right;\">1 Corinthians 6:12b (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"213\">For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, regarding the affliction that happened <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote33sym\">to us<\/a> in the province of Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of living. \u00a0Indeed we felt as if the sentence of death had been passed against us, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead. \u00a0He delivered us from so great a risk of death, and he will deliver us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">2 Corinthians 1:8-10a (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"213\">For we know that the law is spiritual \u2013 but I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin. \u00a0For I don\u2019t understand what I am doing.\u00a0 For I do not do what I want \u2013 instead, I do what I hate. \u00a0But if I do what I don\u2019t want, I agree that the law is good. \u00a0But now it is no longer me doing it, but sin that lives in me. \u00a0For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh.\u00a0 For I want to do the good, but I cannot do it. \u00a0For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want! \u00a0Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but sin that lives in me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Romans 7:14-20 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I\u2019ve listed these passages as \u201cBefore\u2026\u201d and \u201cAfter the Affliction\u201d because <em>Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I actually think that all of 1 Corinthians may have been written from somewhere deep within that affliction.\u00a0 Paul\u2019s pride\u2014<em>I will not be controlled by anything<\/em>\u2014was relative\u2014<em>I am<\/em>\u2026<em>sold into slavery to sin<\/em>.\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe it was pride in his own strength.\u00a0 The sense of invincibility that comes with the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Holy Spirit\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03b3\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\">\u1f10\u03b3\u03ba\u03c1\u1f71\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a> is all too familiar (and I don\u2019t do miracles or see visions or write Scripture).\u00a0 The Greek word translated <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+6:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">controlled<\/a> <\/em> is \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 When Jesus\u2019 disciples debated <em>which of them was to be regarded as the greatest<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> (\u03bc\u03b5\u1f77\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bc\u03ad\u03b3\u03b1\u03c2\">\u03bc\u03ad\u03b3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>), He said (Luke 22:25-27 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The kings of the Gentiles lord it over <em>(\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9\">\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> them, and those in authority over <em>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u1f71\u03b6\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em> them are called \u2018benefactors.\u2019 \u00a0Not so with you; instead the one who is greatest <em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u1f77\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03b3\u03b1\u03c2)<\/em> among you must become like the youngest, and the leader <em>(\u1f21\u03b3\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f21\u03b3\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u1f21\u03b3\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> like the one who serves <em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0For who is greater <em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u1f77\u03b6\u03c9\u03bd, a form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03b3\u03b1\u03c2)<\/em>, the one who is seated at the table, or the one who serves <em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>? \u00a0Is it not the one who is seated at the table? \u00a0But I am among you as one who serves <em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_authority\"><\/a>The other occurrences of forms of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 refer to control over a husband\u2019s or wife\u2019s body <em>because of<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+7:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) in Corinth.\u00a0 <em>It is not the wife who has the rights<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) <em>to her own body, but the husband.\u00a0 In the same way, it is not the husband who has the rights <\/em>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) <em>to his own body, but the wife<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The NKJV reads: <em>The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband\u00a0does. \u00a0And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife\u00a0does<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The negation <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bf\u1f50\">\u03bf\u1f50\u03ba<\/a> \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9 is absolute.\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe such slavery is to be exercised apart from mutual consent on a moment by moment basis. \u00a0To force my wife to have sex with me by the strength of my arm or a \u201claw of Paul\u201d is not <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+13:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">love<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek word translated <em>sold into slavery<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+7:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03c1\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03c1\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 <em>Because he was not able to repay it<\/em>, Jesus told a parable about the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Matthew+18:23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kingdom of heaven<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote8sym\">the<\/a> lord ordered him to be sold<\/em> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03c1\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9), <em>along with his wife, children, and whatever he <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote9sym\">possessed<\/a>, and repayment to be made<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Matthew+18:26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slave<\/a> <\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2\">\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) asked his lord for mercy.\u00a0 <em>The lord had compassion on that slave<\/em> (\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5, another form of \u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2) <em>and released him, and forgave him the debt<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> until that <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Matthew+18:32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slave<\/a> <\/em>would not <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Matthew+18:33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forgive<\/a> a fellow slave.