Part 69"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Contribute to the needs of the saints, pursue hospitality<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019ll forego the table of Scripture this time.\u00a0 I\u2019m convinced now that I\u2019m not forcing the situation.\u00a0 Paul was describing love empowered by the fruit of the Holy Spirit, not offering obedience to his own rules as the true path to living eternal life.\u00a0 And there was always something arbitrary about what I was trying to do.\u00a0 <em>Kindness<\/em> is the most obvious aspect of the fruit of the Spirit to effect contributing, but since I have used it <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/18\/romans-part-52\/ #_kindness\">already<\/a> I would\u2019ve said <em>faithfulness<\/em>.\u00a0 And as I consider <em>the needs of the saints<\/em> I tend to focus on <em>Love is patient<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fruit of the Spirit<\/a> isn\u2019t really divisible into love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control any more than love is divisible into the constituent parts of Paul\u2019s definition in <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Corinthians<\/a>.\u00a0 I can\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/04\/18\/romans-part-52\/#_backwards\">spoof<\/a> the fruit of the Spirit by striving to be loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled, though I\u2019m not sure I would have understood that if I hadn\u2019t tried to do it on my own.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek word translated <em>contribute<\/em> above is \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 It means <em>to share<\/em>, or <em>to have in common<\/em>: <em>All who believed were together and held everything in common<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f70, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>The group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but everything was held in common<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f71, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood<\/em>, the author of Hebrews wrote, [Jesus] <em>likewise shared in their humanity<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And this brings up another aspect of the concept <em>common<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek word translated <em>share<\/em> above is \u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b7\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, another form of <a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/kekoino_ne_ken_2841.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>, or a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>. \u00a0In the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Hebrews+2:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NET online<\/a> if I click on the English word <em>share<\/em> I am taken to \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9, if I click on \u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b7\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd in the parallel Greek I am taken to \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9.\u00a0 Perhaps this is just a mistake.\u00a0 It happens sometimes.\u00a0 In <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Revelation+20:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revelation 20:10<\/a> for instance if I click on <em>lake<\/em> I am taken to \u03bb\u03af\u03bc\u03bd\u03b7 (\u2018lake\u2019), if I click on the parallel Greek \u03bb\u1f77\u03bc\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd I am taken to \u03bb\u03b9\u03bc\u03ae\u03bd (\u2018harbor\u2019 or \u2018haven\u2019).\u00a0 But I\u2019ll pursue this as if it is a possible understanding of the Greek rather than a coding mistake because all of these words share \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2 as their common root.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jews from the province of Asia<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> accused Paul: <em>he also brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9) <em>this holy place<\/em>!<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 If this is a potential meaning of \u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b7\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd it accentuates how He who became Jesus profaned, defiled or made Himself common as He <em>shared<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f73\u03c3\u03c7\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ad\u03c7\u03c9\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ad\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) in our <em>humanity<\/em>.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t difficult to grasp; a <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Common_Women_Prostitution_and_Sexuality.html?id=9S_rO2TXRq4C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>common<\/em> woman<\/a> was one <em>shared<\/em> by many.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_known\"><\/a>I want to take a moment to discuss who He-who-became-Jesus is.\u00a0 To most of my contemporaries He is the unknown Son of God who declared the known Jehovah as his Father.\u00a0 I think of Him as the known <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\"><em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em><\/a> (\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) who became flesh and blood as <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2\">\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2<\/a> and revealed his as yet <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+1:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unknown<\/a> Father.\u00a0 Admittedly, I would arrive at a stalemate on this issue from Scripture.\u00a0 I lean the way I do because of personal experience.\u00a0 That Jehovah killed someone or sent someone to die, even his own son, isn\u2019t really news, certainly not good news.<\/p>\n<p>If <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>became a man \u00a0\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2 and <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+10:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gave<\/a> his own human life to satisfy his own righteous vengeance against human sin, if He <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+1:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">created<\/a> human beings knowing full well He would ultimately pay this price for them, that is news, very good news. \u00a0And it helps to explain the great pains He took,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Revelation+20:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">continues<\/a> to take, to demonstrate the failure of any other means of redemption.\u00a0 And with this understanding I can appreciate how <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> bowed to the higher authority of his Father\u2019s will, authority which supersedes all law or covenant, as He <em>relented over the evil that he had said he would do to his people<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> at Sinai.<\/p>\n<p>So what makes a person common, defiled or profane?\u00a0 <em>What defiles<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fd6, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9) <em>a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fd6, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9) <em>a person<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The <em>things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fd6, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9) <em>a person<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus wasn\u2019t talking about disease here.