My bias<\/a> that\u2014He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked<\/em>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014prophesies Jesus\u2019 return to earth to preach the Gospel effectively (as opposed to executing people for a thousand years) led me to investigate just who the wicked<\/em> are.\u00a0 I found<\/a> a succinct definition of wicked sinners<\/em> as those who would not Stop trusting in human beings, whose life\u2019s breath is in their nostrils.<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Isaiah\u2019s prophecy about the life these wicked sinners<\/em> lead continued (Isaiah 3:12-15)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Lord (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) comes to pronounce judgment on the leaders of his people and their officials.\u00a0 He says, \u201cIt is you who have ruined the vineyard!\u00a0 You have stashed in your houses what you have stolen from the poor. \u00a0<\/em><\/td>\nThe Lord himself will enter into judgment with the elders of the people and with their rulers. But you, why have you burned my vineyard, and why is the spoil of the poor in your houses?<\/td>\nThe LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Why do you crush my people and grind the faces of the poor?\u201d\u00a0 The sovereign (\u02bc\u0103d\u00f4n\u00e2y<\/a><\/em>, \u05d0\u05d3\u05e0\u05d9) Lord (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) who commands armies has spoken.<\/td>\nWhy do you wrong my people and shame the face of the poor? [In the Septuagint \u201cThis is what the Lord says\u201d begins verse 16.]<\/td>\nWhat mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord GOD of hosts.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The NET translators explained their word choices in verse 12 in a long note (29<\/a>).\u00a0 Perhaps only the leaders<\/em> (z\u00e2q\u00ean<\/a><\/em>, \u05d6\u05e7\u05e0\u05d9) and officials<\/em> (\u015bar<\/a><\/em>, \u05d5\u05e9\u05c1\u05e8\u05d9\u05d5) were the wicked sinners<\/em>, but I\u2019m not hearing<\/a> it that way.\u00a0 I think the leaders<\/em> and officials<\/em> merited special mention because they led and encouraged yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>people to become wicked sinners<\/em>, those who trust in human beings, who rebel<\/a><\/em> (m\u00e2r\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, \u05dc\u05de\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea) against yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, both their words<\/em> (l\u00e2sh\u00f4n<\/a><\/em>, \u05dc\u05e9\u05d5\u05e0\u05dd) and their actions<\/em> (ma\u02bd\u0103l\u00e2l<\/a><\/em>, \u05d5\u05de\u05e2\u05dc\u05dc\u05d9\u05d4\u05dd).\u00a0 This definition of wicked sinners<\/em> more or less applies to all of us.\u00a0 As a case in point I\u2019ll quote from a blog I receive regularly.<\/p>\n

<\/a>John Wesley Reid<\/a> ended a post<\/a> with advice from his pastor:\u00a0 \u201cMy pastor laid out a pretty solid approach to avoiding sexual temptation, while the model can be used for any form of temptation.\u201d\u00a0 It was essentially a to-do list: refuse, consider the consequences, focus on God and ignore the lies of the enemy, avoid\/run, and accountability.\u00a0 I asked Mr. Reid if this was presented as an alternative or adjunct to our death to sin and the fruit of the Spirit, but haven\u2019t received a reply.\u00a0 He may not remember. \u00a0It is exactly the kind of list I would have fixated on to the exclusion of everything else.<\/p>\n

The list follows in detail with my comments:<\/p>\n

Refuse<\/strong><\/em>
\n Just say no. Remember that you\u2019re made for more than this.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>\u201cJust say no\u201d<\/a> from the Nancy Reagan<\/a> anti-drug campaign reminds me of yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> words to Cain (Genesis 4:6, 7 NET):<\/p>\n

