I spend a large portion of my Christmas holiday with three post-Christian women I\u2019ll call Grandmother<\/em>, Mother <\/em>and Daughter <\/em>because of their relationship to one another.\u00a0 I call them post-Christian because they were all professing Christians at one time.\u00a0 Grandmother <\/em>still calls herself a Christian<\/em>.\u00a0 She means a non-Buddhist, non-Hindu, non-Jew, non-Muslim who believes<\/a> in Jesus.\u00a0 Her ex-husband was a Baptist Sunday school teacher who abused her, and Mother <\/em>as a child.\u00a0 Daughter <\/em>is the most non-Christian, vocally pagan of the three with Mother <\/em>falling somewhere between.\u00a0 Their transformation began with a desire for a more feminine God.\u00a0 I regret now not taking Mother\u2019s <\/em>question more seriously. \u00a0I didn\u2019t understand at the time that this desire would lead through Mother Earth to a Mother Goddess and on to full-fledged paganism.<\/p>\n

I pointed out that ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a> <\/em>(\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>) created male and female: God <\/em>(\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>) created humankind in his own image, in the image of God<\/em> (\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd) he created them, male and female he created them<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I talked about the meaning of El Shaddai<\/a> <\/em> (\u02bc\u00eal<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc<\/a>; shadday<\/em>, \u05e9\u05d3\u05d9<\/a>) and a few other references to God as feminine.\u00a0 But I emphasized that the general understanding of God as masculine was due primarily to the fact that we are all feminine in relation to the operation of his grace through Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

I am accepted among them as the kindly, odd, somewhat benighted, old man who studies the Bible in his spare time, so ordinary conversation\u2014what\u2019ve you been up to?\u2014offers many opportunities.\u00a0 A recent conversation with Grandmother <\/em>and Daughter <\/em>turned naturally to Jesus\u2019 dying thoughts on the cross.\u00a0 I read Psalm 22<\/a> aloud.\u00a0 Daughter <\/em>was visibly, tearfully moved and vocally overwhelmed that David could write such exact knowledge so many centuries before Jesus was born.<\/p>\n

I spoke of God having mercy on whoever he chooses to have mercy and hardening whoever he chooses to harden<\/a>.\u00a0 I said I had been considering how, and told them the story of two prophets, Nathan and John the Baptist.\u00a0 When Pharisees and Sadduccees, religious leaders, came to be baptized for repentance (Matthew 3:11, 12<\/a>; Mark 1:4-8<\/a>; Luke 3:15-17<\/a>) John said, You offspring of vipers!\u00a0 Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And he challenged them to put their works religion to the test: Therefore produce fruit that proves your repentance<\/em>\u2026[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

What I didn\u2019t say but will record here for my own memory\u2019s sake, whether these particular Pharisees and Sadduccees were directly responsible or not, John\u2019s words were not secret and would have tended to harden the resolve of the religious elite to kill Jesus: the Lord<\/em> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) desired to crush him<\/a> <\/em>(e.g., Jesus).\u00a0 On the other hand ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> desired David\u2019s repentance and sent Nathan to that effect.<\/p>\n

He was sent after King David had committed adultery with Bathsheba and then had her husband killed to cover it up.\u00a0 Nathan told David a story (2 Samuel 12:1-6<\/a>) about a rich man who had entertained a traveler with a meal. \u00a0The rich man hadn\u2019t served up any of his own sheep or cattle, but the one ewe lamb he took from a poor man.\u00a0 Then David became very angry at this man<\/em>.[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 You are that man!<\/em>[5]<\/sup><\/a> Nathan said to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid he kill him?\u201d Daughter <\/em>asked.\u00a0 I was actually surprised that she had forgotten<\/a> the story.<\/p>\n

No, I answered, I have sinned against the Lord!<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/a> David said and then he wrote the 51st<\/sup> Psalm. \u00a0I got to read Psalm 51<\/a> aloud to them.\u00a0 When I finished Grandmother<\/em> responded to a look on Daughter\u2019s<\/em> face at the line\u2014Look, I was guilty of sin from birth, a sinner the moment my mother conceived me<\/em>.[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe that either,\u201d Grandmother <\/em>said.<\/p>\n

