with them; for in observing them there is great reward<\/em>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Apparently \u05e0\u05b4\u05d6\u05b0\u05d4\u05b8\u05a3\u05e8 can mean both<\/a> depending on context and vowel points<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>NET note 38<\/a> acknowledged: \u201cHeb \u2018declare me innocent from hidden [things],\u2019 i.e., sins.\u201d\u00a0 But still, it was rendered: Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of<\/em>.\u00a0 And I am grateful that I\u2019m not the only one who had this fixation<\/a> on punishment, especially as I find it more difficult to see any rational equivalence between do not punish me<\/em> and cleanse<\/em>\u2026me<\/em>, clear me<\/em> or purge me <\/em>of any sin, whether hidden from me or not.\u00a0 I struggled<\/a> to understand this all through the David\u2019s Forgiveness<\/a><\/em> essays.\u00a0 Maybe I have a better way to express it now.<\/p>\n

Peter didn\u2019t fully embrace Jesus\u2019 saying: You people are from your father<\/a> the devil, and you want to do what your father desires<\/em>.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He believed almost nothing of what Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised<\/em>.9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He certainly didn\u2019t believe he would deny knowing Jesus three times.\u00a0 So, as Jesus was about to be arrested (John 18:10, 11 NET):<\/p>\n

Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest\u2019s slave, cutting off his right ear<\/a>. \u00a0(Now the slave\u2019s name was Malchus.) [Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0But Jesus said to Peter, \u201cPut your10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>sword back into its sheath! \u00a0Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Maybe Jesus\u2019 rebuke came with an exclamation point.\u00a0 Maybe it didn\u2019t.\u00a0 Regardless, it shattered Peter\u2019s worldview and his self-esteem at the very moment he believed he was serving the Lord<\/em> [his] God with all<\/em> [his] heart<\/a>, with all<\/em> [his] soul<\/a>, and with all<\/em> [his] mind<\/em>,11<\/sup><\/a> selflessly, even heroically.\u00a0 It was devastating.\u00a0 But was it punishment?<\/p>\n

After he denied knowing Jesus three times, Peter remembered what Jesus had said<\/a>: \u201cBefore the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.\u201d\u00a0 And he went outside and wept bitterly<\/em>.12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Again, it was devastating, but was it punishment?<\/p>\n

After his resurrection Jesus prepared breakfast for his disciples by the sea (John 21:15-19 NET):<\/p>\n
