As I worked on this essay I read an article by\u00a0Jeffrey Fleishman<\/a>,\u00a0How an angry national mood is reflected in pop culture<\/a>. \u00a0Two sentences really resonated: 1) “Our screens and phones fume with righteousness;” and 2) “Our shared humanity has been demarcated on smaller and smaller screens that often brim more with quicksilver judgment than open-mindedness.” \u00a0It struck me as a sort of\u00a0default position that I quote here as contrast to the righteousness of love Paul described.<\/p>\n

One person regards one day holier than other days, and another regards them all alike<\/em>,[1]<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued his discussion of love.\u00a0 No form of \u1f05\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> occurs in the text.\u00a0 The concept holier <\/em>is derived from \u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9 (a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), \u201cto distinguish, to separate, put asunder, to pick out, select, choose,\u201d translated regards<\/em>.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think there is any problem with that translation except that the second regards <\/em>is also \u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9, so another regards<\/em> all days equally holy would be a more balanced translation of the second clause.\u00a0 A note (3<\/a>) in the NET acknowledged the literal text: \u201cFor one judges day from day, and one judges all days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each must be fully convinced<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03b5\u1f77\u03c3\u03b8\u03c9, a form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) in his own mind<\/em>,[2]<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued.\u00a0 He was fully convinced<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2, another form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) that what God promised he was also able to do<\/em>, Paul wrote of Abraham. \u00a0So indeed it was credited to Abraham as righteousness<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u1fc7, another form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) for all the Gentiles to hear<\/em>,[4]<\/sup><\/a> he wrote Timothy.\u00a0 And, You, however, be self-controlled in all things, endure hardship, do an evangelist\u2019s work, fulfill<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1f79\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) your ministry. \u00a0For I am already being poured out as an offering, and the time for me to depart is at hand<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Epaphras, who is one of you<\/em>, Paul wrote believers in Colossae, and a slave of Christ, greets you. \u00a0He is always struggling in prayer on your behalf, so that you may stand mature and fully assured<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, another form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) in all the will of God<\/em>.[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

This gives me a good picture of the caliber of conviction Paul addressed.\u00a0 A Catholic<\/a> believer may be fully convinced<\/em> that Sunday, the day Jesus arose from death, is the most holy day of the week.\u00a0 A Seventh Day Adventist may be fully convinced<\/em> that Saturday (28 Fundamental Beliefs<\/a>, The Sabbath 20), the original Sabbath ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em> consecrated in the law, is more holy.\u00a0 And I may be fully convinced<\/em> that since I began to be led by the Holy Spirit every day is most holy:\u00a0 Consequently a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God. \u00a0For the one who enters God\u2019s rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his own works<\/em>.[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

As I rest from my own works of sin and my own righteousness (likened to used tampons<\/a>) to rely instead on the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness \u2013 a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/em>,[8]<\/sup><\/a> the fruit of the Spirit<\/a>, I see every day as the Sabbath.\u00a0 And I\u00a0 understand why Jesus healed so stubbornly<\/a> on the Sabbath: to demonstrate beyond the shadow of any doubt that it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath<\/em>,[9]<\/sup><\/a> including by the way serving my employer as a slave of Christ.[10]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But love neither despises<\/a> nor judges<\/a> us\u2014the Catholic, the Seventh Day Adventist or me\u2014for our differing convictions concerning holy days.<\/p>\n

The one who observes<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) the day does<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6, another form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9) it for the Lord<\/em>, Paul continued.\u00a0 The one who eats, eats for the Lord because he gives thanks to God, and the one who abstains from eating abstains for the Lord, and he gives thanks to God. \u00a0For none of us lives for himself and none dies for himself. \u00a0If we live, we live for the Lord; if we die, we die for the Lord. \u00a0Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord\u2019s<\/em>.[11]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Then Paul added a somewhat curious aside about Jesus\u2019 rule (\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 For this reason Christ died and returned to life, so that he may be the Lord<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u1fc3) of both the dead and the living<\/em>.[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