Why are you angry, and why is your expression downcast? [Table<\/a>]<\/em> Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? \u00a0But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door.\u00a0 It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>This is where sin <\/em>(cha\u1e6d\u1e6d\u00e2\u02bc\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, \u05d7\u05d8\u05d0\u05ea) enters the pages of the Bible, pictured as a four-legged beast about to pounce on its prey, Cain.\u00a0 And this is yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> at his most aloof.\u00a0 He prophesies what is about to happen to Cain and says simply\u2014rule (m\u00e2shal<\/a><\/em>, \u05ea\u05de\u05e9\u05dc).\u00a0 <\/a>As I\u2019ve said before I don\u2019t know Hebrew, but you must subdue it<\/em> looks and sounds to me like a religious mind trying to turn a word into a law long before the law was given.\u00a0 In fact, knowing what is about to happen and what He is not doing about it, ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> seems to be actively not<\/em> making a specific commandment for Cain to disobey.<\/p>\n

Cain said to his brother Abel, \u201cLet\u2019s go out to the field.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Though my religious mind wants to argue that Cain was more wicked than itself, Cain was a fair representative of the descendants of Adam.\u00a0 Seth<\/a> wasn\u2019t the only one born in Adam\u2019s own likeness, according to his image<\/em>.\u00a0 On the contrary, though Adam and Eve were made <\/em>(\u02bd\u00e2\u015b\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, \u05e2\u05e9\u05c1\u05d4) originally in the likeness of God<\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a> (\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/a><\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd) after he violated<\/a> God\u2019s command<\/a> Adam had children in his own likeness, according to his image<\/em>.\u00a0 Look, I was guilty of sin <\/em>(\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/a><\/em>, \u05d1\u05e2\u05d5\u05d5\u05df; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) from birth<\/em>, David confessed, a sinner<\/em> (ch\u00ea\u1e6d\u02bc<\/a><\/em>, \u05d5\u05d1\u05d7\u05d8\u05d0; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03b9\u03c2, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) the moment my mother conceived me<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul explained (Romans 5:12-19 NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

So then, just as sin (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> entered the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all people because all sinned \u2013 for before the law was given, sin was in the world, but there is no accounting for sin when there is no law. \u00a0Yet death reigned from Adam until Moses<\/a> even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam (who is a type of the coming one) transgressed. \u00a0But the gracious gift is not like the transgression. \u00a0For if the many died through the transgression of the one man, how much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man Jesus Christ multiply to the many! \u00a0And the gift is not like the one who sinned. \u00a0For judgment (\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, resulting from the one transgression, led to condemnation (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, but the gracious gift from the many failures led to justification. \u00a0For if, by the transgression of the one man, death reigned through the one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ!<\/p>\n

Consequently, just as condemnation (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1)<\/em> for all people came through one transgression, so too through the one righteous act came righteousness leading to life for all people. \u00a0For just as through the disobedience of the one man many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of one man many will be made righteous.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Again Paul contrasted the image of Adam and the image of Christ (1 Corinthians 15:20-22, 45-49 NET):<\/p>\n

But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. \u00a0For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead also came through a man. \u00a0For just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.<\/p>\n

So also it is written, \u201cThe first man<\/em><\/strong>, Adam<\/strong>, became a living person<\/strong><\/em>\u201d; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. \u00a0However, the spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and then the spiritual. \u00a0The first man is from the earth, made of dust; the second man is from heaven. \u00a0Like the one made of dust, so too are those made of dust, and like the one from heaven, so too those who are heavenly. \u00a0And just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, let us also bear the image of the man of heaven.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI tell you the solemn truth<\/em>,\u201d Jesus said to Nicodemus, \u201cunless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. \u00a0What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. \u00a0Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u2018You must all be born from above.\u2019\u201d<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So if I am tempted to sin and the Holy Spirit reminds me\u2014you are more valuable than many sparrows<\/em>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014or\u2014 do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own<\/em>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014or any other Scripture, and I hear and believe and turn from that sin, that is walking or living by the Spirit<\/em>.\u00a0 But to turn back then and say\u2014I refused to sin; I just said no; I ruled\u2014is to misunderstand what happened, mislead those who hear me and grieve<\/a> the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n

