Part 81"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I worked on this essay I read an article by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/la-bio-jeffrey-fleishman-staff.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeffrey Fleishman<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apple.news\/AxU5EEXSwRFSXkqMU13YMtg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How an angry national mood is reflected in pop culture<\/a>. \u00a0Two sentences really resonated: 1) &#8220;Our screens and phones fume with righteousness;&#8221; and 2) &#8220;Our shared humanity has been demarcated on smaller and smaller screens that often brim more with quicksilver judgment than open-mindedness.&#8221; \u00a0It struck me as a sort of\u00a0default position that I quote here as contrast to the righteousness of love Paul described.<\/p>\n<p><em>One person regards one day holier than other days, and another regards them all alike<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued his discussion of love.\u00a0 No form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f05\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f05\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> occurs in the text.\u00a0 The concept <em>holier <\/em>is derived from \u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), \u201cto distinguish, to separate, put asunder, to pick out, select, choose,\u201d translated <em>regards<\/em>.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think there is any problem with that translation except that the second <em>regards <\/em>is also \u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9, so <em>another regards<\/em> all days equally holy would be a more balanced translation of the second clause.\u00a0 A note (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+14:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3<\/a>) in the NET acknowledged the literal text: \u201cFor one judges day from day, and one judges all days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Each must be fully convinced<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03c3\u03b8\u03c9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>in his own mind<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 <em>He was fully convinced<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2, another form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) <em>that what God promised he was also able to do<\/em>, Paul wrote of Abraham. \u00a0<em>So indeed it was credited to Abraham as righteousness<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u1fc7, another form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) <em>for all the Gentiles to hear<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> he wrote Timothy.\u00a0 And, <em>You, however, be self-controlled in all things, endure hardship, do an evangelist\u2019s work, fulfill<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1f79\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) <em>your ministry. \u00a0For I am already being poured out as an offering, and the time for me to depart is at hand<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Epaphras, who is one of you<\/em>, Paul wrote believers in Colossae, <em>and a slave of Christ, greets you. \u00a0He is always struggling in prayer on your behalf, so that you may stand mature and fully assured<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, another form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) <em>in all the will of God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This gives me a good picture of the caliber of conviction Paul addressed.\u00a0 A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholic.com\/quickquestions\/did-the-early-church-move-the-sabbath-from-saturday-to-sunday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catholic<\/a> believer may be <em>fully convinced<\/em> that Sunday, the day Jesus arose from death, is the most holy day of the week.\u00a0 A Seventh Day Adventist may be <em>fully convinced<\/em> that Saturday (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventist.org\/fileadmin\/adventist.org\/files\/articles\/official-statements\/28Beliefs-Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">28 Fundamental Beliefs<\/a>, The Sabbath 20), the original Sabbath <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em> consecrated in the law, is more holy.\u00a0 And I may be <em>fully convinced<\/em> that since I began to be led by the Holy Spirit every day is most holy:\u00a0 <em>Consequently a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God. \u00a0For the one who enters God\u2019s rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his own works<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I rest from my own works of sin and my own righteousness (likened to <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Isaiah+64:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">used tampons<\/a>) to rely instead on the <em>righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness \u2013 a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fruit of the Spirit<\/a>, I see every day as the Sabbath.\u00a0 And I\u00a0 understand why Jesus healed so <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#_rest\">stubbornly<\/a> on the Sabbath: to demonstrate beyond the shadow of any doubt that <em>it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> including by the way serving my employer as a slave of Christ.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But love neither <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+14:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">despises<\/a> nor <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+14:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">judges<\/a> us\u2014the Catholic, the Seventh Day Adventist or me\u2014for our differing convictions concerning holy days.<\/p>\n<p><em>The one who observes<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the day does<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) <em>it for the Lord<\/em>, Paul continued.