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve referred to Romans 7 often (in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/18\/romans-part-28\/\">Romans, Part 28<\/a> <\/em>most fully) as a description of a \u201chouse divided, one born of the flesh and of the Spirit\u201d: 1) <em>our old man<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u1f78\u03c2 \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2; literally, \u201cour old human\u201d) <em>was crucified with<\/em> [Jesus] <em>so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved <\/em>(\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9\">\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>to sin<\/em>;<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> and 2) <em>the new man<\/em> (\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u1f78\u03bd \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd; literally, \u201cthe new human\u201d) <em>who has been created in God\u2019s image \u2013 in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The one thing I would correct here is: \u201cI believe, however, that through faith I, the new man or woman, lay claim to more and more of my mind and my members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I want to correct what I was apparently thinking more than what I actually wrote.\u00a0 I assumed without grounds that the maturity of the new human through faith led to more independence.\u00a0 I\u2019ve tripped over this assumption often without ever acknowledging it.\u00a0 The sentence of death has been passed against us who believe: <em>Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? \u00a0Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Identifying with the new me cannot mean simply transferring allegiance from the old me to the new me <em>who has been created in God\u2019s image<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The new me is spirit, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+3:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">born of the Spirit<\/a>; it is no longer I who <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+2:20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">live<\/a>, but Christ lives in me.\u00a0 Maturity of the new human leads to more and more dependence upon his Holy Spirit.\u00a0 As 1 Corinthians 13 is a practical description of love, Romans 7:14-20 is a practical description of humbling oneself before God because it accurately describes the human condition vis-\u00e0-vis God the Father.\u00a0 <em>We tear down arguments and every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, <\/em>Paul wrote believers in Corinth, <em>and we take every thought captive to make it obey<\/em> (\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1f74\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>) <em>Christ<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The verb <em>obey <\/em>would have been a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>, \u201cto\u00a0<em>hear<\/em>\u00a0<em>under<\/em> (as a\u00a0<em>subordinate<\/em>), that is, to\u00a0<em>listen<\/em>\u00a0<em>attentively<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 The clause \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03b1\u1f30\u03c7\u03bc\u03b1\u03bb\u03c9\u03c4\u1f77\u03b6\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 \u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd \u03bd\u1f79\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1 \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1f74\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 reads \u201cand we lead away captive each thought into the attentive hearkening of Christ.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m not even depending on my attentive hearkening or obedience as a new human, but on Christ\u2019s attentive hearkening or obedience through his Spirit, <em>just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father<\/em>.\u00a0 With this in mind I\u2019ll continue to look at \u201cPaul\u2019s Regime\u201d and \u201cJesus\u2019 Regime<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote29sym\">In<\/a> no way did I mean the immoral people of this world, or the greedy <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote30sym\">and<\/a> swindlers and idolaters, since you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote31sym\">would<\/a> then have to go out of the world.\u00a0 But <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote31sym\">now<\/a> I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who calls himself a Christian who is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or verbally abusive, or a drunkard, or a swindler.\u00a0 Do not even eat with such a person.\u00a0 For what do <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote6sym\">I<\/a> have to do with judging those outside?\u00a0 Are you not to judge those inside?\u00a0 But God will judge those outside.\u00a0 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote7sym\">Remove<\/a><\/em> style=\"text-align: right;\">Revelation 2:26-29 (NET)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Here Paul gave a fragment of the letter that preceded 1 Corinthians: [Do] <em>not<\/em>\u2026<em>associate with sexually immoral people<\/em> (\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2\">\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).\u00a0 He didn\u2019t <em>mean the<\/em> \u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2 <em>of this world<\/em>, but didn\u2019t make that clear apparently.\u00a0 In other words, what was written in the prior letter was the teaching (<em>yeast<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+16:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 16:5-12<\/a>) of the Pharisees: <em>Now when the Pharisee who had invited <\/em>[Jesus]<em> saw this, he said to himself, \u201cIf this man were a prophet, he would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming to hear<\/em> [Jesus]. \u00a0<em>But the Pharisees and the experts in the law were complaining, \u201cThis man welcomes sinners and eats with them.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_unleavened\"><\/a>The teaching of the Pharisees also helps explain why Paul used <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03b6\u03cd\u03bc\u03b7\">\u03b6\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b7<\/a> in such a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/10\/07\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-3\/#_yeast\">peculiar<\/a> way, <em>the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+5:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yeast<\/a> <\/em>(\u03b6\u1f7b\u03bc\u1fc3) <em>of vice and evil<\/em>.\u00a0 For Jesus, <em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+13:33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kingdom of heaven<\/a> is like yeast <\/em>(\u03b6\u1f7b\u03bc\u1fc3), and, <em>the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Luke+13:20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kingdom of God<\/a><\/em>\u2026<em>is like yeast<\/em> (\u03b6\u1f7b\u03bc\u1fc3).\u00a0 He warned his disciples, <em>Be on your guard against the <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+16:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teaching<\/a>] (\u03b6\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b7\u03c2, another form of \u03b6\u03cd\u03bc\u03b7) <em>of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f51\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f79\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Israel was instructed to eat the Passover <em>dressed to travel, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand.