Part 71"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a continuation of my consideration of <em>Contribute <\/em>(\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>to the needs of the saints, pursue hospitality<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019ll begin with the dark side of contributing (or, sharing in): <em>Do not lay hands on anyone hastily<\/em>, Paul warned a young preacher, <em>and so identify<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) <em>with the sins of others.\u00a0 Keep yourself pure<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 John mirrored this admonition to a leader ordaining elders (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Timothy+5:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Timothy 5:17-22 NET<\/a>) with one addressed to followers receiving leaders (2 John 1:9-11 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Everyone who goes on ahead and does not remain in the teaching of Christ does not have God.\u00a0 The one who remains in this teaching has both the Father and the Son. \u00a0If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house and do not give him any greeting, because the person who gives him a greeting shares <em>(\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> in his evil deeds.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To begin to understand <em>the teaching<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c7\u1fc7, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c7\u03ae\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>) <em>of Christ<\/em> I turn to the Gospel according to Mark.\u00a0 When asked by <em>one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Mark+12:28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experts in the law<\/a>\u2014Which commandment is the most important of all<\/em>\u2014Jesus replied with the <em>love <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\">\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) [that] <em>is the fulfillment<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of the law<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> (Mark 12:29-31 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe most important is: \u2018<strong>Listen, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one<\/strong>. \u00a0<strong>Love <\/strong><em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em><strong> the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength<\/strong>.\u2019 \u00a0The second is: \u2018<strong>Love <\/strong><em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9)<\/em><strong> your neighbor as yourself<\/strong>.\u2019\u00a0 There is no other commandment greater than these.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>That is true<\/em>, <em>Teacher<\/em>, the expert in the law said, <em>you are right to say that<\/em> <strong><em>he is one, and there is no one else besides him<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0And <strong><em>to love <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9)<strong><em> him with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength<\/em><\/strong> and<strong><em> to love <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9)<strong><em> your neighbor as yourself<\/em><\/strong> <em>is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The concept of love as the fulfillment of the law was not foreign to him.\u00a0 <em>When Jesus saw that he had answered thoughtfully, he said to him, \u201cYou are not far <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03bd\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u1f70\u03bd<\/a>) <em>from the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And in this narrow distance I hope to find how the <em>teaching of Christ<\/em> differs from the teaching of religious people.<\/p>\n<p><em>Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven<\/em>, Jesus said to religious people who accused Him of casting out demons <em>by the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+12:24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">power of Beelzebul<\/a>.\u00a0 But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. \u00a0Make a tree good and its fruit<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <em>will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2) <em>will be bad, for a tree is known by its fruit<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Though religious people may know this as it pertains to horticulture, in religious culture the religious mind hopes to make the tree good by making the fruit good.\u00a0 If I do good things I will be good, rather than if I am good I do good.\u00a0 Why make this reversal?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Love the Lord your God with all your heart<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) is a quotation from Deuteronomy 6:5\u2014<em>Love\u00a0the\u00a0Lord<\/em>\u00a0(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>your God<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym\">\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/a><\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05da) <em>with all your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy+6:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heart<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 Here is what Jesus said about the <em>heart<\/em> with which we are to love <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Offspring of vipers<\/em>, He said, speaking still to religious people.\u00a0 <em>How are you able to say anything good, since you are evil?\u00a0 For the mouth speaks from what fills <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>the heart<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The word translated <em>fills<\/em> here is not \u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1 but carries the idea of filled to overflowing.\u00a0 <em>At the present time<\/em>, Paul wrote the Corinthians, <em>your abundance <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1) <em>will meet their need, so that one day their abundance<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1) <em>may also meet your need<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So I take <em>the mouth speaks from<\/em> the abundance (or, overflow) of the <em>heart <\/em>as a psychological truth from the mouth of the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creator<\/a> of the human psyche.<\/p>\n<p>Now if I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/17\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-5\/\">disallow<\/a> that Jesus\u2019 intent was to be as rude and insulting as possible to some of the world\u2019s most accomplished religious people, what can I make of his statement?\u00a0 I don\u2019t think He expressed literal ignorance of how religious people say anything good.\u00a0 He knew He had given them his word.