I\u2019ll continue to consider the dark side of Contribute <\/em>(\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) to the needs of the saints, pursue hospitality<\/em>;[1]<\/sup><\/a> namely (2 John 1:9-11 NET):<\/p>\n

Everyone who goes on ahead and does not remain in the teaching of Christ does not have God.\u00a0 The one who remains in this teaching has both the Father and the Son. \u00a0If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house and do not give him any greeting, because the person who gives him a greeting shares (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> in his evil deeds.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>I turn here to Love the Lord your God<\/em><\/strong>\u2026with all your mind <\/em><\/strong>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>).[2]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Jesus didn\u2019t say anything negative about the Pharisees\u2019 or the law experts\u2019 \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2.\u00a0 He opened his disciples\u2019 \u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd, implying that they were closed formerly: Then he opened their minds<\/em> (\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd, a form of \u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2<\/a>) so they could understand <\/em>(\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b9\u1f73\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) the scriptures<\/em>\u2026[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 If I had known this when I began this study would I have called it something other than the religious mind<\/em>?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 I\u2019m a Gentile with a philosophical bent<\/a> to my mind.\u00a0 Paul had something to say about that even if Jesus did not.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Though Pharisees and law experts might not have considered a Gentile mind religious<\/a><\/em>, I\u2019m using the term to mean all human efforts to satisfy (or, replace) a god or God (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>).\u00a0 Even atheists can have religious <\/em>minds as I use the term.\u00a0 In fact my religious mind eventually undermined my atheism.\u00a0 When I wanted to consider myself good<\/em> again I invented \u201cmore realistic\u201d rules than ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> to obey.\u00a0 I failed to obey them.\u00a0 So I made \u201ceven more realistic\u201d rules.\u00a0 Eventually my standards were so low even I realized they were unworkable.\u00a0 And I still wasn\u2019t keeping them!<\/p>\n

So I say this, and insist in the Lord<\/em>, Paul wrote the church at Ephesus, that you no longer live as the Gentiles<\/a> do, in the futility of their thinking<\/em> (\u03bd\u03bf\u1f78\u03c2, another form of \u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2). \u00a0They are darkened in their understanding<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1f77\u1fb3, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1), being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance <\/em>(\u1f04\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u1f04\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts<\/em>.[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So, loving ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h with all your mind<\/em> is equivalent to loving Him with all of one\u2019s understanding<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The solution, by the way, to futile thinking was: You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside the old<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) man <\/em>(\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires, to be renewed in the spirit of your mind <\/em>(\u03bd\u03bf\u1f78\u03c2, another form of \u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c2), and to put on the new man who has been created in God\u2019s image \u2013 in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The old man<\/em> we are to lay aside<\/em> is our old<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u1f78\u03c2) man <\/em>(\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2) [that] was crucified with<\/em> [Christ] so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin<\/em>.[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Again, sharing in his death and resurrection through faith in Jesus proves to be an important aspect of the Gospel<\/a> (Romans 6:3, 4 NET).<\/p>\n

Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And you were at one time strangers and enemies in your minds<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1f77\u1fb3, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1) as expressed through your evil deeds<\/em>,[7]<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote Gentiles in Colossae.\u00a0 The Greek words translated evil deeds<\/a><\/em> here are \u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2 \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2 \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2 (a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>).\u00a0 In reference to Gentiles I have no doubt that Paul had sins <\/em>in view, but even as an atheist my works were \u201cfull of labours, annoyances, and hardships.\u201d\u00a0 And although you were dead in your<\/a> transgressions and sins<\/em>, Paul wrote Gentiles in Ephesus, in which you formerly lived according to this world\u2019s present path, according to the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the ruler of the spirit that is now energizing the sons of disobedience <\/em>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>), among whom all of us<\/em> [even a former Pharisee<\/a>] also formerly lived out our lives in the cravings of our flesh<\/a>, indulging the desires of the flesh and the mind<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1), and were by nature children of wrath even as the rest<\/em>\u2026[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But God<\/em>, Paul continued as he introduced the solution to this problem.\u00a0 But first I want to consider ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> promise of a new covenant.\u00a0 For this is the covenant that I will establish with the house of Israel after those days<\/em><\/strong>, says the Lord<\/strong>. \u00a0I will put my laws in their minds<\/strong> <\/em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1) and I will inscribe them on their hearts<\/em><\/strong> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>). \u00a0And I will be their God and they will be my people<\/strong>.<\/em>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And again, This is the covenant that I will establish with them after those days<\/em><\/strong>, says the Lord<\/strong>. But God, being rich in mercy<\/em>, Paul continued writing Gentiles in Ephesus, because of his great love with which he loved us, even though we were dead in transgressions, made us alive together with Christ \u2013 by grace you are saved! \u2013and he raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, to demonstrate in the coming ages the surpassing wealth of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. \u00a0For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast. \u00a0For we are his workmanship, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them<\/em>.[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Love the Lord your God<\/em><\/strong>\u2026with all your strength<\/em><\/strong> (\u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u03cd\u03c2<\/a>).[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ<\/em>, Paul wrote Gentiles at Ephesus, the Father of glory, may give you spiritual wisdom and revelation in your growing knowledge <\/em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b3\u03bd\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) of him, \u2013 since the eyes of your heart have been enlightened \u2013 so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the incomparable greatness of his power toward us who believe, as displayed in the exercise of his immense <\/em>(\u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u03cd\u03c2) strength<\/em>.[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Finally<\/em>, he added, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength<\/em> (\u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u03cd\u03c2) of his power<\/em>.[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

