Too bad for the wicked<\/em> (r\u00e2sh\u00e2\u02bd<\/a><\/em>, \u05dc\u05e8\u05e9\u05e2) sinners <\/em>(ra\u02bd<\/a><\/em>, \u05e8\u05e2)!\u00a0 For they will get exactly what they deserve<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As I begin to discover just who<\/a> the wicked<\/em> are one might argue that wicked sinners<\/em> are worse than the wicked<\/em>.\u00a0 I won\u2019t dispute that.<\/p>\n

In the Septuagint<\/a> r\u00e2sh\u00e2\u02bd<\/em> wasn\u2019t translated \u1f00\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u1fc6 (a form of \u1f00\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>) here but \u1f00\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3<\/a> (a form of \u1f04\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>); r\u00e2sh\u00e2\u02bd ra\u02bd<\/em> was \u1f00\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3 \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u1f70 (a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>).\u00a0 I\u2019m starting here all the same because this verse is part of a couplet at the end of a description of what the wicked sinners<\/em> were about to get<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll consider (Isaiah 3:1-3) from the NET, a contemporary translation of contemporary Hebrew by believers in Jesus, the NETS<\/a>, a contemporary translation of the Septuagint, and the Tanakh<\/a>, a contemporary translation of contemporary Hebrew by those who reject Jesus as Messiah (and may or may not accept Him as a prophet).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Look, the sovereign (\u02bc\u00e2d\u00f4n<\/a><\/em>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05d5\u05df) Lord (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, <\/em>\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) who commands armies is about to remove from Jerusalem and Judah every source of security, including all the food and water,<\/td>\nBehold now the Sovereign, the Lord Sabaoth will take away from Judea and from Ierousalem a strong man and a strong woman, strength of bread and strength of water,<\/td>\nFor, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

In verse 2 the Hebrew word translated omen readers<\/em> in the NET and prudent<\/em> in the Tanakh was q\u00e2sam<\/a><\/em> (\u05d5\u05e7\u05e1\u05dd).\u00a0 The Greek \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c7\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f74\u03bd, translated diviner<\/em>, is undefined in any source I found, but sounds similar to our word stochastic<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 The root \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c7\u03bf\u03c3 translates objective<\/em> in a contemporary Greek news magazine<\/a> online.\u00a0 Perhaps that lends some credence to translating the guesswork of the omen reader or diviner prudent<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In verse 3 the Hebrew word translated magical arts<\/em> and artificer <\/em>is ch\u0103r\u00e2sh\u0131\u0302ym<\/a><\/em> (\u05d7\u05e8\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd).\u00a0 A note (7<\/a>) in the NET reads: \u201c\u2019and the wise with respect to magic.\u2019\u00a0 On the meaning of \u05d7\u05b2\u05e8\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd (kharashim, \u2018magic\u2019), see HALOT<\/em> 358 s.v. III \u05d7\u05e8\u05e9\u05c1.\u00a0 Some understand here a homonym, meaning \u2018craftsmen.\u2019\u00a0 In this case, one could translate, \u2018skilled craftsmen\u2019 (cf. NIV, NASB).\u201d\u00a0 The Septuagint\u2019s<\/a> \u1f00\u03c1\u03c7\u03b9\u03c4\u1f73\u03ba\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd\u03b1 translates architect<\/a><\/em> in contemporary Greek.<\/p>\n

The Hebrew word translated incantations<\/em> and orator <\/em>is lachash<\/a><\/em> (\u05dc\u05d7\u05e9).\u00a0 The Greek word translated listener<\/em> is \u1f00\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b1\u03c4\u1f75\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b1\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>) in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 The rabbis it seems were more sensitive to the character of the people carried off into Babylonian captivity or to them who were called the stay and the staff<\/em> of Jerusalem and Judah.\u00a0 Many of us would prefer to think that the stay and the staff<\/em> of our security <\/em>were comprised of people of better character than our pundits portray their enemies.<\/p>\n

