in Athens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the Holy Spirit seemed eager to get him into Macedonia<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> I am eager to get Paul to Athens.\u00a0 So I\u2019m passing over the stories of Paul and Silas in Philippi, Thessalonica and Berea except to mention two things.\u00a0 1) Along the way Paul picked up a young disciple named Timothy (the son of a believing Jewish woman) and had him circumcised <em>because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> <em>was Greek<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And 2) it was Paul\u2019s message that inflamed so much Jewish religious resentment in Thessalonica and Berea<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> as opposed to lost profits among the Romans in Philippi,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> despite the similar tactics employed by both.<\/p>\n<p>Paul was alone in Athens, waiting for Silas and Timothy, <em>his spirit was greatly upset because he saw<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> <em>the city was full of idols. \u00a0So he was addressing the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles in the synagogue, and in the marketplace every day those who happened to be there<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Paul also met some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers who brought him before the Areopagus.<\/p>\n<p>I have no clue what this council was, a criminal court, the intellectual\/cultural equivalent of fashionistas, or something in between. \u00a0There is nothing to lead me to believe that Paul was under arrest or indictment.\u00a0 There is a sense of formality that feels like a guest lecturer before an august body of educators.\u00a0 But apart from the mention of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers, I found no historical mention of the Areopagus in any direct relationship to education.<\/p>\n<p>Neither can I tell how Paul felt about this council or his Gospel presentation there.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had a gut instinct for a while now that Paul\u2019s attitude was not as flippant as Luke\u2019s\u2014<em>All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there used to spend their time<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <em>in nothing else than telling or<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> <em>listening to something new<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>\u2014and that Paul felt that his presentation didn\u2019t go that well.\u00a0 But I get my gut instinct by reading backwards from 1 and 2 Corinthians rather than directly here in Acts.\u00a0 More on that later.<\/p>\n<p>For now I\u2019ve put Paul\u2019s address before the Areopagus in a table beside his Gospel presentation in Pisidian Antioch.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" Antioch<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in all respects. \u00a0For as I went around and observed closely your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: \u201cTo an unknown god.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0Therefore what you worship without knowing it, this<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> I proclaim to you.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Acts 17:22, 23 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">Men of Israel, and you Gentiles who fear God, listen:<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Acts 13:16 (NET)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Paul\u2019s introductory comments were much shorter in Antioch, where he was officially invited to address the synagogue as a <em>brother<\/em>: <em>After the reading from the law and the prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, \u201cBrothers, if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_ftn18\">any<\/a> message of exhortation for the people, speak it.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> In Athens in as brief a time as possible Paul needed to establish some rapport.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<p made the world and everything in it, who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by human hands, nor is he served (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qerapeuetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03cd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qerapeuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) by human<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/prosd.html#prosdeomenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b4\u03b5\u03cc\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/prosd.html#prosdeomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b4\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) anything, because he himself gives life and breath and<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> everything to everyone.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0From one man<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> he made every nation of the human race to inhabit the entire<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> earth, determining their set times and the fixed limits of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> and perhaps grope around for him and find him, though<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a> he is not far from each one of us. \u00a0For in him we live and move about and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, \u201cFor we too are his offspring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Acts 17:24-28 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">The God of this people <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote21sym\">Israel<\/a> chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay as foreigners in the country of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote22sym\">Egypt<\/a>, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_Table6\">Table<\/a>). \u00a0For a period of about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. \u00a0After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote23sym\">gave<\/a> his people their land as an inheritance (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>). \u00a0All this took about four hundred fifty years. \u00a0After this he gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. \u00a0Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years. \u00a0After removing him, God raised up <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote24sym\">David<\/a> their king (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_Table8\">Table<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Acts 13:17-22a (NET)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In Antioch Paul introduced God in terms of Israel\u2019s history.\u00a0 In Athens he did the same in terms of world history, even referencing some Greek poetry.\u00a0 Though it may not be apparent yet, I think it is worth mentioning that Paul\u2019s Athenian audience was at least willing to sit and listen to his account of God in history.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<p align=\"center\">Areopagus &#8211; Athens<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<p align=\"center\">Pisidian Antioch<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">So since we are God\u2019s offspring, we should not think the deity is like gold or silver or stone, an image made by human skill and imagination. \u00a0Therefore, although God has overlooked such times of ignorance, he now commands all<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a> people everywhere to repent, because<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a> he has set a day on which he is going to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom he designated, having provided proof to everyone by raising him from the dead.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Acts 17:29-31 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">He testified about him: \u201c<strong><em>I have found <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote24sym\">David<\/a><\/em><\/strong> the son of Jesse <strong><em>to be a man after my heart<\/em><\/strong>, who will accomplish everything I want him to do.\u201d\u00a0 From the descendants of this man God <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote25sym\">brought<\/a> to Israel a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote26sym\">Savior<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote27sym\">Jesus<\/a>, just as he promised.\u00a0 Before Jesus arrived, John had proclaimed a baptism for repentance to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote28sym\">all<\/a> the people of Israel.\u00a0 But while <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote29sym\">John<\/a> was completing his mission, he said repeatedly, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote30sym\">What<\/a> do you think <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote31sym\">I am<\/a>?\u00a0 I am not he.\u00a0 But look, one is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!\u2019\u00a0 Brothers, descendants of Abraham\u2019s family, and those Gentiles among you who fear God, the message of this salvation has been <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote32sym\">sent<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote33sym\">us<\/a>.\u00a0 For the people who live in Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him, and they fulfilled the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath by condemning him.\u00a0 Though they found no basis for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.\u00a0 When they had accomplished <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote34sym\">everything<\/a> that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and placed him in a tomb (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>).\u00a0 But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem. \u00a0These are <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote35sym\">now<\/a>\u00a0his witnesses to the people (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_Table10\">Table<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Acts 13:22b-31 (NET) <a Antioch, Paul pivoted to introduce Jesus.\u00a0 But Paul\u2019s address in Athens was cut short.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<p align=\"center\">Areopagus &#8211; Athens<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<p align=\"center\">Pisidian Antioch<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">Now when they heard about the resurrection from the dead, some began to scoff, but others said,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> \u201cWe will hear you again<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a> about this.\u201d \u00a0So<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a> Paul left the Areopagus. \u00a0But some people joined him and believed. \u00a0Among them were Dionysius, who was a member of the Areopagus, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Acts 17:32-34 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors, that this promise God has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm, \u201c<strong><em>You are my Son; today I have fathered you<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d \u00a0But regarding the fact that he has raised Jesus from the dead, never again to be in a state of decay, God has spoken in this way: \u201c<strong><em>I will give you the holy and trustworthy promises<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>made to David<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d \u00a0Therefore he also says in another psalm, \u201c<strong><em>You \u00a0 will not permit your Holy One to experience<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>decay<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d \u00a0For <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_ftn37\">David<\/a>, after he had served God\u2019s purpose in his own generation, died, was buried with his ancestors, and experienced decay (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>), but the one whom God raised up did not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/29\/pauls-ot-quotes-antioch\/\">experience decay<\/a>. \u00a0Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through this one <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/forgiveness\/\">forgiveness<\/a> of sins is proclaimed to you, and by this one everyone who believes is justified from everything from which <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_ftn38\">the<\/a> law of <a