<\/a>This is a point to concede<\/a> by the way.\u00a0 If it offends or hurts your feelings, welcome to the human race.\u00a0 Being guilty of sin from birth, a sinner the moment my mother conceived me<\/em> is equivalent to being born of the flesh of Adam (Romans 5:12-21<\/a>; 1 Corinthians 15:42-58<\/a>).\u00a0 You do not want a relentless God who will pursue<\/a> you with goodness and mercy all the days of your life to spend that time convincing you the hard way that you are a sinner instead (John 16:7-11<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Goodness and mercy, by the way is the NKJV translation of Psalm 23:6a.\u00a0 In the NET it was translated goodness and faithfulness<\/em> (ch\u00eas\u00ead <\/em>, \u05d5\u05d7\u05e1\u05d3<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\nDaughter <\/em>informed me that my religion has a lot of guilt in it as she praised me for my adherence to it, and insisted that we<\/em>, she and her pagan friends, desperately need a canon (i.e., of written scripture).<\/p>\n

<\/a>On Yule<\/a> I learned that Mother <\/em>had been taking drugs.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t personally that aware of the winter solstice.\u00a0 Daughter <\/em>and Mother <\/em>wished one another happy Yule in the car as I drove them to rehab.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably the only reason I knew anything at all.<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t known the night before that Mother <\/em>had informed Daughter <\/em>she was abusing drugs.\u00a0 Daughter <\/em>called me the next morning when Mother<\/em> hesitated to actually commit herself to rehab.\u00a0 In the car on the way Daughter <\/em>was jubilant and excited that Mother <\/em>was doing the right thing.\u00a0 Yes, rehab is better than sitting home alone shooting dope, but I was much more somber and subdued.<\/p>\n

At her home I had sat with her, held her and listened to her enough to convince myself that Mother <\/em>had no interest in repentance.\u00a0 Daughter <\/em>was right.\u00a0 My presence alone persuaded Mother <\/em>to shower, dress and leave with us for the rehab facility.\u00a0 But in the car I felt like I was delivering her up for more hardening.\u00a0 In my admittedly limited experience I know no one who has returned to faith in Christ from the higher power<\/a> mysticism of a twelve-step program.\u00a0 I watched sadly the full realization of incarceration creep across her face as she was taken from us.\u00a0 <\/a>No matter what I say or how much I protest, Mother <\/em>and Daughter <\/em>believe I live a life of rules, while they are free.<\/p>\n

<\/a>I gave them My\u00a0statutes<\/em>, ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> explained in the philosopher\u2019s dream chapter of Ezekiel the prophet, and informed them of My ordinances<\/em>, by\u00a0which, if a man\u00a0observes them, he will live.<\/em>[9]<\/sup><\/a> I call it the philosopher\u2019s dream chapter<\/em> because ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> explained so much of his own understanding of Israel\u2019s history there.\u00a0 Then the twelve-year-old Jesus had this chapter at his disposal to renew and refresh his now human mind.<\/p>\n

The Hebrew word translated My\u00a0statutes<\/em> was ch\u00fbqq\u00e2h <\/em>(\u05d7\u05e7\u05d5\u05ea\u05d9<\/a>).\u00a0 It was translated \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac<\/a> in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 The Hebrew word translated My ordinances<\/em> was mishp\u00e2\u1e6d<\/em> (\u05de\u05e9\u05e4\u05d8\u05d9<\/a>), and \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03af\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>, in the Septuagint.\u00a0 This was translated the righteous requirements <\/em>in: Therefore if the uncircumcised man obeys the righteous requirements<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03af\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1) of the law, will not<\/a> his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?<\/em>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