Why was ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h about to remove from Jerusalem and Judah every source of security<\/em>?\u00a0 I turn to Isaiah\u2019s indictment (Isaiah 2:6-9):<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Indeed, O Lord, you have abandoned your people, the descendants of Jacob.\u00a0 For diviners from the east are everywhere; they consult omen readers like the Philistines do.\u00a0 Plenty of foreigners are around.<\/td>\nFor he has abandoned his people, the house of Israel, because their country, like that of the allophyles, was filled with divinations as it had been at the beginning, and many allophyle children were born to them.<\/td>\nTherefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

A note (17<\/a>) in the NET acknowledges that the translators added the word diviners<\/em> in verse 6.\u00a0 The Hebrew word translated omen readers<\/em> and soothsayers <\/em>is \u02bd\u00e2nan<\/a><\/em> (\u05d5\u05e2\u05e0\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd).\u00a0 The Greek word \u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03b4\u03bf\u03bd\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> translated divinations <\/em>is quite similar in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 The final clause in verse 6 (final sentence in the NET) was yeled<\/a><\/em> (\u05d5\u05d1\u05d9\u05dc\u05d3\u05d9) nokr\u0131\u0302y<\/a><\/em> (\u05e0\u05db\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd) \u015b\u00e2phaq<\/a><\/em> (\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1\u05e4\u05d9\u05e7\u05d5) in Hebrew, translated three different ways above.\u00a0 The Greek words \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03c6\u1f7b\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> and \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1f79\u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03b1<\/a> (both forms of \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03cc\u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) in the Septuagint<\/a> mean \u201cof another tribe, foreign.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why they weren\u2019t translated in the NETS.<\/p>\n

The wicked sinners<\/em> consulted omen readers, foreigners who did not know ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, or, perhaps, made their own children like foreigners ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> did not know.\u00a0 They had great wealth and had made provision for war.\u00a0 They worshiped the work of their own hands.\u00a0 It sounds all too familiar.\u00a0 The chapter concludes\u00a0 (Isaiah 2:22):

Stop trusting in human beings, whose life\u2019s breath (ne<\/sup>sh\u00e2m\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, \u05e0\u05e9\u05de\u05d4) is in their nostrils.\u00a0 For why should they be given special consideration?<\/td>\n[No verse 22 in the Septuagint.\u00a0 Was it omitted or added later?]<\/td>\nCease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

This, in a nutshell, is the imperative wicked sinners<\/em> refuse to believe (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) or obey (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 The religious mind trusts religious<\/a> authorities, human<\/a> authorities.\u00a0 What they are about to get<\/em> from ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>continued (Isaiah 3:4-7):<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The people will treat each other harshly; men will oppose each other; neighbors will fight.\u00a0 Youths will proudly defy the elderly and riffraff will challenge those who were once respected.<\/td>\nAnd the people will fall together, man against man, and a man against his neighbor; the child will stumble against the elder, the dishonored against the honorable.<\/td>\nAnd the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Hebrew word translated malicious young men<\/em> or babes <\/em>is ta\u02bd\u0103l\u00fbl<\/a><\/em> (\u05d5\u05ea\u05e2\u05dc\u05d5\u05dc\u05d9\u05dd) in verse 4.\u00a0 The Greek word translated mockers in the Septuagint<\/a> is \u1f10\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u1fd6\u03ba\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u1f10\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u03af\u03ba\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>).\u00a0 Above all, understand this: In the last days blatant scoffers<\/em> (\u1f10\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u1fd6\u03ba\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u1f10\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u03af\u03ba\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2) will come, being propelled by their own evil urges<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)\u2026[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And, In the end time there will come scoffers <\/em>(\u1f10\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u1fd6\u03ba\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u1f10\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u03af\u03ba\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2), propelled by their own ungodly<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) desires<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1).[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Isaiah continued to clarify why wicked sinners<\/em> were about to get exactly what they deserve<\/em> (Isaiah 3:8-11):<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Jerusalem certainly stumbles, Judah falls, for their words and their actions offend the Lord (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4); they rebel against his royal authority.<\/td>\nbecause Ierousalem has been abandoned and Judea has fallen and their tongues are joined with lawlessness, being disobedient toward the things of the Lord; now therefore their glory has been brought low.<\/td>\nFor Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
The look on their faces testifies to their guilt; like the people of Sodom they openly boast of their sin.\u00a0 Too bad for them!\u00a0 For they bring disaster on themselves.<\/td>\nAnd the shame of their face has risen up against them; they have proclaimed their sin like that of Sodoma, and they have made it plain.\u00a0 Woe to their soul!\u00a0 Because they have given evil counsel against themselves,<\/td>\nThe shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Too bad for the wicked sinners!\u00a0 For they will get exactly what they deserve.<\/td>\nWoe to the lawless one! Evil things will happen to him according to the works of his hands.<\/td>\nWoe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

