<em>shepherd<\/em>).\u00a0 <em>After assembling all the chief priests and experts in the law,<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+2:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">King Herod<\/a>] <em>asked them where the Christ was to be born. \u00a0\u201cIn Bethlehem of Judea,\u201d they said, \u201cfor it is written this way by the prophet:<\/em> \u2018<strong><em>And<\/em><\/strong><em> <strong>you, Bethlehem,<\/strong> in the land of Judah, <strong>are in no way least among the rulers <\/strong><\/em>(\u1f21\u03b3\u03b5\u03bc\u1f79\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f21\u03b3\u03b5\u03bc\u03ce\u03bd\">\u1f21\u03b3\u03b5\u03bc\u03ce\u03bd<\/a>)<strong><em> of Judah,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>for out of you will come a ruler <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f21\u03b3\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f21\u03b3\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u1f21\u03b3\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<strong><em> who will shepherd <\/em><\/strong>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)<strong><em> my people Israel<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em>\u2019\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/05\/28\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-14\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I didn\u2019t make too much of it at first.<\/p>\n<p>I found the following more troubling: <em>And to the one who conquers and who continues in my deeds until the end, I will give him authority<\/em> <em>over the nations \u2013<\/em> <strong><em>he will rule <\/em><\/strong>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)<strong><em> them with an iron rod <\/em><\/strong><em>and like clay jars he will break them to pieces, just as I have received the right to rule from my Father \u2013 and I will give him the morning star<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/05\/28\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-14\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Who conquers the world (1 John 5:1-5 NET)?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been fathered by God, and everyone who loves the father loves the child fathered by him. \u00a0By this we know that we love the children of God: whenever we love God and obey <em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> his <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+5:38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">commandments<\/a>. \u00a0For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments. And his commandments do not weigh us down, because everyone who has been fathered by God conquers <em>(\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u1fb7, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9\">\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> the world.\u00a0 This is the conquering power <em>(\u03bd\u1f77\u03ba\u03b7, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bd\u03af\u03ba\u03b7\">\u03bd\u03af\u03ba\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> that has conquered <em>(\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1, another form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9)<\/em> the world: our faith. \u00a0Now who is the person who has conquered <em>(\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9)<\/em> the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The words, <em>to the one who conquers<\/em>, are the translation of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u1ff6\u03bd (another form of \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c9) in Revelation 2:26 (NET).\u00a0 I take <em>continues in my deeds<\/em> to mean the <em>deeds <\/em>which <em>have been <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+3:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">done in God<\/a><\/em>, the deeds which flow from the <em>love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control<\/em> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Holy Spirit<\/a>.\u00a0 I wondered how believing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and living by the Spirit qualified someone to rule the nations and break them to pieces like clay jars.\u00a0 Here again, <em>rule<\/em> is <em>shepherd<\/em> in Greek.<\/p>\n<p>This time I pursued it.\u00a0 A note in the NET (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Revelation+2:27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">90<\/a>) informs that, <strong><em>he will rule them with an iron rod <\/em><\/strong><em>and like clay jars he will break them to pieces<\/em>, is a quotation of Psalm 2:9.\u00a0 Note <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Psalms+2:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">26<\/a> on Psalm 2:9 after the words, <em>You will break them<\/em>, reads: \u201cThe LXX reads \u2018you will shepherd them.\u2019 \u00a0This reading, quoted in the Greek text of the NT in Rev 2:27; 12:5; 19:15, assumes a different vocalization of the consonantal Hebrew text and understands the verb as \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4 (ra\u2019ah, \u2018to shepherd\u2019) rather than \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05e2 (ra\u2019a\u2019, \u2018to break\u2019). \u00a0But the presence of \u05e0\u05b8\u05e4\u05b7\u05e5 (nafats, \u2018to smash\u2019) in the next line strongly favors the MT vocalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_homographs\"><\/a>The Hebrew words \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4 (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_r\u00e2\u02bd\u00e2h\">ra\u2019ah<\/a> H7462) and \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05e2 (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_r\u00e2\u02bda\u02bd\">ra\u2019a\u2019<\/a> H7489) are apparently homographs in some forms, words that are spelled the same but have different meanings.\u00a0 We determine their meanings primarily by context: The wind blows my hair as I wind my watch.\u00a0 Here are some of the instances in the id=\"_shepherd\"><\/a>This is where <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+14:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accountability<\/a> comes into play for me.\u00a0 I can\u2019t stand before <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Corinthians+5:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesus<\/a> and tell Him (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Revelation+1:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revelation 1:12-20 NET<\/a>) He quoted an erroneous translation of Psalm 2:9 in Revelation 2:27 but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/Judaism\/Masoretic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Masoretes<\/a> corrected his mistake.