The rabbis who translated the Septuagint understood the last phrase, \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b7\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u1f51\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2 \u03c3\u03c6\u1f79\u03b4\u03c1\u03b1 (\u201cand they will be very cautious<\/a>,\u201d of you; i.e., of Israel).\u00a0 Either works in context.\u00a0 The origin of this fear was the destruction<\/a> of the Egyptians in the Red Sea: The nations will hear<\/a><\/em>, Moses and the Israelites sang<\/a> <\/em>to ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.\u00a0 Israel by contrast overflowed with confidence (Exodus 15:13 NET):<\/p>\n

The verb means \u201cstir up.\u201d Some understand the Hebrew verb \u05e8\u05b8\u05d2\u05b8\u05d6 (ragaz, \u201cto stir up\u201d) as a reference to quarreling (see Prov 29:9, where it has this connotation), but in Exod 15:14 and other passages it means \u201cto fear.\u201d This might refer to a fear of robbers, but more likely it is an assuring word that they need not be fearful about returning to Egypt. They might have thought that once Jacob was in Egypt, Joseph would take his revenge on them.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The rabbis who translated the Septuagint did not agree.\u00a0 They chose \u1f40\u03c1\u03b3\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5 (a form of \u1f40\u03c1\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) in Genesis 45:24<\/a>. \u00a0Be angry <\/em><\/strong>(\u1f40\u03c1\u03b3\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5) and do not sin<\/em><\/strong>,[7]<\/sup><\/a> Paul quoted the Psalm[8]<\/sup><\/a> in his letter to the Ephesians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified<\/em>,[12]<\/sup><\/a> Moses\u2019 song continued. \u00a0The Hebrew word translated terrified <\/em>was b\u00e2hal<\/a> <\/em>(\u05e0\u05d1\u05d4\u05dc\u05d5).\u00a0 It was also translated terrified <\/em>(\u05e0\u05d1\u05d4\u05dc) in 1 Samuel 28:21<\/a>, but they were<\/em> dumbfounded <\/em>(\u05e0\u05d1\u05d4\u05dc\u05d5) in Genesis 45:3<\/a> and panicked <\/em>(\u05d5\u05d9\u05d1\u05d4\u05dc) in Judges 20:41<\/a>.\u00a0 That hasty confused state of mind seemed to be what the rabbis responded to in the Septuagint with \u1f14\u03c3\u03c0\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd (a form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03b5\u03cd\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 Hurry <\/em>(\u03c3\u03c0\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd, another form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03b5\u03cd\u03b4\u03c9), Jesus said to Saul [Paul] in a vision, and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony<\/a> about me<\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The song continued, trembling will seize the leaders of Moab<\/em>.[14]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Here the Hebrew word translated trembling <\/em>was ra\u02bdad<\/a> <\/em>(\u05e8\u05e2\u05d3).\u00a0 It was translated shake uncontrollably <\/em>(\u05e8\u05e2\u05d3\u05d4) in Psalm 48:6<\/a> and panic<\/em> (\u05e8\u05e2\u05d3\u05d4) in Isaiah 33:14<\/a>.\u00a0 It was translated \u03c4\u03c1\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint.\u00a0 Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome<\/a> went out and ran from<\/em> [Jesus\u2019] tomb, for terror<\/em> (\u03c4\u03c1\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2) and bewilderment had seized them<\/em>.[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>Moses and the people sang, and the inhabitants of Canaan will shake<\/em>.[16]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The Hebrew word translated will shake<\/em> was m\u00fbg<\/a> <\/em>(\u05e0\u05de\u05d2\u05d5).\u00a0 It was translated are cringing<\/em> (\u05e0\u05de\u05d2\u05d5) in Joshua 2:9<\/a> and seemed to melt<\/em> (\u05e0\u05de\u05d5\u05d2) in 1 Samuel 14:16<\/a>.\u00a0 This was the sense the rabbis understood in the Septuagint: \u201call those inhabiting Canaan melted away<\/a>\u201d (\u1f10\u03c4\u1f71\u03ba\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03c4\u03ae\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>), whether by death, defection or fleeing as refugees. \u00a0Peter prophesied, the heavens will be burned up and dissolve, and the celestial bodies will melt away<\/em> (\u03c4\u1f75\u03ba\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03c4\u03ae\u03ba\u03c9) in a blaze!<\/em>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Fear and dread will fall on them; by the greatness of your arm they will be as still as stone until your people pass by, O Lord, until the people whom you have bought pass by<\/em>.[18]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0In the Septuagint this was understood as a request for more supernatural fear and trembling<\/em>: \u201cMay fear and trembling fall upon them.\u201d[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Hebrew word translated fear <\/em>(\u02bc\u00eaym\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, \u05d0\u05d9\u05de\u05ea\u05d4) was translated my terror<\/em> in ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> promise: I will send my terror<\/em> (\u02bc\u00eaym\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d0\u05d9\u05de\u05ea\u05d9) before you, and I will destroy all the people whom you encounter<\/em>.