In verse 8 the Hebrew word translated certainly<\/em> and for<\/em> is k\u0131\u0302y<\/a><\/em> (\u05db\u05d9), stumbles<\/em> and ruined <\/em>is k\u00e2shal<\/a><\/em> (\u05db\u05e9\u05dc\u05d4).\u00a0 In the Septuagint<\/a> in Greek the word translated because <\/em>is \u1f45\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> and has been abandoned<\/em> is \u1f00\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, which is harder to pin down.\u00a0 It comes up as a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> (send up) and \u1f00\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> (definition unavailable).\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it means \u201csend up,\u201d and guessed that it might be a word negated by \u1f00, so I tried \u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>.\u00a0 Here \u03bd\u03ad\u03c93 is most promising, so \u1f00\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9 might be the negation of \u201cheap, pile up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The final two clauses (three in the NETS) of verse 8 are intriguing and frustrating.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know Hebrew but I don\u2019t see two clauses.\u00a0 The word offend<\/em> (NET) is definitely not in the text; against <\/em>(Tanakh) may be a way to translate \u02bcel<\/a><\/em> (\u05d0\u05dc).\u00a0 It looks to me as if it says, \u201cbecause their words (tongue) and their actions toward ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>\u201d whatever follows next.\u00a0 Three words, m\u00e2r\u00e2h<\/a><\/em> (\u05dc\u05de\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea) \u02bdayin<\/a><\/em> (\u05e2\u05e0\u05d9) k\u00e2b\u00f4d<\/a><\/em> (\u05db\u05d1\u05d5\u05d3\u05d5), \u201crebellious eyes glory,\u201d follow next in the Hebrew text.\u00a0 I understand why the rabbis wanted to insert lawless <\/em>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) into the mix in the Septuagint<\/a>. \u00a0But this isn\u2019t Jesse James<\/a> or the Wild West.\u00a0 It\u2019s a relatively stable, prosperous and religious nation that ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> is about to turn on its head.\u00a0 They had laws but not ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> laws.<\/p>\n

The Septuagint in verse 10 doesn\u2019t have what I called the couplet <\/em>near the beginning of this essay.\u00a0 Rather the indictment of the \u1f00\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3 \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u1f70<\/a>\u00a0(lawless one<\/em>, NETS) continued.\u00a0 The NET and Tanakh do share the couplet<\/em> (Isaiah 3:10, 11):<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Though both the innocent<\/em>, if there were any, and the wicked sinners<\/em> live under the same consequences\u2014the sovereign Lord who commands armies is about to remove from Jerusalem and Judah every source of security<\/em>\u2014the innocent <\/em>will be protected in the midst of it, for they will be rewarded for what they have done<\/em>, or, they shall eat the fruit of their doings.<\/p>\n

This makes perfect sense if we allow that the wicked sinners<\/em> trusted in human beings, whose life\u2019s breath is in their nostrils<\/em>.[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They worship <\/em>[and rely on] the product of their own hands, what their own fingers have fashioned<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They are helpless when these things\u2014the stay and the staff<\/em>\u2014are removed.\u00a0 The innocent by contrast trust yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> and continue to trust Him through major social upheaval (1 Corinthians 1:4-9 NET).<\/p>\n