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 I thoroughly appreciate the notes in the NET.\u00a0 I long for more.\u00a0 But I can\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Isaiah+2:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">follow<\/a> the translators on this point.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said <em>shepherd<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9).\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/psa\/2\/9\/t_bibles_480009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a> implies that the original Hebrew word was <em>shepherd<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2, another form of <a href=\"http:\/\/studybible.info\/LXX_WH\/Psalm%202:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) before Israel rejected Jesus as href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/05\/28\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-14\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> seems fairly obvious, to invalidate Jesus as Messiah: Jesus did not break the Gentile nations with an iron scepter nor smash them like a potter\u2019s jar, therefore Jesus was not the Messiah.\u00a0 But I\u2019m not convinced that believing He will return to do that is the best retort.\u00a0 Perhaps it is the human religious mind\u2019s last desperate hope for vindication.\u00a0 Granted, accepting <em>shepherd<\/em> as the correct homograph in Psalm 2:9 won\u2019t establish that.\u00a0 <em>Shepherd<\/em> was used nearly as ironically in Psalm 49:14 (NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Psalms+49:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fools<\/a>]<\/em> will travel to Sheol like sheep, with death as their shepherd.\u00a0 The godly will rule over them when the day of vindication dawns; Sheol will consume their bodies and they will no longer live in impressive houses.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But it opens the door to consider other homographs for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2phats\">n\u00e2phats<\/a><\/em> (\u05ea\u05e0\u05e4\u05e6\u05dd) since it caused the NET translators to favor the Masoretes over Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll turn my attention to a more thorough consideration of \u1f61\u03c2 \u03c4\u1f70 \u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b7 \u03c4\u1f70 \u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u1f70 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u1f77\u03b2\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 (<em>like clay jars he will break them to pieces<\/em>) in Revelation.\u00a0 My contention is that the translation of the Greek has been shaded significantly to conform to the image of Jesus using his shepherd\u2019s rod<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/05\/28\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-14\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> to shatter the nations like fired pottery in <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Psalms+2:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psalm 2:9<\/a> of the Masoretic text.\u00a0 This shading didn\u2019t begin with the NET translators.<\/p>\n<p>The King James translators rendered it, <em>as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers<\/em>.\u00a0 There is a word for <em>potter<\/em> in Greek: <em>Has the potter<\/em> (<a Greek word translated \u201calabaster box\u201d in the KJV, as well as \u201cflask,\u201d \u201cjar\u201d and \u201cvial\u201d in other translations, is\u00a0alabastron, which can also mean \u201cperfume vase\u201d\u2026.The boxes were often sealed or made fast with wax, to prevent the perfume from escaping.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/05\/28\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-14\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A man described his son to (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2) was in the prophecy Jesus read from Isaiah in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.textusreceptusbibles.com\/Interlinear\/42004018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">textus receptus<\/a>: <em>The Spirit of the Lord<\/em>\u00a0<em>is<\/em> <em>upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal <\/em>(\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, a form of <a <em>broken <\/em>(\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u1fd6\u03c6\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03b2\u03c9) <em>the shackles in pieces<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Mark+5:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark 5:4 NET<\/a>) or rubbed them together until he wriggled free.\u00a0 A form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03b2\u03c9 was contrasted to a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03b3\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9 in Matthew 12:20 (NET): <em>He will not break<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1f71\u03be\u03b5\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03b3\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03b3\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) smoldering wick, until he brings justice to victory<\/em>.\u00a0 But in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/isa\/42\/3\/t_bibles_721003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a> \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u1f77\u03c8\u03b5\u03b9 (another form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03b2\u03c9) was used in place of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1f71\u03be\u03b5\u03b9 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/lexicon\/ql.html#qlaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c4\u03b5\u03b8\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> was used in place of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd.<\/p>\n<p>That wouldn\u2019t be particularly problematic.\u00a0 I\u2019m perfectly willing to prefer the New Testament to the Septuagint.\u00a0 My primary interest in the Septuagint is as corroboration of the instances where the Masoretes altered the Hebrew of the Old Testament.\u00a0 In John 19, however, forms of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03b3\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9 were used interchangeably with a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03b2\u03c9 (John 19:31-33, 36 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies should not stay on the crosses on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was an especially important one), the Jewish these things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled, \u201c<strong><em>Not a bone of his will be broken<\/em><\/strong>
