Wealth, Part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remember <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/29\/solomons-wealth-part-1\/\">Solomon\u2019s Wealth<\/a><\/em>?\u00a0 In and of itself I said so what? what does it mean? \u00a0Now that wealth, which is at least possible to measure, has been coupled in a promise with <em>a wise and discerning mind<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> which is difficult to measure.\u00a0 Solomon\u2019s wealth is hard to deny (whether I argue with the superlative degree of it or not).\u00a0 I am reminded of a story about Jesus (Matthew 9:2-8 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026some people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. \u00a0When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, \u201cHave courage, son! \u00a0Your<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>sins are <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/forgiveness\/\">forgiven<\/a>.\u201d<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0Then some of the experts in the law said<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>to themselves, \u201cThis man is blaspheming!\u201d \u00a0When Jesus saw their reaction he said, \u201cWhy do you<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>respond with evil in your hearts? \u00a0Which is easier, to say, \u2018Your<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>sins are forgiven\u2019<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>or to say, \u2018Stand up<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and walk\u2019? \u00a0But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exo.html#exousian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exo.html#exousia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em>on earth to forgive sins\u201d \u2013 then he said to the paralytic \u2013 \u201cStand up, take your stretcher, and go home.\u201d \u00a0And he stood up and went home. \u00a0When the crowd saw this, they were afraid<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and honored God who had given such authority <em>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03bd, a form of\u00a0\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> to men.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_authority\"><\/a>The Greek word \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03bd\u00a0(a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1) makes it fairly clear that the crowd honored God for the <em>authority to forgive sins <\/em>that was given to men.\u00a0 The authority to say, <em>Stand up and walk<\/em>, was merely the kicker, so to speak, to persuade the crowd that the authority to forgive sins was truly given to men.<\/p>\n<p>Is it possible that <em>a wise and discerning mind<\/em> given by God, would not be wise or discerning enough to prevent Solomon\u2019s disobedience to God\u2019s laws?\u00a0 That\u2019s what the Bible seems to be saying here.\u00a0 And Solomon\u2019s wealth is sort of the kicker to make that point.\u00a0 At the moment, however, a more pressing issue gnaws at my certainty and peace of mind; namely, is it possible that one thing\u2014Solomon\u2019s wealth\u2014can be both at one and the same time the fulfillment of God\u2019s promise and Solomon\u2019s direct disobedience to God\u2019s laws for kings?<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_unbelief\"><\/a>There is an easy and obvious negative answer to this question, obvious if you have read the writings of <a href=\"http:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/nietzsche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Friedrich Nietzsche<\/a>.\u00a0 A Nietzschean reading of Solomon\u2019s wealth would go something like this: The laundry list (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Kings+10:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Kings 10:14-28<\/a>) could stand pretty much as is.\u00a0 The people of Israel were proud of their richest, wisest king, like any prosperous people would be.\u00a0 The next chapter was just more bragging originally (verses <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Kings+11:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Kings+11:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Kings+11:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">8<\/a>).\u00a0 Solomon conquered the hearts of many hot foreign women and built places for them to worship their gods.\u00a0 The other stuff was added in the time of Josiah (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/2+Kings+22:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Kings 22:1-2<\/a>), a much later eight-year-old king of Judah.<\/p>\n<p>The priests of Judah had eighteen long years (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/2+Kings+22:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Kings 22:3<\/a>,<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/2+Kings+22:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/2+Kings+22:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/2+Kings+22:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">12, 13<\/a>) to falsify the whole history of Israel and present the newly discovered scroll to the twenty-five-year-old king raised under their tutelage.\u00a0 Even as it stands, however, the <em>discerning<\/em> reader can see through the Scripture to the historical <em>truth<\/em> hidden inside.\u00a0 Solomon worshiped Yahweh just as he paid every other god his due, much like the people of Josiah\u2019s day (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/2+Kings+23:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Kings 23:4<\/a>).\u00a0 But the priests of Yahweh wanted more than their due.\u00a0 They knew that the kingdom was divided in the days of Rehoboam, Solomon\u2019s son.\u00a0 The simple truth that Solomon\u2019s conscription and taxation were onerous on the people and that Rehoboam threatened to be worse than his father was not the cause of the people\u2019s rebellion.\u00a0 No, it was because Solomon had sinned against Yahweh, broken every commandment they cleverly placed in the writings of Moses to get some control over this new <em>na\u00efve<\/em> and <em>gullible<\/em> King Josiah (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Kings+11:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Kings 11:11-13<\/a>).\u00a0 Though it was well known that no evil worthy of Yahweh\u2019s wrath came upon Solomon or Israel during Solomon\u2019s reign, the priests had an answer for this as well.\u00a0 The evil would come on Rehoboam because Yahweh longed to show mercy to Solomon\u2019s father David, the poet king of Yahweh, and man after Yahweh\u2019s own heart.\u00a0 On the other hand Solomon was too well known for his wisdom and wealth to discard that fact (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Kings+3:28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Kings 3:28<\/a>).\u00a0 So, Solomon\u2019s wisdom was not an accident of birth, nor the result of privilege and education.\u00a0 No, it was Yahweh\u2019s answer to an overwhelmed young man\u2019s request for aid in fulfilling his role as king (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/1+Kings+3:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Kings 3:11-12<\/a>).\u00a0 Yahweh just threw in the wealth for good measure, since every priest hopes the path of wisdom leads to riches.\u00a0 (Never mind that they made Solomon\u2019s wealth an act of disobedience to Yahweh\u2019s laws.\u00a0 Maybe that\u2019s evidence of a theological rift in the priestly caste. \u00a0Yeah, that\u2019s what happened.)<\/p>\n<p>On and on this entirely fanciful reading of the Bible goes.\u00a0 The key is that every word or act, promise or prophecy of God is a lie concocted by priests, because the <em>truth<\/em> is, there is no God.\u00a0 Later, after the Babylonian exile, the prophets must have pulled the same nasty trick on the priests that the priests pulled on the kings of Israel.\u00a0 I\u2019m not really sure who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/01\/aultery-in-the-prophets-part-2\/\">lambasted the prophets<\/a>, or when.\u00a0 All this to maintain a faith that should have long ago been abandoned in a <em>failed<\/em> god named Yahweh.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying I subscribe to a theory of Bible interpretation that posits that the Scripture was rewritten at least twice by fanatical people hell-bent on making Yahweh look better than he ought to for their own selfish gain.\u00a0 I brought it up precisely because I have reasons of my own to believe differently, and I\u2019m ready to plunge headlong into the very thickets this kind of analysis purports to untangle.\u00a0 I intend to forge ahead with the confidence that God has reasons of his own for the apparent tangle and complexity of these thickets, and He does not require lying priests and prophets to account for them.<\/p>\n<p>So, I\u2019ll expand the context again.\u00a0 When the elders of Israel first asked for a king, God took it personally (1 Samuel 8:7, 8a NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Lord said to Samuel, \u201cDo everything the people request of you. \u00a0For it is not you that they have rejected, but it is me that they have rejected as their king <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/03\/07\/hannahs-prayer-part-6\/#_Table31\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Just as they have done from the day that I brought them up from Egypt until this very day, they have rejected me and have served other gods <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/03\/07\/hannahs-prayer-part-6\/#_Table33\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum<\/strong>:
