I\u2019ll continue to contrast \u201cPaul\u2019s Regime\u201d to \u201cJesus\u2019 Regime.\u201d\u00a0 Paul finally turned his attention to the man who had his father\u2019s wife as follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

For even though I am absent<\/a> physically, I am present in spirit.\u00a0 And I have already judged (\u03ba\u1f73\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) the one who did this, just as though I were present.\u00a0 When you (\u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>) gather together in the name of our Lord Jesus<\/a>, and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of our Lord Jesus<\/a>, turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, I will strike [Jezebel\u2019s] followers with a deadly disease, and then all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts.\u00a0 I will repay each one of you what your deeds deserve.<\/p>\n

The English translation of 1 Corinthians 5:3 might actually be clearer than the Greek.\u00a0 I think Paul may have written something like, “I have already decided[1]<\/sup><\/a> as follows about what was done.” \u00a0Considering what<\/em> he had already decided the translators cut through all that: I have already judged the one who did this<\/em>\u2026\u00a0 Paul urged the believers in Corinth to turn this man over to Satan<\/em>. [Addendum: January 25, 2024, see Addendum<\/a>.]<\/p>\n

The Greek word translated turn over<\/em> is \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9 (a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>).\u00a0 Paul also handed <\/em>Hymenaeus and Alexander over <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b1, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I assume that to turn <\/em>or hand <\/em>one over to Satan<\/em> was the antithesis of commending one to the grace of God<\/em>.<\/p>\n

After their first missionary journey Paul and Barnabas sailed back to Antioch, where they had been commended<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03b4\u03bf\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) to the grace of God for the work they had now completed<\/em>.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Later, Paul chose Silas and set out, commended<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03bf\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) to the grace of the Lord<\/a> by the brothers and sisters<\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a> for his second missionary journey after parting company with Barnabas over John Mark<\/a>.\u00a0 So I assume that both, being commended to the grace of God and being turned, or handed, over to Satan, were matters of prayer.\u00a0 We\u2019re not told how God responded to this prayer vis-\u00e0-vis the man who had his father\u2019s wife.\u00a0 What is recorded in Paul\u2019s letters are the changes<\/a> in his own perspective.<\/p>\n

Here in 1 Corinthians Paul turned a man who committed \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1<\/a>, one of the works of the flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f79\u03c2, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>), over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f79\u03c2, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be): Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1), impurity, depravity, idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things. \u00a0I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice<\/em> (\u03c0\u03c1\u1f71\u03c3\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) such things will not inherit the kingdom of God!<\/em>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But is the destruction <\/em>(\u1f44\u03bb\u03b5\u03b8\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u1f44\u03bb\u03b5\u03b8\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) of the flesh<\/em> a work of Satan (Romans 7:4-6 NET)?<\/p>\n

So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you could be joined to another, to the one who was raised from the dead, to bear fruit to God. \u00a0For when we were in the flesh (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f77, another form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be)<\/em>, the sinful desires (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, aroused by the law, were active in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. \u00a0But now we have been released from the law, because we have died to what controlled us, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit and not under the old written code.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But I say, live by the Spirit<\/em>, Paul wrote the Galatians, and you will not carry out the desires<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) of the flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be). \u00a0For the flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u1f70\u03c1\u03be) has desires<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f79\u03c2, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be), for these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what you want. \u00a0But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law<\/em>.[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The one thing I can say with certainty about the man who had his father’s wife is that he was not led by the Holy Spirit at the moment he chose to take her. \u00a0His flesh had taken control.<\/p>\n

Brothers and sisters, if a person is discovered in some sin <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>),[7]<\/sup><\/a> you who are spiritual restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness<\/a><\/em>.[8]<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>The spiritual <\/em>(\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u1f76, a form of \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) are those who live <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) by the Spirit<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9, a form of \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1).\u00a0 Paul\u2019s teaching in his letters to the Romans and Galatians doesn\u2019t explain, expound or even hint at any reliance on Satan for blessing\u2014for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord<\/em>\u2014or cursing\u2014to be taught not to blaspheme<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the movie Miracles From Heaven<\/a> Jennifer Garner<\/a> completed her stunning transformation from Elektra<\/a> through adoptive-mother-to-be Vanessa in Juno<\/a> to Christy the Christian mother of three girls.\u00a0 There are spoilers here, and though Christy is based on an actual person Christy Beam<\/a>,\u00a0I am writing about a character in a film.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one here is going to hell,\u201d Christy says to her three daughters.\u00a0 \u201cUnless you girls get your clothes dirty.\u00a0 How many times have I told you not to play outside in your Sunday school dresses?\u201d\u00a0 Then she yells to her husband in the field, \u201cHey Kevin, I have to tell you not to play outside before church, too?\u201d<\/p>\n

