Live in harmony<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) with one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly. \u00a0Do not be conceited<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I can\u2019t find live<\/em> or harmony<\/em> in the Greek here, \u03c4\u1f78 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1f78 \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03ae\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2.\u00a0 The phrase translated do not be haughty<\/em> is \u03bc\u1f74 \u03c4\u1f70 \u1f51\u03c8\u03b7\u03bb\u1f70 \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 (literally, \u201cno lofty thought\u201d or \u201cno high-mindedness\u201d).\u00a0 I would translate the first sentence, \u201cThink of one another\u201d or \u201cConsider one another, not generalities, but specifics,\u201d the down and dirty, nitty-gritty of another\u2019s life and outlook.\u00a0 For by the grace given to me<\/em>, Paul already wrote, I say to every one of you not to think more highly<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03ce<\/a>) of yourself than you ought to think <\/em>(\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) but to think<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) with sober discernment <\/em>(\u03c3\u03c9\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, a form of \u03c3\u03c9\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), as God has distributed to each of you a measure of faith<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul prayed, and I assume believed<\/em>, that God would give his readers this thinking (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) of one another, translated unity<\/em> below: \u00a0For everything that was written in former times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u1fc6\u03c2, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae<\/a>) and through encouragement<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) of the scriptures we may have hope. \u00a0Now may the God of endurance<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u1fc6\u03c2, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae) and comfort<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) give you unity<\/em> with one another <\/em>(\u03c4\u1f78 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1f78 \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd \u1f10\u03bd \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03ae\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2) in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. \u00a0So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him: \u201cGod forbid, Lord! \u00a0This must not happen to you!\u201d \u00a0But he turned and said to Peter, \u201cGet behind me, Satan! \u00a0You are a stumbling block to me, because you are not setting your mind<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) on God\u2019s interests, but on man\u2019s.\u201d<\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Mark\u2019s Gospel informs that Jesus spoke this way to Peter after turning and looking at his disciples<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Then Jesus said to his disciples<\/em>, Matthew\u2019s Gospel continued, \u201cIf anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.\u201d<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/a> This his disciples were already doing in the most literal way imaginable, but in their thinking they walked<\/a> according to the flesh.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit had not yet been given<\/a>.\u00a0 As Paul wrote the Romans, those who live<\/em> according to the flesh have their outlook shaped<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) by the things of the flesh<\/em>\u2026[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The Holy Spirit transforms our thinking: but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit<\/em>,[8]<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 Keep thinking<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) about things above, not things on the earth, for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God<\/em>.[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I thank my God every time I remember you<\/em>, Paul wrote believers in Philippi. \u00a0I always pray with joy in my every prayer for all of you because of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. \u00a0For I am sure of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. \u00a0For it is right for me to think<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) this about all of you, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel all of you became partners in God\u2019s grace together with me<\/em>.[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul expounded on this Holy Spirit thinking in his letter to the Philippians (2:1-13; 3:18-21 NET):<\/p>\n

Therefore, if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort provided by love, any fellowship in the Spirit, any affection or mercy, complete my joy and be of the same mind (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>, by having the same love, being united in spirit, and having one purpose (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>. \u00a0Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself. \u00a0Each of you should be concerned not only about your own interests, but about the interests of others as well. \u00a0You should have the same attitude (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> toward one another that Christ Jesus had, who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave, by looking like other men, and by sharing in human nature. \u00a0He humbled himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death \u2013 even death on a cross! \u00a0As a result God exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow\u00a0\u2013 in heaven and on earth and under the earth \u2013 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord [e.g., <\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a>]<\/em> to the glory of God the Father.\u00a0 \u00a0So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b7\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, continue working out your salvation with awe and reverence, \u00a0for the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort \u2013 for the sake of his good pleasure \u2013 is God.<\/p>\n

For many live, about whom I have often told you, and now, with tears, I tell you that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ. \u00a0Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, they exult in their shame, and they think (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> about earthly things. \u00a0But our citizenship is in heaven \u2013 and we also await a savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform these humble bodies of ours into the likeness of his glorious body by means of that power by which he is able to subject all things to himself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul stressed that this thinking is not something we accomplish in the flesh. \u00a0He trusted God to accomplish it through his Spirit (Philippians 3:4b-15 NET):<\/p>\n