\u00a0 He <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Deuteronomy+8:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quoted<\/a> it, too: <strong><em>Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God<\/em><\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 That is the key, I think, to recall what Jesus knew.<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+2:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">knew<\/a> what was in man.\u00a0 <em>But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1),<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus reiterated this basic knowledge of the human psyche.\u00a0 <em>For out of the heart <\/em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1) <em>come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He knew he had not yet been crucified or resurrected.\u00a0 He knew that the religious people before Him had not yet <em>been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so<\/em> [they] <em>too may live a new life<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He knew their <em>old man was <\/em>[not yet] <em>crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate<\/em> [them], <em>so that<\/em> [they] <em>would no longer be enslaved to sin<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He knew He had not yet sent the Holy Spirit to fill them with his <em>love <\/em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7), <em>joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Do not leave Jerusalem<\/em>, He told his disciples after his resurrection, <em>but wait there for what my Father promised, which you heard about from me. \u00a0For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 You <em>will receive power<\/em>, He promised them, <em>when the Holy Spirit has come upon you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Given this knowledge Jesus\u2019 words sound more like wonder and perhaps even a grudging admiration at how near to the kingdom of God these particular religious people had come on their own.\u00a0 Though I called the distance narrow and recognize that the difference between the teaching of Christ and that of religious people is subtle, the gap is unbridgeable apart from <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>hovah\u2019s <\/em>incarnation, crucifixion and resurrection.\u00a0 Not only is it impossible to love Him with all our evil hearts, our hard hearts love our religious rules more than our fellow human beings (Mark 3:1-6 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then Jesus entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a withered hand.\u00a0 They watched Jesus closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they could accuse him.\u00a0 So he said to the man who had the withered hand, \u201cStand up among all these people.\u201d\u00a0 Then he said to them, \u201cIs it lawful to do good on the Sabbath, or evil, to save a life or destroy it?\u201d \u00a0But they were silent.\u00a0 After looking around at them in anger, grieved by the hardness of their hearts <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1)<\/em>, he said to the man, \u201cStretch out your hand.\u201d \u00a0He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.\u00a0 So the Pharisees went out immediately<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote31sym\">began plotting<\/a> with the Herodians, as to how they could assassinate him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We think our religious works merit special privilege or indulgence relative to those sinners who don\u2019t even try to do good (Ezekiel 18:26-29 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When a righteous person turns back from his righteousness and practices wrongdoing, he will die for it; because of the wrongdoing he has done, he will die. \u00a0When a wicked person turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will preserve his life. \u00a0Because he considered and turned from all the sins he had done, he will surely live; he will not die. \u00a0Yet the house of Israel says, \u2018The Lord\u2019s conduct is unjust!\u2019 \u00a0Is my conduct unjust, O house of Israel? \u00a0Is it not your conduct that is unjust?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, our continued rejection of Jesus\u2019 salvation (whether in whole or in part) opens the door of mercy to more sinners (Romans 11:11, 12, 15, 22, 23 NET)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I ask then, <em>[Israel]<\/em> did not stumble into an irrevocable fall, did they? \u00a0Absolutely not! \u00a0But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make Israel jealous. \u00a0Now if their transgression means riches for the world and their defeat means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full restoration bring?<\/p>\n<p>For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?<\/p>\n<p>Notice therefore the kindness and harshness of God \u2013 harshness toward those who have fallen, but God\u2019s kindness toward you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. \u00a0And even they \u2013 if they do not continue in their unbelief \u2013 will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>For this reason I tell you<\/em>, Jesus said to religious people, <em>that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>But the fruit<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03c2) <em>of the Spirit<\/em>, Paul wrote the Galatians, <em>is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. \u00a0Against such things there is no law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So religious people, actors at heart, reverse Jesus\u2019 dictum, <em>Make a tree good and its fruit<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2) <em>will be good<\/em>.\u00a0 This, in a word, is our unbelief.<\/p>\n<p>Religious people do not believe they <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/02\/26\/romans-part-70\/#_needs1\">need<\/a> to be baptized by Jesus in the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 We do not believe that his Father knows our <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/02\/26\/romans-part-70\/#_needs2\">needs<\/a> before we ask Him\u2014or that He is willing to supply our <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/02\/26\/romans-part-70\/#_needs3\">needs<\/a>.\u00a0 We don\u2019t accept that our most pressing <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/02\/26\/romans-part-70\/#_needs4\">need<\/a> is to sit at Jesus\u2019 feet, to listen and to live <strong><em>by every word that comes from the mouth of God<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 True, our unbelief is a continuum from ignorance of Jesus\u2019 salvation to the selfish preference for some other way\u2014\u201cMy way.\u201d\u00a0 But all lead to the same outcome: the vain attempt to make ourselves good by doing good deeds.\u00a0 <em>You are the ones who justify yourselves in men\u2019s eyes<\/em>, Jesus said to religious people, <em>but God knows your hearts<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/03\/14\/romans-part-71\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>But I say, live by the Spirit<\/em>, Paul wrote the