\u00a0 <em>For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This knowledge wasn\u2019t from <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>omniscience but from \u00a0\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2\u2019 personal experience. \u00a0\u00a0\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2 <em>knew <\/em>(\u1f10\u03b3\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9\">\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) <em>what was in man<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u1ff3, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>God made the one who did not know<\/em> (\u03b3\u03bd\u1f79\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9) <em>sin to be sin for us, so that in him we would become the righteousness of God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The things that defile a person are already inside a person.\u00a0 <em>These are the things that defile<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9, or \u2018make common\u2019) <em>a person <\/em>(\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd, another form of \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2)<em>; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fd6, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9) <em>a person <\/em>(\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd, another form of \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So are we all common, defiled, profane?\u00a0 <em>Certainly not, Lord<\/em>, Peter protested to the voice which commanded him to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Acts+10:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slaughter and eat<\/a><\/em> in a trance as he prayed, <em>for I have never eaten anything defiled <\/em>(\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#sdfootnote17sym\">and<\/a> ritually unclean!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In his trance Peter didn\u2019t believe Jesus\u2019 teaching, <em>There is nothing outside of a person that can defile<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9) <em>him by going into him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The voice didn\u2019t chide his unbelief but said simply, <em>What God has made clean, you must not consider ritually unclean<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u1f77\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9)!<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0We take this to mean that <em>all foods are clean<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Peter said, <em>God has shown <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/peter-and-cornelius\/#sdfootnote30sym\">me<\/a> that I should call no person defiled<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2) <em>or ritually unclean<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_origin\"><\/a><em>Macedonia and Achaia are pleased to make some contribution<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <em>for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote the believers in Rome.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s important to consider the origin of <em>the poor among the saints in Jerusalem<\/em>:\u00a0 <em>All who believed were together and held everything in common, and they began selling their property and possessions and distributing the proceeds to everyone, as anyone had need<\/em> (\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\">\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 At first this economic system worked amazingly well (Acts 4:32-35 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but everything was held in common. \u00a0With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on them all. \u00a0For there was no one needy <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f10\u03bd\u03b4\u03b5\u03ae\u03c2\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03b4\u03b5\u1f75\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> among them, because those who were owners of land or houses were selling them and bringing the proceeds from the sales and placing them at the apostles\u2019 feet.\u00a0 The proceeds were distributed to each, as anyone had need <em>(\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1).\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They sold <em>land<\/em> and <em>houses<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#_communal\">assets<\/a> that could be leased or rented, believing, <em>This same Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will come back in the same way you saw him go into heaven<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a> soon, in their lifetimes.\u00a0 I\u2019m not suggesting they acted contrarily to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, but that prompting may have been unique to their time and circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Jerusalem was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyewitnesstohistory.com\/jewishtemple.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">destroyed<\/a> in the lifetimes of many of them, and whatever lands and houses remained went to their Roman conquerors.\u00a0 Israel had a penchant for arbitrary law (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Judges+21:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Judges 21:5<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Ezra+10:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ezra 10:8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Acts+9:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acts 9:1, 2 NET<\/a>).\u00a0 Converting lands and houses to cash may have been the only way for believers in Jerusalem to \u201ckeep\u201d them.\u00a0 [Y]<em>ou accepted the confiscation of your belongings with joy, because you knew that you certainly had a better and lasting possession<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a> the writer of Hebrews acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>The deaths of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Acts+5:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ananias<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Acts+5:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sapphira<\/a>, probably by design, kept the Jerusalem church from becoming a popular, bandwagon-style movement (Acts 5:11-13 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Great fear gripped the whole church and all who heard about these things.\u00a0 Now many miraculous signs and wonders came about among the people through the hands of the apostles. \u00a0By common consent they were all meeting together in Solomon\u2019s Portico. \u00a0None of the rest dared to join them, but the people held them in high honor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>More and more believers in the Lord<\/em> [who] <em>were added to their number, crowds of both men and women<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a> were <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/John+12:31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drawn<\/a> by Jesus, I trust, rather than the glitz and glam of the moment.\u00a0 But it didn\u2019t keep pace apparently with the conversion and spending of assets: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote12sym\">If<\/a> a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacks daily food<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a> was James\u2019 concern in the Jerusalem church.