\u00a0 You are to eat it in haste<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The meaning of unleavened bread, bread without yeast, in the Passover meal was that the swiftness of Israel\u2019s liberation from Egyptian captivity would not allow time for their bread to rise.\u00a0 It is stated clearly in Exodus 12:33, 34 (NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Egyptians were urging the people on, in order to send them out of the land quickly, for they were saying, \u201cWe are all dead!\u201d \u00a0So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, with their kneading troughs bound up in their clothing on their shoulders.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While it is understandable that after centuries of eating unleavened bread at a holy festival, \u201cIn later times, \u2018leaven\u2019 and \u2018corruption\u2019 were regarded as synonymous terms,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> it is also fairly clearly the thought of religious minds.\u00a0 It was not ignorance: \u201cDuring the festival of Ma\u1e93\u1e93ot [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishencyclopedia.com\/articles\/11933-passover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passover<\/a>] it was strictly forbidden to eat anything leavened\u2026The reason for this prohibition is given in Ex. xii. 34-39\u2026\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It was an active preference for the teaching of revered religious leaders or other human authorities, <em>the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+16:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees<\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Mark+8:15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Herod<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To believers in Galatia Paul wrote about the teaching of <em>the one who is confusing<\/em> (\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u1f71\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9\">\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>you<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> that Gentile believers in Galatia should be <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">circumcised<\/a>, and called it \u03b6\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b7: <em>A little yeast<\/em> (\u03b6\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b7) <em>makes the whole batch of dough rise!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Though he was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confident in the Lord<\/a><\/em> the Galatians would reject that teaching in favor of his own, the former Pharisee did not yet call his \u03b6\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b7.<\/p>\n<p><em>But <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#_ftn32\">now<\/a> I am writing to you<\/em>, Paul continued to believers in Corinth, <em>not to associate<\/em> <em>with anyone who calls himself a Christian<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2\">\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>) <em>who is sexually immoral<\/em> (\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2), <em>or greedy, or an idolater<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03c4\u03c1\u03b7\u03c2\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u03bf\u03bb\u1f71\u03c4\u03c1\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>), <em>or verbally abusive, or a drunkard, or a swindler.\u00a0 Do not even eat with such a person.<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Greek word translated <em>to associate with<\/em> is \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u1f77\u03b3\u03bd\u03c5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03af\u03b3\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03af\u03b3\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>).\u00a0 The same word was translated <em>do <\/em>[not] <em>associate closely<\/em> in a letter to believers in Thessalonica: <em>But if anyone does not obey our message through this letter, take note of him and do not associate closely<\/em> (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u1f77\u03b3\u03bd\u03c5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03af\u03b3\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9) <em>with him, so that he may be ashamed. \u00a0Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother <\/em>(\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u1f79\u03bd, another form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul used <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bc\u03ae\">\u03bc\u1f74<\/a> the qualified negation in both instances.<\/p>\n<p>The former sounds like excommunication while the latter sounds like some kind of in-house suspension.\u00a0 But I can\u2019t blame the translators.\u00a0 To the Corinthians Paul wrote, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote7sym\">Remove<\/a> the evil person from among you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 To the Thessalonians he wrote, <em>do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother<\/em>.\u00a0 To the Corinthians he wrote of \u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2 and \u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u03bf\u03bb\u1f71\u03c4\u03c1\u03b7\u03c2.\u00a0 Jesus had John <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Revelation+2:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">write<\/a> <em>to the angel of the church in Thyatira <\/em>about a woman who <em>by her teaching deceives my servants <\/em>(\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2, another form of \u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2) <em>to commit sexual immorality<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>and to eat food sacrificed to idols<\/em> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u1f79\u03b8\u03c5\u03c4\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u03cc\u03b8\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u03cc\u03b8\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>).<a <em>death<\/em>)\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 distinction between his deceived <em>servants<\/em>\u2014<em>terrible suffering<\/em> (\u03b8\u03bb\u1fd6\u03c8\u03b9\u03bd \u03bc\u03b5\u03b3\u1f71\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd)\u2014and Jezebel\u2019s <em>followers<\/em>\u2014<em>deadly disease<\/em> (\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u1f71\u03c4\u1ff3, <em>death<\/em>)\u2014was part of what caught my attention and encouraged me to compare and contrast Jesus\u2019 and Paul\u2019s regimes.\u00a0 Who but Jesus could make this judgment?\u00a0 Outwardly both groups were committing adultery <em>with <\/em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1fbf, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac<\/a>) her, possibly but not necessarily as her partner, inspired by her teaching, probably within a group she led.\u00a0 What I didn\u2019t fully appreciate until doing this study was how fluid and continuous these groups were over time.\u00a0 Individuals in either group may have repented and Jesus\u2019 deceived servants may have continued in Jezebel\u2019s teaching and become her followers.\u00a0 Paul\u2019s fear that false teaching might also function as yeast is not completely unfounded.\u00a0 The human preference for <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Exodus+20:19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">human teachers<\/a> as opposed to being led (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+16:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 16:12-16<\/a>) by the Holy Spirit is not something I