To attempt to function on our own away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength<\/em> (\u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u03cd\u03c2) was Paul\u2019s description of eternal destruction<\/em>: They will undergo the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength<\/em>\u2026[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Whoever speaks<\/em>, Peter wrote, let it be with God\u2019s words. \u00a0Whoever serves, do so with the strength<\/em> (\u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c2, a form of \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u03cd\u03c2) that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. \u00a0To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. \u00a0Amen<\/em>.[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 If we believe Him his \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c2 is our \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c2, the \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c2 with which we love ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This[20]<\/sup><\/a> is the teaching of Christ<\/em> as presented in the New Testament as opposed to the teaching of the religious mind.\u00a0 Is it the teaching your teachers bring to you?\u00a0 If not the person who gives him a greeting shares in his evil deeds<\/em>, according to John.\u00a0 I would be very wary of supporting that teacher financially.\u00a0 This gives us a context for Paul\u2019s admonition (Galatians 6:6-10 NET)<\/p>\n

Now the one who receives instruction in the word must share (\u039a\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03c4\u03c9, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> all good things (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> with the one who teaches it. \u00a0Do not be deceived.\u00a0 God will not be made a fool.\u00a0 For a person will reap what he sows, because the person who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. \u00a0So we must not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not give up. \u00a0So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us do good (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u1f78\u03bd, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em> to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The teaching of Christ sows to the Spirit<\/em>.\u00a0 The teaching of the religious mind sows to<\/em> [our] own flesh<\/em>. \u00a0Money is not the only, or even the primary, good <\/em>thing to share with the teacher of the word, the one who remains in the teaching of Christ<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cNo servant can serve two masters,\u201d<\/em> Jesus said, \u201cfor either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.\u00a0 You cannot serve God and money.\u201d\u00a0 The Pharisees<\/em> [e.g., the New Testament epitome of those with religious minds] (who loved money) heard all this and ridiculed him<\/em>.[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

And need <\/em>is the key to help make a determination what to contribute or share in.\u00a0 The primary needs of all believers are: 1) the\u00a0need<\/a>\u00a0to be baptized by Jesus in the Holy Spirit; 2) to believe that his Father knows our\u00a0needs<\/a>\u00a0before we ask Him, and that He is willing to supply our\u00a0needs<\/a>; and 3) to accept that our most pressing\u00a0need<\/a> is to sit at Jesus\u2019 feet, to listen and to live\u00a0by every word<\/a> that comes from the mouth of God<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

But whoever has the world\u2019s possessions and sees his fellow Christian in need <\/em>(\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1<\/a>), John wrote, and shuts off his compassion against him, how can the love of God reside in such a person?<\/em>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Make every effort to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way<\/em>, Paul wrote Titus, make sure they have what they need<\/em> (\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b7\u03b4\u1f72\u03bd \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2 \u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03c0\u1fc3; so that nothing or no one of theirs is left behind). \u00a0Here is another way that our people can learn to engage in good works to meet pressing needs<\/em> (\u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, another form of \u03c7\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1) and so not be unfruitful<\/em>.[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

My purpose was not to minimize these more obvious aspects of contributing to the needs of the saints, but to highlight how much broader this contributing, or sharing in, actually is in the New Testament.\u00a0 I\u2019ll conclude this with Peter\u2019s contribution to the needs of the saints as something which we all share with one another (1 Peter 4:12-14 NET):<\/p>\n

Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you. \u00a0But rejoice (\u03c7\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, a form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> in the degree that you have shared (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> in the sufferings (\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03b9\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03b9\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> and be glad (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9)<\/em>.\u00a0 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God<\/em><\/strong>, rests<\/em><\/strong> on you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Do not neglect hospitality<\/em> (\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03be\u03b5\u03bd\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 , a form of \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03be\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), because through it some have entertained angels without knowing it<\/em>.[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is the only other occurrence of a form of \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03be\u03af\u03b1 in the New Testament.\u00a0 But I hope I have been persuasive that when Paul wrote<\/a> pursue hospitality<\/em> (\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03be\u03b5\u03bd\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03be\u03af\u03b1) he did not intend to pen a \u201claw of Paul<\/a>,\u201d a rule to be obeyed, something to pursue <\/em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u1f7d\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ce\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) in one\u2019s own strength.\u00a0 His intent was that this \u201clove to strangers\u201d would flow naturally (e.g., super<\/em>naturally) from the Spirit of God through the believer and out into the world, one of the good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them<\/em>.[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