In the same chapter ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> explained: I also gave them statutes<\/em> that were<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>not good and ordinances by which they could not live<\/em>.[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here the Hebrew word translated statutes<\/em> was ch\u00f4q<\/em> (\u05d7\u05e7\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>); ch\u00fbqq\u00e2h<\/em> is the feminine of ch\u00f4q<\/em> according to Strong\u2019s Concordance.\u00a0 It was still translated \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1 in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 And again, the word translated ordinances <\/em>was mishp\u00e2\u1e6d<\/em> (\u05d5\u05de\u05e9\u05e4\u05d8\u05d9\u05dd) in Hebrew and \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1 in the Septuagint.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think these are different statutes <\/em>or different ordinances<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The commandment<\/em>\u2026was intended to bring life<\/em>.[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good<\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But if a law had been given that was able to give life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law<\/em>.[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God achieved what the law could not do because it was weakened through the flesh<\/em>.[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For sin, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it I died<\/em>.[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For we know that the law is spiritual \u2013 but I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin. \u00a0For I don\u2019t understand what I am doing. \u00a0For I do not do what I want \u2013 instead, I do what I hate<\/em>.[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Also I gave them My Sabbaths<\/em>, ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> said in the philosopher\u2019s dream chapter<\/em>, to be a\u00a0sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am the\u00a0Lord <\/em>(ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) who sanctifies them<\/em>.[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>In practice many professing faith in Jesus do not believe that ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>\/Jesus sanctifies[19]<\/sup><\/a> them.\u00a0 We trust Him for justification <\/em>only, primarily forgiveness.\u00a0 We believe our sanctification is a measure of our own good works, obedience accomplished in our own strength for our own glory.\u00a0 We do not believe that here and now a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God. \u00a0For the one who enters God\u2019s rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his own works.<\/em>[20]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.\u00a0 So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me<\/em>.[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Thus we must make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by following the same pattern of disobedience<\/em>[22]<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>; literally, disbelief<\/em>)\u00a0 Do we then nullify the law through faith? \u00a0Absolutely not! \u00a0Instead we uphold the law<\/em>.[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I want to consider the movie The Host<\/a> as a Holy Spirit metaphor for one who does not yet experience Him.\u00a0 There are many spoilers here and as a metaphor the film is fatally flawed.\u00a0 But in the hope of communicating some small portion of the Ineffable, here goes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe earth is at peace,\u201d a resistance leader named Jebediah (William Hurt<\/a>) narrates the beginning of the film.\u00a0 \u201cThere is no hunger.\u00a0 There is no violence.\u00a0 The environment is healed.\u00a0 Honesty, courtesy and kindness are practiced by all.\u00a0 Our world has never been more perfect.\u00a0 Only it is no longer our world.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been invaded by an alien race.\u00a0 They occupy the bodies of almost all human beings on the planet.\u00a0 The few humans who have survived are on the run.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then we are introduced to Melanie (Saoirse Ronan<\/a>) fleeing her enemies: honesty, courtesy and kindness.\u00a0 Following her earthly father\u2019s example, she attempts suicide but lives, despite her best efforts, only to be possessed by Wanderer (also Saoirse Ronan).\u00a0 Melanie\u2019s old human<\/a> survives to fight Wanderer for control of their body.<\/p>\n

The Seeker (Diane Kruger<\/a>) interviews Wanderer to glean Melanie\u2019s memories for knowledge of other old humans in the resistance underground.\u00a0 When she decides that Melanie\u2019s old human is too strong for Wanderer, she plans to put Wanderer in a more compliant host, search Melanie\u2019s memories herself and then let Melanie die the death she wanted.\u00a0 But Wanderer has begun to love Melanie.\u00a0 They flee The Seeker together.<\/p>\n

Melanie tricks Wanderer into the desert and leads her to Uncle Jebediah and the underground resistance.\u00a0 Uncle Jeb uses all of his authority as a leader to keep others in the resistance from killing the obviously possessed Melanie\/Wanderer.\u00a0 Even Melanie\u2019s lover Jared (Max Irons<\/a>) has no sympathy for her at first. \u00a0In a get-to-know-you walk-and-talk Uncle Jeb shortens Wanderer\u2019s name to Wanda.<\/p>\n

