{"id":654,"date":"2012-07-06T21:20:20","date_gmt":"2012-07-06T15:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=654"},"modified":"2025-02-08T19:48:11","modified_gmt":"2025-02-09T01:48:11","slug":"jedidiah-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=654","title":{"rendered":"Jedidiah, Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Apparently God sent Nathan to forgive David while David still believed he had gotten away with his <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/26\/jedidiah-part-1\/\">cover up<\/a>.\u00a0 God was certainly overreaching the limits of our <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/\">contract<\/a>.\u00a0 More to the point, probably, He was shattering and prying away the pieces of the hard shell my contract had become, a shell that was preventing me from knowing Him.\u00a0 After I saw God\u2019s overreaching with David, I saw it with Jesus and Peter, too (Luke 22:31-34 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote19sym\">Simon<\/a>, Simon, pay attention! \u00a0Satan has demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote20sym\">fail<\/a>.\u00a0 When you have turned back, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote21sym\">strengthen<\/a> your brothers <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#_Table9\">[Table]<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 But Peter said to him, \u201cLord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!\u201d \u00a0And Jesus replied, \u201cI tell you, Peter, the rooster will <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote22sym\">not<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote23sym\">crow<\/a> today <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote24sym\">until<\/a> you have denied three times that you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote25sym\">know<\/a> me\u201d <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#_Table10\">[Table]<\/a><\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Was I going completely nuts? \u00a0Or had Jesus covered for Peter by transmuting foreknowledge of Peter\u2019s three strike denial into a prophetic utterance as sure and certain as any prophecy in Scripture?<\/p>\n<p><em>Cleanse me of my sin!<\/em> David\u2019s song continued.\u00a0 <em>For I am aware of my rebellious acts; I am forever conscious of my sin.\u00a0 Against you \u2013 you above all \u2013 I have sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight.\u00a0 So you are just when you confront me; you are right when you condemn me<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joshua said to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/26\/jedidiah-part-1\/\">Achan<\/a>, <em>My son, honor the Lord God of Israel and give him praise! This difference does not significantly effect the meaning of the passage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_faith\"><\/a>Though I haven\u2019t read everything on his site yet, I get the impression that Mr. Braun is a peacemaker.\u00a0 He sees the differences between the Hebrew and Greek texts as mostly insubstantial.\u00a0 I am not so holy.\u00a0 I see that at a specific point in time before Jesus was born the Hebrew was translated into Greek a certain way.\u00a0 Then after Jesus was rejected as Messiah that translation can no longer be teased out of the Hebrew.\u00a0 Am I being anti-Semitic or blaming the Jews?\u00a0 On the contrary, I admire their faith.\u00a0 I\u2019ve practically admitted that I would <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/29\/solomons-wealth-part-2\/\">do the same thing<\/a>.\u00a0 But this is how faith works.<\/p>\n<p>One\u2019s faith obviously effects one\u2019s scholarship.\u00a0 It chooses what one sees, why one pursues it, and how one interprets it.\u00a0 The point isn\u2019t will my faith make a fool of me.\u00a0 Of course it will.\u00a0 Eventually faith in anything or anyone will either make me foolish, or make me appear foolish to others.\u00a0 That really isn\u2019t the question.\u00a0 The question is, Is Jesus worthy of my faith whether I am, or appear to be, foolish or not?\u00a0 The keepers of the Hebrew language of the Old Testament have bet the farm on their faith that Jesus is not their Messiah.\u00a0 I am betting that Jesus is Yahweh become human flesh.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_philosophical\"><\/a>To get back to David\u2019s song, I\u2019ve already mentioned what sense might be made of, <em>So you are just when you confront me; you are right when you condemn me<\/em>, as translated from Hebrew currently.\u00a0 What possible sense could <em>so that you will be justified in your words and will prevail when you are judged <\/em>have made two centuries before Jesus was born?\u00a0 Who judges God?\u00a0 Well, every one of us judges God, every moment of everyday.\u00a0 Granted, those of us with a philosophical bent of mind do it consciously more often than others.<\/p>\n<p>Consider how cruelly <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/07\/jephthahs-religious-mind\/\">Jephthah<\/a> judged God when he sacrificed his daughter to keep a reckless vow.\u00a0 How harshly might he judge God for forgiving David for adultery and murder if David did not confess, <em>Against you \u2013 you above all \u2013 I have sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight<\/em>, the very thing Jephthah refused to acknowledge about his oath?<\/p>\n<p>Consider how foolishly the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/28\/ezra-and-divorce\/\">men of Ezra\u2019s day<\/a> judged the God who hates divorce, when they divorced their foreign wives and sent their children away to earn his favor.\u00a0 How harshly might they judge God for forgiving David for adultery and murder if David did not pray, <em>Wash away my wrongdoing!\u00a0 <\/em><em>Cleanse me of my sin! <\/em>\u00a0<em>For I am aware of my rebellious acts; I am forever conscious of my sin, <\/em>the very thing the men of Ezra\u2019s day did not do as they tried to establish their own righteousness <em>according to the law<\/em>?<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>For ignoring the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking instead to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to God\u2019s righteousness<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><em>\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Look, I was guilty of sin from birth<\/em>, David\u2019s song continued, <em>a sinner the moment my mother conceived me<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 David was not acknowledging that his mother was a uniquely sinful woman who gave birth to especially sin-filled children, but that all parents are sinners who give birth to sinful children like themselves.\u00a0 <a id=\"_propitiation\"><\/a>[F]<em>or all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God<\/em>, Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans. \u00a0<em>But they are justified <\/em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, another form of\u00a0\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9) <em>freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. \u00a0God publicly displayed him at his death as the mercy seat <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/il.html#ilasthrion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f31\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+3%3A25&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accessible through faith<\/a><\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mercy seat was the top of the ark of the covenant in the holy of holies in the temple in Jerusalem.\u00a0 <em>In this ark<\/em>, the writer of the letter to the Hebrews explained, <em>were the golden urn containing the manna, Aaron\u2019s rod that budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. \u00a0And above the ark were the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/11\/romans-part-16\/#sdfootnote8sym\">cherubim<\/a> of glory overshadowing the mercy seat<\/em> (\u1f31\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/11\/romans-part-16\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The high priest entered into the most holy place once a year <em>not without blood that he offer<\/em>[ed]<em> for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance<\/em>. \u00a0<em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Holy Spirit<\/a> is making clear that the way into the holy place had not yet appeared as long as the old tabernacle was standing<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote10sym\" and more perfect tent not made with hands, that is, not of this creation, and he entered once for all into the most holy place not by the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood, and so he himself secured eternal redemption<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> the writer of Hebrews concluded.<\/p>\n<p><em>This was to demonstrate his righteousness <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>), Paul continued in his letter to the Romans, <em>because God in his forbearance had passed over the sins previously committed. \u00a0This was also to demonstrate<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> <em>his righteousness <\/em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2, a form of\u00a0\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7) <em>in the present time, so that he would be just <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiounta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9) <em>of the one who lives because of Jesus\u2019 faithfulness<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is difficult to judge the Lord Jesus too harshly for forgiving David, or anyone else for that matter, since He accepted the death penalty in our place.\u00a0 But forgiveness as a concept in the Bible doesn\u2019t end