Consider the consequences<\/strong><\/em>
\n Sin fosters sin and sexual sin carries implications of insecurity and a lack of self-worth.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is Old Testament law plain and simple. \u00a0Today I invoke heaven and earth as a witness against you that I have set life and death, blessing and curse, before you.\u00a0 Therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live!<\/em>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And, Then Joshua read aloud all the words of the law, including the blessings and the curses, just as they are written in the law scroll<\/em>.[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 We know how this worked out for Israel: not only did they fail to obey yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> law, they rejected<\/a> Him \u00a0when He came to forgive<\/a> them for it and fulfill<\/a><\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) the law and the prophets.<\/p>\n

Is the law therefore opposed to the promises of God?\u00a0 Absolutely not!\u00a0 For if a law had been given that was able to give life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.\u00a0 But the scripture imprisoned everything and everyone under sin so that the promise could be given \u2013 because of the faithfulness of Jesus Christ \u2013 to those who believe<\/em>.[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Through the law comes the knowledge of sin<\/em>.[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God achieved what the law could not do because it was weakened through the flesh<\/em>,[13]<\/sup><\/a> born in the likeness <\/em>of Adam, according to his image<\/em>.\u00a0 If I try to fulfill my desire for righteousness by obeying rules I play to sin\u2019s strength; the power of sin is the law<\/em>.[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For I don\u2019t understand what I am doing.\u00a0 For I do not do what I want \u2013 instead, I do what I hate. \u00a0But if I do what I don\u2019t want, I agree that the law is good. \u00a0But now it is no longer me doing it, but sin that lives in me. \u00a0For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh.\u00a0 For I want to do the good, but I cannot do it. \u00a0For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want! \u00a0Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but sin that lives in me.<\/em>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For God achieved what the law could not do because it was weakened through the flesh.\u00a0 By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and concerning sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous requirement of the law may be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit<\/em>.[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you could be joined to another, to the one who was raised from the dead, to bear fruit to God. \u00a0For when we were in the flesh, the sinful desires, aroused by the law, were active in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. \u00a0But now we have been released from the law, because we have died to what controlled us, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit and not under the old written code<\/em>.[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For those who live according to the flesh have their outlook shaped by the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit. \u00a0For the outlook of the flesh is death, but the outlook of the Spirit is life and peace, because the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so. \u00a0Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. \u00a0You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you<\/em>.[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

When Olive (Emma Stone<\/a>) finally confessed her fake prostitution in the movie \u201cEasy A<\/a>\u201d, her mother (Patricia Clarkson<\/a>) shocked her daughter, confessing:<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a similar situation when I was your age.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Olive asks incredulously.\u00a0 \u201cEveryone called you a slut?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a horrible reputation and people said awful things about me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I was a slut.\u00a0 I slept with a whole bunch of people.\u00a0 A slew, a heap, a peck.\u00a0 Mostly Guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry, I got around.\u00a0 Before I met Dad, I had incredibly low self-worth.\u201d<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t say that I think much about my self-worth.\u00a0 I am not loved because I am worthy but because God is love<\/em> (1 John 4:7-19<\/a>).\u00a0 I do consider whether He is getting what He is owed out of me.\u00a0 Jesus said, So you too, when you have done everything you were commanded to do, should say, \u201cWe are slaves<\/a><\/em> (\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) undeserving of special praise; we have only done what was our duty.\u201d<\/em> [19]<\/sup><\/a> The Greek word translated was our duty<\/em> is \u1f60\u03c6\u03b5\u03af\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd (a form of \u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03af\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>), literally \u201cwhat was owed.\u201d\u00a0 Why is it owed?<\/p>\n

Aren\u2019t five sparrows sold for two pennies?<\/em> \u00a0Jesus asked.\u00a0 Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. \u00a0In fact, even the hairs on your head are all numbered. \u00a0Do not be afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows<\/em>.[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And my God will supply your every need according to his glorious riches<\/a> in Christ Jesus<\/em>,[21]<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote the Philippians, including the gift of righteousness<\/a><\/em>, the love <\/em>that is the fulfillment of the law<\/a><\/em>, the fruit<\/a> of his Spirit.\u00a0 But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh<\/em>.[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
