It means messenger<\/em> and was translated messenger<\/em> when the translators were reasonably sure the messenger was a human being (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd – Luke 7:24<\/a>; \u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd – Matthew 11:10<\/a>, Mark 1:2<\/a>, Luke 7:27<\/a>; \u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 – Luke 9:52<\/a>).\u00a0 Paul euphemistically called a thorn in the flesh<\/em>\u2026a messenger<\/em> (\u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2 \u2013 2 Corinthians 12:7<\/a>) of Satan<\/em>.<\/p>\n

To this list I would add: 1) Before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd \u2013 1 Timothy 5:21<\/a>) because of its association with the word translated elect <\/em>(\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>); 2) seen by angels<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2 \u2013 1 Timothy 3:16<\/a> because human messengers proclaimed <\/em>[Jesus] among Gentiles<\/em>; 3) you welcomed me as though I were an angel of God<\/em> (\u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd \u2013 Galatians 4:14<\/a>) because Paul referred to himself, a human being, as a messenger of God; and 4) I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you<\/em> (\u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd \u2013 Revelation 22:16<\/a>) because the word translated you <\/em>(\u1f51\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>) is plural \u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd meant John as opposed to the angel who spoke<\/a> to John.<\/p>\n

There are seven more occurrences of forms of \u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2 that seem equivocal to me.\u00a0 Three of them are further confounded by two occurrences in Stephen\u2019s defense (Acts 7:35, 38 NET):<\/p>\n

This same Moses they had rejected, saying, \u2018Who made you a ruler and judge?<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 \u00a0God sent as both ruler and deliverer through the hand of the angel (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5)<\/em> who appeared to him in the bush.<\/p>\n

This is the man who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5)<\/em> who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors, and he received living oracles to give to you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The angel<\/em> (Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2) of the Lord <\/em>(ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) appeared to <\/em>[Moses] in a flame of fire from within a bush<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When the Lord<\/em> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) saw that he had turned aside to look, God<\/em> (\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/a><\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd) called to him from within the bush and said<\/em>\u2026[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u201cI am the God<\/em> (\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9) of your father, the God<\/em> (\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9) of Abraham, the God <\/em>(\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9) of Isaac, and the God<\/em> (\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9) of Jacob.\u201d \u00a0Then Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God <\/em>(\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>).[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u201cGo and bring together the elders of Israel and tell them, \u2018The Lord<\/em> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4), the God (\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9) of your fathers, appeared to me<\/em>\u2026\u201d[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

God <\/em>(\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd) spoke all these words: \u201cI, the Lord<\/em> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4), am your God<\/em> (\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05da), who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery\u201d<\/em> [Table<\/a>].[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u201cMoses alone may come near the Lord <\/em>(ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4), but the others must not come near, nor may the people go up with him.\u201d<\/em>[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The Lord<\/em> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) spoke to Moses: \u201cGo quickly, descend, because your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have acted corruptly <\/em>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them \u2013 they have made for themselves a molten calf and have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and said, \u2018These are your gods <\/em>(\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05da), O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt\u2019\u201d <\/em>[Table<\/a>].[9]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Clearly, the messenger of ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> in the burning bush and on Mount Sinai was ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> Himself, though first century Jews may have been reluctant to acknowledge it.[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So when Stephen said\u2014You received the law by decrees given by angels<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd), but you did not obey it<\/em>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014was it a pious fiction for Jewish sensibilities or a prophetic revelation?\u00a0 What about when the Holy Spirit included Stephen\u2019s statement in the New Testament?\u00a0 Why then was the law given?<\/em> Paul asked rhetorically.\u00a0 It was added because of transgressions, until the arrival of the descendant to whom the promise had been made. \u00a0It was administered<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) through angels<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd) by an intermediary<\/em>.[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For if the message spoken through angels<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd) proved to be so firm that every violation or disobedience received its just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? \u00a0It was first communicated through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him, while God confirmed their witness with signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will<\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Are these human messengers\u2014prophets and priests\u2014oblique references to ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> Himself or beings of another order of creation\u2014angels<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2)![14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 All who were sitting in the council\u00a0looked intently at Stephen and saw his face was like the face of an angel<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5).[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man. \u00a0Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for man. \u00a0For this reason a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2).[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Do not neglect hospitality, because through it some have entertained angels <\/em>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2) without knowing it<\/em>.[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Though I categorize these as equivocal I\u2019m certainly leaning toward a higher order of being.\u00a0 There are seven more occurrences I would have listed as equivocal and probably would have considered them more likely to be human until I began this study.<\/p>\n