If someone thinks (\u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b5\u1fd6, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> he has good reasons to put confidence in human credentials (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03af, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>)<\/em>, I have more: I was circumcised on the eighth day, from the people of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews.\u00a0 I lived according to the law as a Pharisee. \u00a0In my zeal for God I persecuted the church.\u00a0 According to the righteousness stipulated in the law I was blameless. \u00a0But these assets I have come to regard as liabilities because of Christ. \u00a0More than that, I now regard all things as liabilities compared to the far greater value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things \u2013 indeed, I regard them as dung! \u2013 that I may gain Christ, and be found in him, not because I have my own righteousness derived from the law, but because I have the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness \u2013 a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness. \u00a0My aim is to know him, to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings, and to be like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.\u00a0 Not that I have already attained this \u2013 that is, I have not already been perfected \u2013 but I strive to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus also laid hold of me. \u00a0Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. \u00a0Instead I am single-minded [\u1f13\u03bd \u03b4\u03ad; \u201cbut one\u201d or \u201cone moreover\u201d]<\/em>: Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind (\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. \u00a0Therefore let those of us who are \u201cperfect\u201d embrace this point of view (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>. \u00a0If you think (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> otherwise, God will reveal to you the error of your ways.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Galatians Paul was concerned specifically about Gentile believers accepting circumcision as necessary or beneficial, but I think we can hear his words in this context as well, if we were to turn this thinking from the Holy Spirit into a human program to \u201clive in harmony\u201d (Galatians 5:4-10a NET Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n

You who are trying to be declared righteous by the law have been alienated from Christ<\/a>; you have fallen away from grace! \u00a0For through the Spirit, by faith, we wait expectantly for the hope of righteousness. \u00a0For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision carries any weight \u2013 the only thing that matters is faith working through love. \u00a0You were running well; who prevented you from obeying (\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> the truth? \u00a0This persuasion (\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u1f74<\/a>)<\/em> does not come from the one who calls you! \u00a0A little yeast makes the whole batch of dough rise! \u00a0I am confident (\u03c0\u03ad\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03b1, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9)<\/em> in the Lord that you will accept (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> no other view.[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thinking of one another implies a mutual concern: I have great joy in the Lord because now at last you have again expressed your concern<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) for me. (Now I know you were concerned <\/em>[\u1f10\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9] before but had no opportunity to do anything.)<\/em>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And it implies some tolerance for one another\u2019s quirks: One person regards<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) one day holier than other days, and another regards<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) them all alike.\u00a0 Each must be fully convinced <\/em>(\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03b5\u03af\u03c3\u03b8\u03c9, a form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) in his own mind. \u00a0The one who observes<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) the day does<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) it for the Lord<\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

While I don\u2019t doubt that this thinking from the Holy Spirit will result in something like harmony<\/em> or unity<\/em> or agreement<\/em> eventually, I\u2019m not entirely comfortable when forms of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9 are translated agree<\/em>: I appeal to Euodia and to Syntyche to agree<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) in the Lord<\/em>;[14]<\/sup><\/a> and, Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice, set things right, be encouraged, agree<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you<\/em>.[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe that the Holy Spirit meant some form of group-think or committee work.<\/p>\n

The Jerusalem council<\/a> agreed unanimously<\/a> to send a letter to the Gentiles which read: For it seemed best to the Holy Spirit<\/a> and to us not to place any greater burden<\/em> (\u03b2\u03ac\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) on you than these necessary rules<\/em>.[16]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0James\u2019 abbreviated<\/a> version of the law followed.\u00a0 It took individual believers not some corporate entity to set this error aright: For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments.\u00a0 And his commandments do not weigh <\/em>(\u03b2\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c1\u03cd\u03c2<\/a>) us down, because everyone who has been fathered by God conquers the world<\/em>.[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I would like to think that \u03bc\u1f74 \u03b3\u03af\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5 \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9 \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1fbf \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2 (literally, \u201cnot become wise from himself, herself or themselves\u201d) meant to become wise through the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 But Paul used \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9 (a form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) facetiously three other times (Romans 11:25<\/a>, 1 Corinthians 4:10<\/a> and 2 Corinthians 11:19 NET<\/a>).\u00a0 Do not be conceited<\/em> may be an adequate translation.\u00a0 Only Jesus used \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9 seriously (Mathew 10:16-20 NET):<\/p>\n

I am sending you out like sheep surrounded by wolves, so be wise (\u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9 , a form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> as serpents and innocent as doves. \u00a0Beware of people, because they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues. \u00a0And you will be brought before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them and the Gentiles. \u00a0Whenever they hand you over for trial, do not worry about how to speak or what to say<\/a>, for what you should say will be given to you at that time [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0For it is not you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