[20]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0This terror <\/em>was associated with an angel<\/em>: For my angel will go before you and bring you to the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, and I will destroy them completely<\/em>.[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Fear <\/em>was \u03c6\u1f79\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint.\u00a0 \u00a0And Zechariah, visibly shaken when he saw the angel, was seized with fear<\/em> (\u03c6\u1f79\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2).[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Hebrew word translated dread <\/em>was pachad<\/a> <\/em>(\u05d5\u05e4\u05d7\u05d3), which was translated \u03c4\u03c1\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2 in the Septuagint.<\/p>\n

There was a lot of anger, pain, panic, trembling and defection among the people who heard about the Egyptians drowned in the Red Sea.\u00a0 There was fear and dread of supernatural origin besides. \u00a0The fear<\/em> (yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>, \u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05ea; Septuagint: \u03c6\u1f79\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2) of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0is the beginning of wisdom<\/em>.[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I heard that often with no trace of irony.\u00a0 Apparently the NET translators heard it the same way for they went a step farther and translated yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em> to obey<\/em>: To obey the Lord is the fundamental principle for wise living<\/em>.[24]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked<\/em>, David penned, There is<\/em> no fear<\/em> (pachad<\/em>, \u05e4\u05d7\u05d3; Septuagint: \u03c6\u1f79\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2) of God before his eyes<\/em>.[25]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t hear this simply as a factual diagnosis but as a prescription for more fear.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I’m entirely alone in this.\u00a0 I had a pastor once who took No Fear<\/a> sportswear as a personal insult. \u00a0Perhaps he was considering the quotation credited to Albert Camus<\/a>: \u201cNothing is more despicable than respect based on fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t find the context for this quote online so I\u2019m just guessing, but I suppose that Camus<\/a> didn\u2019t know many French citizens who became committed NAZIs during the occupation<\/a> out of fear, only resistance fighters and collaborators.\u00a0 We see the same phenomenon in the Old Testament if we will see it: some rebelled against God, others adopted a hypocritical religiosity.\u00a0 What is born of the flesh is flesh<\/em>[26]<\/sup><\/a> and the works of the flesh<\/em>[27]<\/sup><\/a> erupt eventually through the hypocritical veneer of any religion (Romans 3:10-18 NET).<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no one righteous, not even one, there is no one who understands, there is no one who seeks God. \u00a0All have turned away, together they have become worthless; there is no one who shows kindness, not even one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir throats are open graves, they deceive with their tongues, the poison of asps is under their lips.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir feet are swift to shed blood, ruin and misery are in their paths, and the way of peace they have not known.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is the diagnosis.\u00a0 The prescription is given in Jesus\u2019 summary of Israel\u2019s history<\/a>: You must all be born from above<\/em>,[28]<\/sup><\/a> not more fear but more God, the righteousness <\/em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7) of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe<\/em>,[29]<\/sup><\/a> more of our daily bread<\/a><\/em>, more love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and Holy Spirit control, not pumped up artificially by some virtue of mine like some little engine that could, but flowing freely and continuously from those rivers of living water<\/em>,[30]<\/sup><\/a> his Holy Spirit.\u00a0 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God<\/em>.[31]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Though fear did not supply Esau\u2019s descendants with enough faith in ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> to allow Israel to cross through their land of Edom, it kept them from attacking Israel and being destroyed by ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.\u00a0 Fear can produce collaborators.\u00a0 The fear of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0is the beginning of wisdom<\/em> if the collaborators don\u2019t settle down to live in it (1 John 4:15-19<\/a>).\u00a0 In that case they may have been better off as resistance fighters (Revelation 3:14-22<\/a>).<\/p>\n