But I have a few things against you<\/em>,[18]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus told John to write to the angel of the church in Pergamum<\/em>.[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0The Greek word translated you <\/em>is \u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6 (a form of \u03c3\u03cd<\/a>), the second person singular as is the verb translated have<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2, a form of \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) in the next sentence: You have some people there who follow the teaching of Balaam, who instructed Balak to put a stumbling block before the people of Israel so they would eat <\/em>(\u03c6\u03b1\u03b3\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, a form of \u03c6\u03ac\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) food sacrificed to idols <\/em>(\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u1f79\u03b8\u03c5\u03c4\u03b1, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u03cc\u03b8\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) and commit sexual immorality<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jesus continued with his message to the angel of the church in Pergamum<\/em>: Therefore, repent<\/em>[21]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u1f79\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)!\u00a0 Once again the verb \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u1f79\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd is second person singular<\/a>. \u00a0If not, I will come against you<\/em> (\u03c3\u03bf\u03b9, another<\/a> form of \u03c3\u03cd) quickly and make war against those people with the sword of my mouth<\/em>.[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But I have this against you<\/em>,[23]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus told John to write to the angel of the church in Thyatira<\/em>.[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Greek word translated you <\/em>is \u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6 (a form of \u03c3\u03cd), the second person singular as is the verb translated tolerate <\/em>(\u1f00\u03c6\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2, a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) in the next sentence: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and by her teaching deceives my servants to commit sexual immorality<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9) and to eat<\/em> (\u03c6\u03b1\u03b3\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, a form of \u03c6\u03ac\u03b3\u03c9) food sacrificed to idols<\/em> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u1f79\u03b8\u03c5\u03c4\u03b1, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u03cc\u03b8\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd).[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The criticism was directed at the angels<\/em>; the threat to make war against those who followed the teaching of Balaam with his words, the censure of illness toward those who committed adultery with Jezebel, and death to those who followed her teaching: Look!\u00a0 I am throwing her onto a bed of violent illness, and those who commit adultery<\/em> (\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03bc\u03bf\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) with her into terrible suffering, unless they repent of her deeds. \u00a0Furthermore, I will strike her followers with a deadly disease, and then all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts.<\/em>[26]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And this, after He had given her time to repent, but she <\/em>[was] not willing to repent of her sexual immorality <\/em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I will repay <\/em>(\u03b4\u1f7d\u03c3\u03c9, a form of \u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) each one of you <\/em>(\u1f51\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>) what your <\/em>(\u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>) deeds deserve<\/em>.[28]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here the words translated you<\/a> <\/em>and your <\/a><\/em> are plural.\u00a0 But to the rest of you<\/em> (\u1f51\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd) in Thyatira, all who do not hold to this teaching (who have not learned the so-called \u201cdeep secrets of Satan\u201d), to you I say: I do not put any additional burden on you<\/em> (\u1f51\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>; plural<\/a>). \u00a0However, hold on to what you have until I come.<\/em>[29]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Do not accept an accusation against an elder<\/em>, Paul wrote Timothy, unless it can be confirmed<\/em> by two or three witnesses<\/em>. \u00a0Those guilty of sin must be rebuked before all, as a warning to the rest<\/em>.[30]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Not rebuking Jezebel publicly (before other elders) seems like the most obvious[31]<\/sup><\/a> failure if Jesus criticized an authoritarian human messenger for tolerating Jezebel (literally, \u201cleft\u201d her to do what she did: Matthew 13:36<\/a>; Matthew 26:44<\/a>; Mark 8:13<\/a>; Mark 13:34<\/a>).\u00a0 But since Jesus\u2019 prescription\u2014I am throwing her onto a bed of violent illness<\/em>\u2014is somewhat beyond the purview of a human messenger, I consider an angelic being here and make the connection to Jesus\u2019 parable (Matthew 13:24-30 NET).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe kingdom of heaven is like a person who sowed good seed in his field. \u00a0But while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. \u00a0When the plants sprouted and bore grain, then the weeds also appeared. \u00a0So the slaves (\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of the owner came and said to him, \u2018Sir, didn\u2019t you sow good seed in your field? \u00a0Then where did the weeds come from?\u2019 \u00a0He said, \u2018An enemy has done this.\u2019 \u00a0So the slaves replied,[32]<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u2018Do you want us to go and gather<\/a> them?\u2019 [Table<\/a>]<\/em>\u00a0 But he said, \u2018No, since in gathering the weeds you may uproot the wheat with them. \u00a0Let both grow together until the harvest. \u00a0At harvest time I will tell the reapers, \u201cFirst collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned, but then gather the wheat into my barn.\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus explained the parable to his disciples (Matthew 13:37-39 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cThe one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. \u00a0The field is the world and the good seed are the people of the kingdom. \u00a0The weeds are the people of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. \u00a0The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels (\u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9)<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here the \u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9 are distinguished from the human \u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9 as higher beings capable of making distinctions that human messengers could not, and should not, make\u2014No, since in gathering the weeds you may uproot the wheat with them<\/em>.\u00a0 The Son of Man will send his angels<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2), and they will gather from his kingdom everything that causes sin as well as all lawbreakers<\/em>.[33]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This sounds precisely like the function Jesus criticized the angel<\/em> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u1ff3) of the church in Thyatira<\/em> for not fulfilling sooner regarding Jezebel and her followers.\u00a0 It prompts me to reconsider whether all seven of these angels<\/em> are higher order beings\u2014angels.<\/p>\n