\u00a0 <em>The one who eats, eats for the Lord because he gives thanks to God, and the one who abstains from eating abstains for the Lord, and he gives thanks to God. \u00a0For none of us lives for himself and none dies for himself. \u00a0If we live, we live for the Lord; if we die, we die for the Lord. \u00a0Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord\u2019s<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Then Paul added a somewhat curious aside about Jesus\u2019 rule (\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9\">\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 <em>For this reason Christ died and returned to life, so that he may be the Lord<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u1fc3) <em>of both the dead and the living<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My religion has taught me to add \u201cif I allow it\u201d to an assertion such as this.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned\u00a0to assert my will over the lordship of Jesus.\u00a0 But I notice now that isn\u2019t in the text. \u00a0And certainly the assertion of my authority over his was never my elders\u2019 intent but an unintended consequence of what I now see as a defensive posture: If I refuse or fail to believe sufficiently in Jesus in this lifetime and spend eternity in hell it was not that Christ\u2019s death and life failed to make Him <em>Lord of both the dead and the living<\/em>, but that I didn\u2019t allow his Lordship to be efficacious in my earthly lifetime. \u00a0It is a brilliant maneuver.\u00a0 I\u2019m not convinced it\u2019s true, so I\u2019ll let Paul speak for himself once again: <em>For this reason Christ died and returned to life, so that he may be the Lord<\/em> <em>of both the dead and the living<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>But you who eat vegetables only<\/em>, Paul continued,<em> why do you judge<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) <em>your brother or sister?\u00a0 And you who eat everything \u2013 why do you despise<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>your brother or sister?\u00a0 For we will all stand before the judgment seat<\/em> (\u03b2\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03b2\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1\">\u03b2\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) <em>of God. \u00a0For it is written,<\/em> \u201c<strong><em>As I live<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>says the Lord<\/strong>, <strong>every knee will bow to me<\/strong>, <strong>and every tongue will give praise to God<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure about translating \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>will give praise<\/em> here, no matter how hopeful it sounds.<\/p>\n<p><em>Judas agreed<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03c9\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) <em>and began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul wrote the Philippians, <em>that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow \u2013 in heaven and on earth and under the earth \u2013 and every tongue confess<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) <em>that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>As it is written<\/em>, Paul quoted Psalm 18:49, \u201c<strong><em>Because of this I will confess <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) <strong><em>you among the Gentiles<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>and I will sing praises <\/strong><\/em>(\u03c8\u03b1\u03bb\u1ff6, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c8\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9\">\u03c8\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <strong><em>to your name<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>So confess<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) <em>your sins to one another<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> James wrote.\u00a0 People <em>from Jerusalem<\/em>\u2026<em>confessed <\/em>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) <em>their sins<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> as they were baptized.\u00a0 And in Ephesus, <em>Many of those who had believed came forward, confessing<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) <em>and making their deeds known<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s point here was, <em>Therefore, each of us will give an account<\/em> (\u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2\">\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <em>of himself <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/#sdfootnote25sym\">to God<\/a><\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Of course, if every tongue confesses, what will the outcome be?\u00a0 To be fair and complete, Jesus said, <em>I praise<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) <em>you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to little children<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>On that same occasion Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, \u201cI praise<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) <em>you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to little children. \u00a0Yes, Father, for this was your gracious will.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Perhaps this \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9, agreement with God, confession to God, is a form of praise after all.<\/p>\n<p><em>Therefore we must not pass judgment on one another<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/07\/22\/romans-part-81\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a> Paul concluded, \u039c\u03b7\u03ba\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9 \u03bf\u1f56\u03bd \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1f75\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd (literally, \u201cno longer therefore one another judge\u201d or \u201ctherefore we no longer judge one another\u201d).\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand why the NET translators turned this simple declarative statement into a rule, beyond the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/27\/davids-forgiveness-part-2\/#_social\">social construction<\/a> of our shared religious reality. \u00a0Most translations adopted some form of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/romans\/14-13.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">let us stop<\/a><\/em> here.