Melanie begins to love Wanda as she witnesses Wanda\u2019s concern for the people Melanie loves, even some she hates or is indifferent toward.\u00a0 The metaphor breaks down, of course.\u00a0 The holy spirits<\/em>, called souls<\/em> in the film, are many and varied, and some or not as holy <\/em>as Wanda.\u00a0 The Seeker ironically becomes almost human in her fears that she personally is losing control to her host Lacey (also Diane Kruger) and that the holy spirits<\/em> may ultimately lose their possession of the humans.\u00a0 In the end The Host becomes Satan\u2019s wet dream as The Seeker\u2019s fears become flesh: holy spirits<\/em> collaborate with the resistance to rid humans of the holy spirits<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mother <\/em>is on the verge of bankruptcy.\u00a0 I helped her in a similar position nearly twenty years ago.\u00a0 She called me before I left for Christmas.\u00a0 I offered to help again.\u00a0 She accepted. \u00a0As I drove the hundred miles or so to my own mother\u2019s house the evening after Mother <\/em>committed herself to rehab I understood why we hadn\u2019t met to review her finances yet. \u00a0I recalled the things I\u2019ve said and done with Grandmother<\/em>, Mother <\/em>and Daughter<\/em>, fretted over some things I hadn\u2019t said or done and heard Darth Vader<\/a> echoing in my head, saying, \u201cNow his failure is complete<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

As far as I know I am the believer of record in their lives.\u00a0 I will give an account<\/a> of this stewardship before Jesus<\/a>.\u00a0 As the enormity of my failure to live a life that commends others to Jesus inundated me in crushing waves, the image of my mother scrubbing the basement floor on her hands and knees popped into my mind.\u00a0 Of all the things she had said or done, of all the things I might have complained that she hadn\u2019t said or done, this simple image stuck with me.<\/p>\n

I had overdosed on some hallucinogen.\u00a0 I had thrown up all night long on her basement floor.\u00a0 My mother cleaning up after me became a living metaphor of my life.\u00a0 I had returned to drugs because a simple taste a few days earlier brought back the feeling I had lost since my early days of trusting Jesus again.\u00a0 I made many more bad decisions along the way.\u00a0 But my mother never gave up on me.<\/p>\n

<\/a>As I drove through the dark hills thinking perhaps I had been spared from helping Mother <\/em>again financially, the admonition of my penny-pinching father came to mind:<\/p>\n

If you can bear to hear the truth you\u2019ve spoken
\nTwisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
\nOr watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
\nAnd stoop and build \u2019em up with worn-out tools:<\/p>\n

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
\nAnd risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
\nAnd lose, and start again at your beginnings
\nAnd never breathe a word about your loss;
\nIf you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
\nTo serve your turn long after they are gone,
\nAnd so hold on when there is nothing in you
\nExcept the Will which says to them: \u2018Hold on!\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The words weren\u2019t his but Rudyard Kipling\u2019s<\/a>.[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 A man like me would be a fool to attempt Kipling\u2019s vision of manhood apart from the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 But the image of my mother\u2019s loving persistence and my father\u2019s words of counsel gave me some hope that I was there, the right person at the right place and time.\u00a0 And that image and those words carried me through that dark night until the continuous infusion of the Holy Spirit\u2019s love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and control took over again the next morning.<\/p>\n

<\/a>[19]<\/sup> When I struggled the most with this concept my Pastor was from the Christian and Missionary Alliance. \u00a0Today, as I scanned their webpage titled \u201cSanctification<\/a>,\u201d nothing jumps out at me as problematic except my own spiritual tic. \u00a0My flesh and my religious mind hear obedience <\/em>in step 3 \u201cto A Spirit-Filled Life\u201d\u2014\u201cWe maintain a continuous relationship with Jesus through obedience to His Word\u201d\u2014as a trigger word, calling me back to a DIY works religion.\u00a0 But now I just translate obedience <\/em>back into Greek, \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03ae<\/a>, attentive hearkening<\/em>, and the trigger obey<\/a> <\/em> disappears. \u00a0I remain <\/em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) in Jesus through faith instead (which is the actual word used in John 15:1-11 the Scriptural source of step 3).<\/p>\n

[Addendum 1\/26\/2017] I\u2019m not so sure<\/a> Paul would agree that 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 \u201cclearly teaches that there are two kinds of Christians.\u201d<\/p>\n