My religion has taught me to add \u201cif I allow it\u201d to an assertion such as this.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned\u00a0to assert my will over the lordship of Jesus.\u00a0 But I notice now that isn\u2019t in the text. \u00a0And certainly the assertion of my authority over his was never my elders\u2019 intent but an unintended consequence of what I now see as a defensive posture: If I refuse or fail to believe sufficiently in Jesus in this lifetime and spend eternity in hell it was not that Christ\u2019s death and life failed to make Him Lord of both the dead and the living<\/em>, but that I didn\u2019t allow his Lordship to be efficacious in my earthly lifetime. \u00a0It is a brilliant maneuver.\u00a0 I\u2019m not convinced it\u2019s true, so I\u2019ll let Paul speak for himself once again: For this reason Christ died and returned to life, so that he may be the Lord<\/em> of both the dead and the living<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But you who eat vegetables only<\/em>, Paul continued, why do you judge<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) your brother or sister?\u00a0 And you who eat everything \u2013 why do you despise<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2, a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) your brother or sister?\u00a0 For we will all stand before the judgment seat<\/em> (\u03b2\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9, a form of \u03b2\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) of God. \u00a0For it is written,<\/em> \u201cAs I live<\/em><\/strong>, says the Lord<\/strong>, every knee will bow to me<\/strong>, and every tongue will give praise to God<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure about translating \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 (a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) will give praise<\/em> here, no matter how hopeful it sounds.<\/p>\n

Judas agreed<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03c9\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) and began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus<\/em>.[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul wrote the Philippians, that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow \u2013 in heaven and on earth and under the earth \u2013 and every tongue confess<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father<\/em>.[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As it is written<\/em>, Paul quoted Psalm 18:49, \u201cBecause of this I will confess <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) you among the Gentiles<\/em><\/strong>, and I will sing praises <\/strong><\/em>(\u03c8\u03b1\u03bb\u1ff6, a form of \u03c8\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) to your name<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So confess<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) your sins to one another<\/em>,[17]<\/sup><\/a> James wrote.\u00a0 People from Jerusalem<\/em>\u2026confessed <\/em>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) their sins<\/em>[18]<\/sup><\/a> as they were baptized.\u00a0 And in Ephesus, Many of those who had believed came forward, confessing<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) and making their deeds known<\/em>.[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul\u2019s point here was, Therefore, each of us will give an account<\/em> (\u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) of himself to God<\/a><\/em>.[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Of course, if every tongue confesses, what will the outcome be?\u00a0 To be fair and complete, Jesus said, I praise<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to little children<\/em>.[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 On that same occasion Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, \u201cI praise<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9) you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to little children. \u00a0Yes, Father, for this was your gracious will.\u201d<\/em>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Perhaps this \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9, agreement with God, confession to God, is a form of praise after all.<\/p>\n

Therefore we must not pass judgment on one another<\/em>,[23]<\/sup><\/a> Paul concluded, \u039c\u03b7\u03ba\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9 \u03bf\u1f56\u03bd \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1f75\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd (literally, \u201cno longer therefore one another judge\u201d or \u201ctherefore we no longer judge one another\u201d).\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand why the NET translators turned this simple declarative statement into a rule, beyond the social construction<\/a> of our shared religious reality. \u00a0Most translations adopted some form of let us stop<\/a><\/em> here. Though I<\/em> remain the locus of control<\/a> in both translations, one might argue that in let us stop I<\/em> have repented and am heading in the right direction, not-doing<\/em> as opposed to doing<\/em>. \u00a0But neither translation conveys being<\/em> the love with which Christ’s Spirit fills us.<\/p>\n

Before I<\/em>\u00a0was focused on the fruit of the Spirit I<\/em> was like a fat ugly woman–or an old poor powerless man for that matter–priding myself in my celibacy. \u00a0But seeing righteousness as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control has put me in direct conflict with how sinful the sin in my flesh actually is.\u00a0 It is utterly opposed to love or joy or peace or patience or kindness or goodness or faithfulness or gentleness or any and every form of control. \u00a0This conflict, mostly losing it, has taught me to stop trusting in myself\u00a0but in God who raises the dead<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