With these few deft lines we understand that Christy has succumbed to the primary occupational hazard of motherhood: She doesn\u2019t merely inhabit a world of rules and religion, she is its architect and chief executive.\u00a0 When her middle daughter Anna is diagnosed with an incurable disease Christy is utterly lost.\u00a0 Concerned about the cost of traveling every six weeks from Texas to a specialist in Boston she argues with Kevin (Martin Henderson<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Christy:<\/strong> I need to know how we\u2019re going to do it.<\/em><\/p>\n

Kevin:<\/strong> Well, We\u2019ll figure it out.<\/em><\/p>\n

Christy:<\/strong> No, No.\u00a0 You can\u2019t say that.\u00a0 I hate when you say that!<\/em><\/p>\n

Kevin:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m sorry, babe, but I don\u2019t have any answers right now.<\/em><\/p>\n

Christy:<\/strong> I need an answer!…I cannot operate under the assumption that it\u2019s all just gonna be okay!<\/em><\/p>\n

Kevin:<\/strong> It\u2019s called <\/em>faith, Christy.<\/em><\/p>\n

Christy:<\/strong> I don\u2019t have faith about anything.\u00a0 I can\u2019t even pray, Kevin.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.<\/em><\/p>\n

Kevin:<\/strong> No.\u00a0 I hear you.\u00a0 But I can\u2019t help you with your faith.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If I hadn\u2019t known someone exactly like him, Kevin would have seemed like the least believable character in the film.\u00a0 The man I knew grew up in the faith. \u00a0Being led by the Spirit was as natural to him as breathing.\u00a0 The faith that is an aspect of the fruit of the Spirit seemed like his own.\u00a0 And he was just as tone deaf and incapable of explaining the Holy Spirit\u2019s faith<\/a> to someone for whom such faith was not natural as Kevin.\u00a0 He was also just as persistent and consistent an example of that faith as Kevin.\u00a0 Only his wife knew him intimately enough to perceive any wavering or inconsistency.<\/p>\n

Christy talks with Pastor Scott (John Carroll Lynch<\/a>):<\/p>\n

Christy:<\/strong> Well, you could tell me why a loving God would let Annabel suffer the way she has.<\/em><\/p>\n

Pastor Scott:<\/strong> I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have an answer for that.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While it was dramatically necessary for Christy to discover her own answer, and Pastor Scott probably didn\u2019t know specifics in her particular case, I want to explore a similar situation recorded in the New Testament.<\/p>\n

Lord, if you had been here<\/em>, Lazarus\u2019 sister Martha said to Jesus, my brother would not have died. \u00a0But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will grant you<\/em>.[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This sickness will not lead to death<\/em>, Jesus had said when he heard that Lazarus was sick, but to God\u2019s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it<\/em>.[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Lazarus has died<\/em>, He told his disciples, and I am glad for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe<\/em>.[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus put Martha and Mary (not to mention Lazarus), whom he loved<\/a> <\/em>(\u1f20\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b1, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>), through sickness and death so that<\/em> when Jesus raised Lazarus<\/a> from the dead his disciples may believe<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Though raising Lazarus from the dead was effective enough among the \u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1f77\u03c9\u03bd that the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too, for on account of him many of the Jewish people <\/em>(\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1f77\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) from Jerusalem were going away and believing in Jesus<\/em>,[12]<\/sup><\/a> it failed in its primary purpose for Jesus\u2019 disciples.\u00a0 Not only did they not wait expectantly for three days for Jesus to rise from the dead<\/a>, they didn\u2019t even believe it when someone told them<\/a> it had happened.<\/p>\n