\u00a0 At the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Acts+15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerusalem Council<\/a> <em>when James, Cephas, and John, who had a reputation as pillars, recognized the grace that had been given to me, <\/em>Paul wrote the Galatians, <em>they gave to Barnabas and me the right hand of fellowship, agreeing that we would go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. \u00a0They requested only that we remember the poor, the very thing I also was eager to do<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>For <\/em>[<em>Macedonia and Achaia<\/em>] <em>were pleased to<\/em> [<em>make some <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Romans+15:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contribution<\/a> for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem<\/em>], <em>and indeed they are indebted<\/em> (\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u1f73\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03ad\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2\">\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03ad\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>) <em>to the Jerusalem saints.<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a><em>\u00a0 For if the Gentiles have shared<\/em> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) <em>in their spiritual things<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>), <em>they are obligated <\/em>(\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u1f77\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03af\u03bb\u03c9\">\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03af\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <em>also to minister<\/em> href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>to them in material things<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9\">).<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn29\"><sup>[29]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_debt\"><\/a>This debt and obligation stem directly from, <em>To <\/em>[<em>Israel<\/em>] <em>belong the adoption as sons, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises. \u00a0To them belong the patriarchs, and from them, by human descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever!\u00a0 Amen<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Still, Paul called this debt and obligation \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd (fruit): <em>Therefore after I have completed this and have safely delivered this bounty<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <em>to them<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And so I take it for granted that he intended this debt and obligation to be dispatched by love empowered by the fruit of the Spirit much as I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/10\/11\/romans-part-47\/\">elsewhere<\/a> on the spiritual gift of contributing<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn32\"><sup>[32]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_normative\"><\/a>I\u2019ll write more on that in subsequent essays.\u00a0 Here, I want to address two different but related issues: 1) I don\u2019t think the communal economy of the Jerusalem church is normative, and 2) I think the debt and obligation to <em>the poor among the saints in Jerusalem<\/em> was as temporary as that unique situation.\u00a0 I consider Paul\u2019s own example (Acts 20:33-35 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI have desired <em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03b8\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> no one\u2019s silver or gold or clothing. \u00a0You yourselves know that these hands of mine provided for my needs <em>(\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03b9\u03c2, a form of \u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> and the needs of those who were with me. \u00a0By all these things, I have shown you that by working in this way we must help <em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u1f71\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> the weak, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus that he himself said, \u2018It is more blessed to give than to receive <em>(\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u1f71\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9\">\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And I consider Paul\u2019s teaching (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12; Ephesians 4:28 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now on the topic of brotherly love you have no need <em>(\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1)<\/em> for anyone to write you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another. \u00a0And indeed you are practicing it toward all the brothers and sisters in all of Macedonia.\u00a0 But we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, to aspire to lead a quiet life, to attend to your own business, and to work with your hands, as we commanded you. \u00a0In this way you will live a decent life before outsiders and not be in need <em>(\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The one who steals must steal no longer; rather he must labor, doing good <em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f79\u03bd, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> with his own hands, so that he may have something to share <em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u1f79\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> with the one who has need <em>(\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And I consider Paul\u2019s understanding of the <em>one new man<\/em> (Ephesians 2:11-22 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh \u2013 who are called \u201cuncircumcision\u201d by the so-called \u201ccircumcision\u201d that is performed on the body by human hands \u2013 that you were at that time without the Messiah, alienated from the citizenship of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. \u00a0But now in Christ Jesus you who used to be far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. \u00a0For he is our peace, the one who made both groups into one and who destroyed the middle wall of partition, the hostility, when he nullified in his flesh the law of commandments in decrees.\u00a0 He did this to create in himself one new man out of two, thus making peace, and to reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by which the hostility has been killed. \u00a0And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, so that through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. \u00a0So then you are no longer foreigners and noncitizens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of God\u2019s household, because you have been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. \u00a0In him the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And so I find it extremely difficult to believe that the Holy Spirit intended to re-divide this <em>one new man<\/em> into a permanent working-class of Gentiles supporting a permanent leisure-class of descendants of Israel because Paul wrote the saints of Macedonia and Achaia that <em>they are indebted to the Jerusalem saints.\u00a0 For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are obligated also to minister to them in material things<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/01\/30\/romans-part-69\/#_ftn33\"><sup>[33]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I believe that debt and obligation were superseded, once the Jerusalem church was scattered (along with its unique economy), by: <em>Owe <\/em>(\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u1f77\u03bb\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03af\u03bb\u03c9) <em>no one anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law<\/em>.<a