We know that our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b7\u03ba\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>) be enslaved to sin<\/em>.[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is the same word as \u039c\u03b7\u03ba\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9 in \u201ctherefore we no longer judge one another\u201d above.\u00a0 And <\/em>[Jesus] died for all so that those who live should no longer<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b7\u03ba\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9) live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised<\/em>.[25]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So we are no longer<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b7\u03ba\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9) to be children, tossed back and forth by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching by the trickery of people who craftily carry out their deceitful schemes.\u00a0 But practicing the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head. \u00a0From him the whole body grows, fitted and held together through every supporting ligament. \u00a0As each one does its part, the body grows in love.\u00a0 So I say this, and insist in the Lord, that you no longer <\/em>(\u03bc\u03b7\u03ba\u1f73\u03c4\u03b9) live as the Gentiles<\/a> do, in the futility of their thinking<\/em>.[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

In other words, this \u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd (another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9; translated pass judgment<\/a><\/em>) is from the old human.\u00a0 We judge no longer if we are no longer the old human, if we are led by Spirit, but rather determine<\/em> (\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) never to place an obstacle or a trap before a brother or sister<\/em>, Paul continued. \u00a0I know<\/em> (\u03bf\u1f36\u03b4\u03b1, a form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>) and am convinced<\/em> (\u03c0\u1f73\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) in the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean<\/em> (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) in itself<\/em>,[27]<\/sup><\/a> the former Pharisee agreed and confessed with (and so praised?) Jesus (Mark 7:1-8 NET).<\/p>\n

Now the Pharisees and some of the experts in the law who came from Jerusalem gathered around him. \u00a0And they saw that some of Jesus\u2019 disciples ate their bread with unclean (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03b1\u1fd6\u03c2, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em> hands, that is, unwashed (\u1f00\u03bd\u1f77\u03c0\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2, a form of \u1f04\u03bd\u03b9\u03c0\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing, holding fast to the tradition of the elders. \u00a0And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. \u00a0They hold fast to many other traditions: the washing of cups, pots, kettles, and dining couches.) \u00a0The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked him, \u201cWhy do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with unwashed (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03b1\u1fd6\u03c2, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em> hands?\u201d \u00a0He said to them, \u201cIsaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: \u2018This people honors me with their lips,<\/em><\/strong> but their heart<\/em><\/strong> is far from me<\/strong>. <\/em>\u00a0They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrine the commandments of men<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em>\u2019 \u00a0Having no regard for the command of God, you hold fast to human tradition.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Born the son of a scrubby dutch<\/a> mother with an obsessive personality of my own, I have a serious hand-washing fetish.\u00a0 It has become apparent that applying the sterile conditions of the operating room to all of life is detrimental to human health.\u00a0 At the Institute for Functional Medicine<\/a> conferences I record I\u2019m learning that our overly cleanly habits may be part of the cause of our maladaptive immune systems.\u00a0 Children need dirt as much as mother\u2019s milk to jump-start their immune<\/a> and digestive<\/a> systems. \u00a0Jesus said (Mark 7:14, 15 NET):<\/p>\n

Listen to me, everyone, and understand. \u00a0There is nothing outside of a person that can defile (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> him by going into him. \u00a0Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9)<\/em> him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus\u2019 disciples were as surprised by this as we may be, so he explained (Mark 7:18-23 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you so foolish? \u00a0Don\u2019t you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9)<\/em> him? \u00a0For it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then goes out into the sewer.\u201d \u00a0(This means all foods are clean.) \u00a0He said, \u201cWhat comes out of a person defiles (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fd6, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9)<\/em> him. \u00a0For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, evil (\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u1f77\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, deceit, debauchery, envy (\u1f40\u03c6\u03b8\u03b1\u03bb\u03bc\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, slander, pride, and folly. \u00a0All these evils come from within and defile (\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fd6, another form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc\u03c9)<\/em> a person.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

By the way, another tidbit I\u2019ve gleaned from IFM conferences is that inflammation caused by stress impairs\u00a0the healthy functioning of all our biological systems.\u00a0 I imagine the stress of all these evils <\/em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u1f70, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>, “hurtful, full of labours, annoyances, hardships”) and know firsthand the stress of attempting to overcome them in my own strength rather than receiving the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness \u2013 a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/em>, the fruit of his Spirit.\u00a0 I\u2019ll pick this up again later.<\/p>\n