Who were these infidels?<\/p>\n

They were handpicked by Jesus Himself.\u00a0 They were purified, purged<\/a> of the evil among them in classic Old Testament fashion: Judas killed himself<\/a> after he confessed his \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> (another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9).\u00a0 But before the Holy Spirit was given on Pentecost each remained a natural human (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03b9\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2…\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2):<\/p>\n

Now we\u00a0have received, not the spirit of\u00a0the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,\u00a0which things we also speak,\u00a0not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit<\/a>,\u00a0combining spiritual\u00a0thoughts\u00a0with spiritual\u00a0words.\u00a0 But\u00a0a\u00a0natural (\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03b9\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2, a form of \u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> man\u00a0does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are\u00a0foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually\u00a0appraised.[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Though Jesus\u2019 display of power over death failed to persuade natural humans to faith and hope it continued to eloquently expound the theme He thought was sufficiently demonstrated<\/a> in the Old Testament writings: You must all be born from above<\/em>.[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 To be born from above<\/em> entails, includes and ultimately means to be led by the Holy Spirit: For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God<\/em>.[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

In Miracles from Heaven Anna (Kylie Rogers<\/a>), writhing in pain, says to her mother Christy, \u201cDon\u2019t you understand that it never stops hurting.\u00a0 It never stops\u2026I want to die\u2026I want to go to heaven where there\u2019s no pain\u2026I\u2019m sorry, Mommy.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to make you sad.\u00a0 I just want it to be over.\u201d<\/p>\n

This might have been the turning point of the story. \u00a0If my daughter complained this way to me I would fall on my face confessing to anything and everything.\u00a0 But Anna\u2019s doctor persuaded Christy that her daughter\u2019s childlike faith was depression caused by prolonged illness.<\/p>\n

When Anna fell and was trapped inside a rotten tree, however, Christy knelt and prayed the Lord\u2019s prayer (Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV<\/a>), not as a sing-song chant but, as a heartfelt expression of faith, not my will but yours be done<\/em>.[16]<\/sup><\/a> Indeed we felt as if the sentence of death had been passed against us<\/em>, Paul wrote the Corinthians in a later letter, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead<\/em>.[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

No viewer of the film is forced to believe that God healed Anna when Christy learned to rely on the faith (\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) of the Holy Spirit<\/a>. \u00a0 She clearly spells out an alternative to Anna\u2019s specialist that is wholly compatible with progressive[18]<\/sup><\/a> evolution: \u201cSo you\u2019re telling me that when this baby girl fell 30 feet, she hit her head just right and it didn\u2019t kill her and it didn\u2019t paralyze her and instead it healed her?\u201d\u00a0 If this explanation rings hollow, one may be hearing from the Spirit of God because a\u00a0natural<\/em> [human]\u00a0does not accept the things of the Spirit of God<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Jesus’ Regime by contrast did not incite his followers to turn to Satan for remediation: Furthermore, I will strike her followers<\/em>[19]<\/sup><\/a> with a deadly disease, and then all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts.\u00a0 I will repay each one of you what your deeds deserve<\/em>.\u00a0 Eventually Paul perceived the practical sense of this, too (Romans 12:17-21 NET):<\/p>\n

Do not repay anyone evil for evil; consider what is good before all people. \u00a0If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all people. \u00a0Do not avenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God\u2019s wrath, for it is written, \u201cVengeance is mine<\/em><\/strong>, I will repay<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d says the Lord. \u00a0Rather<\/a>, if your enemy is hungry<\/em><\/strong>, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing this you will be heaping burning coals on his head <\/strong>[Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Preferring Jesus’ Regime in Revelation 2:18-29<\/a> to Paul’s Regime in 1 Corinthians 5<\/a>[20]<\/sup><\/a> I have been brought full circle.\u00a0 This world governed by God\u2019s wrath is the world I thought I lived in before I became an atheist<\/a>.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t expect to return here again.\u00a0 But this time I am led by the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 This time I believe that \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1 has much more to do with the pagan worship practices of Exodus 32<\/a> and Numbers 25<\/a> than it does with two young people marrying, that is to say having sex, before receiving Church, State or even parental sanction. \u00a0This time I expect to weather my ordeal without serious incident.<\/p>\n

Studying the various forms of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9 has deeply colored my understanding of these things.\u00a0 The table I constructed during that study is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
